I thought the webpage looked so cute I decided to call for a consultation appointment for a wedding cake. We set an appointment time and was followed by a call back to let my know there was a $25 consultation and tasting fee. I agreed to pay the fee and asked if I could cancel the appointment. I was told "yes". I ended up cancelling 3 weeks prior to the appointment date and was told the $25 fee was non-refundable because "we already charged your credit card". FYI...Don't make an appointment unless you know they are who you want and there are many cake designers who don't charge a consultation and tasting fee. read more

I had the pleasure of working with Kristin with A Cake Life. I had a destination wedding and it was close to impossible for me to make it to Hawaii before our wedding to have a cake tasting. However, a cake tasting wasn't even necessary because our cake was SO delicious. Our first taste was at our wedding and we wish we could've had more! We chose the guava flavored cake with the strawberry filling and oh my goodness, it was divine. They also were very great when decorating the cake with the babies breath florals and setting up the other decor we had for the cake table. For our wedding, we wanted to use only local vendors that we personally knew. My husband went to university with Kristin so we decided to hire A Cake Life. Currently, we are living out of the country so we had to decide everything via email. They were always very response and accommodating to all of my requests and changes, even adding a second wedding cake a few weeks before. Creating my dream wedding cake was something I thought would be daunting, especially when I wouldn't be physically there to see it or do a cake tasting. Everything came out perfect, and I know everyone always says that, but I truly mean it. Kristin was in good contact with my wedding planner (in California) and I didn't have to worry about anything...all the logistics were taken care of. I ordered a 3 tier cake, with each tier being a different flavor and design. They even added gold flakes (which originates from my city in Japan) to it and orchids (which are my favorite flower because my grandfather used to grow them), that just made the cake even more special and personalized. Wow! What can I say. From start to finish my experience with A Cake Life staff was positive and professional. We emailed back and forth several times before settling on a cake (vs cupcakes) as well as specific designs and flavors. They were very patient with me while I decided what I thought was the perfect combo for a cake. I ended up with a minion cake theme, round, 8" (I think), with marble cake and chocolate buttercream frosting. The wedding cake I ordered from A Cake Life was so well done and beautiful. Since it was ordered last minute and a surprise for my brother and his wife there was no face-to-face consultation with Kristin. Since I saw her cake-folio on her formal website I had no doubts she would create something stunning. All the communication was done via email and Kristin always responded within a timely manner. She was very sincere with her input on the design of the cake I requested and I'm glad I took her design expertise over my own. It was more than worth it to go through the design process with Kristin since not only were my brother and his wife blown away by the cake, but so were all the guests that attended. Also to note, the flavors of the cake were exceptional as well. Luckily I was able to snag a piece of one of her more popular flavors: strawberry-cream. It was to die for. I had my destination wedding in Hawaii 6/22/12. I live in california and had to do all my research online. I came across reviews for cake life and they were all great so I decided to start communication. From my first email Kristin was great! She is so nice and answered ALL my questions, and I had A LOT! Responses were quick. I sent her image of a cake design I liked and she created it beautifully. I had a two tier cake for 46 servings. Bottom tier was yellow butter with fresh strawberry filling and top tier was coconut with pineapple filling. They both tasted amazing but my favorite was the coconut. Just delicious! Their variety of flavours and cake designs were what attracted me, along with their affordable prices and package deals! I live in Toronto so I was not able to taste the cakes beforehand, but I was not disappointed on my wedding day! They made such a beautiful and tasty wedding cake along with cupcakes for my big day! I chose a variety of flavours such as strawberries and cream, lilikoi (passionfruit), coconut pineapple, chocolate Oreo cupcakes, and marble and raspberry cupcakes. Everyone couldn't wait for us to cut the cake so that they could start devouring the desserts! My mom was going to celebrate her 60th birthday, and my sister and I wanted to throw her a surprise party. I inquired with A Cake Life and got in touch with Owner, Kristin. She was so nice and made me feel comfortable with my rather unique request. My mom is scared of roaches so we thought it would be funny to have a roach themed party. We made fake roach trap party favors, scattered different insects on the tables, but we needed the perfect cake to tie our ideas all together. I thought of a roach shaped cake, but with Kristin's expertise and advice, we decided to go with a square, two-tier cake with small roaches hanging off the sides. There was edible "dirt" at the base of each tier and grass frosting to make it look like the roaches were coming out of the ground. The flavor we chose was "The Classic," yellow butter cake with lilikoi filling. It was so moist and refreshing. She did such an amazing job! I would definitely recommend A Cake Life to anyone. I found A Cake Life through Instagram and decided to follow cause "support local" right. Plus I enjoyed the pics and videos they posted of them decorating or displaying their finished cakes. I was contemplating ordering a cake for myself when I came upon one of their flash sales on instagram. They had single tier 6" ready made cakes available for sale and you just had to call in and hope that you snagged it on time. I'd seen them advertise this kind of sale before, but would always miss them as they sell out fast. Each cake cost $45 before taxes and looked beautiful on instagram. I called in, butterflies in my stomach, and hoped I wasn't too late. A friendly sounding lady answered and let me know that they still had cakes available. I was so excited when I heard that. I was even more excited when I found out I could order more than one. So, I ordered two. (Yes, I know, greedy, but one of the cakes was going to my niece. She was throwing a party for some of her coworkers who got laid off and they deserved a beautiful cake.) I am so glad I called in. I was a little afraid that the cakes would be too small, but they were the perfect size. Both beautifully decorated. The cake we decided to keep was a semi nude orange cake with guava purée and lilikoi cream filling. It was ONOLICIOUS. The flavors were perfectly balanced. My dad (a retired math teacher) kept complimenting how crisp the lines were and how perfectly circular the cake was when I took it out of the box. After his first bite though, I didn't hear another word. LOL. I was reading the reviews and one of the ladies spoke about ordering a birthday cake for herself. I think I was that annoying customer that asked a lot of questions that they must have been glad that my event was over and had multiple emails. They are not like other vendors that are like " Hey, do you want to set up a conference call so that we can get to know you better and really know what you want for your cake" kind of people. Its a business, but there is no personal touch. I think they will care more if you order big-ass cakes and the whole shebang. i mean my wedding wasn't the fanciest wedding there is, it was a very simple family gathering. Although I felt that I overpaid for very small flowers on my cake that they did not even bother to put on the cake. I saw them deliver it to the reception but they never even bothered to say hi or congratulations. I mean it didn't matter to me coz I don't know them anyway, but I wanted to thank them personally. It is disappointing to say the least, I had expected a lot more service from this business due to the prices and referral but the whole experience was so unpleasant and Kristin (the owner) lacked basic customer service skills. If she is overwhelmed with emails (which she stated to me over the phone as to the reason she did not respond to me a week and half into my event to finalize my design), she should hire a minimum wage secretary that could assist with pleasant service. She clearly was overwhelmed and seemed like she was having a mental breakdown, because all I heard was excuses for her not being able to respond to my emails for cake design confirmation. I mean, customers are not supposed to feel like her therapist or feel like we have to comfort her. We are the ones paying over $300 for a specialized birthday cake, which btw was so disappointing. It was so one-dimensional and flat on the cake, it looked like she just slapped together a picture and stuck in in the middle of the white, square cake, which looked like a white icebox. The taste was disappointing and my guests were whispering to each other because it they knew my experience with this place. I will never recommend this place to any of my clients or friends. It's too bad because I usually am adamant about supporting local businesses but I was so turned off by this whole experience, I tell all my clients, friends and colleagues. read more

