Unfortunately, after trying these tailors with a few items of clothing, I cannot recommend them. I asked for a dress hem to be fixed because it was unraveling, and pants to be hemmed. It look a long time, and both were simple jobs I could have done. The dress dem was returned not fixed, and the pants were not hemmed short enough to be the length I requested when I was measured. Do not trust your clothing with this shop! I had the worst experience today. Dress was to be hemmed 3/4 inch straight hem. I picked it up today and it is extremely uneven- at least an inch shorter in the front than the back. I calmly asked if we could look at the dress together and the lady began denying before I could even got the dress off the hanger. She started yelling at me and yelling at another employee that tried to help. The work is so obviously wrong and she refused to acknowledge the issue. I asked if there was a manager or owner I could speak with to have a look at the dress and she refused to give me any information. Unfortunately, this is not the place for expensive dresses or special occasions (see photos). I will say- the ladies are nice and did complete this projection within a short time (1.5 week). Other than that, I don't have anything good to say. I brought in two dresses for my wedding- the rehearsal and the reception. I spent over $500 getting them altered. They are completely ruined. I don't even have photos of the second dress because I was so disheartened I threw it in the back of my closet. The second dress I tried to make the best. After giving them an extra day and weekend, it was still awful. The seams are completely crooked. They weren't pressed and bubbled. They weren't even aligned on the interior so they stuck out. And both dresses had a new STAIN on them I tried to steam out. I ended up sending a friend back to the house half way through the rehearsal because the dress kept falling off me. I loved this dress so much and it was so heart broken how brutalized it was. Threw it in the trash after this weekends event. Find else where. read more

Really disappointing experience. The women were rude and condescending, had inaccurate times posted on their website and door that led to me coming to pick up a dress and no one being there despite the door sign saying they should still be open, and did not fix a broken clasp that was part of what we had discussed and on the receipt as being fixed. Rude staff make for an extremely unpleasant experience. I drove an hour to pick up my wedding dress and was running late due to a car accident that was holding up traffic. I called to tell them I'd be there in 20 minutes as a courtesy. First, they had no idea who I was or that I had a 4:30 appointment. Then, they told me to reschedule. It was the week before my wedding and I'd already driven an hour to get there. They didn't care that I was only going to be 20 minutes late, they closed at 5 and it was too bad. I have been using A Stitch Witch for alterations since 2014 (over 4 years). They have altered everything from a fleece jacket to jeans, to many dresses. Their staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They have been honest with me when I have brought in garments that they felt already fit as intended. A Stitch Witch is known for altering wedding dresses. However, they have altered many work clothes and casual clothes for me. I recently ordered the smallest size possible of a wool peacoat on line. It was several sizes too large. The seamstress I worked with was able to alter the garment so it fit perfectly. (She felt that the size "2" I was sold was really closer to a 12, but she made it work). The weather literally just started turning in Charleston, and she was able to get the alteration in in less than a week's time so that I would have the coat ready when the AM temps started dropping. I trust all of my alterations in the hands of A Stitch Witch - so much that I drive from the N. end of Mt. Pleasant all the way to West Ashley to work with them. I started using A Stitch Witch in 2005 with my high school baseball umpire uniforms. They did all of the sewing of patches, alterations of pants and jackets. Although I no longer umpire, I now take my favorite jeans that I refuse to give up, to have mended. I have never once had to take anything back due to unsatisfactory workmanship. Alterations were a week and a half late, staff is RUDE and argumentative in each and every interaction -- not to mention they LOST part of my wedding gown the week of my wedding. Yes, LOST it. Argued with me for 5 minutes about it, refused to look for it and told me that they "took no responsibility". A $45 bustle is now costing hundreds in replacement. Brides...I DO NOT recommend. This was a terrible experience. They hemmed 2 dresses for me and the hem lasted less than 4 months in BOTH dresses. I went back to ask if they would correct their mistakes and was yelled at by the "boss" (she had super short grey hair and when I asked what her name was she wouldn't tell me ). She said that they need to make money, they are a business, and can't fix them for "free". I explained I already paid for a service that didn't last. I also asked how long they stood by their work. She said 24 hours... that's laughable! She had a finger in my face and was yelling at me by the end of the conversation. I've never been treated this way! I was very disappointed with A Stitch Witch. I ordered my wedding gown at home in CT and had it shipped to my house in Charleston. Many people recommended this seamstress, but I wasn't very satisfied. First, a few days before my bridal portrait shoot, my gown was supposed to be ready to go. When I arrived to pick it up, there were several things that had not been done (the sash that I left with them was supposed to be tacked onto the dress and my 'something blue' was also supposed to have been stitched onto the tulle lining of the skirt) and neither had been done. After two fittings, they also still had to take it in a bit on top (I had not lost or gained any weight at this point) and I had to sit and wait for them to complete everything while listening to the women in the shop bitch about each other. On my wedding day, I came to find that the dress was still a little too long and even though I wore the same shoes from when I had it fitted, I was still tripping over my dress all night. Lastly, the bustle was not done well at all. Several of the ties ripped out of the underside of the skirt from me stepping on it due to it being too long and it was uneven. One side looked great while the other side did not. It was also very low and made the back of the dress look unflattering. I wish I had have had more time to bring it back to have it fixed. I paid well over $400 and the job was not worth it. In the end, it was all minimal and by no means did it ruin my day, however, I would just not recommend this tailor. read more

