The energy and cleanliness of the store and people are "ok " (depends on the day). The shop is loaded with a ton of vinyls and leathers (more variants than you will find anywhere), some fabrics and various upholstery foams. Beware that, altho it may be somewhat organized, you have to sort thru a bunch of roles of fabric/vinyls all laying on top of one another--some that are quite large and some very old! But if you're looking for bargains, this is the shop for you. I am upholstering the walls an our upgraded camper van. Living in OC, it seems our choices for quality and affordable upholstery shops are somewhat limited, so you kinda have to look around! I ended up buying my closed cell upholstery foam from A1 (ordering online with pickup is cheaper!), then buying my vinyl at the Decorative Fabric House, which is way more organized and accessible, but typically more expensive (and some of the sales people can be quite snooty!) I bought my upholstery fabric (for seat cushions, etc) at Dorrel Fabrics, and my 3" cushion foam on Amazon. Lastly, I bought some fabulous Cork fabric for my window shades at Joann's Fabrics (40% off sale). Located in a ghetto part of Santa Ana with Gang graffiti all over the place, located in the back of the building through the alley way. Great supply of materials and accessories. The service is very slow, seems under staffed. They cut foam to size but have to come back. You need to be patient but once its your turn they are helpful. As I'm waiting for my turn, other customers will try to cut in front of the line and try to get help. Luckily the worker told a rude couple they need to wait til it was their turn! The cushions in my 12+ year old sofa were starting to lose the structural integrity of -- well, pretty much anything. A-1 was recommended to me by a friend. Fortunately it's pretty close to my work, so I took the cushions out of my couch and brought them in. The sales person I worked with went over the options and I selected a medium firm cushion. They were ready in less than a day. The new cushions felt very firm when I first put them in the sofa, but within a week or two they started to relax just enough so that it didn't feel like a yoga mat :) Now I feel like I have a whole new sofa. I'm glad I went to A-1. Ample parking and entrance is around the corner from the front of the store. read more

I needed a cheap foam so I can sleep in my closet of a room....(long story). Here was my experience on a Saturday afternoon. AMBIANCE: Feels: About a good 7-10 minutes from Downtown Santa Ana. It's plaza parking so you shouldn't have any issues finding parking. There's a taco truck and a food market around the corner if you get hungry. There's also random every shops in the plaza as well. Really nothing special, just a place to get stuff done. MATERIALS: Probably not the best or bourgie quality of selections but it gets the job done. I told them our measurements and the foam fit the closet reasonably well. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Pretty good. Nothing too memorable but they weren't rude. TL; DR OVERALL: 3.5 Stars. Good prices, par quality, and good options. I wouldn't mind coming back here and I'd suggest others to check this spot if they're looking for unconventional furniture materials. Been coming to A-1 for decades now. Huge selection of every kind of foam (duh) available, along with tons of upholstery fabrics, glues, paints, dyes, and hardware to complete any DIY upholstery project. TIP: custom foam sizes are just that: custom. So the prices will reflect that. However, there are various areas on the floor with precut sizes, remnants, and blems that are awesome values. The custom sizes are a little less expensive than say, Joann's, but the real value is the precut, remnant stuff. Service is spotty; sometimes really good and sometimes indifferent. I'm sure their bread and butter is upholstery shops and not you, the soccer mom who asks lots of questions looking for a dog-bed insert. But they will do a decent job. Try to know what you need and that helps a lot. Because there are, frankly, thousands of variations in foam types, sizes, memory, quality, toxicity, flammability, etc. this place has a TON of different foam. Location is downtown Santa Ana, so realize you're not at the Spectrum. It's an older, urbanized, inner city commercial area. But fantastic selection and EVERYTHING you need to upholster just about anything. read more

