My husband was in the rehab facility at The Terraces of Phx for several weeks. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I liked that they encouraged eating in the dining room and had nice table cloths with cloth napkins. He was given a choice for each meal. The PT was excellent and the facility is very clean. They have a large recreation room for bingo, movies, etc. Overall, it was a very good experience. read more

I recently completed a short-term rehab stay at The Terraces of Phoenix health center following hip surgery. I am quite grateful for the good care I received from the nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and the outdoor grounds are beautifully maintained. However, there were notable areas that need improvement. There were times when the care staff felt stretched thin, leading to slow response times when calling for assistance. Furthermore, communication between the administrative team and family members could be improved. A major concern was the doctors, who visit the facility sporadically; my wife was never able to speak with them. The biggest issue was the performance of the physical therapy team. There was no set schedule whatsoever, and they often rushed through sessions in just five minutes, combining physical and occupational therapy together. I tracked each visit to the gym, and we never reached the expected five sessions per week for either physical or occupational therapy. While it is a nice facility with a caring nursing staff, closely monitoring the therapy department, staffing levels, and doctor communication would make the experience much better. read more

My grandma just stayed there for almost a month. The communication was absolutely terrible. The day she got out, we still had no communication after they knew her Medicare was up the day prior. The food there was absolutely disgusting and no human should have to eat. I watched them give this lady slop. Looked like wet cat food. She asked for something else and they finally got her mashed potatoes. The lady in the cafeteria blurted out "she can't chew". (HIPPA?). The social worker was the one who did not communicate and told my mother "she lost all of my grandmothers paperwork and couldn't remember if she talked to the new facility she was being transferred to. There was a meeting scheduled and SHE NEVER SHOWED UP. Horrible. These are vulnerable people, not dogs. read more

Terrible place for rehab. Mother was not cared for, hearing aids not charged nightly. Phone rarely and it often went missing. Did not do physical therapy even 4 days a week and they left her in bed without feet raised and she had ulcerated feet due to neglect. Do not go to The Terraces for rehab. Go to VI Silverstone where I had her moved to treat wounds, which delayed her recovery from a broken femur. She still cannot walk comfortably. Pictures are worth a thousand screams read more

My mother in law lived here for the last 16 months of her life. Sadly, months after she arrived, the pandemic hit. She had begun to take advantage of the many social options here. Her two bedroom apartment had a fantastic view of the peak, with a bit of Camelback off to the right side. She was used to luxury, and had no real issues with the way the things were run. When covid came, they locked down the facility within an inch of the law. I never heard of a single resident catching the virus, and staff members were tested very frequently. Meals were delivered to her door every day, and her biggest problem was boredom. Her health started to fade with a series of strokes, but the Terraces kept her from getting covid. We were so impressed that we could see ourselves living here or something like it when we downsize. read more

My 90 year old mother was at The Terraces for over a month. For the most part I felt the staff was competent but not always responsive to her needs. My biggest complaint is that when I felt a serious issue needed to be addressed I reached out to Jamie Roberts the director and she never even acknowledged my concern. Two emails went unanswered. I have been dealing with the Terraces management since 2012 as my mother has resided there for 9 years, until one month ago. Although it is true that many employees are pleasant and some are even caring, the management has repeatedly left a sour taste in my mouth and I regret my mother's tenancy at the Terraces. I feel as if they tried many times to manipulate my mother to benefit themselves financially. I do not recommend this Senior Community. Placement professionals who place elderly folks in care facilities unanimously tell me that my mother would be far better off in a smaller home where she can receive better care for less money. You can see here that many other family members have posted comments about the Terraces management's allegiance to money over the well-being of their tenants/our parents. I am a Ph.D. psychologist and my husband is an M.D. physician. The management cannot fool us, because we understand health and patient care. I also understand my mother's desires and wish for her to be happy in her twilight. Please use a search engine to find opinions from unhappy residents and families from the Terraces, and learn why it is important to avoid this place! I plan to leave MANY MORE breadcrumbs for those in my shoes so they can avoid mud-puddles I have already stepped into. read more