My entire experience here ended with me being screamed at to the point I was in tears, then I was followed into the dressing room so I couldn't even get my wedding dress off to change and leave. After paying once for my alterations, my mom was tricked and charged again for "additional work" that had not been done when she picked up my dress for portraits. I strongly discourage people from doing business with Stitch Witch. They were rude and messed up three dresses for my family. I wish we would have read these reviews before doing business with them, but we trusted the bridal shop that sent us there. It is noteworthy that the bridal shop has now fired Stitch Witch. After several months they still didn't have my daughter's wedding dress right. A former employee of Stitch Witch was used and she finally got the dress right. It was very stressful for my daughter and resulted in lots of last minute work. My other daughter was the maid of honor. Stitch Witch did a lousy job on her dress (it is crooked) and tried to charge extra because they supposedly misquoted it originally. We had to buy a new one at the last minute. We shouldn't have offered to pay anything, but to be gracious we agreed to split the difference. After that I think they messed up the dress on purpose or just quit working on them. They didn't complete my wife's dress. She also had to buy another one at the last minute. Very stressful, and expensive. Throughout the entire wedding process they were the worst vendor we dealt with, by far. They caused an enormous amount of unnecessary stress and wasted time and ruined one dress. I encourage you to start early with your alterations, and to go somewhere else. read more

If you like pushy old women who know how to hem cheap wedding dresses, this is your place. If you don't have a David's Bridal dress, appreciate a clean facility and polite, encouraging seamstresses then this is NOT the place for you. There's nothing wrong with David's Bridal dresses but let's be serious, they more inexpensive for a reason. They're simpler and have cheaper fabrics than higher end boutiques. No getting around that. First thing was the terrible phone service. The lady was rude, pushy and impatient on the phone when I called to check that my appointment was still on for that weekend. Kept talking over me and then shouting at me when I waited too long for her to finish. When I showed up the day of my fitting, the place was a mess. Hair and dirt all over the floor where my dress would be touching. No chairs for a wedding party to view the fitting either. I put on my dress and was apparently competing for attention with the bride next to me. I'm no bridezilla, so I don't mind my seamstress complementing another bride but when she's so busy talking to the other seamstress and eavesdropping in that brides conversation I have a problem. What little attention she did pay my was to give me meaningless and shallow praise and then push me to have my dress hemmed how she wished. Now we get to the bustle. My dress has a small train and she recommended bustling it. I asked her to show me and she started pinning my dress in the most unflattering and incompetent manner. It looked terrible but she "assured" me that it would turn out all right. After having no confidence in her, I left it to only be taken in. I am currently searching for somewhere else to take me dress. In summary, if you're dress is more expensive than you're average David's Bridal dress, take it elsewhere! Somewhere more expensive, it will be worth the cost! This was the most unspecial part of my wedding preparation so far. Don't make the same cheap mistake I made. read more

