While I've had a really good experience 2 of the 3 times I've been serviced here, the 3rd stop-in unfortunately left an unshakeably bad taste in my mouth. On a recent Saturday, I had the urge to treat myself to a mani/predi. Knowing A Polished Work's strong preference for pre-booked appointments, I called prior to heading over and asked if they had any openings for a walk-in. "Yes, we have an opening in 10 minutes. We can schedule you" was the response. I then proceeded to drop by, provided my information, and watched one of the young ladies enter everything into the computer to set my appointment. Shortly after sitting down, the manicurist approached me and mentioned she was running a bit behind and that as soon as she finished up her current client's manicure, she'd be right with me. I was okay with waiting, considering she politely informed me of the longer wait. Things took a turn for the worse when an hour later, as I'm still waiting, the same young lady that set my appointment tells me that someone must have scheduled services online as she was entering my information and therefore their appointment would supersede mine, meaning that on top of already waiting 1 hour, I'd have to wait another hour before I could be serviced. I understand that things happen but what really rubbed me the wrong way is that not one single employee tried to offer up any real solution, proposed discount consolation, or peace offering for the major miss on their or their technology's part. It was completely acceptable behavior for them to accept the person that, although went through the traditional route of booking online, just walked in and hadn't already been waiting for an hour. They wouldn't dare communicate to that client that she'd have to wait because there was a logistics or system mixup. On the other hand, it was acceptable to add insult to injury by suggesting that my only option was to wait yet another hour while I watched someone who just walked in get prompt service before I did. I ended up walking out after presented with that "option". Although my mani/pedi was not pre-planned, I intentionally passed up several in-and-out salons to support a business in the community, after being told that I could in fact be serviced. I truly to do wish the company continued success, but would really challenge them to be more mindful of HOW they handle mishaps. Unfortunately, I have no plans to return and can no longer sing the company's praises or recommend this business to my friends/family after having been so slighted. Ebony read more

They have an awesome salon, great service, and their events are very nice. This place is very much more upscale than the average nail shops in the community, without the hiked prices and filthy facilities. I used to go to a black owned salon on Fullerton, which shall remain nameless, thinking that I would have to suffer just to support black businesses. The first time I went to this shop 10 months ago, I had a great experience. Appointment started on time. Got good service. It was a great vibe. Fast forward to today and I'm left disappointed. I had a no chip manicure scheduled for 11am with nail tech Lisa. I arrived at 10:45am. She was finishing up a client when I got there so I assumed we would start on time. Long story short, she serviced someone else without an appointment before me with complete disregard that I had a scheduled appointment. When made aware multiple times by me and her colleagues that I was her 11am appt, she completely ignored us and proceeded to service her walk in client. She didn't apologize or speak directly to me to see if I would mind or anything. It was unbelievable. At around 11:25, she finishes up and then asks me to come have a seat as if I still want her to service me after the complete disrespect and disregard of my time. I had an 11:30 pedi scheduled with a different tech & knew it would also be rude to throw her off her schedule. Since it was already time for my pedi, I told her no thank you. I shouldn't have had to do that though. APW markets themselves as an appt only place who honors their appointments. Its the main reason I went there. I can understand if you're running a few minutes behind, but to allow a friend to just come in and be serviced before a client who had an appointment is completely disrespectful and unprofessional. In spite of Lisa's unprofessionalism, Cami did a good job on my pedi. She was very nice and I'm happy with how it turned out. I'm just disappointed that I scheduled to have a mani and pedi but only left with a pedi. This makes me skeptical to patron this salon again in fear that this will happen again. read more

First off the ambiance is decent they ask you for water or cranberry juice which is really nice not a lot of places do this!!! However it went downhill from there I booked my appointment online however I was confused as to what to put in because I didn't know what I needed I haven't had my nails done in a month I've been too busy :(! I wanted a pedicure and fill in with no chip on top. I was left with the option of putting in mani pedi so that's what I put in because I was simply confused. I was told there wasn't enough time to do my requested service because my nails needed extra time which was fine I said do my toes only. They said are you sure, I said I really don't have a choice because I don't want to run into someone else's time behind me. A few minutes later my technician said "well I can just file your top half down and fill in the gel nail. I said you sure you'll be able to do that. She said YES OF COURSE..... typical sales pitch right?? So I went with it half way through her painting my nails I noticed bumps.... indicating the acrylic was not filed to the skin correctly..... not only that the polish was just oozing out of the cap while she was painting my nail..... Quite unprofessional I've never had that happen to me. Although I'm not a professional in the field I have went to the top nail spa in Atlanta and California so I know how the service is supposed to be. Regardless of the poor job I was supposed to pay a final total of $85 for me and my moms nails. I had an email that said I get 25% off of my services but when it was time to pay they said I can only get 25% off my pedicure because that's the only service I correctly booked online. I will never be back! I wasted my money because I'm getting this re done tomorrow :( read more

