My friend has me loving these pastries from local general store. I have been horrible with taking pics but got to eat more of their delicious baked goods. Since it was their anniversary on Sunday, also got their celebratory funfetti cupcake which also like their baked goods did not disappoint. The croissant base of many of their pastries is flaky. When fresh it crunches with every bite that you take. This time around we had the cinnamon roll, mango danish which had a chocolate mochi filling, and their char siu bun. It's such a neat take to have char siu in a croissant. We are used to having it in the doughy bao bread but in a croissant, savory with a crunchy outside tastes so much better. I love sweet but this one wasn't overly sweet, who would have thought that mango and chocolate pair so well together. It's the summer months, fresh mango on pastries. It was the perfect ripeness. For the cinnamon roll, you honestly cannot forget get their cinnamon roll...It's flaky and again the frosting is not overly sweet. All three parts of this business deserve 5 stars, so I wanted to break it down: Butcher: I've been making an effort to buy more local produce and meat, and this has been such a great spot for it. Every butcher I've interacted with has been patient and genuinely helpful, especially when explaining different cuts of beef. I'm not a fan of cleaning chicken myself, so I really appreciate that they'll remove skin and bones in-house (you still pay for it, and they'll ask if you want to keep the scraps). Another big plus is that the meat is fresh, unlike a few other places I've visited that only carry frozen options. Bakery: I can't come here without grabbing a sweet treat. They offer a mix of sweet and savory pastries, and honestly, I haven't had a bad one yet. I don't have a single favorite because they've all been consistently good. In my opinion, they're best enjoyed the same day. They also offer seasonal and holiday pre-orders. Sandwich of the Day: The premade sandwiches start at 11am and are made with about 90% house-made ingredients, served on their focaccia. As someone who loves a good sandwich, this did not disappoint. Super great place for pastries! I got there early around 8am as I was told they tend to sell out. We got their famous char sui croissant and the breakfast danish. Let me tell you, it is pricy but sooo worth it. The char sui croissant was super flakey and had a sticky sweet and savory char sui glaze on top. It was filled with so much meat and it is super filling. Its messy so have some napkins nearby! The breakfast danish is their twist on a shakshuka in pastry form. I caught them at the KCC Farmer's Market! They are there now every Saturday. I was able to nab the last Charsiu Bread and my goddd that stuff is as delicious as I remember. I loved it. The crust of the bread has that croissant flakiness but the sweetness of the char siu. The inner of the baked good is fluffy and the Char Siu meat is so tender and flavorful. I was so glad I was able to catch them at the market ;) Will definitely try to make it a point to visit their store in Kaimuki more :) Usually I'm a bit too late and they sell out of everything - but that's also a good thing because it just goes to show how delicious all of their goods are because people be selling them out! read more

We saw a short piece about The Local General Store on Bon Apetit's YouTube channel and thought it looked pretty amazing. The majority of the video was focused on the butcher side of the shop but I think what really blew us away were the baked goods...I'm a sucker for laminated doughs and the croissants here are truly amazing! I think even better than the ones at B. Patisserie which is saying a lot. The baked we got were... Shakshuka danish Orange marmalade/Chocolate ganache braid Chocolate ganache croissant Char siu croissant These were all fantastic but the one that totally caught us off guard was the Shakshuka danish. Everything about it from the buttery layers of pastry to the jammy egg yolk was perfect. There were a couple of small dollops of harissa paste on it as well which really took this one over the top. I think a close runner up was the Char Siu croissant but the others were also great. For the things we were really interested in from the butchers side were the Homemade Spam and the Ulu Scrapple. I've never had scrapple before but Joe K has since he lived in Pennsylvania in the past. Both of these were also really good. The spam had a much stronger pork flavor than you'd expect and the scrapple was amazing as well. The pork flavor was much more subtle in this one and I enjoyed the texture of pieces of ulu mixed into it. The ulu flour and cornmeal did give it a nice almost bread like texture and after a quick sear on both sides in a super hot cast iron skillet, we poured some maple syrup on it, it was like a juicy pork pancake! There are way too many reasons to go back to this place so there's no doubt we will be. read more

