My 2003 Dodge Intrepid, which I love, had 189,000 Mi on it. It decided to throw a rod through the block and the oil pan on 5 North in Carlsbad - trashing the engine. I had it towed home and parked in front of my house while it took over 3 months to find an engine for it. By chance I asked Brian at Hai's if he did engine replacement work? I was surprised when he said yes! We talked about details, and he gave me a competitive price. He is so knowledgeable and can answer every single question and such a pleasure to work with - that I had the motor shipped to his shop. It took them only 3 days total to put this motor in I couldn't believe it! Brian kept me posted as needed with communication and updates which I really appreciated, and the whole process went super smooth, no surprises. They did such a great job and it was such a good decision... lucky to have a shop nearby and so efficient that they can do a complete motor replacement! I have been coming to Hai's for over 20 years. My husband and I don't know much about cars, and I will tell you this is the best place in San Diego. They have saved me money on numerous occasions. I recently had a starter replaced in my Lexus called two other places to get a quote because it was a Sunday and Hai's wasn't open. Hai's Auto Repair unfortunately misdiagnosed the issue with my vehicle, costing me $1300. They were adamant that the problem was not a "death wobble" or severe shaking in the suspension/steering column. However, another mechanic immediately recognized it as exactly that and fixed it. Because Hai's Auto Repair insisted on the wrong diagnosis, I ended up paying $1300 unnecessarily. I did return and showed them a video of how the problem had worsened. To their credit, they offered to re-examine the vehicle at no charge. I chose not to let them attempt another repair, which is why I gave them an extra star. Still, it's important to note that they doubled down on the same incorrect diagnosis. read more

Very disappointed in my experience. I brought my car in for a vibrating wheel with high speed driving. They told me I needed a $1200 repair in my suspension system. I've had bigger repairs here before, so I trusted them and agreed to the service. However, after picking up the car, I immediately noticed that the issue persisted. To their credit, they offered to look at the car again. They agreed that the issue was still there but their subsequent repair (tire balancing) *still* didn't fix the issue. Finally, I took the car somewhere else and they diagnosed a simple bent rim. I'm not sure if the issue is inexperienced techs or (more likely) rushed diagnostics/inspections/repairs but I would not recommend this place. I highly recommend this place. They do very good work and charge a fair price. The owner is an awesome lady who has a staff of excellent mechanics. The manager, Brian is also easy to talk to, goes through every detail and always lets the customer know what to expect. I had to bring my car in to have the Radiator Fan replaced. After getting estimates from a few local garages, I remember how Hai's had worked on my previous car and did a top job. Dropped it off at 10am and it was ready by 3pm. I took my old car here quite a few years ago, and was pleasantly surprised that the same value and service was in place when I brought my newest car in for a catalytic converter install. I like that Brian was able to explain everything and even looked into other causes for that "check emissions" light. his analysis matched up with the dealership service dept, but was almost half the price for the same original Honda part and labor. He was also very familiar with the laws around catalytic converter installs. Hai's is the only place that asked me specific questions about my car make, model and year for the catalytic install when others just gave me a lower quote that ended up not being accurate for my car. And yes, I passed my smog test! I usually hate coming to car repair shops because I never know if I'm getting upsold but this place has always been very fair and I've checked against other places for the service I needed. It's a family owned business that's been around quite a while and that's a plus that I get to support something local too. read more

11/10 recommend to go for friendly & reliable service with open communication! My POV I called and talked to someone about my Honda CRV front left light being out. He recommended to bring my car in early so he could diagnose it and fix the problem. I dropped it off the following day around 10 am, and I also mentioned a problem with my trunk not working properly. He called a couple hours later and told me everything that was wrong and he just needed me to verify to order the parts. Around 4:30ish my car was all ready to be picked up! I walked in & I was asked if I had any questions. Lol - I said "I'm just going to assume that everything works?!"... and he was so nice and just kindly recommended me to go check it out (I opened the trunk of my car, no probs & my light was working again)! The owner looks down on you if you're a woman; he asked my friend if she got her information off the internet when she was telling him what she needed done with her car. Tried to overcharge her and lowered it when he was caught in the act. If you do not want to be scammed, avoid this place like the plague. EDIT: This you? since the owner "forgot", here's my receipt! You folks shouldn't be in business if you can't keep up with customer service or making sure your patrons leave SATISFIED. Also, it's extremely pathetic you'd try and gaslight your patrons into thinking they have the wrong place. Next time maybe keep track of who comes in and out of your shop! EDIT: Funny how you said you don't remember having us come in and then shooting out this whole story. Only convenient to remember when you want to? My husband and I took in his car at Hai's auto for a windshield replacement, 90,000 mile inspection, and charcoal cannister. We now prefer this place for any auto issues as they provide great quality service and have good prices. Quotes from other auto shops for similar services were way more expensive and frankly seem like highway robbery for some of the work that needed to be done. Hai's auto deals with you in a straight forward way, no "bs" as my husband says. However, they can get fairly busy and they don't take appointments so I would recommend getting there when they open. There is a lot to do in the area though so it's easy to kill time while waiting for the car to be finished. There are lots of places to eat/shop within walking distance. read more

