I've tried Okayama Kobo before because someone has dropped it off to us, but this was my first time going to the shop and trying it fresh. The bakery smelled really good, so it was hard to not want to buy everything! But I ended up getting the salt bread and classic sunrise. The salt bread is so perfect. It has the perfect light texture with the right amount of salt and butter. I liked the crust of the classic sunrise. Both items were delicious. There was a line when I came on a Friday at noon, but it moves fairly quickly. There is ample parking in the Whole Foods/Theater parking nearby. There were some tables outside to enjoy your food, but the inside of the shop is fairly small. This is the perfect spot if you're looking to pick up pastries!

Cute Japanese bakery and coffee shop in the old little corner Starbucks location next to Ward theater. Kobo bear pan (fan favorite with the kids), matcha mochi pan, and curry pan were all delicious. Lots of selection of fresh breads and pastries to choose from. Mocha latte was also on point! We will definitely be back. Parking in the ward theater parking structure.

It took me a while to get to this bakery because of the insane line every day, but finally did and it's totally worth it! The pastries themselves are known for using Hokkaido bread, giving a distinct, fluffy texture and ranging from savory to sweet treats. I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious and incredibly affordable matcha latte menu, which came iced and in large sizes under $7 unlike counterpart cafes. My grandfather and I had a white bean bun, curry pan, and chocolate emoji pastry. All were distinctly different and not too sweet, which is definitely my brand of baked good. Don't be in a rush if you decide to brave the line, and definitely order more than one item! The workers are efficient and the only additional downside is that each pastry individually ranges from $3-5.

I went to this bakery near Whole Foods and tried out some of the Japanese bakery items. I got the salt and butter roll and the Japanini. The salt and butter roll was fresh and chewy with a soft hint of butter inside. The mini panini had bacon, tomato, cheese and pesto. It was good too. Too bad, the bakery didn't have tables inside. It was more of a takeout place. However, the bakery did have a few tables outside surrounding it.

We visited Okayama Kobo during their Cinnamoroll collaboration and wow, it was busy! The bakery line was pretty long, but it moved much faster than the merchandise line. We picked up a variety of pastries, including a few matcha breads, the chocolate emoji bread, bacon onion bread, and the Cinnamoroll blueberry bread. My boyfriend mainly had the matcha breads and his favorite was the matcha mochi an-pan. I tried some as well and really enjoyed the combination of red bean paste and chewy mochi filling. The chocolate emoji bread was so cute, but flavor-wise it was simply bread with dark chocolate inside. It was good, but nothing memorable. The bacon onion bread was probably my favorite, it was savory, flavorful, and satisfying. I also enjoyed the Cinnamoroll blueberry bread. The blue sprinkles made it extra cute, and the blueberry custard filling was yummy. For drinks, we ordered the Cinnamoroll blueberry iced tea lemonade and the blueberry white chocolate cold brew. Unfortunately, neither drink had much blueberry flavor. The iced tea lemonade tasted more like a classic Arnold Palmer, while the cold brew was a bit too sweet for my taste and wasn't my favorite overall. While the bakery items were good, they didn't completely wow me. That said, the Cinnamoroll collaboration was adorable and made for a fun experience.

It was all good blueberry thing and the hot dog were soft and gooey goodness. The bear had sweet beans

You can't help but notice the line. Staying directly across the street from the bakery gave me a front-row seat to its daily ritual. Every morning, without fail, people gathered outside waiting patiently for pastries. No flashy signs. No gimmicks. Just quiet consistency. That alone intrigued me. By the second day, my mind was made up. I'm an early riser, so the plan was simple: go on my usual morning run and arrive before the rush. Japanese culture and craftsmanship have long fascinated me. Through close friends with family roots tracing back to Japan, I've developed a deep appreciation for the culture -- the discipline, the rituals, the precision, and the respect for process. There's a beauty in the intentional pace at which things are done. Nothing rushed. Nothing careless. This bakery embodied that philosophy perfectly. The space itself was small, modest, and aromatic. No overdesigned interiors. No influencer bait. Just the comforting smell of fresh bread and butter hanging in the air. Some bakeries hide behind elaborate architecture and presentation, but this place understood something more important: when the product is exceptional, the product becomes the attraction. The pastries ranged from playful and charming to elegant and refined. The Salt & Butter bread was an instant staple -- savory, warm, and impossibly light. The dough practically dissolved like air. Thankfully, nothing felt overly heavy, because I completely lost control of my ordering strategy. The Kobo Kuma -- a soft bear-shaped bun filled with homemade vanilla bean custard -- was perfection. Equal parts cute and comforting. The Cinnamon Roll was solid, but the Haupia pastry completely stole the show. For those unfamiliar, Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian coconut pudding found throughout Polynesia. The flavor here was subtle yet lingering, delicate without disappearing. The kind of flavor that quietly stays with you long after the last bite. Then came the Blueberry Danish -- beautiful, buttery, and perfectly sweet. I didn't even make it to the savory options this time, which honestly just gives me another reason to return. And I absolutely will -- whether back here in Hawaii or perhaps at one of their mainland locations in Los Angeles. Some places become popular because of hype. Others because of quality. This bakery earned its line.

I am downgrading my review a little because I had the banana matcha again and it definitely tasted more artificial than I remembered. The pastries were still good though, very cute and tasty, nice and fresh! The matcha itself was pretty good but there's so many matcha places now. Doesn't stand out.

