Well after letting one of my cars sit for a year with a dead battery, I finally put in a new battery and then needed to get the car smog (yup, the registration came up and it required a smog). I called my usual place which is opened on Saturdays (more convenient for me so I don't have to take time off from work) and spoke to the person who answered the phone and asked to make an appointment. Well I was surprised that it wasn't the place I called but another shop as my usual spot forward their phone to another business due to a fire they had. This person said I could take it to them or take it to Super Sonic Smog but neither took appointments and were only opened Monday through Friday. I thought about it and went to Super Sonic Smog the next morning shortly after they opened and there was a line of cars as well as the cars they were working on. I happened to see Joe who does some of the smogs and asked how long he thought it would be and he said at least an hour. Well I couldn't wait that long as I had to get back to work so he said to come by around 4:15pm that same day. So I went to work and asked my boss if I could leave at 4pm to get the car smogged and he was fine with it. I left and got there about 4:10pm, and then waited. Randy ended up working on my car and I ended up waiting longer than normal smog should take due to the fact that the vehicle before my car had some issues so it took longer. Pricing was very reasonable and they do charge a convenience fee for using a credit card, though I didn't know it until I saw my receipt as there was no signage in the business stating that they charged a fee. Services was great and I will definitely take my other car here when it's time for a smog. read more

Marc in the office is hilarious. I'm dying laughing at people complaining about him. We had the best time. Looks like other people don't get our sarcastic sense of humor lol. My smog took less than 15 minutes?! Crazy. Think the owner greeted me when I first got there, what a gem. Next time the DMV slaps another smog requirement on me I'll be back. Horrible experience. Would not recommend there are way to many smog shops around to waste your time here, and many for less than $70. Place was a mess and employees were rude. I arrived and asked the guy testing the cars if he had time as I was on m lunch and would need it to be under an hour, he said "no problem I'll get you out in 30 min, working on one and one in front of you." Perfect. I go into the office to check it in and saw the $70, pretty high for a smog, but no biggie. The guy in the office had the personality of a phone book, and couldn't get him to say much. Also no biggie, but a little customer "service" would have been nice. I sit outside, and he finishes the two vehicles in front of me which took most of the 30 minutes. No biggie I can be a couple minutes late. Here's the point where it was no longer no biggie. He has NO cars on the machine, mine is right there ready to be put on, and he proceeds to start talking to a guy in a classic car who puled up. They're chatting and the guy gets out of his car and they open the hood and they're checking out the engine and continue to walk around the car checking it out. My car could have been on the machine and almost done by now. The office guy is now out there smoking a cigarette, and I made it clear I was aware my car hadn't even been started. The guy just continues smoking like I am not even there. At this point I am pretty agitated and ask the office guy for my DMV paperwork back. I figure he may nudge the test guy and remind him I am waiting. He does not. Instead he goes back and grabs it without a word to me or the guy. I proceed to start my car and go and the test guy doesn't even acknowledge me. Wasted my hour, no smog check. May have been an off day for them based on reviews but it was all pretty unacceptable way to run a business. Save yourself a little money and take your car to one of the 20 other test stations in Petaluma where businesses may actually be happy to serve you. read more

I've had multiple good experiences getting cars/RV smogged at Super Sonic Smog. It's one of those few old-school places left in SonoCo where you are treated more like a neighbor than a stranger by the ol' timers that run the place. They have been extremely helpful and transparent, particularly when I've had issues with the RV that made the smog process more difficult. Recommend these guys, but one must realize there's primarily one mechanic, so be respectful and prepared to wait, just like you would have to do anywhere else without an appointment. read more

The gentleman who did the actual smog inspection was top notch. The guy working the computer and taken the money was too bothered by humans to even acknowledge you with a simple hello or any other words. They don't do appointments but usually take you in right away. I used them twice and plan on continuing to do so. It is a convenient smog place close to down town. They are fairly thorough and explain if they have any concerns about your vehicle. A special shout out to Joe Sullivan who is a kind and an honest mechanic there who does his best to ensure that everything runs smoothly for you when you bring your car in. I was referred here to get my car smogged because they are STAR Smog Certified. No frills and no 'up selling' just straight service. They conveniently send results to DMV for your registration! Fair price, fast and efficient. The bistro set outside was a nice place to enjoy the sunshine while I waited. Good job guys! read more