A Polished Work is the full package with reasonable prices. I made the mistake of trying other shops for a few weeks and I ended up running back to the ladies at APW. Plain and simple, they do quality work AND they care about the health of your nails (which FYI most shops do not). The APW shop also provides a positive and welcoming atmosphere. I've yet to find a shop experience (with reasonable prices) that tops this one. read more

After numerous attempts at trying to book manis and pedis for 3 people (without success) I decided to just drop by A Polished Work. Upon arrival I saw two police cars. When I went in I was relieved to see the officers making a friendly business visit. This is definitely a safe nail salon. Unfortunately I was not greeted with a beverage offer, but I assumed this was because of the understaffing. Nonetheless my therapist Ariel did an amazing job on my feet. I explained to her how I enjoy the natural experience and she performed like a pro! Once this location is fully staffed I believe this salon will be a great place for a girl's event. Worst nail experience EVER! Very inexperienced technicians. My nails looked a hot mess after spending 2 hours here. Yelp is usually very help but they were dead wrong about this place. This place is definitely not 4 stars. Plus the manicure chairs are superrrr uncomfortable. Not worth the time or the headache. Save your money and choose more experienced people to work on your nails. read more

Where do I begin.... A Polished Work Nail Spa is the gem of the south side!! Cozy, comforting and always worth the trip! My daughter and I have been patrons of Tomocha for over 3 years now (including time at a spa that no longer exists) and we would not trust our mani-no chip and pedicures to anyone else. The shop "black owned" a refreshing change from most nail shops in the area and surrounding area which hustle you in like cattle, barely have a word to say to you and speak in other languages to their peers while servicing you. Instead, A Polished Work Nail Spa treats you like royalty with complimentary beverages, a bit of shop humor from time to time and professional, fabulous service! I was excited to try a polished work because I am eager to support small black business. It also seemed like the service would be exceptional because it never seemed overcrowded and costumers looked happy and relaxed. I got a no chip mani+ pedi and the total was a little pricey 35.00 for each, but I will pay more for good service and for my nails to stay chip free for AT LEAST TWO WEEKS. The pedicure was great, however, I was really displeased with my no chip manicure. The nail Technician that I did my nails did not put a top coat on my nails the first time so I had at least three chips THREE DAYS into my mani. My nails were peeing at the edges and generally did not feel sealed. When I called back to explain the situation, hoping to come in and get the situation remedied to extend my manicure and complete the job I had already paid for, I had to pay additional money and the same stylist still forgot to put the final top coat on a nail that she originally stated she repaired. Now this nail is chipped and I just went back to repair all of this. All in all , I did not leave the salon with all of my nails rock hard shiny and cured from a final top coat that is held under the UV light both times I left the salon. I even asked the nail technician if I was good to leave the salon the first time because my nails did not look or feel shiny and rock hard, something that usually is the final product of a no chip. Not sure if it was the nail technician but I'm disappointed in my experience and probably won't return. read more

A Polished Work was just that. "Polished!" A quaint, unassuming location with nice feminine decor. I appreciate a black owned neighborhood shop, where each customer was greeted upon their entry.into the establishment.. The staff are skilled, licensed professionals, friendly to all the customers and each other. (I'm observant) Finally and most importantly, it didn't have that sweatshop feel. but they were timely. The shop was clean, tools sanitized, fresh clean towels, tubs were cleaned, not just sprayed down. It wasn't noisy or crowed. It was a relaxed atmosphere. I was relieved when I didn't see electric machines by the foot baths, tools that draw blood at cuticles or knives that cut off skin at the toenail. Thank goodness! My overall rating was very very good which is why I booked another appointment before leaving and I've been coming back ever since. read more

