I first stopped in here simply because it was close to my apartment. Now I'm here at least twice a week no matter what else I have going on. I'm a huge fan of a good mocha, and theirs are literally the best I've ever had. The dark chocolate in my latest mocha was free-trade from Peru. How awesome is that? Most of their coffees are free-trade, organic or both, and you can ask them about the origin of any of them. The wifi's also solid, and there are board games available in the back. I absolutely love this coffee shop!!! The interior is super cozy, with a warm color scheme, pretty embroidered art hanging everywhere and comfy seating to sink into while listening to some mellow tunes- exactly the place you want to withdraw into when caught in the rain or waiting for the bus. The first time I walked in I was immediately charmed by the names of the cup sizes (the 20 ouncer is called a bullfrog!). The baristas own the place - Matt was digging outside for an upcoming patio - and are awesome. They also make their own coconut whipped cream, and offer the Affogato for those who can't do sun and hot drink at the same time. Great coffee, nummy gluten free treats, clean tables with plug-ins for your notebook (free wifi!). I highly recommend this place to anyone. read more

Its a decent spot with good outdoor space but it has THE WORST SERVICE I've ever experienced. You've probably already heard but the signs in there are insane. Not wanting to get yelled at I went straight to the counter and order a coffee. That red haired barista took my money without a word and served me my americano. After looking around for cream I asked her where it was and with an audible sign she got off her computer (I saw later she was just on facebook) and handed me the cream out of the fridge. While none of this is really major, the whole thing just turned me off. I haven't done anything to you barista lady, just do your job and stop acting like a martyr! I've been back twice after that and the barista and experience are always the same. Whether I asked for the bathroom code or the wifi password or what kind of milk they had she gave me the same routine. Do not go here, there are cheaper places to get average coffee and crappy service. read more

I LOVE this coffee shop!! I was hooked the first time I came here. The owners greet you with a friendly hello and smile...such nice people! The atmosphere is so warm and inviting: a few comfy couches and chairs, cool tables and wood chairs, great lighting, fun art, plants, a bookcase filled with books and games, all kinds of cool coffee mugs, and the paint colors are all nice warm tones. They have a great patio, too, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet...looking forward to sitting out there in the summer! They have a great variety of food items: bagels, Mighty-O Donuts, sandwiches, and other pastries. Best of all, they have the BEST lattes in town! I crave their hazelnut lattes every morning!! Update--so I loved this place, even with it's quirks, but, unfortunately, it was a short-lived love affair. The music is great, the politics right up my alley, the decor funky and awesome and homey. I also totally respect that customer service is hard because people can be difficult, and try to make allowances wherever possible for attitude. However, I went there today to study for an upcoming exam, and found that while the people who work there are sweet to regulars, they're fairly unwelcoming if you outstay whatever their subjective limits are, even if you buy a $4+ drink, food and tip. I tried to compliment the male barista on the music after I'd been there for an hour or two, and was completely ignored, getting a strong "go away" vibe, despite the fact there was no one else around and plenty of seats to be had if there was a sudden rush. I finished up my studying as quickly as I could and moved on to another cafe that doesn't make you feel like a loafer for not being able to pay for each hour of work. What a shame. read more

I came in with a friend and the staff was rather rude when I told them I just wanted to get a mini donut. He told me that if I wanted to use their wifi I had to spend more money. I didn't even come for wifi I just came to sit with my friend and he made me feel like I was a waste of his time. Seemed like an inconvenience to him even though my friend DID order something. Her nutella latte didn't taste at all like nutella but rather a burnt mocha. Probably won't come back... kind of a shame because it has a cozy feel to it. read more

Just sat down and already love it. So cozy with twinkly Christmas lights, Colin Hay over the speakers, and the most delicious pear-cinnamon cider I have ever tasted. Baristas are considerate and helpful, and the seating options are perfectly varied- multiple tables with space to spread out, as well as comfy armchairs and couches. Excellent coffee!! So far this is my favorite coffeeshop in the Seattle area, but I am new to Seattle and I have many more to explore. They air-roast all their coffee and use very high quality beans. The flavor of the coffee is earthy, sweet and has a smooth consistency on the palate. No detected bitterness or off-flavors, unlike many other coffeeshops I visit. I am very impressed! Also, their coffee has a very uplifting caffeine effect versus the more jittery low-grade caffeine buzz I get off of Starbuckish types of coffees. Besides the coffee, the ambiance of the place is also wonderful. Good taste in decor. Every barista I have encountered at the register has also been very friendly, kind and patient. read more

First off, the owners are so nice! And you can tell they care about their coffee. They roast their own beans, make their own chocolate, etc. Secondly, the place is super cute... Definitely has its own feel to it. Plenty of plugs and fast WI-FI. Now onto the coffee. I drink black coffee... The blacker it is the better. If it tastes like it's straight from mother earth, that's the coffee I love. I typically shake my nose with pretentious coffee snobbery at faux coffee drinks consisting of a combination of mocha and - ccinos . The owners somehow convinced me to get a mocha. My sister got a white rose latte. Both were so silky smooth I felt like I was floating down Willy Wonka's chocolate river... Not too over powering, not too sweet, made with love. my absolute FAVORITE coffee shop in seattle! ever since moving to seattle, i've become a bit of a coffee snob, so im extremely picky when it comes to coffee and coffee shops. this place - by far - is the best around. the owners are extremely friendly, and the coffee is delicious as well. the environment is so cozy, clean, warming, and inviting. its the perfect place to plop down for an afternoon (or morning) of reading with a nice cup of coffee. i typically go here to do school work since it doesn't get too loud or crowded. the $.50 coffee refills don't hurt either :) they even have an outdoor patio that i definitely foresee myself using a lot this summer once the weather gets nice. free wifi & nice clean bathrooms as well! read more

