I apologize for the length and I'm not usually a negative…read morereviewer but... full experience: We recently relocated to Portland from Sacramento, Ca and were so excited to find a passionate group of folks to take care of our three cats and 70lbs dog in-(our)house. We used Tails and Trails 3 times with mixed results. Important to know- you create detailed notes with the owner (Jeff) on how to access your building, routines, where leashes are, etc., etc., when you have your introductory visit. Our instructions ask that the handler only feeds the cats their canned food, nothing else. 1st time, week-long trip (June 2024)- handlers were 2+ hours late regularly. While this wasn't the biggest issue, we don't have a doggie door and that level of lateness pushed the pup's bathroom breaks longer than we're comfortable. But, we liked the service offered and adjusted how often we scheduled handler visits for the second and third visits. 2nd time, 1 week of walks while both of us were gone for longer than 8 hours (September 2024)- Great! Annie (I'm not disclosing employees' full names for their privacy) had no problems and was very helpful. 3rd time, overnight away- 4 visits requested: Sat afternoon and evening; Sun am and afternoon (October 2024)- Day 1- We left the house at 8 am and scheduled feeding/walk visits for about 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Around 1:25 pm, Chloe (office manager) texted me to ask if we had scheduled for 7:00 am that day. When we said we hadn't, a communication between Chloe and a handler led to the 1:00 pm visit being skipped. We talked with Chloe that evening and she said the handler would roll the afternoon and evening visits together, apologized for the miscommunication between herself and the handler, and credited our account for the mistake (all great). The handler arrived around 7:00 pm. They had a difficult time accessing the building so Chloe texted us to say the handler would hang out for a little longer before leaving if they couldn't get access. Once they did get into the building, they couldn't find the food or leash. The access information, food instructions, and where the leashes are were all in the instructions. The handler fed the pets and took the pup for a 15-min potty break. Since we were only gone for a night, we didn't book anyone to stay overnight. We considered cutting the trip short and wish we had. Day 2- Oscar was our handler. We got notifications that both visits were completed and everything seemed to have gone smoothly. When we got home, a glass jar with cat treats had been taken from the closed closet and left open on the counter. When we got home, there were treats all over the counter and SHATTERED GLASS MIXED WITH TREATS all over the floor. All three cats had engorged stomachs. While Chloe apologized and said she'd speak with Oscar the next day, we didn't hear back from Tails and Trails' manager or owner. We'll be anxiously monitoring our furbabies for a few more days.

He was very polite and patient and somehow he got these two guys to comply. I contacted other groomers within the area, but none of those places ever responded back to me through the email, which was very disappointing. But I'm so glad that Woofie came through for us. They were very courteous and responsive to me through Yelp chat, and all the questions I had were answered very promptly. I'm so happy with the results and our dogs look so clean and proper now. I do not recommend this place. I tried their self service dog wash. Their tubs are too flimsy for…read morelarge dogs. And their shampoo's are so watered down that it just squirts out like tapwater. If you do go, you need to bring your own shampoo. On top of that, the "shampoo" smelled like something that's used commercially to mop floors. I've never smelled that smell before and a shampoo. God only knows what I was washing my dog with. When I asked the guy why the shampoos were so watery, he said that "they were running low so they added some water so that they would go farther until their next shipment arrived." Despite my better judgment, I also brought my Shih Tzu there for full grooming because she needed a haircut. When I dropped her off for her APPOINTMENT, the person that was going to groom her told me it would take a couple of hours meaning she would be ready by 11am, having a 9a appointment. At 11:15am I called the store to see if my dog was ready. The Store manager answered the phone and informed me that she would be ready around 2 PM because "they had a lot of walk-ins and other dogs that needed to be groomed too". I said well that's why I made an appointment and that the lady that was grooming my dog said that she would only take about two hours and would be ready at 11 AM. This person on the phone continued to argue with me about "you don't know how dog grooming businesses work," among other abrasive comments. I had gone out to run errands during these two hours and was nearby which is why I called. I decided to go ahead and go over there and pick up my dog - in whatever condition she was in. I figured if she was going to be another 3 hours, she was probably still in a cage waiting for her bath. When I arrived, they brought up my dog, who appeared to have already had her bath and haircut, Which made me extra confused - if she was already finished why did they tell me that she wouldn't be ready until 2 PM? When it was time to pay, one of the employees had to go back and ask what the charge would be for the grooming service. He came back flustered and said it would be $90! For a 15 pound Shih Tzu! I asked why it was so high, and he just said that's the price he was told. I asked to see a price sheet and he acted like he didn't know if one existed. Then he pulled out a price sheet that was laminated on a chain right there by the cash register and told me how these were "old prices from years ago" when he first started even though it was on a chain and laminated and right there dangling from the cash register. The price sheet for a Shih Tzu said $65 and up. I would certainly like to know why I was charged $90! Of course, there was no explanation. I cannot emphasize enough how much I do not recommend this place - self-serve or full groom. Save yourself a headache and possibly injury to your pet and go someplace else!