Update, August 2022: I was lucky enough to find a coupon for them to get my car smog-checked for just $50 again, so I went back. I arrived 5-6 minutes before they were technically supposed to open, but the office guy still brought me right in; he didn't seem unfriendly or inconvenienced, just like the kind of taciturn person who probably isn't a fan of making small talk. These guys are great. We have two older vehicles and a few years back, the state made getting these older vehicles smogged a lot more difficult than had previously been the case. Different equipment and protocols were put in place for pre-2000 year cars and I guess not every smog shop thought it was worthwhile to invest in the equipment needed to test these older cars. One previous smog shop started requiring appointments (not necessarily a bad thing), but blocked out an hour and a half for the procedure (previously ten to twenty minutes would suffice). Another place we used kept having equipment breakdowns and calibration issues so they recommended Super Sonic to us. These guys are strictly first come, first serve so you may have a wait if you get there at the wrong time, but we got lucky and they took us right in. 15 minutes later we we're on our way. Randy, Mark, and Joe have each helped me for issues with various family cars. I have taken five different cars there for their smog check and I would not go anywhere else. Several times I was able to save money by taking my car there instead of the dealership (Toyotas all). Things such as tire pressure light, battery replacement, leak repair, and even a stuck sunglasses visor. Ask about the different services they offer. I saw where there were some bad reviews but decided to go here because of recommendations from my normal mechanic. As reported the guy at the front desk was not the most talkative person you ever met....I might be that way too if I had to deal with some of the public that walks thru the door. It turns out there are not many places in Petaluma than can inspect 1999 and earlier cars.. the older cars don't have all the sensors that have been added in newer cars, so the testing procedure takes longer with a special piece of equipment. And it also turns out that multiple shops refer people here. Based on the work that Randy (the technician) did I would have come here even if there were other choices. Even though he was busy he was willing to explain the testing procedure and how/why older cars are more complicated. Highly recommended read more

They don't take appointments so walk-in only. My usual place wasn't doing the tests and they recommended Super Sonic Smog. Read reviews in here so went for it. I called and got the guy who has been mentioned in other reviews. Oh, yeah. He's the same in person and I'm okay with that. He does his job efficiently and I don't need my hand held through the process. Really, I'm getting a smog test done. While you wait they have seating in different areas: chairs in the office, old vehicle bench seat and folding chairs in the garage bay, and out in the lot an outdoor table and chairs. You'll see how busy they are and watch traffic on Lakeville and Hopper. I saw a few Clover Milk trucks with logos that were new to me. The mechanic was friendly and it can be jarring after the counter guy. I liked them both and will be back in the future for any smog needs. If you want the real deal this is the place. Highly recommend for price, service, and the experience. Five out of five -easily. Be alert when you drive down Hopper from Caulfield. Wide trucks in a hurry, pedestrians, cyclists, and all kinds of everything else are in abundance. read more

He deserves it and it made me feel good to hear he had a bad experience at this shop after I warned him not to go there because the guy who runs it is a cranky old jerk. That being said, it must be nice to be able to run a place and be pretty much straight up rude to whoever you want, whenever you want. I would not recommend this place to anyone who wants to be treated respectfully. Went here the first time because I did an interview for the Press Democrat with OG, sign spinner extraordinaire. Thought so highly of him I wanted to patronize the shop and went back because I liked Mark, the counter guy, and Randy, the smog check expert. Prices are reasonable and they're honest. Plus, Mark's a great joker. Several reviewers have called him "rude," but he's just having fun when he dishes out lines like, "We don't do smog any more; now we're into garlic lemonade," or quotes crazy wrong prices, "That'll be $60,000." I'm leaving One star because there is no option for Zero stars. Arrived at 10am right when they opened and was quoted 45 minutes for a smog. Mr. Grumpy Camo behind the desk smells like booze and is incredibly confrontational from the beginning. I watched my car sit in the same spot I parked it in for almost an hour before I got up to say something. Grumpy was watching King of The Hill in his office (ironic) and then told his mechanic to check My car. Mechanic is wearing no mask and has oil all over his hands when he gets into my car. It takes them less than 5 minutes to smog my car once he got started. I didn't leave until 11:45. They were incredibly rude and almost hostile with every minimal interaction we had. All 3 employees honestly made me feel very uncomfortable and almost unsafe being a person of color. The most important thing with a smog shop is getting a honest shop! They can fail you for the most ridiculous technicalities and turn your life into a living hell with a huge bill over a stupid nothing! I have had it happen to me and my friends and I know way too much about cars even! These guys are honest and help you out! Where most shops just try and make more money off you. These guys will steer you in the right direction to try and save you money! Which is rare in this day and age! I like to read bad reviews before I write mine to see if I missed anything: Does the cashier lack people skills and is not going to win any congeniality awards YES but what do I care as long as the bill is RIGHT! Punctuality is not great but from what i can tell the same guy doing your smog is the only guy doing your smog every time and I think the owner. So yeah life is going to happen but maybe thats why there prices are so good??????Less employees less overhead, cheap cashier! lol I asked about appointments and the smog guy said they booked a full day once and turned away all walk in's and only one appointment showed up and they pissed off everyone who walked in that saw them standing around waiting for the appointments.