Awesome first experience yesterday. I needed three things: coffee (easy!), wireless (love the password!), and an outlet for my dying phone (so generious!). The menu looks great so I will have to come back again for sure! The atmosphere was comfy and warm and the barista I spoke with was nice. The drip was super tasty as well. Wonderful setting and ridiculously cozy. Makes you feel slightly awkward though as you walk in and there are signs blaring everywhere that you MUST order before even setting your things down. I honestly felt like an alarm would go off if I set my computer bag down before waiting in the 6 person line for a coffee. The drinks are good (drip and hot chocolate both) and the service was ok, Barista not super friendly but not hostile either. Love love love! Matt and Sarah are adorable, very friendly and knowledgable about their products. They have put a lot of time and energy into providing the best possible ingredients and the coffee is WONDERFUL. I especially love the hemp milk lattes. Matt's chocolate mix (used in hot cocoas and mochas) is also fantastic. The shop is very cute and cozy, with a relaxed atmosphere. Parking can be a challenge, but it is a short and worth while walk from the u-district and some of Wallingford. Matt and Sarah also run the place on their own, so the hours aren't the most consistent. Lately, they have been posting changes in hours on their facebook page, so it's worth a look before making the trip over. This is definitely my favorite coffee shop near the U-district, I recommend it to everyone I can! read more

I love A Muddy Cup. I've never been dissatisfied with anything I've ordered, and I regularly buy bagged beans to use at home. The owners are always polite and friendly, and I respect them because they work hard for their business. I feel fortunate to have such a good, unique coffee shop so close to where I live. And as for everyone WHINING about all the signage - the first thing I thought when I noticed it myself was "wow, they must have had to deal with a lot of inconsiderate people to have to get to this point." I would assume they wouldn't have done it unless they felt it was necessary. I bet all of the people who complain about it cried when their teachers used red ink too. read more

I really love this place. It has a really relaxing ambiance (the music is perfect background volume and pretty good) with plenty of seating: super comfy couches perfect for reading, individual tables/seats and also areas where a small group could meet. The owners are always friendly, patient, and have let me smell all sorts of teas to help me decide. My go-to drink here is their almond milk lattes. They're the best I've had in Seattle. I love Muddy Cup. There's definitely something really nostalgic about the way it's decorated on the inside...it's probably the kitschy 70s vibe. Totes adorbs. The coffee and treats (read: muffins) have always been reaaally good here - their beans are roasted nicely, and thus my Americano is always super delicious. I'm sad when I have to take my coffee "to go", because all I want to do is hang out in a cozy armchair and read some sort of leather-bound book. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is that, most of the time, the customer service has been a little on the sullen side. This morning my barista was friendly enough, but almost every other time I've gone, the guy/gal behind the counter doesn't seem too enthused about the idea of helping me. It's not like it ruins my day or anything, but it might put some people off. I would also have to echo the previous reviewers and say the internet is pretty spotty. My friend and I came here on numerous occasions to plan a trip we were taking, and had multiple traffic jams on the information superhighway. That being said, I still love this place, and will continue to caffeinate here. Pro tip: pay with cash. Shhh...don't fight it. Just pay with cash. read more

this is one of my favourite places to get coffee in Seattle. PROS: 1) AMAZING coffee. They have so many flavours (guava, pumpkin, watermelon, peppermint, raspberry, hazelnut, caramel, strawberry, etc.) and plenty of dairy free milk options (soya, almond, coconut, hemp, rice). Plus, they're always creating cool seasonal combinations, like Tiramisu Cappuccino or Peanut Brittle Latte. 2) it's quiet and cozy - a great place to do some homework or catch up with a friend. 3) free wifi which works great. CONS: 1) the employees that are working whenever I'm there are super grumpy and not at all welcoming or friendly. it's a total shame. I used to be a barista for a long time, so I understand what it's like behind the counter, but being disengaged and grumpy is a huge turn off and not a good way to make people want to come back. 2) it's pretty cramped and not that much seating is available - especially if it's busy. Worth going just for the coffee, but if you want friendly baristas and lots of space to relax and chill with some friends, I'd head somewhere else. read more

Wow, wow and wow. I'm all about the "experience" I get at a coffee shop--- not jut whether the coffee is good. And "A Muddy Cup" has all the experience I'm looking for. The place has the look and feel of a friendly living room. There are several cozy corners to sit in and get lost in a book. There's also an outdoor patio when the weather is nice. (Right now, because it's Halloween, there's some dummy sitting out there, and he looked real to me.) This place has easily shot to the top of my list of favorite Seattle coffee shops. read more