I've previously had good work from this company but I'm not sure what happened. They were giving my bridesmaids dress to take up and in a little, maybe half a size. When I got there to pick it up Wednesday it was entirely to small and too short. Not a big deal if it wasn't 3 days before my sisters wedding and I had time to come back but when I asked if it would be ready by Saturday I was informed it was Wednesday by one of the seamstresses. Obviously I knew what day it was, and I don't appreciate the attitude I got when my dress was upwards of 300 and they charged me 120 for alterations. I go pick up the dress the next day and it fits ok, not exactly what I wanted but whatever. Today is wedding day and I put my dress on and the sleeve is literally coming undone!! So now I have to fix this dress myself after paying them to do it, making it too small, and then returned it to me with the sleeve not secure. Great business. They also messed up another bridesmaids dress and the mother of the brides dress to the point that she went and bought another dress to wear yesterday. I'm so disappointed because I had high expectations from this company and I got to pay for them to mess up my 300$ dress and I got attitude! I phoned them today for some advice on hemming a bridesmaid dress that I was having difficulty with. I unwisely volunteered to hem a dress for someone and I waited until the day before to begin the project. I had no experience sewing on Jersey fabric and I was having difficulty with the project. It was an emergency call and while they were unable to hem the dress for me as it was VERY last minute, they did give me very helpful advice regarding the type of needle and tension adjustment I should use for the jersey fabric of the dress. I followed their advice and was able to successfully hem the dress. I have the highest regards for them and I will definitely use them in the future for my alteration needs. read more

I brought two Tommy Bahama dresses that had halter style (tie behind the neck) straps to A Stitch Witch to alter into normal over the shoulder straps. This should have been a fairly simple job. Julia measured me and was ripping out the seams to the straps while the dress was on me which was concerning but I didn't say anything. She pinned the straps and off I went. When I went back to pick up (after paying $35 per dress in advance) the straps were so tight I couldn't even pull over my shoulders!! She huffed and puffed and said she would fix but the problem was, there was not enough material left to lengthen enough to fit. Not only that, the stitch work was horrendous! The lines were all uneven on the outside of the dress and even some she never finished stitching! The inside was all ripped apart from where she removed the original strap and the material was frayed in some locations. She insisted she could fix but would not tell me how so I left and told her to keep the dresses. As I came to my senses, I called and demanded a refund which they provided, and I also asked the owner Roberta to call me after she looked at the poor quality work. Of course I called several times and she would not call me back so today I decided to go in person. Julia was incredibly rude to me but she did hand me one of the dresses and said she fixed it. Well, as I suspected, there was not enough material left but this time I could at least pull my arms through but the dress was up under my arm pits! I asked for Roberta and Julia points to her but she wouldn't look up. So I called her name a few times until she looked up and finally came over only to ask me what my problem was with the most disgusting look. I was terribly uncomfortable and asked her why she was looking at me in such a way. She didn't answer, but said they would fix the dresses. So again, I asked how and she wouldn't answer but walked away. I told her I would just sit and wait until she had time to talk to me. So sit I did, for about 10 minutes. I also took some pictures of the work which I wish I could post here because if you are reading this, you'd NEVER bring anything to them. Finally Julia came over with some different straps and suggested we just change them all together. I humored her and went into the dressing room and let her pin the new straps on. She told me I'd have to pay for them when I pick them up! Imagine only caring about me paying for this work at this point? Not sure how they've managed to stay in business but maybe they have limited skills and the other work they do is easy and maybe they don't work on higher end things like Tommy Bahama? Not sure but I'm writing this to help anyone else who may trust their fine clothing to them... I lost two beautiful dresses $99 each and I'm very very upset about this. read more