THIS PLACE IS A DEATH TRAP. THE REHABILITATION CENTER AT THIS FACILITY IS A DEATH TRAP!!!!! The medical staff routinely ignore patients and do not provide them with required medications. They also do nothing to help the patient succeed at physical rehab. Plus their egos are so bad, they will risk patients health and safety over it. The rest of the administration staff will go out of their way to lie to patients and their families, and then extort as much money from patients insurance as possible. THIS PLACE IS A DEATH TRAP. PROTECT THE ONES YOU LOVE, DO NOT LET THDM SET FOOT AT THIS FACILITY, OR THEY MAY NEVER RECOVER. If you think I am over reacting, my mother's time here, she ended up with Sepsis and Pneumonia while at this location, and was allowed to just lay and rot until this location was done siphoning money from my mother's insurance... If they had sent her back to hospital the moment she showed symptoms of either, they'd have not been given money from insurance due to facility's inability to care for patient (fun things I've learned), so they held my mother past the threshold my mother's insurance had, then declared her to sick and sent her on her way.) This lead to a continued downward spiral that my mom was unable to recover from. So don't believe anything that the Terraces representative may say as a response. My mother did NOT enjoy her stay, and we hold this facility responsible for all of it's actions (which are well documented). read more

On several occasions, we had waited almost an hour for a nurse to come after calling one. What if my father had an emergency? This is completely unacceptable. I was told my Yelp review for The a terraces was no longer available and checked back regarding my February 2022 review of The Terraces. My review is gone. So much for the statement by Yelp that businesses are not able to take down reviews. I have my own opinion, but I will leave it to those reading this to draw their own conclusions regarding how/why that happened. I'll summarize again to help anyone considering moving a loved one into this facility. Dad (89) broke his hip on 26Dec. Surgery on 27Dec. Moved to Terraces on 1 Jan. A few weeks later we discover he is suffering from bed sores due to lack of appropriate care at The Terraces. They said they'd do better and would make sure to perform the very clearly understood and very simple to perform care which prevents bed sores. In February he's again got an infection due to bed sores due to lack of appropriate care by The Terraces. That went from his heel into his bone. Sometime after, my dad has seizures which The Terraces delayed calling 911 in response to. Ultimately they did and after moving to John C. Lincoln he was treated in the ER and admitted. The podiatrist had to debride the dead tissue from his heel (I have pictures - perhaps for the courtroom discussion). Turns out The Terraces had stopped medications 3 days prior. We never went back. DO. NOT. USE. This. Facility. I've concluded they do not care about residents. They care about Medicare and insurance payments. The owner (Edie?) suggested I contact them and upon doing so, as expected, I reached voicemail and no response. read more

My parents have resided at the Terraces for several years now, first in residential and now in assisted living. My father has had several stays at skilled nursing as well. The staff has gone above and beyond in the care, protection, and ensuring the well-being of my parents during this very scary time of COVID. The facility locked down early and quickly. The measures taken designed solely for the protection of all the residents. Information has flowed freely and the staff has been transparent in informing residents, staff, and family of developing issues above and beyond what is required of the state. I am grateful to all they do and know that my parents are well-cared for during a tumultuous and stressful time. I am grateful. read more

My Mom (whom has dementia) was admitted to their skilled nursing facility after a fall where she fractured her arm. Apparently, three days into her stay, they took it upon themselves to put her on Seroquel which is an 'atypical antipsychotic' used for mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. They appear to have prescribed it at the same time they called to tell me they were going to discharge her within just a few days complaining of her 'cognitive issues'. I say 'appear' because I only found out about their decision to do so upon having Mom assessed for placement in another facility upon discharge. It was pointed out to me by the individual performing the assessment who was just as appalled as I was. They did not consult with me as her daughter/Medical Power of Attorney. They said nothing. My Mom is not violent, she just has memory issues, needs extra assistance since the fall, and has a hard time understanding things. And, Mom is currently incapable of doing a lot on her own. They never even noticed or cared that she went that whole time without her teeth being brushed. The toothbrush and toothpaste were left untouched. In addition to the above, we scheduled a discharge time for me to pick her up. They did not have her ready (not dressed to leave, no belonging packed & no discharge paperwork completed) which led to a much lengthier discharge process. AND, they never provided her with a gift my brother shipped to her and notes as being delivered last Thursday. Thumbs down to this facility! So many to choose from...go elsewhere. read more