Prepare yourself for a wait if it is in a weekend! Lines can get long but it moves quick. The inside is small but there's some outdoor seating. I ordered a salt bread and it was delicious! Definitely worth the try. I also tried a curry pan and I loved it. Perfect crunch. I ordered a banana matcha as well and it was so yummy. Definitely a typical sweet banana flavor. The girls working were all so nice, I can't wait to go again!

One of my favorite Japanese bakeries on the island. It's located at Ward Center where the old Dave and Buster's used to be. My go to: 1. Banana matcha latte 10/10 2. Salt & butter rolls 10/10 3. Japanini 10/10 Also tried: 1. Strawberry milk cream croissant 8/10 2. Kobo kuma 8/10 I heard their curry pans are good too! Try them all and let me know what you think. Enjoy!

Apologies for another late review. Better late than never. When Okayama Kobo Bakery and Cafe (OKB) opened in November 2023, there was a lot of buzz around town and they were under my radar but didn't make my over to the Ward Village area until April 2025, when there was an Elite event where you could redeem perks and pick up your swag. The experience was amazing where I had to go back for more. OKB is a popular Japanese bakery originated from Okayama Prefecture in 1986 where they boast using 100% Hokkaido wheat flour in its products. They have over 200 locations throughout Japan and have expanded overseas to several locations in Southern California and Hawaii. With so much excitement about this Japanese bakery, I picked up an assortment of both savory and sweet items to let my family sample. Favorite niece by default had previously tried here so she was thrilled when I showed up with a box of goodies. What we sampled at OKB lived up to the hype. The winners were salt and butter roll, strawberry milk cream croissant and the oyaki. Counter staff are cordial and you can witness their assembly line as their bakers are in the background working diligently. Lots of parking in the adjacent building so a big plus. However, early bird gets the worm. Come late and get punished with a limited selection of goodies. OKB is a great addition to Honolulu with such delicious baked products. A great place to grab baked goodies without traveling to Japan.

Delicious bread, matcha, and red bean breads! Japanese style bakery. Sells out often, so go early in the day. Try their salt butter rolls, sunrise bread, and matcha bread! They also have hot breads, sausage rolls, and croquets. Matcha and cold brew are really nice flavors. Free parking in the garage next door. Often a line as the shop is small. The line moves relatively quickly. Merchandise is also adorable. Bread is made fresh here. Outdoor seating only. Take your stuff to go!

I came in not expecting much and ended up completely obsessed. The cookie butter salt bread was unreal--crispy on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside, with that rich cookie butter flavor that's perfectly balanced with a hint of salt. The Japanese sausage pastry was equally delicious--fluffy, slightly sweet bread wrapped around a savory, juicy sausage. Sweet and savory done right. I also tried the matcha coffee, and it was smooth, earthy, and just the right amount of creamy. It pairs perfectly with any of the pastries and rounds out the experience beautifully. Everything tasted fresh, well-made, and honestly kind of addictive. Definitely one of those spots where you go in for one item and end up wanting to try everything.

Since it was their anniversary on Sunday, also got their celebratory funfetti cupcake which also like their baked goods did not disappoint. The croissant base of many of their pastries is flaky. When fresh it crunches with every bite that you take. This time around we had the cinnamon roll, mango danish which had a chocolate mochi filling, and their char siu bun. It's such a neat take to have char siu in a croissant. We are used to having it in the doughy bao bread but in a croissant, savory with a crunchy outside tastes so much better. I love sweet but this one wasn't overly sweet, who would have thought that mango and chocolate pair so well together. It's the summer months, fresh mango on pastries. It was the perfect ripeness. For the cinnamon roll, you honestly cannot forget get their cinnamon roll...It's flaky and again the frosting is not overly sweet. Can't wait to get another box of their pastries again soon.

I love Pipeline Bakeshops Malasadas! I have been to several Malasada places in Hawaii but | love…read morethere's the best for the following reasons: 1. the size of the malasadas: some restaurants tend to make their Malasadas smaller and when places do this it ruins the overall texture and quality of it. The bigger the malasadas size the more airy and fluffy and more bread layers that will be inside. 2. their malasadas always taste fresh and the same quality each time. 3. their malasadas don't feel oily or heavy at all Overall I would highly recommend this place for their Malasadas! I'm so happy to have found them. I can back multiple times on my trip. They also have other desserts too that I have yet to try. They have ice cream, cakes, and other desserts Also tip: if you are ordering a malasada also order a coffee or a matcha drink to go with it. The cinnamon sugar from the malasada just matches so perfectly with a drink this restaurant is also a nice place for walking! There's lot of stores and restaurants to walk around! I'm trying to remember but I think there was a book off that was not too far from here! If you either drive or maybe walk. Service: staff was super helpful and friendly while I was there. I was having an issue with my online order because my phone was being glitchy and they were so nice in helping :) Also wanted to note their branding is so cute!! They even sell merch items too

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. FOOD - 4 stars... the malasadas were good, but that ube dessert was next level AMBIANCE - 4 stars...really a takeout operation with a lot of temptations SERVICE - 4 stars...very calm and orderly TOTAL - 4 stars...yet another spot for sweet Hawaiian decadence RELATED - Exploring Hawaii?
