This place is adorable and I love the coffee and the owners. Comfy couches and chairs, the back patio is dope, secluded reminds me of a secret garden. Great for bringing friends and relaxing. Coffee is excellent, Mike roasts it himself and has been for years. Some people on Yelp complain about it but that's because they're used to terrible starbucks and like a lot of flavors and syrup. Sarah is a sweetheart and is friendly and warm. I lost my roommates cat and she gave me tips and guess what it came back so I owe her for that. Was a neighbor for many years but sadly I moved to San Diego. My muddy cup mug chipped in the move so I gotta hit them up for another. Stop whining about service fees and prefer cash. This place is precious, in the precocious bratty child way. I was tempted to write this review after the first sip of latte, but I was scared I'd be kicked out. I was meeting a friend. Perhaps I was more disappointed at the potential the Muddy Cup has that wasn't realized. It's a gorgeous converted house full of grandma knickknacks. The location is wonderful. Seating is a mix of couches and tables. I sat at the group table that only seats four but had a note saying you need a minimum of two people to sit there. I guess that means they don't allow randoms to share a table? There goes community. Even though it was near empty, I felt like I was going to be kicked out for breaking the two person rule while waiting for my friend. They also charge 1% for card transactions and encourage cash. I know it's less than the credit processing fee, but cash transactions are a security risk and possible (probable?) tax avoidance. The barista was gruff and the coffee was burnt. Oh, and I was expected to toast my own bagel. Yes, I sound snobby and accept I'm not the target market for the Muddy Cup. They make it clear they have a certain preferred clientele and I'm not it. Tucked up off of busy 45th street, it's like a java oasis featuring deep colors, soft lighting, and comfy furniture. The staff are very friendly, and were quick to help me decide from their huge menu of coffee and tea options. They also had a tasty-looking selection of baked goods on the morning I was there - I opted for a heavenly (and reasonably healthy) carrot cake muffin. The welcome mat seems as if it's being withdrawn and one prescriptive rule after another has taken it's place. Rules such as those of no shoes, no shirt, no service, no outside food or beverages, wifi and bathrooms for customer use only, pay for your drink before claiming a seat, surcharge for use of a credit card, 2hr maximum wifi usage with each $2 minimum purchase, no weapons, nuclear-free zone, etc. are perhaps necessary. Best hot chocolate in Seattle that I've found so far. So. Damn. Good. This place is super small and cute, equipped with comfy couches and chairs for relaxed enjoyment of your hot beverage of choice. You could even work in here if you wanted, but it doesn't have an upbeat vibe if you're hoping to stay focused. It's like being at home, which I love. My boyfriend needed to do some work on his laptop and we were driving around the Greenlake/Wallilngford area and decided to pick the first coffee place we drove past (at the time of thought). Muddy Cup came up. We found a parking spot a block up from the cafe. When we walked in we instantly fell in love with the warm cozy home sweet home feel! I ordered a 16 latte and he ordered a 16 oz americano. Both came in cool tall mugs, and they were made perfectly! We found a small table in the corner with two chairs and a fun old fashioned lamp. We had fun looking at the other cool furniture and pictures. We also had a good snicker over the cute wifi password name The staff seemed genuinely friendly, which honestly is hard to find. Most coffee shops, the friendliness seems forced or you don't get much of it at all. I also want to note that when I walked into their key-locked bathroom it smelled like walking into a grandmas kitchen after making an apple pie! Conclusion. Now that I quit my job by this place, I am going to make a review since it was remarkably the WORST coffee I have ever in my life had. That thankfully I will never have the misfortune of drinking again. First off, when you see the sign and little house you want to go in. Seems welcoming and cozy. WRONG. The dude with the ponytail seriously was the rudest person i've ever come across. He doesn't even realize it. I'm standing in there, immediately feeling tension in the air. It is NOT a warm, welcoming coffee joint. The atmosphere is uncomfortable. You feel almost rude for being a customer. I tried to give off a nice polite presence, tipped well, was polite to the "barista". You are only acknowledged once you pay. It would have been nice to be greeted when I came in, as this place is small and it was pretty awkward coming in on some conversation. That's Seattle for ya. He took 10 minutes to take care of the two guys in front of me getting coffee. Wouldn't stop talking. Atleast work AND talk at the same time! If you are in Fremont, this coffee shop is worth visiting. What made this place different from the other shops is the wide variety of flavored syrups for lattes and Italian sodas. From what I remember, there was a list of at least twenty flavors, including pumpkin, watermelon, peppermint, strawberry, raspberry, hazelnut, caramel, vanilla, and peanut butter. After taking a few minutes to decide which flavor we wanted, my sister and I ordered the peanut butter latte and peppermint latte. I