To know where I am coming from, I'm writing this as a former resident, who grieves for some wonderful people who are still there. I'm disappointed and saddened, but really not all that disgruntled. We were unjustly kicked out of this place some time ago. While this was a wonderful place in many ways, no longer is it so. The previous Executive Director (ED!) couldn't care less about the residents, staff (with the exception of a small number of cronies), a or the facility itself. There was an ownership change some time ago, and this wonderful place has gone downhill under the new regime. Apparently the bean counters are making all the significant changes to the detriment of everyone. They have a new ED, and she appears to be a major improvement over the former ED. However, she appears to be severly handcuffed by her management to the detriment of everyone. After the regime change, there was a change of foodservice vendors. The food, once outstanding, no longer is. It has really gone down hill. At it's best, it is OK. As guests, we have eaten there several times, and it usually is a disappointment. The same wonderful executive Chef is still in place, but his apparently severely handcuffed by his new management. Was a great place, but no longer is. Too bad, so sad. read more

I cannot say enough good things about The Terraces! Our family's first experience was in 2007 with my 85 year old Dad, who spent some of his last days on earth here. Dad had chronic pseudomonas pneumonia which was complicated by an epiglottis failure, so his prognosis was sad. The skilled people here provided comfort and care for Dad such as we had never seen before. They were PRESENT...checking on him frequently, and making all of us feel that our Dad mattered to them, too. Sadly, he was transferred to a hospital and died a couple days later. A week or so ago, my older sister (70) had a total knee replacement, and chose The Terraces as her Rehab home. The physical therapy team were superb, and provided intensive occupational and physical therapies. Her room was lovely, with a great view and a nice bathroom. The staff (Gloria, Donna, JEN, and Nancy, Nursing Manager,) were genuinely caring and responsive. Food was even great. If I ever fall and can't get up, this place will be my destination! Do not be fooled by negative reviews. If it is kindness, care , and comfort you want (who doesn't?), The Terraces is the place. read more

I WOULD NOT PUT MY LOVED ONE IN THIS FACILITY. We did and now regret it. To be completely fair, there may be areas of care The Terraces excels. I just wasn't exposed to one. The facts below reflect why I conclude that I'd never use this facility again. My 89 year old father fell on December 26, 2021 and fractured his left hip. He had surgery the following day. Five days later, he was transferred to The Terraces for rehabilitation of his hip. The expectation was that he would be discharged to his home within a month. In the beginning, the staff seemed very attentive and on top of things. The visitation/safety/COVID protocols were well thought out and easy to follow. The individuals I saw there and interacted with were, for the most part, very cordial, professional and pleasant. Almost all of the nursing staff seemed genuinely interested in doing the right thing. The day shift and afternoon shift personnel were very good. The night shift not so much. On one occasion, and one is too many, the night shift nurse, rather than be inconvenienced with doing her job and helping my father to the restroom, instructed him to "go #2 in his pants". Totally unacceptable. The leadership was aloof, although one of the Directors allowed me to poke my head in and discuss options for some in home care, which was much appreciated. They were also accommodating when I told them I was interested in speaking about longer term care at The Terraces. I was actually considering options for assisted living and/or independent living on campus. That will never happen. About a month into my dad's stay, someone noticed that my dad had bed sores. This was totally preventable. And it occurred 100% as the result of the failure of the care team at The Terraces. The staff failed to appropriately and routinely move his body around and elevate his legs. I can't imagine how, in a long term care facility in which people are confined to a bed, they could have let this happen. Once this was discovered and it was treated, The Terraces staff insisted they would ensure this would not happen again. A month later, my father began having seizures. He has a pacemaker and since he was at The Terraces, his pace maker base station was still at home. Admittedly, our family knew he had a pacemaker and should probably have known to do so, but we didn't think to have the base station moved with my dad to The Terraces so the pacemaker can send the data on his heart to the company that monitors that information. The Terraces knew he had a pacemaker too. They should have known to ask us to bring the base station to the facility for my dad's pacemaker to continue to send updates on his heart's condition. They did nothing. I've concluded that this is indicative of a bad pattern in the care provided at The Terraces. About a week ago, my dad started having seizures. At the time, the Terraces staff debated whether they should call 911 or not to get him emergency care. They finally decided to do so after the 3rd seizure. The seizures were several minutes apart and consisted of my dad saying people were screaming and it hurt his ears - he'd grab his head and his eyes then rolled back in his head. Then he would go limp. Three times. My dad was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital Emergency and admitted. There, the hospital staff discovered that his legs were in terrible shape. He had open bed sores again. One of his heals was so badly decomposed that a podiatrist had to come in and perform debridement to remove the dead skin. The infection had spread into his bone. When we asked The Terraces for the list of the medications he'd been receiving while there (which we were asked to do by the attending J.C. Lincoln emergency room physician), the staff balked. They finally provided the list and then admitted to stopping his medications three days prior. I suspect that's one of the reasons they were not interested in fulfilling our request. I'm a reasonable individual. And have had open heart surgery. The level of care in the Intensive Care Unit is very likely the best care possible. I understand that it's not likely you'll get that level of care when recovering from a broken hip or hip surgery - although I've also had a number of joint repair surgeries and was very well cared for each and every time. But the level of care should not be determined by how ill a patient is or the nature of their injury which requires care. While my life literally depended upon the care from the staff at the hospital I had my open heart surgery in, the lack of even basic care can lead to infections which may or may not ultimately be life threatening. In the case of my father, since he's still battling his infections, I'm concerned that the terrible level of care he received at The Terraces might result in him losing part of a limb or worse. I would strongly suggest you think about this before considering putting a loved one in The Terraces. read more

