I had a very disappointing experience with this shop. I brought my car in because of a check engine light related to the EVAP system. After inspecting the car, they told me the issue was the fuel filler neck and quoted me about $746 for the repair, even though the part itself costs around $150. The price seemed extremely high for such a repair. What made the situation even worse is that after waiting about a week, the problem still appeared again from the same area. Instead of helping or rechecking the issue properly, they continued to ask for more money. As a customer, this feels very frustrating. A repair that costs a small amount for the part should not suddenly turn into such an expensive job, especially when the problem still isn't fully resolved. I have reluctantly taken my car in to other places only to get a bad vibe, like they just wanted my money and just didn't take the time to help explain things to me. This place is really great! I contacted this shop after reaching out to about 7 other repair shops. I spoke with Shaun about our family car's air conditioner that went out. Their initial quote ran just above 5 of the other shops but way below one shop we went to which was close by. We decided to take it here for location purposes -but when we took it the day after speaking to them and once they seen the other places quote the price went way up. Definitely not worth that extra high cost for location sake. I did receive a text message saying they were not clear on what we needed over the phone and that's why the big increase. I've been taking my car here since I moved to the area in 2018, and I've always received incredible service. They do a fantastic job on routine maintenance, as well as more specialized services. I'm very clueless about cars, and just trying to keep my 2003 Toyota Corolla running for as long as it will realistically go. I'm so grateful that this shop is nearby and provides such great car repairs and service. I have a couple of incidents that really stand out to me, and I'll write about them below. First, I had an incident where one of my tires was flat, and they repaired it quickly for no cost. I had bought the tire from them, and the way it had become flat was driving over a screw, so nothing related to their quality. It means a lot that they go the distance like that. Second: I had a repair that ended up causing another problem with my car. They completely owned up to it, and have provided all service free of charge to repair the car. I wish I knew more about cars so I could more precisely describe all the ways that they're a fantastic shop! As a driver of car with 200K+ miles on it, I'm so glad that they're around to help me with service and repairs. They're honest, straight-forward, provide great service, and help this driver who doesn't know much beyond gas filling and tire inflation. I am a car aficionado who studies the wide array of cars. I have a 20 year of BMW that was acting strange - no acceleration at random times making it dangerous. Took my care to the dealer because I just had a major tune up and my mechanic could not figure out the problem. The dealer did a superficial diagnostic search at a cost of $245.00. They're suggestion was to do a transmission tune up to the cost of $3000, where it ordinarily costs from $1000 to $1500. The confusing piece was that the electronic surveillance was not picking up the problem. This was after the dealer put a dent in my care doing the diagnostics and then took over a week to fix it with no offer of a loner! Had Shaun at A Street Auto Service on State Street downtown look at it. Shaun agreed to have the care driven until such time that the acceleration problem revealed itself. The care needed from 5-10 miles before acting up. I don't know too many repair shops that would have done so. They discovered an alternator gone bad in unison with brakes and tail light. The electronics here are so buried in the car because most people trade in their old bow's before this problem has a chance to materialize so no electronic alert. They found a very economical repair in place of a transmission rebuild. I can't tell you how customer service oriented they were and just full of integrity in their job done for me. INCREDIBLE auto service experience this weekend ! My moms old trusty 95 Camry had its habitual oil leak return and my normal mechanic booked 2 weeks out. By YELP I found this GEM of an auto service professional only 3 blocks from my condo ! As other Yelpers rave about, SCOTT an abbsolutely amazing, honest, competent proprietor! I was driving through downtown SD when my car suddenly began to have trouble running. My check engine light started flashing and the car felt like it was going to shut off. I quickly pulled up the nearest mechanic on my phone and found Griffin's Auto repair (off State Street). I told the gentleman working the front what the issue was, and he took my information and quickly drafted a print for me to sign for a $150 diagnostic test. I almost blindly signed the documented but I noticed the fee and asked him if there was anyway we could negotiate that number. I explained my financial situation after moving expenses and being unemployed. He said no and I (embarrassed) asked if he knew of a place that might be more