thought the barista would make our drinks too sweet, but the sweetness was perfect! I was definitely surprised by the peanut butter latte. It was probably one of the best lattes I had in Seattle. My sister also ordered a baked good, and it was okay. Just stick to the drinks. The coffee shop is cozy, and the interior design gives it an eccentric spirit (which I totally love!). I don't think you'll understand what that means until you see the decor for yourself. This place is just across the highway from university district nestled really cozy in the middle of a neighborhood! Very discreet from the street because the building is covered in ivy and plants. My friend who took me here is a big fan. He says usually comes here to either chill out at night with a good book on their retro furniture or for a quick cup of joe in the morning. I brought my dog along who I had to tie up outside, but they had this adorable patio that was closed when we went I would have really enjoyed to sit in kind of in the backyard area of the building. Cozy as fuck. This place is like visiting grandma's house if grandma was an eccentric hipster with an embroidery fetish. All the walls and all the available shelf space is covered with seemingly random bric-a-brac undoubtedly acquired from the estate sales of 1000 cool grandmas. Even the dining tables and furniture could have come from grandma's house. I found this very comforting in spite of the small confines of the establishment. The staff seemed pretty friendly too. Because the place is so small, if you're in the rear section, it is as if you're sharing a table(and conversation) with everyone present. Staff included. Awkward but ok. The coffee was decent. I had a latte and a regular cupa and both were good. No super exceptional but decent to the point where I suspect that you will be able to find me here again in the future. My friend had one of their teas and I was happy to see that they carry a better than good selection of loose leaf tea. This fact is extremely important to me and often overlooked by small coffee shops. The wifi was a bit on the weak side. Probably because the place was full of people on laptops and smartphones sucking up bandwidth along with their coffee. If that is the case, maybe Muddy Cup should invest in a better wireless router. on the other hand, I can understand a tiny coffee shop like this wanting to discourage people from camping out for hours and hours doing homework or whatever and taking up precious space from other potential customers. And I say this as a person who regularly camps out for hours and hours at coffee shops. But I do try to justify my presence by continuing to buy stuff for as long as I''m there. BEWARE: if you plan to come here and sit down for a cup of coffee with someone who is not thirsty, your friend may be asked to wait outside while you finish your drink! This may be especially true if you happen to be there to study for an exam with someone... My husband is a private tutor, and he usually meets his students at their homes, but if the parents cannot be there, then he meets them in a public place, usually a library or a coffee shop. When at a coffee shop, he always makes a point to "pay rent" on his table by purchasing food and/or a drink, and leaving a nice tip. Like any respectful customer, he never camps out for hours or takes up a lot of space. He has been running his tutoring business this way for over 5 years, and no one at a coffee shop has ever even batted an eye at his presence...until the day he went to A Muddy Cup. Earlier this week, he met 2 students there for a quick study session. He bought a coffee (and tipped over 30% BEFORE all of the horrible service). One of the two girls he was meeting with also bought a coffee, but the third person in their group had already purchased a drink elsewhere before their meeting. As the three of them sat down at a table and opened their books, the barista (who later identified herself as the owner) informed them that outside beverages were not allowed, and the drink would have to be thrown out if she was going to stay there. So, the girl agreed to dispose of her beverage. But that wasn't good enough...the owner then stated that only paying customers were allowed in her establishment, and unless all 3 of them bought something, the one person in their group who did not buy anything would have to leave. Yes, that really happened. It had become strangely clear that they were not welcome there. However, time was of the essence because the girls had work they were counting on getting done before they had to rush off to class. So, once all three people had followed the rigid rules and purchased their own drinks, they stayed and finished their school work, and then each person went on with their day with the icky memory of A Muddy Cup in the back of their mind. To be fair, there were signs posted around the coffee shop that state you must establish a relationship with the business (i.e. buy something) if you are going to hang out there, but requiring every single person in a group to make a purchase seems extremely unreasonable and very bad form for any business owner. read more