Okay, after watching a video on YouTube from Bon Appétit on The Local General Store it became one of the top places I needed to visit when in Hawaiʻi. Located on Waialae Avenue, parking is a little tricky, but if you're like us and get lucky you can get a street stall easily! We went in the afternoon, so a lot of the baked good were out (sad face - no charsiu buns for me) but the meat cuts and ulu scrapple were available. We opted for a quiche to share right away, and a croissant honey toast, and bag of beef jerky for later. There are few seats inside bar style if you want to indulge right away. This is one of my favorite bakeries on the island. This bakery is located in Kaimuki along Waialae Avenue. Parking is primarily available along the street if you're able to find it. The shop has a cute exterior with pops of green paint, and it is divided into the bakery on the left side and butcher shop on the right. Service is always warm and friendly, and helpful if you have any questions regarding their pastry selection! Usually there are staples that the bakery carries as well as a a seasonal rotation of goodies. I recently got a kabocha pastry, which was absolutely delightful. The bakery excels at making buttery, flaky crusts, and they always come up with interesting flavor combinations! I love to come by to see what new offerings they have. Happened to be in the area every Saturday. Ballet studio is just two shops down. Ok so I saw the spam and was super interested since. The spam was ono, it's more porky if that makes sense. Fry it with some shoyu and egg and rice. That's all you need. Croissants were great and not too sweet and they also had savory croissants. Perfect to bring to parties or enjoy by yourself. This review is for the shakshuka pastry! I love runny egg yolks, and their shakshuka pastry is one of my favorite treats to get! My boyfriend goes to Kaimuki often for appointments, so visits the local general store and brings me home a shakshuka pastry when they are in stock! I just had another one this morning and I wish I took a picture!! They are always consistently delicious, I must have gotten at least 4 or 5. The pastry is a square flaky croissant type with the egg nested in the middle. The yolk is rich and the shakshuka tomato curry is so flavorful. I have also tried their bechamel mushroom pastry and breakfast sandwich, but the shakshuka pastry is my ultimate favorite. The last time I was at this building, it was the Superette. But this new venture appears to be making some waves with its butcher and bakery sharing the same space. If I lived here, I would've bought something from the meat side. They have an interesting array of baked goods to choose from. I normally get a plain croissant to test their wares, but I just went for the twice baked almond croissant with guava jam filling. This was buttery and crispy and oh soooooo good! I also got a s'mores danish that I had the next day. Good test of a good bakery is how it will taste the next day, and this one did not disappoint! Had I had a toaster oven, I could've reheated, but the chocolate and marshmallow filling were soooo good! I wish I would've came here earlier in the week, so I could sample more. This place is such a unique and exceptionally excellent shop that combines two of my loves: pastry and meat!! A local husband-wife duo own and operate this butchery/bakery store and it offers something for everyone, all made with 100% local produce and animals. What's not to love?? There's pretty easy street parking available but during peak times it's tough. There's a few bartop seats to eat a quick pastry at but it's not really a sit-around sort of place. Pastry: open at 8am, this pastry is not playing around! Each one is made with love and care. There are lots of cute pastry shops on island where the pastry LOOKS cute/delicious but often is a let down in texture or taste. Not so here. The lamination is insane, the texture is on point (crispy edges/outsides, soft pillowy inside layers), and the flavor is balanced. Their savory pastries are especially delicious-- the char siu croissant legit changed my life. It's my go-to item and THE perfect breakfast food. The mushroom tartlet is also quite good and a great lighter but still savory breakfast choice. The cinnamon roll croissant was a decadent treat- reminiscent of the best cinnamon roll you've ever had but with the flaky crispiness of a croissant. They definitely sell out of the popular ones so get here earlier. They also sell drip coffee if you need a cup of that with your pastry. Butchery: open at 9am, they offer staple cuts of all different kinds of meats, but will also customize it to exactly what you want on the spot. I was amazed to see a huge range of options, including pastrami, roast beef, spam, scrapple, sausage, head cheese, and coppa. It's incredible that they make all of this by hand, in-house, from all local animals. Such skill and love goes into this. At 11am they offer their sandwich of the day, which is a happy harmony of fresh baked bread, their deli meat special, and local greens. Decided to make my way out of the west side to Waialae area to try these baked good and it was totally worth it. I came in the morning and was lucky enough to get street parking - that's really all you got. So big tip is to do that so you don't struggle with parking and don't have to wait too long. It's a small shop