After consulting and…read moreinterviewing several different training groups all over Oregon and even as far south as California I thank God I found Shawn and The Dog Way. It's only been a few days since our first class and already my dog Edwin has much more balanced energy and behavior. For the first time I my life I actually feel like I really know what I'm doing when it comes to my dog and his behavior and I can be assertive in my demands of him. As a bonus the same things we are doing with him we are doing with our other dog Juno, which is a Doberman. She would growl and bark so aggressively running up and down our fence-line every time a person would walk by with a dog. Now she is barking maybe once or twice a day but stopping right away. Within a week I am sure she will no longer be barking or growling. This review is being posted at the very beginning of our training and I am so impressed with the knowledge we've gained and the changes we've seen in our dogs. I cannot wait to get Edwin to the boarding orientation so we can start him socializing with other dogs and learning the appropriate way to communicate and act. If you need help with ANYTHING dog call The Dog Way first. Don't waste your time on any other training. I've done treats, clickers, e-collars, gentle leaders and harnesses but the program Shawn has put together hands down WORKS. First off, training: In 2015 my family adopted a 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd, Lobo. I had no prior dog experience. I found Shawn and decided to take my new family member in. Prior to Lobo being rescued by the Oregon Humane Society he was abandoned at a pound after numerous backyard escapes and running around the streets in Clackamas. This dog I brought home was dominant, pushy, high energy, and totally ignored any command I gave him. He barked, couldn't be left outside for long periods of time, and jumped on furniture. So off we went to Shawn's for his 24 hour observation period. When I came to pick Lobo up the next day he gave us some training videos and a list of rules that Lobo needed to follow. He showed us how to do heel and blanket work and taught us the importance of being a leader. Shawn was informative, and he helpfully dumbed it down to one thing to remember (consistency) and one thing to work on (blanket time). When I put Lobo in the car he was shaking a little bit. A family friend with me at the time noted this and I made a note of it. I assumed it was because Lobo was so used to being in charge and he had been put in his place. Over the next several years I continued to work with Lobo using Shawn's methods and I saw great improvement. My dogs are my children, and I would never want to hurt them or cause them to fear me. Lobo doesn't. He loves me. We have a great relationship and are very bonded. Shawn's methods are NOT about fear and violence as some have suggested. They are about trust and mutual respect. How many times Shawn has said that "you must respect your dog and they must respect you" I can't even count. Lobo has blossomed under this leadership. He is the perfect dog. He is obedient, though he does test me every now and then. He is calm in the house and around people, and nothing makes him reactive. He is confident and will try to do anything I ask, even if I don't always think it through. He has faced fears for me because he trusts me, like swimming in a river. When we go out and about he is aware and alert and keeps an eye out for me, but he is never out of control or even close. He is amazing off lease and 100% reliable. He is great with kids, even when they have accidentally hurt him, and he has overcome dog aggression (he had gotten into 2 dog fights before). While Lobo started off a little put off by Shawn, he now LOVES him. Lobo gets super excited when we pull up to Shawn's place, and he always goes right up to Shawn to say hi. Shawn also loves Lobo and has told me so on numerous occasions. Last year (2020), my family welcomed another young Shepherd to the family. At 1 1/2, Ollie had already been through a lot before she was rescued by an animal shelter. She was anxious, shy, reserved, aloof, and went into panic mode if you clicked a pen. She didn't trust anyone. It felt like I was back to square one with her when it came to my knowledge of training. I knew what to do with a dominant dog, but an anxious one? I took her to Shawn for help, and when she first met him she was terrified. Now Ollie loves Shawn. She is starting to trust more and more and is way less anxious. We are still working with her and she continues to improve. In time I know that she will become every bit of the amazing dog