I know my review is going to be a drop in the ocean of all the positive reviews. I've been here a few times and it was okay, not bad. However, one time in particular was not a great experience for me. I went up to order a nutella mocha and I said "I'll have the exact same thing" (the exact same as what the boyfriend got, but we were paying separately). The barista said to me, "that's actually a pretty hard drink to make, just for future reference." I replied meekly with a "sorry". What the hell? I was so stunned. Ummmm... I obviously should've ordered four nutella mochas in that case. I don't know what the barista even meant by that. I have received some of the worst customer service here of my entire life. The most appalling instance of this occurred today when I went in for some coffee and to work on my laptop. As all the seating was full except for a larger table that is usually reserved for 2+ people, I had no other option but to sit there. I apologetically explained the situation to the barista since the table is marked, however he was anything but understanding. I sat down to work and made it only about 15 minutes before a couple came in. The barista immediately came over to me and bluntly told me I needed to move because two people had come in together. As there was no other seating available, I was forced to gulp down most of my coffee, pack up all of my things, and leave as everyone watched. Nevermind that I was a paying customer and had been seated there first. Had I been asked to share the table with them I would have been more than happy to make room, but I was not even given this option. I've been forced to come here for "office hours" with my professor, and I resent it -- a lot. My first encounter with this creature, she actually left her station and FOLLOWED me around after I entered the building (...since it was my first time there, yeah, maybe I was being a wee bit slow. But I was checking tables for my professor -- by the way it is way too DARK in there.). Once I found the location of the group, and *dared* to set down my bag -- then the fireworks started: Coffee-Capitalist Overlord: "YOU!" Zriel. (::jumping::): "um, moi?" Over-Caffeinated Capitalist Overlord: "YOU MUST BUY SOMETHING!" Zriel: "uh, okay...I was just setting down my stuff first." ::runs to buy some overpriced tea -- which is barely warm. Really, they can't even boil water -- that's how BAD this place is::: Every encounter since then has been worse. 1/2 the time the internet is shot (*and if I had a dollar for every time that someone in the group shared with me that they gave up on the internet I'd well be on my way to being able to buy this place a few new routers and its own personal hotspot). Also, the crappola of "BUY BUY BUY" signage is a serious turnoff -- who are these people? The used car salesmen of shitty lukewarm coffee? Look, this is a pretty sad place to spend any sort of time or money. It is a coffee shop that only wants to see your money -- and has made that message clear in their decor. I want to come and support the local coffee joint but this place has taken the cake for being arguably the worst in service and reliability I have ever had in Seattle. The women behind the counter has been pretty nice, but the guy who works the counter is a punk. Him having to make your coffee is seriously a burden for him, and eye rolling is a usual. I'll list a few things that really make this place a loser First, I get that we are a little more liberal up here in Seattle than a majority of the US. Regardless of your political affiliation, all you should really want out of your coffee shop is a good cup of coffee. I don't have the time, or energy to wade thru all of your political bullshit just to get a cup. The owner's spew their political philosophies on everything in the store (trash cans are labeled Donald Trump, etc.) and they jump at the chance to bad mouth other coffee establishments. As soon as you enter this place and take one look at the guy behind the counter, you will know what I'm talking about. If you want to cry about your political views or how the world isn't fair, by a journal. Second. The quality of coffee is so hit and miss, and it sooooo shouldn't be for Seattle. When everyone else in this state can make a consistent cup of coffee. You would think some snobby, full-of-itself coffee house would at LEAST be able to make a solid coffee. Like I said before, the women is pretty nice, and seems to know what she is doing but the guy is clueless, and proud of it. He burns it every time. I made the drastic mistake of telling him that it tastes bad. Not even kidding he looks me straight in the face and says "If you don't like it, don't come back. I couldn't care." I had to start laughing because I was so dumbfounded by this pompous ass's response. If you expect a "thanks for coming in!" or any kind of remark, forget it. Third. They can't figure out when they are going to be open and when they are going to close. They can't be bothered to show up for work at least 3 days out of the month and they don't even open until 7, sometimes. You would think that if you owned a business you would want to be open and serve as many Seattleites that kind of really want to buy a cup from you. The mark up on coffee is about 85%, everyone knows it's a pretty easy thing to sell, and profit margin is big. When you have a great location like these people do you should be able to knock it out of the park. Not A Muddy Cup. They don't want your business, and if you want to give it to them, they will do their best to piss you off. Conclusion. It's a couple of ultra-liberal hippies expecting everyone to accept their lifestyle and business practices, but they couldn't care about yours. Way over-priced, not to mention the 2% credit card charge. I get this game. They charge the 2 percent to cover their tax as