My first time visiting here - we came because I saw on social media that they were having a pottery…read moresale. We showed up at 10 am when it was supposed to start, but clearly that was just a suggested time, because some of the artists had not even shown up yet, much less had their table with merchandise ready. The clay center is one of a few local Morean places; there is also the Morean Arts Center, and the Chihuly Collection on Central Ave. in St. Petersburg. We used the time waiting for the outside to be ready to wander around the inside of the clay shop. The building is an old railway station, and very interesting looking, with high ceilings and plenty of space for the makers. Merchandise was for sale on shelves up and down the walls. There were many different items for sale ranging from bowls, mugs, and plates to sculptures, all created by different artists in their own personal styles. We found out later that many of the artists were just bringing their inside work out to tables outside. I love that they have an "artists in residence" program - I saw one of their artists, Tyler Quintin, at a craft show and loved his work, followed him on social media, and then heard about this show. The best part of the day was watching a Raku pottery demonstration. It was amazing! After a second firing, the pottery was coated with a glaze in front of us, and then put in a trashcan with burning newspaper for a final firing. So neat! It looks like they offer a variety of classes, as well as intro-to-clay parties you can host for friends. I will definitely be back.

I've purchased some great things here! Cool looking mugs, planters, plates. Love how unique each piece is. Almost everything inside the building is for sale, and most of it is decently priced. They have rotating art exhibits right when you enter to the right. Really cool pieces to look at. There was also a unique spoon exhibit towards the center of the building the last time I was there. It's like going to a museum for free lol. You just wander the aisles and look at the beautiful clay work. We usually end up spending about 1-2 hours here. And plan to come back at least once a month as long as they keep holding their events. :)

Although we came for the Morean Center for Clay (http://www.yelp.com/biz/morean-center-for-clay-st-petersburg), what we really enjoyed was our visit to the St Petersburg Clay Co. We walked in the front door, looking a little lost I'm sure. Someone noticed and told us that the entire space (36,000+ square feet) was open to browse, and so we did. The first thing we saw was a gallery class display area for some very nice pottery pieces.* I think this area is actually for exhibitions, as once we turned the corner, our perspective changed. Had we not been told we could wander, I would have thought we were invading someone's personal space. We were in a workshop. Clay, tools and unfinished projects were everywhere. It was very interesting. As we gazed, a woman approached and ask if we needed help. We said no, that we were just looking. She then introduced herself as Wendy Duran and told us that she is one of the resident artists here. She gave us a quick rundown of the pace, and that yes, wander to your heart's content. She explained the various rooms, and that you can walk the building, inside, from one end to the other (through the Morean Center for Clay and into HIghwater Clays). The cool thing about the St Petersburg Clay Co. is that just about everything you see is for sale. There are so many artists, and so many displays and cubby holes filled with a huge variety of styles ans sizes, that it's pure fun to wander and look. Even if you are not looking at pieces of art, you are looking at the various rooms where the pieces are made. Fascinating. One room was the glaze room, and the walls were lined with the various substances used to produce all the different finishes. The next room had small kilns (the big kilns are outside, including the legendary Anagama kiln built by master potter Don Reitz) and racks of pieces ready to be fired. Another section housed the resident artists. Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming. Were our suitcases not already at capacity, I'm quite sure we would have found at least a piece or two to take home. Next time for sure. Bottom line: If you like clay, don't miss the St Petersburg Clay Co. You could even make it a lunch destination, as there is also an on-site cafe (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ca-cafe-st-petersburg). * We later learned that this was a solo exhibition by Beth Morean. Wow!

Parking was chaotic, but that's to be expected especially with it happening at the same time as and not too far from Saturday Morning Market. Free to enter & wander around while lots of art is on sale and displayed for people to check out. Ceramics, paintings, metal working, wood working, stone art, and so much more are there to check out. I picked up two small pots I plan to use for succulents from one vendor who was cash only, and then picked up a wine glass holder from a woodworker as well who accepted cards. There was an ATM on site, but I was surprised to hear some artists didn't accept cards given some of the higher price tags here. So be prepared for that. They also have some food and drink options available; I had Frosé from Big Crush Slush, a raspberry yogurt, chocolate dipped ice pop with sprinkles from a vendor, and was lured pretty close to many tents selling hot stuff and actually meals too. Plenty of chairs, tables, & tents set up to sit down and enjoy your meal or just to rest your feet, and there was live music at times too.

A nice art co-op in down town St. Pete…read more I walked in because the door was open and it was cooler in there than it was on the street. The walls were covered with the art of approximately 20 different artist in many different mediums. From photo to photo-realism, pontilism and ceramics, there were so many different styles offered. One of the most unique ones I remember is the woman who painted with invisible (black light visible) ink. For the most part the paintings looked one way, but if you shined a black light on them, they came to life with another dimension. Yes, I made a purchase, a pen and ink drawing, simple pointillisim work on white. Absolutely stunning and very inexpensive.