affordable. The man sitting next to him replied "yes, but they won't be as good. We're certified and recognized for our quality work, you get what you pay for." It made me feel super small and helpless. I kindly thanked them and said I was going to explore my options. The next place I called is three blocks south of Griffin's. A gentleman answered the phone, and as I explained my current situation (including the experience I just had at Griffins) he instantly showed an abundance amount of concern for my vehicle and my well being (so much that he brought me to tears). He asked me to try and get my car over to his shop, and not to worry about the rest. He said he'd take a look at it and charge me by the time spent diagnosing it rather than a flat fee (which he stated would be much less for this matter). The lot was full, garages were full, everyone was busy working; they were scheduling appointments and still took the time to find a way and get me in. On my follow up visit, Scott and his son popped the hood and showed me what the problem was. They gave me an elaborate explanation and presentation of the damage and walked me through the solution. He also noticed a few other things that needed maintenance and worked with my budget to prioritize the necessary work. I picked up my vehicle and paid an amazing price for quality work from honest men. They might not have the prettiest looking shop or fancy uniforms, but they have real genuine class, the ability to speak in a non-transactional manner, and heart. I was able to schedule an appointment for an oil change for Saturday morning at 1030AM. These guys are really fast and per our request also performed a complete diagnostic. Besides the oil change, the battery was also replaced for a grand total of ~$200. This seemed valid as the battery had not been replaced for a few years. I appreciate that these guys were speedy, honest and didn't try to upsell on other services. I recently purchased my first car from a faraway dealership (and made the incredible mistake of not having A Street inspect it before purchase). However, I was lucky enough to go in the following day for a second opinion. I'll add that they were the only mechanic that would take a same-day appointment. Unfortunately, the car had a couple of flaws. Had I not brought the car in to A Street, I would've faced some major problems down the road. The car purchase posed some legality issues and Scott coached me through how to approach it with the dealership. Additionally, he went above and beyond by giving me after-market warranty options, legitimate dealership contacts, and more. The car's exhaust flex piece was cracked (with a hefty $1,800 quote for total parts replacement) but Scott and his team were able to weld together the piece flawlessly so I wouldn't shell out unnecessary cash. I'm only thankful for the stressful situation because Scott and his team backed me up all the way and made the car good as new. I will only be bringing my car to A Street from now on, knowing my vehicle is in good hands. Forever grateful to you guys! P.s. Called A Street Auto and they took their time to explain to me everything that was needed/ not needed/ soon to be needed in near future. I called a very TRUSTED auto shop connection in LA and they confirmed that A Street Auto was telling truths typically not told to customers due to desire for business ($). I consider myself to have high emotional intelligence. I got the feeling that these people here cared for their customers beyond a desire for money. They wanted them to be educated. A few months later (today) I had a major problem with my car. They were able to identify and fix the problem in a timely manner. They were always up front on cost to repair and timing expectations. So I had to get a smog and during the process of getting a smog the smog tester noticed that my splash guard was loose and dragging. I asked if someone could help me screw the shield back in or replace it and Scott the owner helped me out by putting some new screws in. I recently serviced my Audi A5 for some brake pads and rotors, oil change and other small issues. The owner who is a master technician and his very professional staff managed to squeeze me in during a very busy day after I realized a competing business downtown who previously did work on my car, is about to overcharge me and also request additional inspection fees since they couldn't tell me without doing comprehensive tests (I came with the error codes and printouts of what the part in question issue was). Within minutes they told me I most likely have a faulty sensor based on the model and make and that it's not a big deal citing their experience. What is refreshing about the business is that they were very honest with me and straightforward about potential issues and pricing, which was hundreds of dollars less than folks across the street. The owner is also extremely personable and genuinely an awesome guy. He worked on my car with the team way past their official hours and called me when done to pick up knowing I was pressed on time. Not only that, they changed my headlight for me that other folks wanted to charge 90 dollars for since it was hard to dismantle and reach for me on my car model and I didn't have the right tools.