I loved my wedding cake. I had a destination wedding so did a lot of my planning via email. Kristin was extremely easy to work with and responded to my emails in a timely manner. We met for a tasting at the Wedding Cafe and she was really nice and answered all the questions we had. I kept my wedding cake simple, three tiers with white fondant and a plum fondant ribbon (one of my wedding colors) running along each tier. I then had my florist dress it up with some white orchids. I have a huge sweet tooth and really enjoyed my cake on my wedding night. I highly recommend the guava cake w/ guava frosting and coconut cake w/ lilikoi frosting. So good! We hand delivered our cake topper, very expensive custom bobble heads, but when they delivered the cake and took the topper out, it was bent. Then, when it was placed on the top by the delivery guy, it fell off! Luckily, someone caught it before it hit the floor and broke into a million pieces. I feel like this could have been prevented had they staged everything before delivery, making sure it would work. We a had small top tier with 6 dozen cupcakes. The cake itself was moist and flavorful. The cupcakes were a little dry, but beautifully decorated. I emailed A Cake Life mid-January to inquire about 2 cakes that I need for my wedding in June.I requested a 3-tier cake for about 120 guests and a custom groom's cake. The person responded right away and I had a good feeling. I gave her a picture of what I'd like the groom's cake to look like, I chose my design and my flavors and gave the date of the wedding. I was excited because all of these reviews just raved about how great this bakery was, etc. etc. Anyway, after my 2nd email back with my flavors, etc there was no response. I emailed and emailed and no response. There was a response about a week or two later asking me again what the date was and I replied with the date and requested a phone meeting. I sent multiple emails following up. No answer after that. I live in NYC but am from Hawaii so I sent my cousin and her bf to the bakery to inquire about my inquiry and order. She responded that she knew what the order was and that she'd email me. It's been over a week and NO EMAIL, NO CALL. NOTHING. This is NOT how to run a business. I'm so disappointed in this bakery. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE IF YOU ARE ONLY COMMUNICATING REMOTELY. They obviously don't value all customers equally. read more

I ordered a custom cake with cupcakes for my baby first birthday party. It was such a great experience even from the very beginning. I was very impressed with how responsive Kristin was and how she was able to create what I envisioned so easily. I can tell she works very hard and loves what she does. I wanted a cake that looked like a castle with a dragon on top, as well as dragon cupcakes. It was ready for pick up on time and they were so helpful loading it into my car. The final product was soooo beautiful and it exceeded my expectations. It was definitely one of the highlights of the party. Not only did it look awesome, but it was delicious as well. I got a two tier cake, one tier was lilikoi and the other was guava. It tasted like the actual fruit and not artificial at all. It was delicious! My husband and I recently got married and really wanted cupcakes at our wedding. I searched and found a cake life, the site looked professional and the cupcakes looked so cute. We chose the cupcake tier which by the way was 45 dollars and only made of cardboard. We also chose the cupcakes with the flowers on top. I picked them up the day before and they were really cute. My complaint is not about the service we received or about the look of the cupcakes, but about the taste. These cupcakes taste like cupcakes you would buy at a grocery store. The cake itself was super dry, not moist like you would expect cupcakes to be, and the frosting was just blah. Their recipe is not very good. And we got all the flavors. If you are looking for a nice look then fine but if you want your guests to love the flavor I would not go with A Cake Life. They need a new recipe. By far the worst cupcakes I have ever tasted. Which I am really bummed about because come on... It was my wedding! They should have been delicious! And for what they were it was way too expensive. read more
