They observe safe practices during the Covid pandemic. We got there in the morning on the off season and got our kayaks within 5 min. The equipment was in good shape. The price is fair and a little less than their competitors in morro harbor. We had an amazing time kayaking in Moro Bay thanks to the Kayak Shack. The staff was helpful and let us know the best routes to take, and the scenery was out of this world amazing. It was physically very easy so don't worry if you're not a star athlete! And mostly the water is pretty shallow, so in the unlikely event you tip over, you'll be able to just stand up. Nice day in the bay. This is the best starting point to get to Montaña de Oro state park. We paddled to the dunes and crossed over to the ocean. Spectacular. The equipment was in good shape. Staff was friendly. Don't take your shoes--when you Beach the kayak you need to get out in water then thick mud. You don't need shoes at the dunes. Be careful not to rock the kayak. My boyfriend and I decided to go kayaking as a fun date while we were visiting my family in California. It had great reviews on Yelp with good prices! We drove 2 hours and it was well worth it. It was both of our first time doing this but we quickly got used to how to paddle and everything. It was super fun and a good arm workout lol! We spent about 2 hours out in the kayak for the price of $36 total (includes double kayak, life vests, paddles, additional hour; 1 hour is $24, additional hour is +$12). We both definitely agreed that we had an amazing time and it was so peaceful and had perfect weather that day. We would love to go back again! read more

Don't get me wrong, the kayaks were great, we got two two-person kayaks and rode across to the sand dunes. Found a shark eggs case, and lots of birds. Overall great experience. When we payed in the end, they charges us extra for "overtime." It was 60 when it should've been 45. This is because they started counting our time right after we checked in, instead of starting it when we left the dock. Keep that in mind if you decide to go here :) The experience was great but the customer service wasn't amazing. read more

Staff was knowledgeable and super helpful. Calm waters were great for my family as beginners. We even saw some otters! Equipment was clean and well maintained. Ample parking. There was a beach a short paddle away, with a view of Morro Rock. You could probably even paddle there, if you were looking for a 1/2 day to a full day excursion. Thank you to Kayak Shack for helping us celebrating my hubby's big-0 birthday! Our plans to celebrate with extended family were canceled by the covid surge and Kayak Shack came to the rescue. First of all - the location at the end of Main is wonderful. It's outside the bustle of the Embarcadero and much more peaceful. The young woman working the shack was lovely. She was so gentle with my kiddo. She reminded her how to correctly paddle (it had been a minute, since we were last out on the water.) She explained how to avoid a sand bar, but reassured her that if she did get in a shallow area that it would be easy to get out. And she helped adjust her foot rest and get her fitted in a size-appropriate life vest. She talked about local wildlife that we might see and places of interest to paddle. The kayaks were in nice shape and the hold (where we had our dry bag) didn't take on any water. It was a BEAUTIFUL winter day and perfect for wearing shorts and t-shirt. If you are looking to see birds and otters up close (but from a respectful 10-kayak distance of course) and paddle in some calm water through estuaries, this is your place. Thank you Kayak Shack for bringing some joy to a family celebration during a not so joyous covidy time. P.S. We liked it so much that we're considering bringing kiddo's friends down to the Shack, renting kayaks and setting up a nature scavenger hunt/bingo for her next birthday. read more

"A Kayak Shack" was fantastic. My wife and I were able to jump in a kayak in less than five minutes of arriving. We called ahead and Trevor told us the best time to head out without battling the tide. Olivia was there when we arrived and was helpful letting us know areas to avoid in the low tide and which way the tide was flowing in the bay. We opted to paddle straight out towards the dunes and we saw peregrine falcons, huge white pelicans, and seals relaxing on the mud flats. We then headed toward Los Osos, saw the Oyster Farm, and circled back easily riding the tide thanks to Olivia's advice. We had a great time. Plan on calling ahead to have them advise you what the best time is to paddle in the direction you desire in order to not fight the tide (Los Osos or Morro Bay). read more

Walked up to the dock with a group of 5 + 1 dog and was in the water in under 5 mins. Rented 3 singles and 1 double yak and everything was in good shape gear wise. Prices were a bit less expenses then the kayak outfitters downtown but it is a bit further from Morro Rock. Right across the street from Morro Bay SP. The fellow at the dock answered some basic questions about where to paddle and what to expect. He also put the kayaks directly into the water (so you didnt have to lift any boats in the water) and offered a helping hand into your wobbly boat. Our group had a nice leisure paddle in which we encountered pelicans dive bombing into the water, seals following our boats wake and snow plovers feeding off the strand's shore banks. We ran into the strand's bank, hiked around the sand dunes and had a peaceful lunch listening to the beach break. Great experience overall and I would give this place the 5th star if they went above and beyond by: giving you some waterproof info sheet regarding local birding/animal/morro rock/power plant beta, fitting you into the boat better (adjusting the foot pegs), making sure the paddles feathered angle is corrected (I had to adjust mind and someone without kayak knowledge might of not known better) and offering some dry bags. If you have pervious kayak skills, jump into your boat and go. Never kayaked before, go with a guide or just simply ask homeboy how to paddle / fit you correctly into your boat and off you go. I had an awesome morning in the bay thanks to these good folks. The renting process was easy and the equipment was in good shape; I was on the water quickly. They pointed me on the best direction, so I wasn't fighting the tide. They even held my keys for me which was very helpful. I enjoyed my time on the water immensely. I saw a lot of wildlife, including otters, seals, many species of birds, small fish, and even a ray. I spent a lot of time just drifting along soaking in the sites and sounds. After 2 hours, my muscles began to tire but my soul was refreshed. I heartily recommend you get yourself into a kayak! read more

My boyfriend and I, at my urging, rented kayaks about 9:00 am on a very cool morning. Just as we climbed into our respective kayaks it started raining. Within minutes it was hailing and continued to do so for about 30 minutes, then another 30 minutes of rain. We called it quits after an hour but we still paddles around the harbour area where we saw egrets, turkey vultures gnawing on something, visited with the people who run the oyster farm....we made the best of a cold situation. The young woman who signed us up made sure we understood any covid instructions, she wore a mask, as did we, made sure we were wearing our life jackets, and sent us on our way. She probably thought we were nuts (some truth to that) but upon our return was amazed we lasted as long as we did. She helped us out of our canoes, jackets and got us on our way. She told us she was closing up shop as soon as we left. As crazy as it was we had a wonderfully momentous event, one we'll always cherish. I was glad Kayak Shack was open that morning!!! read more
