Hands down the most fun! This was our first experience kayaking and I was slightly nervous (I have a little fear of the open water), but we were in not directly in the open water so no big waves or fear of tipping. It was so much fun kayaking to the dunes across the way. We stayed out for about 2 hours. Love that they charge by the hour and don't restrict you to a time slot. Rather you check in and they let you go and when you are back they just charge you by the hour. I highly recommend going!! read more

We rented two double kayaks last week and again today from the Kayak Shack and had an absolute blast. Last week we kayaked during low tide and today during high tide, so they were very different (but both great) experiences. The people at Kayak Shack were kind and helpful. It took just minutes to get signed up, fitted with life jackets, and in the water. The Kayak Shack is in a wonderful, quiet part of the Morro Bay Estuary, so it's a great spot from which to explore the Sand Spit, the mud flats, and the Bay in general. We had so much fun! read more

Fun way to enjoy Morro Bay We had a great time renting kayaks from the Kayak Shack. The two women working there the afternoon of 2/22/20 were so friendly and helpful. They quickly got us launched and happy paddling across the bay to the sand dunes of the peninsula. We then had a blast exploring and walking across the soft sand dunes to the side where the waves break. The scenery is gorgeous everywhere you look. When we got back to the dock they were again very helpful, happy and friendly and made the excursion more enjoyable because of that. read more

The folks at Kayak Shack are great. And the best thing is the wonderful system for getting in and out of the boat. Just hold on to the bar and step in, and grab the handles to pull yourself up and out. I've never had a dryer paddle! Morro Bay is one of my favorite places to kayak. The pelicans dive right in front of the boat and fly so close overhead that you can hear their wings flapping. read more

I'm a local and this is my fave kayak rental spot. You can access the whole back bay from here (going south-ish) which is much more pristine and natural than the commercial part of Morro Bay. Just be sure and check the tides so it's not too low! The staff is amazing, their kayaks are great. Have fun! read more

Great place! Kayak rental was easy and smooth. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

Prices were quite good compared to the other kayak rentals in the area. Equipment is very clean and in great shape. Staff was super friendly and helpful; oriented us to the features around the bay and put us in the water in a matter of minutes. My 5yo and I enjoyed seeing a lot of different wildlife and chatting with interesting folks living on boats in the harbor. Be sure to wear pants and shoes that dry quickly, bring a water bottle, and prepare for a good 2-3 hours if you want to paddle downtown and back. The rental here was quick and painless, and once the staff person (who, yes, as noted in other reviews, is incredibly friendly and nice) figured out I knew what I was doing, i got right in the water. I appreciated the fact she discussed local conditions with me and gave me enough information about destinations without inundating me. The yaks are standard plastic in decent condition. There weren't extras beyond PFD and paddle (e.g. no maps, water bottle holders, whistles/mirrors etc.) I had a little water proofing problem with the seal on mine but the staff person helped me fix it. The prices were excellent - they're generous with rounding down on hours, and there's only a one-hour minimum rental - and for a place to put in that's close to where you want to paddle, it's absolutely the best spot in Morro Bay. The only reason I don't give this a full five stars is the abbreviated winter hours and the somewhat casual attitude towards the posted business hours (I beat the staff person in by 20 minutes and was just about to leave when she showed), which may simply be the laid-back atmosphere of the place. And, as a safety geek, I have to fault them for not offering any signalling equipment with the rental or doing an exchange of cell numbers as a precaution for an overdue trip. Really, in the end, if you know what you're doing more or less, I doubt you could do better with a simple kayak rental anywhere in terms of value, speed of service, and getting yourself out on the water as soon as possible and back pretty cheaply. read more

Super simple and a great experience. My son and I rented two kayaks for an hour. I haven't kayaked for over 20 years! The kayak shack recommended that we had north even though it was high tide. We did and, 10 minutes out, we were rewarded with two otters playing in a kelp forest. Lots of pelican sightings too. I saw families bringing their kayaks up onto a spit of beach close by. I could see doing that in the future with a picnic. Next time I'd go for 2 hours, it was great. read more

A local in Cayucos recommended A Kayak Shack for our first ever kayaking adventure, stating that going out from the state park landing would be quieter than in town. Good call! Despite a large group getting ready to go out in front of us, we were able to get our kayaks, receive instruction, and be launched out into the bay quickly. Found the kayaks and paddles to be in good condition. Able to rent dry bags to put our electronics so that we had a camera and cell phone to take pictures when danger of getting wet was past. We didn't see a lot of wildlife or birds, but there were a few. The sensation of being out on the water was amazing. it was so beautiful and peaceful. What a feeling! Having Morro Rock as such a prominent landmark off to one side as we paddled out to the sand bar made for a dramatic setting. Dear Hubby and I paddled in a double kayak, while our nephew had a single. He was very helpful to us in getting us out of the craft when we reached the sand bar. The staff at the Shack had recommended for first timers to row straight across to the sand bar for the smoothest ride, I was in the rear seat and did get wet, especially my legs. I wore synthetic leggings, which dried quickly. The foot rests weren't set up for me on the outbound trip, which was a hindrance. When we got out on the sand bar, my nephew helped me set the foot rests to a comfortable matching placement on both sides. That made for easier paddling with more effective stroking engaging my legs and my arms simultaneously. Unlike other reviewers, we didn't have the friendliest counter staff. They were busy, and seemed a bit preoccupied. Still, they got us out on the water with enough basic instruction to make our maiden voyage a great adventure. The staff here was wonderful with getting us out on the water quickly after we spontaneously decided to take a little kayaking trip and we were on a little time crunch. They quickly got everything we needed and we were out on the water in no time. They had a large variety of life jackets in a bunch of sizes, plenty of single and tandem kayaks, dry bags, bottled water, cubbies for your items and everything you can think of to make for an enjoyable trip. There are public washrooms nearby and plenty of parking! They are located in a fantastic spot where the water is always calm and so it's great for beginners and children. We had fantastic views of the rock and we kayaked all the way to the beach on the other side where we explored the dunes and searched for clams and shells. After your done, stop by the little cafe in the parking lot to get a bite to eat. What a wonderful spot! read more

Really great way to explore Morro Bay. The staff was extremely helpful and they knew their way around the bay. We kayaked for about three hours and the total cost was a little over thirty dollars. All in all, an easy experience that gives quite a workout. I recommend checking out the sand dunes across the bay as well as some of the mudflats that have indigenous birds. There are also sea lions and otters to observe as well. Keep in mind that during low tides, extra maneuvering is required so that your kayak won't get stuck in the flats. Wear sandals in case you get your feet wet. Also, secure your belongings in a waterproof case. read more

It was reasonably priced and the service was very friendly. I loved the set-up in the slip where the kayaks are. Getting in and out was very simple and it felt really safe.