When unprofessional RUDE and uneducated staff are the face of the company it is a clear picture on how things are being run without having to be there! I am truly appalled at the level of care my grandparents received at The Terraces, first at the Assisted Living facility and then at The Grove, which was supposed to be a "specialized" memory care center for those with Alzheimer's who need extra help. The residents in The Grove are left to their own devices. I saw a woman just sitting in the middle of the hallway in her wheelchair, unable to move herself anywhere, just left there by the staff. For hours on end my grandfather would be left alone in his room, with no one checking on him. He fell TWICE within 48 hours because the staff were not even helping him get to the bathroom. Even when they saw him struggling to walk or get around, they offered NO HELP WHATSOEVER. Even when we, his family, were visiting!!! You'd think they would at least provide decent care when family members were there, but nope, that was not the case. One Sunday afternoon I was visiting my grandparents and went into the common area. There were about a dozen residents hanging out, and one staff member SOUND ASLEEP AT HER COMPUTER. I just walked up to her and stared in disbelief. Eventually a sound startled her (slightly) awake, she opened her eyes, smiled at me, AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP! When I was moving my grandfather's belongings out of his room, I was amazed that NO ONE cared that I was there or asked what I was doing. I could have been robbing one of their residents blind, they didn't even bat an eye as I took load after load of his belongings out to my car. One time my grandfather told my grandma and my mom that he had fallen over night, but no one had called my mom to notify her (as they are supposed to do per their own policy). When my mom asked a nurse, the nurse was extremely rude to her and refused to even check the notes from the night before to verify whether he had fallen or not. My grandmother expressed fear and concern because one of her friends on the Assisted Living side lost her husband after he fell at the Terraces and passed away. When my mom mentioned this to staff, rather than empathize with her concern, they were shocked and asked "How did you know about that?!" They were more concerned about people knowing of their negligence than about my grandparents' well-being. When my Mom confronted the staff and asked for an explanation on the discrepancy between the care they promised versus the dismal state of the Grove that my grandfather was living in, the head nurse told my mom it was "unfortunate" that my grandfather had transitioned to The Groves at this particular time, which, in context of the conversation, was essentially her admitting that The Grove is not what it once was and currently, for lack of a better word, sucks. Oh and be prepared for excuses. They will always come up with some excuse when you bring your concerns to them. They most frequently like to turn things around and blame the residents, due to their memory conditions. The grounds are beautiful, the facilities are immaculate, the pictures paint a vision of top notch care, but don't let any of that fool you. The Terraces and their staff view your loved ones as dollar signs, nothing more. They promise a dignified and active life for those with Alzheimer's but their care falls woefully short. They should be ashamed of themselves. If any staff take the time to read this review, please take the time to remember the people you are caring for are someone's beloved grandfather, grandmother, mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle. Would you want your loved ones treated that way? I think not. read more