that Lobo is. Thank you Shawn! Without you I am sure that we wouldn't have been able to keep Lobo, or at least be as happy with him as we are now, and we wouldn't have even dreamed of getting a second dog. Second, boarding: The boarding area is wonderful. I have been to the back of the house with Shawn to see it. The dogs get to run around a large secure area all day and play with one another. There is plenty of shelter and they always have fresh water because of a special pipe system. I don't ever want to board them anywhere else! They love it and I love it. One thing to mention is that on one occasion my dogs did get skunked, which was AWFUL. It wasn't Shawn's fault, but the smell didn't go away for months. The dogs usually need a bath after being boarded too because they run around with smelly dogs all day. Third, Shawn himself: Shawn loves my dogs and gives them lots of affection but is at the same time a good leader. My dogs love him. That relationship is very important to me. Shawn himself is loud, intense, and he talks a lot. A lot like me actually. Some people may call this abrasive, but it is his personality. Sometimes I do need to interrupt him to get a question in, and sometimes I have to put a time limit on a conversation. That being said, none of that is unique to Shawn. If you think he is talking too much tell him so instead of getting secretly offended. Having spent more than 7 years using "The Dog Way" training method and working with Shawn, I am confident in my review.

Our dog had been attending weekly--sometimes twice a week--for almost a year, 45 times in total. Each time we picked him up, we made it a point to ask, "How did he do today?" and every single time, we received positive feedback that "he did great." Based on these 45 visits, we thought everything was going well and that the daycare staff was happy with his behavior. We'd even invested in training sessions (both private and group) through them. Then, a month ago, the owner (whom we hadn't met before) was the one to retrieve him. We saw through the window as she aggressively put on his collar and yanked him out. We were taken aback, but after learning that other former clients had left due to her and issues similar to this, we didn't bother to complain. We hoped it was a one-off incident. Unfortunately, things got worse. Last week, we dropped him off for his usual visit and received a call just two hours later from--you guessed it--the owner, informing us that our dog was permanently banned for being "too hyper" and "endangering other dogs with his running." This was not only a shock but incredibly frustrating. He wasn't aggressive or harmful to any other dog; he was simply being a dog. For an establishment marketed as a daycare, you'd expect some understanding of typical canine energy. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, as their own trainer has stated on more than one occasion. When we pressed for details, we were told this was the "final strike" and that our dog "doesn't listen." This accusation was both unfair and absurd, especially since we were never informed, not even once, that his behavior was supposedly an issue. Let's not forget we invested heavily in training with their staff. If his behavior truly was a problem, then the training was a complete waste. On more than one occasion, we had watched through the window after dropping him off, and the daycare often looked chaotic, with dogs running all over and a single worker standing there, blowing a whistle and tossing treats without any structure. Looking back, it also explains why our dog would vomit almost every day after his visits, on top of the smell of urine and rubber that lingered on him after each stay. He even contracted Giardia twice, which should have been a red flag for us to stop going much sooner. To add insult to injury, we still had one private training session left, but when we requested a refund for it, we were met with resistance and disbelief from the trainer, who claimed they "can't really refund one training lesson." The lack of professionalism, transparency, and basic respect for clients here is astounding. Save your time, money, and peace of mind, and steer clear of Doggone Fun Doggy Daycare.

They are clean, organized, always have 2+ persons on staff, and the owner is a dog trainer and behavioralist. She knows exactly how to train staff and keep the dogs safe and happy! Also they use chemical free cleaner for clean ups so it's not toxic to the dogs if on their paws and lick. I know about 10 other people who are just as obsessed with their fur babies as I am, and none of us have had issues. Highly recommend.