They are not just rude and overly confident in the minuscule abilities that they have... it's much, much worse than that. They are confusingly incompetent. NEVER EVER EVER GOING BACK. I have been going to A Stitch Witch for over 6 years. I've taken my wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, and multiple other dresses to them for alterations. I even recently sent my husband there to have his suits tailored. Yes, they are blunt and have attitudes but I've never had a problem before. They really outdid themselves, though. They have a new seamstress there, that I've never worked with. She altered a bridesmaid dress for me to include hemming it, altering the straps, and taking in the sides (which she claims she didn't do). The dress was loose fitting on the sides when I originally brought the dress in. After they finished with it, I picked it up, took it home, and the zipper wouldn't close. I tried everything to get it to zip. I brought the dress in the next morning to have them fix it, and they berated me and told me it wasn't their doing. After I explained the dress fit and zipped prior to their alterations, they asked me "Are you on your period?" Up until that point I'd remained calm, but when they tried to deflect blame and put off my exasperation on PMS. That crossed the line. They finally agreed to fix it, after telling me it would be an additional charge. An additional $45 charge after I'd already paid $75. On a side note, my husband picked up his suits and they look awful. He paid $178 for the alterations. Should've just bought a new suit. -_- read more

Five stars all the way. From going up and down in sizes and from couture to vintage and discount racks I always depended on a top seamstress in NYC for alterations. I have lived in Charleston for eight years and have had no good experiences and some terrible ones until I found A Stitch Witch last week. My $800 Misook cardigan looked sloppy as it was oversized in places and the hook closures weren't done properly. I Emailed on Sunday and they replied the same day and invited me to come in and show them the piece and see what they can do. My alterations were handled by a true professional who removed sleeves and seams and used taping to secure the stitching - couture all the way - and they were friendly and fast knowing I had a deadline. I will be coming back with other pieces and highly recommend. $50 was very fair for the work involved. Thank you ladies!!! I noticed lots of couture hanging in the shop so I think there are many other ladies in town who love the work here. Very very pleased! read more

Trust all of the negative reviews! They are ALL correct. Unfortunately I did not see them until the day before I was to go try on my wedding dress. I tried to go in optimistic, but left very disappointed. They sent me into a room with no mirror and an old rolling chair to try my dress on. I immediately realized the straps were attached incorrectly. They then proceeded to argue with me about how the straps were supposed to be. I was told to take the dress off and get changed. They attempted to fix the straps but never gave me the chance to try it back on or show me the bustle. I have since tried the dress back on at the bridal salon and the straps were reattached incorrectly, the bustle looked TERRIBLE, and it was too loose. I am now working with a new seamstress to fix all of the mistakes made at A Stitch Witch. Whatever you do do not let them touch your wedding dress! read more

I would never recommend this place for wedding alterations. My dress was brought in too much which caused a roll in my dress right at my stomach. My dress fit better before I brought it in. Then I was told I could pay more to have it fixed. Ended up paying close to $400 and my dress never fit properly. The worse part was that the back clasp was broken and the dress kept unzipping all night. I was so uncomfortable I had to buy a ugly cover up to hide the fact that my dress wouldn't stay closed. I can't believe this shop continues to stay in business. My daughter bought a wedding gown at Jodi's Bridal in No. Charleston off the rack which needed to be altered. Stitch Witch is their in-house alteration service so it was assumed that we could get better service and pricing. Right from the start we interfaced with an older, gray haired woman that had a bad attitude at each and every appointment, both at the bridal shop and at her own store. We all have a bad day now and then but when you have a set appointment time and you are greeted with a scowl and "What are you doing here? I don't have any dress ready for you." that is not a positive for business. Only after paying extra money was the dress finished dangerously close to the wedding date. The workmanship was shoddy and overpriced. If you have alterations to be done of any kind I would strongly advise going anywhere else. read more