there is no tax on most cash transactions. Makes sense I guess, they must have high rent and its hard to pay rent when you never work. This place is a lame. It's designed by lames, for lames. Do yourself a favor. Save your money and support Fuel or even Starbucks. At least there they have people who are happy to see you and know how to get you set up with a cup of coffee. I've gone to this place a few times before and up until my recent visit, would have given it 3 stars. Three stars for the lukewarm service from the one barista I always seem to encounter. On top of that, I'd always thought their numerous signs posted everywhere with their many "rules" were a bit of a turn off. However, coming from out of town, and not knowing of other coffee shops within walking distance, I've put up with the perfunctory service in exchange for a cup of coffee and a spot to read while my husband takes care of errands in the area. On my most recent visit, the barista who helped me, someone I'd never seen before, did offer me a smile and eye contact, so thank you for that. I ordered, paid, and tipped like a well-behaved customer before taking a seat. Shortly after, my husband finished his errand and arrived. His intention was simply to come get me so that we could leave to our next destination, not to order coffee. He sat down at my table briefly to show me what he had bought, and then I gathered my things to go. However, he mentioned that he really had to use the restroom. I thought, what could it hurt to give him the restroom code--after all, what coffee shop would make a big deal out of a paying customer's husband needing to use the facility before taking off? Can you guess where this is going? I made the bad decision to give my husband the code to the restroom. He went in, and not one minute later, I overhear the second barista (not the woman who served me) commenting to the first (the one who served me) about "that guy in the bathroom." They had a conversation in which the first barista asked the second how "that guy" got in the restroom. I hear the second barista mumble something in a lowered voice, and then the first one instructs the second how to handle it. When my husband came out a couple minutes later, the second barista rushed to ask him, "What would you like to order?" My husband had to explain that he was just meeting up with me, and that we were on our way out. I waited to hear the baristas say something like, "Oh, that's cool," but--silence. Complete turn off. Yes, we see your many rules posted all over the place about paying before taking a seat, paying with cash, what to do with the light switch, and on and on. So yes, I suspected that you might not be so forgiving of folks who, like my husband, came in to get me and who had the audacity to have to use the restroom at your facility. I'm sorry I didn't have the foresight to ask my husband not to flush yet, so that I myself could go in there and flush for him, and that way, we could argue that it was really the paying customer who used your restroom. After this latest experience, I'd rather go down to the Winchell's Donuts down the street and pass the time with donuts and cafeteria coffee than come back here. read more

A super duper cute coffee shop. Really. It's all comfy and kitschy inside. You just kind of want to curl up with your drink order and relax for hours on their squishy chairs/couches. Sadly i'm usually here burning time before my tattoo appointments down the street, so the hours turn out to be more like 15-30 min stints. Service is friendly. The coffee is damn good. Everything comes in recycle-able containers, and they have yummy pastry options to nosh on while enjoying your coffee as well. One hopes a coffee house is a friendly place, rather than forbidding, as the case here. There are signs on the tables instructing the customer to order before seating. In case that isn't sufficient, there are much larger signs, using the scary Halloween font, reminding you of the same outdoors. Also to clean up after your dog, but we had none. Coffee and sweets are as good as any other cafe, but service is definitely unfriendly. After ordering coffee, I asked for ice for the water, received it, and said thank you. No reply. It says on the recycling bins that nothing should be garbage. We weren't sure where all the items would go, so left our goods on the table. As we were leaving, the server admonished us for that. We usually do bus our table, but when we haven't, we have never been told off. With the signs, service, and additional 2% charge for cards, we have never found a less friendly coffee house! read more

A Muddy Cup - Is it sanitary to use/ serve cups with chips? No. Ew. - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Seattle, Washington