Holy Moly AVOID this place at ALL COSTS!!! Just had the most traumatic experience of my life. I was threatened, and practically assaulted. *** NOTE the owner responded with nothing but a bunch of spin and lies. Scroll down to other negative reviews of people that have had to sue this shop! I'm filing a full report. This people are SCARY. Don't believe the positive reviews on here!!!! Probably friends of theirs or fake in some. This is the most unstable greasy shop I've ever encountered in 30 plus years of getting car service work. Took my car here to get an estimate to get a head gasket done. Mind you JUST an estimate! No request for work of any kind was requested or authorized. After getting me an estimate this guy quoted me a price that I felt was high. I called around and found price points hundreds cheaper. Further he tried to make me give him a 1,000 dollar deposit. No other shop required that. On top of it all I checked and this shop is ON PROBATION with the Bureau of Automotive Repair for shady business practices!! Look it up!!! We had been negotiating over a time period while I was out of town and he said it was fine to leave the car there while I was figuring it out. Any shop that asks for a 1,000 deposit when they are going to open your engine, that is on probation with BAP and has the reviews below -think twice. They have you then and can say whatever they want. These people are so unstable I feel SO relieved I made the right call. They were just mad I took my business elsewhere. So I went to tow my car out of the shop and I get there and he's acting all shady messing with my engine while it's on the lot. He acted surprised I had arrived so fast. He says he's "jumping my car to move it to the street" which makes no sense because the head gasket is blown (engine should not run) and the tow truck can pick up right from where it is. Then he tried to get aggressive and say to pay him because he did a compression check -which was never discussed (and I think he made up) and I also think he was trying to move my car into a bay and hold it hostage. Then he tried to throw other BS things about storage and got in my face. I told him to stay away from my car and closed the hood while I called the tow truck. He then tried to re open my hood when I walked way aggressively and said he was still going to start it. I had to stand my ground and he got in my face and I thought he was going to hit me. This shop is as shady as they come. The woman kept coming at me filming me and the mechanic guy came out and acted like he was going to attack me while I was standing off property. I am filing a report and hope they get shut down asap. SCARY. I am literally shaking still and traumatized. Be careful and please avoid this shop. I cannot stress enough how unstable they are as people. You've been warned. Don't believe their crazy spin on all their review responses. Check Bureau of Automotive repair website! read more

Great service and very reasonable prices! My front headlight was out, it was an electrical issue and the VW dealership wanted to charge me $475 just to rip off the bumper & said it would take 3-5 days to determine the issue. Whereas I took my car here and they fixed it for $200 and I got it back the same day. My other light was having the same issue. I took it back to this shop. They did a lot of testing and diagnosis and said there's nothing wrong with it, and they didn't charge me. I'm glad there's honest mechanics out there that won't rip you off! My car broke down and stopped running the other night. I had it towed to Hai's the next day in hopes they could get it back up and running. They operate on a first come, first serve basis. I brought it in around 1pm on a Monday and they had it finished by 5pm same day! It was $85 to run a diagnostic, they gave me a call after that was done to let me know what needed to be done and if I wanted to go ahead with the repair. They called me around 4pm letting me know it would be finished that day for pick up. Check in and check out were a quick and easy process. The alternator needed replacement and they thoroughly explained what happened. I asked if they noticed any other issues, they advised there was fluid on the alternator and that I could bring it back after a couple hundred miles to see if that needed to be addressed. I like how they didn't press me to get the possible leak issue fixed right away and advised me to wait it out first. Glad I found an efficient and honest mechanic in the neighborhood! read more