I was waiting for my boyfriend to get his hair cut, so I decided to find a nail salon while I waited. I then stumbled upon this gem. It is far nicer on the inside than other nail salons and the staff is super friendly! I got a no-chip mani with a design and I was very satisfied. I was very impressed by the appointment process. I called to make the appointment and received an email confirmation. I was also able to create an account on the website to book future appointments and track rewards points which will grant me free services in the future. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm welcome, the atmosphere was calm, and the decor very chic. The prices are reasonable and my receipt was conveniently sent to my email. The fact that they followed up the next day shows they are committed to excellent customer service, and for that reason alone I will return. The only reason I don't score 5 stars is because this isn't THEE BEST No Chip I've ever received. It's good. Just not the best. read more

I absolutely loved my experience at A Polished Work. My cousin and I had a little girls day. Monica did her nails and Mocha did mine. I'm sure she (my cousin) will agree with everything I have to say. I have been going to shops owned by Koreans for about 4 years straight. My usual was an overlay but also a pedicure every now and then. I won't demean anyone's business but after yesterday I will never step foot in one of those shops again. Mocha gave me an experience as a nail tech that I'd never had before. I came to her with an overlay that hadn't been filled in a month and month old chipped polish on my toes. I was ready to let the overlay go because I could see the health of my nails deteriorating. Not only did she do an amazing job.. Every step she took and every product she used she explained what it was and what it would do. She was honest about the state of my nails but also assured me that we would get them back healthy. The shop is clean and the decor was beautiful. My cousin and and I both got a mani pedi. The ladies were very professional, punctual, but also hilarious. I just had a great experience overall and as Mocha said "do you want to be a client or a customer" because there is a huge difference..I'm now a client. I really like this place. I've been coming here for about almost a year. I haven't had any problems or issues. This location is about 15 minutes away from the South Loop but it's worth the drive. Amazing place, best nail salon I have been to in chicago thus far. Very thorough and they take their time to do an awesome job. Very professional and most of all black owned! Very low key intimate location, nice aura and not full of people. Quality work, will definately be back for all of my future services, they go above and beyond. Now!!! The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because they wrote my credit card information down without permission and did not destroy it adequately, instead of shredded, it was balled up and thrown into the trash. I decided to check out this nail salon during a recent trip to Chicago. My friend and I wanted to get mani/pedis together. I figured it wouldn't be busy after the easter holiday. I called Tuesday when they opened at 10 am. I stated I wanted to get a mani and pedi with my friend. The person answering the phone stated that they could service us at 3. I arrived 10 min before 3. The salon is unassuming from the outside but very nice inside. When I walked in I was surprised to only see one nail tech. She said hello when I walked in. I ate my food and waited on my friend who was 15 min late. The nail tech was doing a manicure at the time and their was another customer who was getting her toenails dried. The nail tech did apologize for being behind schedule and said they were busy today. For some reason I assumed more nail technicians were going to show up - never happened. 2 hrs later she finally started my pedicure. I asked was someone else working and she said no we only have one person on Tuesdays. Which is why I don't understand why she would schedule us at the same time in the first place. My friend left after her pedicure because she couldn't wait for manicure. When she did my manicure she did not use base coat. I asked her about it and she said it's not necessary for cnd vinyl polish which should last 1 wk. Needless to say my nails started chipping in two days. I thought after all of this she would at least discount my services for my inconvenience and patience - she did not. Doubt I will come back next time I'm in town. read more

Had the pleasure of taking my 7 yr old daughter and my 16 yr old niece there for a special mani/pedi treat. They have a really nice pack for kids under 12 called a the princess. Also, the carry a lot of specials. They treated the girls there like "princesses". Everything from the pretty colors of their nails to the color changes of the water was cute. Even found a color to match my daughter's Easter dress. I'm a man so not into the mani/pedi stuff, so was able to get connected to their WiFi and watch a movie on my tablet. They even convinced me to get a manly hand scrub and nail cleaning. Overall, very nice and clean place. Music throughout. read more

I have been frequenting this nail shop for about three months now and it's always a great experience. They specialize in nail care and will not damage your nails with the drill bits that other shops use. The service is impeccable and the shop is very sanitary. My nails always look great and the technicians are passionate about what they do which is always a plus when your looking for great service. They always offer you a drink whether you want water or wine when you arrive. It's never crowded and they always take you at your scheduled time. They do not overlap their appointments and have you waiting forever. I had a particularly great experience with Ariel at the shop today. She was awesome and professional. We had a great conversation and she was quick but efficient with my nails. It was like a spa treatment for nails. I will never go to another nail salon now that I have found a polished work.