Level of care is excellent here at the Terraces! Physical and Occupational therapists have done what I thought was impossible. I'm walking again. Nursing staff, aides, kitchen staff, activity staff, are all top notch. The facility is very, very clean. When I push the call button, someone arrives within a few minutes. (The last rehab center took over 2 hours to get an aide, and another 2 hours to get pain medication). Terraces is the best choice for skilled care! read more

I read with great interest the review by Angela N. about The Terraces memory care:The Grove. The care (or lack of) the reviewer's grandparent received was appalling! We were forced to move our mother out of the assisted living section of The Terraces (The Lodge) almost two years ago when the general manager of the Terraces sent us a letter saying, in essence: your (95 year old) mother must move to the Grove or get out! This was beyond shocking in our mother's situation as she was not a problem, not a wanderer, and still highly functional. Sadly, we chose to leave The Terraces, and mom, at almost 97, is living in another assisted living (not memory care) facility nearby. In my recent visit to residents at The Terraces, I was happy to learn that there have been some changes in management: The GM has resigned and the person who ran The Grove has also left. I was surprised that the manager of the Assisted living facility (which includes The Grove) was still there given that she oversees everything at The Grove including Angela N's grandparent's situation. In our dealing with her, she claimed to know all the residents and the goings on in the memory care facility and therefore should share the responsibility in that situation. I hope that senior management continues to make positive changes for their facilites. My mother is no longer affected but there are many lovely people still in residence that deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. read more

The Lodge at The Terraces of Phoenix is now managed and operated by a group called "Human Good". This is an Assisted Living Facility. According to many of the residents they can't find much "good" in the current operation compared to the old operations. A recent improvement was new tile replacing the uneven and dangerous flooring in the exercise room. But, this took about a year. Another improvement was to the outside courtyard. The concrete was cracked and raised by overgrown tree roots. Again, this was extremely dangerous for people with mobility challenges. This repair took over a year to be repaired and probably should have been done before Human Good bought The Terraces. The number of activities, and the quality of the activities has diminished. What happened to the barbershop day with pizza and beer? It is like it is too much trouble to think of new fun stuff to do for the residents. As other reviewers have mentioned, the bottom line of business practices seems to be the driving force in how operations are conducted. The once lavish salad bar is now half of what it once was. The meals are always bland. That is probably normal for this type of community. They used to have a monthly dinners where they could showcase their culinary skills. But now cheap has overtaken and these once celebrated events are all but nonexistent. What was once a monthly affair is now quarterly. What was once a family dinner is now limited to 4 people. Extra dinners can be bought for $20. The last Oktoberfest dinner was held at 5:00PM on a Wednesday. All of these restrictions take the family fun out of the family dinner. The last straw that just doesn't seem quite right is the asking, again this year, for an extra Christmas donation/gift for the caregivers. The suggested amount is $620 per resident or $1240 per couple! WHAT!!! The caregivers are the best, the kitchen staff are the best, the housekeepers are the best. So pay them appropriately. Don't ask for the residents to chip in at Christmas time. I believe the rates are already excessive and they want more. I have heard that it costs $1000 per month to dispense medicine, whether 1 pill or a 100. If we had a crystal ball, Mom would have been at a different facility. We are all still considering options because the future doesn't have to be cast in stone. When you are considering care for your parents be sure to ask all the right questions and try to look beyond all of the happy smiling faces. And remember things can change too read more

Caveat Emptor: Let the buyer beware. My mother has lived there since around 2007. For the most part, she has enjoyed the facility and her fellow residents. However, there are some things the marketing department or brochures will not tell you. My mother transitioned from the hospital to the assisted living center at The Terraces. She almost died of congestive heart failure due to a lack of attention and care by one of the nursing staff. Only at the urging of a sibling did the nurse call the paramedic. My mother received excellent treatment and care at Ridgecrest in north Phoenix. She refuses to go back to the Terraces assisted living center. Throughout the year, my mother has been missing items from her apartment. It started as small things- not too valuable so we never reported it. But recently, my mother (who is still mentally sharp) the missing items have included jewelry and cash. In trying to report this distressing issue to management, it appears management conveniently blames the resident due to the ages and mental states of the clientele. In my humble opinion, this insensitivity to a legitimate safety concern shows a lack of respect and care for a resident. Thinking of The Terraces? Beware! I do not want one of your loved ones to experience what my mother has gone through in the last year. read more

