I began receiving text messages from my brother that he was concerned about her care. She wasn't sleeping due to the noise and she said they treated her like luggage and were very rough with her. On the afternoon of 4/9 I received a text from my brother the her edema had spread from one leg to both legs and her arms. Her oxygen was at 87. He requested an ambulance for her to go to the hospital and she passed away a few hours later. My Mom had many drug allergies and I'm not sure anyone paid attention to the potential side effects of the pain meds she was given for 4 days. Side effects which include low oxygen and swelling in the arms and legs. I feel my Mom's care was subpar and her care did not seem to be a priority as her health quickly declined in the 5 days she was there. We paid $4000 for her 5 days there. We requested a partial refund for the days before she arrived as well for the remainder of the month. To our dismay that request was denied. We thought she was in a safe place now we are left without our Mom and are despondent about her final days under their care.

While the staff seemed nice and the house appeared clean, my grandmother complained that the staff was rough with her and that she experienced quite a bit of pain when being moved around. She had recently had neck surgery so you'd assume that they would have taken extra precautions to ensure her comfort. Additionally, she began to experience severe edema and when the staff was asked about it, our family was told that it was "normal". The edema became so severe that she was literally leaking fluid from her legs and the staff simply put pads under her to protect the mattress. Meanwhile, my poor grandmother was left in wet clothes because her legs continuously leaked. Sadly, the situation became even worse and the edema moved up to her arms and the skin on her legs began to split, at which point staff contacted us and they were instructed to transfer her to the ER, where just 9 hours later, she passed away. She was in the care of this facility for six days. Just SIX days before dying. Our family paid $4000 for six days of, what I feel, was sub par treatment and we're now left wondering if we made a terrible mistake by choosing this facility. (I'd also like to add that they kept the full $4000 for the 5 1/2 days she was there. That's a cost of nearly $730 per day.)

After a few months, my mom was finally able to move into her own apartment on the 3rd floor overlooking the pool. It was like she was on vacation every day! I have been my mother's caregiver for 13 years since her dementia diagnosis. This was identified as…read moreAlzheimer's four years ago when she began living with me full time. I spent several years looking for a long term facility for her because I didn't want to be caught off guard if something happened and she needed placed. I didn't want this important decision made in haste. After visiting more than a dozen facilities in the valley I selected Pacifica. I tell you the background because I have read several reviews not all good about the facility and I feel it's important give perspective. In addition to my research and visiting the facilities around the valley, my father was in three different facilities before he passed. What I have learned and I believe families should be aware is no place is going to feel perfect. No place is going to be as good as your loved one with normal health or brain function and living in their own home. So it's important to look for a partner in your care. I am beyond grateful that I found Pacifica. Although it's only 4 min from my house I would not have known about it without Care Patrol who let me know they had Alzheimer's cottages. From the first visit I felt heard, understood and respected. When we have had what I call "growing pains" them learning my mom, them learning my expectations and me learning their abilities and goals for mom, the executive director and departmental directors have had their doors wide open. When there have been challenges there has been a very lovely word - "yes" that they use in order to make sure we find a way to make the situation better. I love that my mom still has dignity and privacy in the cottage. I love that the little things to make her room a home have been met with a yes. I think the cottage based system should be the future for Alzheimer's. I have not seen a cognition based system implemented as well as it is here. My mom is very high functioning and so are the peers in her cottage. But I have the peace of mind knowing when she does need more help or loses her ability to communicate etc that there is a place for her on the same property in another cottage. She lives in the memory care unit; you have to have a password to use the elevator to get to her floor. I forgot to mention, they have a tablet that you use to check in- you enter your phone number and then it asks if you're seeing your person. It takes your picture, then it prints out a label. You have to use it to check out too, security is important. I went to their Thanksgiving buffet, everyone went to the first floor and got their food. The whole dinning room was open, so family could come visit their loved ones.

His behaviors became increasingly erratic, needing family to stay with him 24/7, even though he was in Assisted Living. 3 ER trips in 3 days, physicians at the ER were all saying "this is end of life" - but the smaller hospice couldn't support us with the services we needed - basically, keeping him comfortable, calmed, able to rest, and not so fearful. We made the call to HOV and that same day, EVERYTHING was being addressed. He went from literally trying to climb the walls, injuring himself, thinking there were killers hiding in his shower, to resting quietly. We were kept updated by the compassionate HOV team. This made everything so much easier. The stress on family during this time is unbelievable - to know your loved one is in such great care, that we don't have to be there 24/7 while juggling work, home, kids, etc. is an incredible weight lifted. I've also worked with HOV on numerous occasions for work. As a nurse, I'm confident in recommending HOV. I also needed the 8 hours of training mandated by AZ for dementia care - and HOV provided that for free to our entire staff and did a tremendous job. Everyone on staff takes a personal interest in the residents well-being, and are very professional. The Caregivers are very compassionate, and demonstrate through knowledge of their most difficult jobs. Colleen, past Director of Medical Dept., has been extremely helpful during the tenure of my mom's residence. All of the nursing staff are exceptionally professional, and caring as well.