I have come here thrice so far, and all three experiences have been outstanding. First, the coffee is really, really good. I am no coffee connoisseur, but Muddy Cup's coffee tastes great and keeps me awake for a good six hours. Second, the shop is kind of divided into two parts, the back is quiet and perfect to get even serious work done in. The music is non-distracting, the table lamps create a lovely homey atmosphere for studying, and it's warm. Finally, lots of chargers and a large, single-use restroom and excellent wi-fi. Am I dreaming? One thing I strongly dislike about the place is the very in-your-face Trump bashing. I am no Trump supporter, but I also believe that one must criticize ideas, not people, and I find this kind of smug, holier-than-thou Trump-hating wearisome. No stars deducted for this though, since it doesn't affect their service or coffee in any way. Another point (for other customers to note) - they charge extra if you pay using a credit card, and this isn't advertised very prominently. So bring cash to save some money. My almond milk latte. That's what this is all about. I found A Muddy Cup after searching for "almond milk latte" on my Yelp app. (So convenient!) I'm no longer drinking soy, and I don't consume dairy. I was excited to see this place offered a variety of alternative options - AND, I drive by it every day on my way to work. Also convenient! It is definitely a cute espresso bar. It's cozy with ambient lighting. The flow from ordering to waiting for the order is a little bit awkward. Where do I stand while I'm waiting for my coffee so as to not get in the way of others pouring their self-serve drip and cream? The owners/baristas were nice, but I wouldn't say that it was memorable service. I know customer service comes up in all my reviews, but it's so important. The drink itself was OK - the coffee itself wasn't very rich and I wouldn't say it was outstanding. Though, I do plan to go back--it could have just been an off day or maybe the shots were pulled funny or something. Overall, I love the alternatives, from vegan and gluten-free treats (yay!) to offering a TON of milk alternatives (yay, again!). But, I admit, I *am* hoping for a tastier latte the next time I come in. read more

Think before you make a stink. Your customers deserve better. I've been in about 6-8 times since I moved my company into the Wallingford neighborhood about 4 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure I've ordered the same thing every time; 2 shots over ice medium size to go cup. To which I then add half and half. I'm not expecting the barista to know my order as I'm not really a regular yet. What I'm NOT expecting is to be chastised in front of other customers for doing something I didn't know was wrong. Apparently 2 shots over ice with more than an unspecified maximum amount of half and half is called a breve. Huh? News to me since I've been drinking the same coffee drink on summer days since I moved to Seattle in 1993. Perhaps a sign posted, 'No more than a 1/4 oz of half and half or your breaking the law-of-the-barista!' is needed to insure order is maintained. After preparing my drink the barista leaned over the counter confronting me that, 'next time I'm not giving you a 12 oz cup. You're only getting an 8 oz.' My reply is a dumbfounded: 'What?! What are you talking about?' Barista raises her voice stating, 'You just made yourself an iced breve. Next time you're only getting an 8 oz cup.' I reply, "Okay but I don't even know what that is" and walked out. I'm not going to get into it over coffee drinks with a barista. If anything she's the one who seemed weird getting all agro over my supposed extra ice or half and half. But really?! Is that how you treat customers? I did tip nearly a dollar for a $2.65 drink, close to 30% tip. That was before getting fingered as a coffee-cheat. So let's do the math. Est. cost of an ounce of half and half: $0.149 (based on $2.39 for a pint according to http://www.longmontdairy.com/prices.php) Maybe 1 oz would be ok but 2.5 oz is too much (aka crossing the breve line). I honestly don't think I put in even half an oz. I'll ballpark I helped myself to $0.37 when I was only "allowed" $0.149 in half and half. Let's give the mid sized cup a value of +$0.05 and "extra" ice (+$0.02 estimated) over the cost of an 8oz cup. Do you see how ridiculous this is getting? I make an effort to support local small businesses because I also own one. When it comes to coffee in Wallingford along 45th there are several coffee shop options. From now on I'll choose between Uptown, Fuel & Mosaic and encourage others to do the same. BTW - my 2 shots over ice...err....I mean breve was excellent. read more

I enjoy laid back, but too laid back is a problem. I've been there 4 times. Once, 2 people who worked there were arguing. Another time, I had sat down to drink my coffee. 5 minutes later, I had to leave because they told me they had just closed because it was slow, which was about 1.5hrs earlier than their business hours. A third time, I walked over there with my girlfriend and they were closed during normal business hours. Other than that, this place is good. Great coffee, friendly staff, good atmosphere (so long business isn't too slow so you can finish your coffee). I'll change it to 4 stars after awhile w/out being turned away from abnormal business hours. read more

I've only been here once, and the experience was rather pleasant. I appreciate that they offer some unique beverages as well as coffee ice cubes to keep your summer drinks from getting diluted. But I have to echo other reviewer's sentiments regarding the excessive rule signage. A Muddy Cup is a darling little shop, cozy and quirky, with a gorgeous back patio shaded by trees. Unfortunately, everywhere you look in this place you encounter a glaring sign instructing you to do or not do something. Pay with cash (or face a 2% penalty), order before sitting, restroom for customers only, wifi limited to two hours, on and on and on. And while I loved sitting on the back porch the four bright yellow visually instructive "Pick up your dog poop" signs kind of killed the ambiance. This place would definitely be a local favorite if its management matched its ambiance. read more