The Terraces is a Retirement Community with several levels of living arrangements. Most newcomers start with the Independent Living apartment. At this level you have the freedom to take meals, if you wish, or do your own cooking. Most people choose to take at least one meal a day in a very good dinning room, where you find flexibilty in menus, time of eating, and several options in food. The apartments are cleaned each week, and rugs are shampooed as needed. You pay a monthly fee for apartment and utilities. If you have reached the point where you need assistance with your medications, or have trouble moving about, you may move to the Assisted Living complex, which has a separate dinning facility. However, one may still choose to eat in the main dinning room, if they are able or choose to go a short distance. A third level of care is the Memory Unit, where people are usually encouraged to go when they need help in bathing, medication, eating, dressing and copping with everyday life. A fourth level is the Health Center, where residents can move when they need around the clock nursing care, or total care. My wife has experienced three levels of living here, and the care and attention she has received over the years has been quite impressive. I doubt that you will find another institution for Alzheimers's disease in the State of Arizona, that will surpass the Grove. As with all institutional care, one can always find areas of improvement, but the care givers that work at the Terraces show that special compassion that we all look for when it comes to our loved ones. read more

My Mom lived in independent living at the Terraces for 10 years. For the most part, she was very happy. She had a nice apartment, lots of friends, was active and enjoyed living there. After she died, I discovered 2 serious issues. Firstly, all of her good jewelry was completely gone. All that was left was her costume jewelry. Whoever took it, had time to go through it and steal all the expensive stuff. Mom never had guests in her apartment, but did have a few aides, all of whom I knew and were from reputable companies (ie visiting angels). Otherwise, it was the Terraces cleaning staff that had access. I'm not accusing them, but I wish we had kept her expensive jewelry under lock. Additionally, Mom developed dementia which was bad enough that she turned over her checking account to me. She couldn't even remember how to write a check. The management at the Terraces were aware of her deteriorating status and had recommended we put her in assisted living a few months before her death. Just before that time, they got her to sign an agreement to pay their non-profit (which helps people who can't afford to pay, so the Terraces gets their money) $50,000 at the time of her death!! She couldn't write them a check so they had her sign a promissory note! I found the agreement soon before she died and she had no memory of it and didn't want to give it to them. Forget the rehab at the Terraces! It is in need of a major overhaul. Front desk personnel that hide behind a pillar and if you ask questions they act like you are bothering them.. no meetings or updates till you are about to check out with therapists. I know what Medicare guidelines are. Do they really follow them? Bedsores,that medicine was only used if they remembered out of 15 days. Maybe 4 times .3 CNA,s who I found it strange that they would leave the area. Actually go out back, when people needed to be put to bed. And the only one who did anything he would be in another area, and they deserted the floor. Shower or bathing days 3 in 15 days and a week in between . And wouldn't haven't gotten it if I hadn't requested. No personal grooming till after 12 days. The final straw patient fell hit his head they didn't find him till another patient called. Nurses buzzer didn't work. The whole time patient was there. Didn't order X-ray till I requested it. Didn't give him pain pill till 4 hours after. Seriously do not judge a book by its cover. It's beautiful on the outside the Terraces but the staff most a majority and again the women,are either lazy , lackadaisical or just incompetent. You would think this place would have higher standards. Where are the people in charge . I don't think they should do rehab for outsiders. read more

I've made two momentous decisions in my life -- the first at 21 to marry my husband of 54 years and the second at 77, after my husband died, to sell my 3500 square foot house on a golf course in Paradise Valley and move to The Terraces of Phoenix. Living became more active and fun almost immediately. Trips like one to Canada coming up next month keep me from sitting home because my life-long companion is gone and exercise classes keep me agile and strong enough to participate in the multitude of activities available to me. I've often said that if I'm bored here, it's my own fault! My kids know I'm where I want to be so there will be no big discussion about what to do with mom. They visit and I take them to the dining room to enjoy world-class meals -- with wine, if desired and I desire. read more
