Manteigaria is a charming little shop that delivers one of the most satisfying and authentic pastel…read morede nata experiences you will find in Lisbon. What makes it special is watching the pastries being handmade right in front of you, which adds a level of freshness and craftsmanship that you can actually taste. The service was super fast and friendly. The pastel de nata came out perfectly, with that delicate flaky crust and warm custard that just hits differently when you know it was made moments ago. The espresso was equally impressive, rich and smooth, and the two together make for a simple but near perfect combination. If you are in the area, this is an easy and very satisfying stop.

The crust was super flaky and the tart was nice and warm out of the oven, but I didn't like the flavor of the custard. I did forget to add cinnamon to the top, but I don't think it would have helped me personally. The woman who stood next to me at the counter had a nearly orgasmic experience next to me, so it's obvious that my taste buds are apparently off. I loved the patience of the server, who got confused when I told her I wanted to eat in but wanted to take water to go. Note to self...Portuguese folks want to have their "to go" as "takeaway." What I also didn't know was that there was no place to sit!! I scooted down the counter just like all the other folks to watch the bakers prep the next gozillion pastries for the day. That was interesting. Then, I didn't know how to bus my dishes. I just left them on the counter like all the other folks and went away. I wouldn't skip going because of my personal taste buds, though. Enjoy it for yourself and let me know if you have a different opinion than I did!

I wanted to not like them because they're a massive tourist attraction but they were incredible, not as sweet as the ones from the other places, fresh out of the oven, super flaky crust. I'm a fan of a higher custard to crust ratio and this definitely hit the spot. Remember to add a bit of cinnamon on top to bring out the custard flavor more. There are three queues: one for sit-down service, one for the historical counter (whatever that may be, we didn't stick around long enough to check that out), and one for takeaway which is the fastest and basically had no line, where you can take one or four and enjoy them in one of the nearby parks. Also a gift shop a few steps away in case you want more Pasteis de Belem!

They spoke English (not expected, but pleasant break for our Google Translate app) and offered to-go cups/containers, which was great for our continued adventures. Inside was cozy and had window reading nooks, a few couches and chairs, and a designated area for those with computers to sit. Fun signage and a covered glass enclosure showing off all of their amazing baked goods. Our cold brews with oat milk were smooth and delicious and the croissant with scrambled egg sandwiches were huge (2 meals for me) and the eggs cooked to perfection. Prices were a tad higher than what we've had in Portugal thus far at mom and pop cafes, but still less than in the USA.

Great service, food, drinks, and ambiance. Can't wait to come back here when I'm in Lisbon again.

It's coconut is primarily on the top and it's not as filled with butter. The Chinese kind typically had coconut in the middle and feels like a lot of butter and coconut mixed. Just an observation.