that sells baked goods and fresh meat. They get packed fast, so again, come in the mornings to not deal with too much crowds. I only ordered four different items which were the Breakfast Sandwich with their fresh deli meat, Char Sui Croissant, Chocolate Croissant, and Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie. All their stuff is home made and they use local ingredients! The deli doesn't open until 11 so I wasn't able to get the meat in the showcase, but there are meat items in the fridge. Back to the baked goods. Everything was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend. The Croissants were so soft, crunchy and delicious. I highly recommend the Char Sui because it tasted like a peking duck. Absolutely phenomenal. The Breakfast Sandwich is a great balance of savory and tang. The tang is from the Mayoli sauce. The milk bread was very soft and soaked the flavors nicely, it was melt in your mouth. Just know, it takes about 8 minutes for them to prepare the sandwich - definitely worth the wait. The person who helped us was new and you could tell, but one of the bakers was helping her. She was so nice because they boxed up our goodies even though they originally said that they could only do it if we ordered more than three items. Service was great and it was fast. It was our first time and we wanted breakfast. The breakfast sandwich was interesting with kimchi and pork and egg, a piece of quiche and a mushroom tart to share. There was only one option for the sandwich, with no label saying what was in it. I'm not a big fan of kimchi or pork in a breakfast sandwich so I probably wouldn't have gotten that, so I gave my half to my boyfriend and ate half the quiche and mushroom tart, both were good, a little pricy but I disappointed in the breakfast sandwich wishing they would give more options. Today on 3/6/25 my daughter said let's take a walk near our job and find some baked goods. We found The Local General Store. We were amazed by how many baked goods they had. It was hard to choose, but we shared the croissant honey butter toast. It was amazing and delicious. I'm going to buy 2 next time . I ordered the breakfast burrito . I loved every bite of it. My daughter ordered the breakfast sandwich. That was good too. We tried each other's food. Customer service was excellent. The cashier was very friendly. It's cute inside of the store . You have the baked goods counter on the left and fresh butcher items on the right . They had very fresh looking sausages , steak, bacon, etc... They also sell cute reusable shopping bags as well. This review is for the butcher side only. Our first time visiting The Local General store where it's both a butcher shop and a bakery. It's a small cute shop so it can get very crowded, very quick. On the butcher side they have the meats available at the counter and a fridge with some grab and go items like bone broths. We got a couple beef & lamb kofta and the Japanese currywurst to try. On the bakery side they had some pastries, both sweet and savory. They also sell other local made products in the shop so that's cool and love the support they're giving other vendors. They had a paper posted up with what looked like their special sandwich of the day, and if we we didn't have plans to eat right after shopping I would've waited for a sandwich and give it a try. There are a few seats up against the window if you want to sit down. Service was fast, friendly, and with a smile. The guy even let us know how to grill our meats if that's what we were going to do (which it was lol). The Local General Store was everything our friends had hyped it up to be. A local butcher shop that's pumping out one of the best breakfast sandwiches you will have. They don't have options you just order what it is for the day which I enjoyed. Place your order at the counter about a 10 minute wait for your sandwich. 4-6 bench seats along the window but very much a to go place. Loved they put it in a box for me so they traveled well. The place itself is just a butcher shop which was bustling and I enjoyed watching people order things and hear chatter about how this of that was so good I had to come back. Now onto the sandwich, the bread is incredible not sure what kind or who makes it but I want more of the soft but sturdy bread to stand up to the sandwich. The meat of the day was a link sausage of sorts cut into thin slices piled high. Egg is made in the fold style and is perfectly fluffy. Sauce was great. Don't have a suggestion on what I would change about it. Besides I wish I could go everyday and try out the different combinations. Keep up the great work! I've been wanting to try the Local General Store for a bit. I came at closing, so they did not have many pastries, which I really wanted to try. We ended up purchasing a steak. My husband thought it looked gross since it wasn't the normal color of meat you would see in the grocery store. We also bought some chicken stock and a salt/pepper/garlic grinder. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is not a whole lot of space inside, so it is a grab and go. Looking forward to coming back again for lunch. Parking is street parking. read more
