Here's the deal. These are hard working people and they got the job done. My year 2000 vehicle passed smog and that's why I came here. But here's the most important info you need to know before you go. If you use your Valpak discount coupon (available via mail or the Valpak web site), you do not get a free retest if you car fails smog. After studying the fine print on the coupon it does indeed say this. But it was an unwelcome surprise and annoying to have to decide whether to use the coupon on the spot. I almost caved in to paying the extra money just to play it safe. Why put your customers through this kind of used car salesman high pressure sales game? People have been complaining about this coupon on yelp since 2017. Don't expect them to make the coupon more clear. I have visited this business on two separate occasions in the last month for both of my vehicles, and I will continue to. The people who work there are friendly, quick, and there to serve you like family. My first trip, I went on a Saturday morning. There were about three other cars being smogged, so there was a "longer" wait than usual... 30min. I decided to walk downtown while I waited and explored a few shops. By the time I returned, my vehicle had been checked and parked safely by the service provider. They estimated the wait time perfectly. Overall great experience. My second trip, I went on a weekday morning. I was the only car and it took 15min! I took a stroll around the block while I waited. (They have a small seating are inside or convenient benches outside if you prefer to wait that way). It was yet another pleasant experience. AND they recognized me, which made me feel good. This place is a bit more run down than the pictures would have you believe. However if you're picking smog stations on visual appeal then really you probably haven't lived in California long or owned many cars. Besides, I thought it looked like the gas station from Fallout 4. The staff is incredibly friendly, they have a genuine affection for cars, and the pricing is straightforward and clear because it's on a giant poster to the left of the register. They take your info, they state the price, you hand over your keys and 15 minutes after they start you get your car back and a certificate. This is a very painless experience. It is first come first serve so leaving work a little early on a weekday can pay huge dividends if you want to walk in and walk out with no more wait than the time the smog takes. There's magazines but no TV, coffee, water etc... good phone signal though so all set. read more

Don't judge a book by it's cover. Despite the facility looking a little run down the person who helped me was courteous and professional and explained everything very clearly. In this day and age it's surprisingly hard to come by "people skills" like this in the automotive repair business in general. Read every word on their very educational website you will be well prepared for what might happen if your vehicle has had recent work done. They spell out everything you should do to help your vehicle pass smog. If you don't and it fails then you've got no one to blame but yourself. Despite the head gasket and 12volt battery being recently replaced and the computer consequently reset my wife's Prius passed its "Star"mandated smog test AND they were able to process the registration and issue me the tag. All in less than 30 minutes without an appointment. I'll recommend these guys to anyone. read more

My wait was mostly due to a customer, just before my vehicle, who needed to do something simple, drive about 60 miles to reset a code, return to retest same day at no charge....they were extremely patient & kind repeating the machine is the only way you pass or fail, not anything the tester does. I came in to get my car smog 12 minutes before they closed since I called the day prior and the female receptionist informed me that the smog should only take 10 minutes. I get off of work at 5:30 every day so I thought I could make it with the little time I had. The person on the phone was incredibly nice and helpful however when I came in the Australian man came out pacing back-and-forth making me incredibly uneasy. He then decided to yell at me saying "You know we close in 12 minutes!!?" to which I responded apologetically "I know I'm sorry I was really hoping to get my car smog today" and instead of kindly saying I'm sorry we don't have any more availability which I would have completely understood and probably would have tried again the next day IF he expressed it nicely, but no. In a rude and yelling manner he said "fo you even have your paperwork?! GO GRAB IY FROM YOUR CAR!!" as if I was his little kid that did something incredibly wrong. It felt VERY demeaning. I stood there flabbergasted for a moment that he was reacting this way for no cause since I came at him with kindness until I decided to not be harassed by him anymore and said "You know what with your attitude, Im good" I work in customer service and I can say that he was the worst person I have ever dealt with! This was a frustrating visit from start to the $90 payment many hours later. I called and the nice reception lady said they were not busy at all. I was surprised by this since it was a Saturday, and most other stations were closed. What could go wrong? The first clue was a full stuffy waiting room, many cars in a que and one technician. The reception lady said it would be 50 min. This seemed unlikely, so I checked with the tech and he scoffed, and said it would be at least one and 1/2 hours. I walked in the rain and cold of the first winter storm, and returned promptly. My car had not moved at all. The second reception person seemed used to stretching truth. Yes, your car will be next, I was told. Going back into the warm stuffy waiting room another customer was told his car was next. The customers sat in sullen silence, quiet as sheep. I decided to break the ice, and asked how long people had been waiting. Everyone had been there at least two hours and one guy who remarked ("I really had things to do today") said his wait was already over three hours. As punishment for my comments, the ruthless receptionist informed me that her original estimate for my smog test was too low, and the price was increasing. I protested, informed my comrade fellow sheep that it was time to get an electric car, and left. I was called later, told the gas car had passed, and informed I should not be late picking it up after payment. Go somewhere else! read more

I've taken both my truck and my car to ASTO over the past few years. They're fast, organized, well-priced, and they're nice folks. Nice counts for a lot with me. Plus, they have good magazines in their waiting area. (It's the little things.) My routine has always been to arrive at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. Recently, I didn't get in until about 8:15 and there were several vehicles ahead of me. Even so, my Tacoma and I were out of there much sooner than I had feared. I ended up typing in the wrong address and arrived shortly after 5. They let me know they already had two people ahead of me so they wouldn't be able to take me - totally understandable.