Do not waste your time or money at stich witch. Spoke to the OWNER today who was extremely rude. I stated to her that my dress was taken in too much on the sides, the dress was taken up in length correctly, and cups were added to the dress. I asked that my money be refunded for the alterations done to the sides only-since I am now paying someone to fix this before my sister's wedding this Saturday. It took two of them to get me zipped up in the dress and once on could hardly breathe. I was told it would stretch out. I have since tried the dress on multiple times to see if this was true and even sat down a few times. The dress is extremely tight can and I can not breathe while wearing this. While having this conversation with the owner this afternoon, I mentation I wish I would have read the reviews before bringing my dress here, in returned she stated these reviews where bullsh*t. Despite hearing terrible reviews about Roberta from multiple friends, I went with the advice of my (very reputable) boutique where I purchased my gown, as they insisted that she was the best and the sole person they trusted with their custom gowns. I was traveling from Charlotte for alterations and didn't want to be a headache for the boutique, so reluctantly agreed to let Roberta alter my gown. Now there were MINIMAL alterations that needed to be done with my gown. It only needed to be bustled, taken in at the bust, and add bust cups. After getting fitted, I received a frantic phone call from yet another friend who warned me not to let Roberta TOUCH my gown. Unfortunately, the dress had already been altered. I picked the dress up and immediately brought it to another woman who specializes in couture gowns. When I tried the dress on I found that it was hardly taken in at all. The bust was a good 1/2 inch away from my body and was not fitted at all. And this was only 3 weeks before my wedding. Luckily, it was able to be taken in more by the better alterations lady, but it was certainly a huge expense and huge headache that no bride should have to deal with. Roberta would not refund me for the poor quality work and was very rude when I told her I wanted the gown to be altered by someone else. Save yourself the trouble and heartache. The experience with Stitch Witch seems to vary widely depending on who you work with. I purchased my wedding dress from Bridals by Jodi in North Charleston and they referred me to Stitch Witch to make the alterations to my dress. Since we were already working with them, we decided to also take my sister's bridesmaid dress to them. For my dress, I worked primarily with Mary and had a great experience. She did an awesome transformation of the top of my dress and I always felt that she was taking my questions and concerns seriously. My sister, on the other hand, was primarily working with one of the other women at Stitch Witch and had a terrible experience with her. My sister brought in a dress that fit well but wanted the neckline changed from a high round neck to a scoop neck. During the initial fitting, my sister told her seamstress that the pins seemed to be placed too widely and she didn't want the neck that wide, but the woman brushed aside her concerns and just told us that she knew what she was doing. When we returned for the next fitting, the neck was too wide, to the extent that it was sagging on my sister's shoulders and Stitch Witch charged more to fix the shoulders of the dress. After this was fixed, we took the dress home, where my mother had to make further alterations because the neck was noticeably uneven with one side higher than the other. On the occasions when this seamstress was present for my fittings, she would talk over me any time I tried to point out something I wanted to change in my dress and when I asked my family for opinions, she would jump in and loudly say that it looked perfect and nothing else needed to be changed before my family could say anything. read more

If the Roberta works here that altered my wedding dress, STAY AWAY! The lady that usually alters wedding dresses at the boutique I got my dress at was out of town. Roberta took two months to alter my dress, and did not even alter the bust (which was my main concern)! Told me the I could not change things on my dress (which another lady at another place did and it looked great)! She was VERY rude and had me in tears because she could not fix my dress before my bridals. She said "Just tie your sash tight and you will not be able to tell in pictures that the bust to too big". If I am paying thousands of dollars for a dress and paying you hundreds to alter, it better fit like a glove. She had no sympathy that my dress what not going to look perfect on me! The lady at the boutique ended up getting another lady to "FIX" my dress, and it was harder for her because she had to redo Roberta's mistakes. At the end my dress ended up fitting me perfect for bridals and my wedding day, but I could have not went through the hassle of Roberta. Brides are already stressed enough. read more