Great service! Awesome product! I came in for a mattress topper 1 year ago and it's holding up great. I didn't know much about what kind of mattress topper to get but this place was recommended to me by a friend. Service I was immediately greeted walking in the door and asked if I needed help finding anything. The person at the front counter referred me to another staff member who then proceeded to take the time to explain the differences in foams and what they recommended for a mattress topper. The staff here were very friendly, patient, respectful, and informative! The turn around time seemed very reasonable to me as they were able to cut and deliver the foam to me within 3 days(also I was told you can order online too - cool!) Other Products So while they don't let customers into their foam department (because of their machinery used to cut foam), I was able to roam the store and see what else they had. TONS of fabrics, sample books, leathers, foam, vinyl, upholstery supplies...the list goes on. I mean just walls of rolls and rolls and rolls of fabric. I asked if they would cut one piece of foam for a personal sectional and they told me they would but when I broughtt in the piece they refused to cut it. I even asked for the manager and he said no. A shout out to Loren, manager at A-1 Foam and Fabric. I had three cushions that I needed new foam for and wasn't sure what the correct thickness should be. Unfortunately the foam I ordered was about 1/2 inch too thin. I reached out to Loren and he said "he'll make it right," even though the error was likely my fault. Bottom-line, Loren had me bring the foam and the cushion covers in and he wrapped all three in Dacron batting and viola! The fit and appearance could not have turned out better. You know, the crap reviews of this place really blow me out of the water. The fact that I can get cold Mexican Coke at the supermarket next door, and hit up the candy shop two stores down, just amps up my positive memories. I've never purchased any fabric from here, but let's talk about the rest: 1) The foam. Cheap and high quality. 3 inches thick, cut to measure, and very firm. Cut while I wait. So super fast. Around $10 per seat for kitchen chairs. Cheapest I've seen anywhere, and super convenient. Edit 4/24/14: Just recently got new 5 inch foam for my couch cushions and it was $40 for each cushion, 22 x 24 inches. 2) The leather spray-color. I "refinished" an entire leather couch and recliner with six cans of their magical leather spray. Not only does it leave the leather soft and supple, the color penetrates and there is no odd smell. Each can is $10, so I took a free (and really grody) couch and transformed it for only $60. 3) The colored leather bonder. I had a 3 inch rip in the above mentioned couch. The colored bonder is like glue in a spray can. Using the colored bonder (in the same color as the leather spray-color), I first "glued" the rip together. I allowed it to sit and tack up before wiping away the excess with a lightly soapy, rung out washcloth. After drying, I repeated again just to make sure the rip was securely patched. After going over this newly patched area with the matching spray color, the rip has almost completely disappeared. Anyway, the four stars is mainly for the quality of these products, which are crazy cheap for the result, and have consistently given me miracles. A-1 is a diamond to me in an otherwise rough part of town. read more

Crafty momma here -- writing to say A-1 Foam and Fabric and Upholstery is my shopping location for firm foam, pillow forms or upholstery fabric. I shop at A-1 when I can't get to downtown LA's garment district or when I just don't want to deal with the chaos -- the hustle and bustle of the garment district. LA can get a little crazy with the crowds of shoppers. Plus, A-1 has a huge selection of upholstery fabric and at the same reasonable prices as in LA. And when I compare it to Joanne's, A-1 is far more reasonable for upholstery fabric. A-1 only carries upholstery fabrics and car upholstery fabrics. They have an abundant selection of car upholstery, carpet and car foam. The foam selection is impressive as is the upholstery fabric selection. Only, looking for a particular fabric you have your sights on can be like looking for a needle in a hay stack here. They have way too much fabric choices that it can get overwhelming finding what you are looking for in store. I recommend asking for help from the staff. They are very helpful. If they don't have what you are looking for, chances are they can order it. As Karen H. wrote, the store has a funky fume smell as you walk in. As I walked in, I thought, "What the hell? I'm gonna get high smelling these fumes." But the smell dissipated once I got past the entrance and was further in store. Made me realize though, the poor employees are smelling those same fumes everyday. Not good. The store's owner needs to install some vacuum fans and do something about that smell. Hold your nose as you walk in and get past the entrance. You should be alright once you get past the fumes smell. read more

Just about finished with re-carpeting my 1932 Ford coupe using carpet purchased from A-1 Foam & Fabrics and Upholstery Supply. The carpet is very thick, short cut pile with a dense, very flexible backing. It is so easy to work with this carpet! This is my first attempt at replacing carpeting in a car and it looks fantastic! I've been here 4 times purchasing and pricing foam. The price changes depending on which salesperson you get. I even had the salespeople write down the measurements with the prices and still different price when I return shortly there after. They have an unbelievable amount of material and foam. You will find what your looking for if it's for upholstery. read more

I always get great customer service here and the fabric prices can't be beat. Most of the fabrics here are vinyls, but there are a few other ones. Pricing will be different than what is on their website, though. If you're looking for a larger selection of fabrics, I'd probably go to Dorell in Fountain Valley, but I prefer to come here when I can get away with it. read more

A-1 is a good resource for Foam and Upholstery but they are VERY rough around the edges. Like many trade specific places, they sorta want you to know EXACTLY what you want. They don't have a lot of patience for a customer asking advice, questions, sorting things out on the premises, etc. They will help you if you keep bugging them but not gladly. Either way, I'll go back... I'm there for what they sell and not the service. My main tip is to let you know that the white guy doesn't work there. He just wears the shirt, comes in every day from 9 - 5, and is always behind the counter. But don't let any of that fool you. If you dare ask him a question he will return a volley of dumb looks, throw his hands in the air, and vocalize such expressions as "how am I supposed to know" or "sometimes I wish we had no customers" read more

I'm an interior designer and I walked into this shop looking for a bouclé fabric for my client. I asked the young woman at the cash register if she could help me find a particular fabric. She told me I needed to go to the information desk-- Okay, no problem. I started walking towards the back of the store when I was stopped by a middle-aged man who was assisting another customer. He asked me "What are you looking for?" I told him that I was looking for bouclé fabrics and if he knows whether or not they have any. He seemed confused and told me that he's never heard of bouclé. I showed him pictures of the fabric on my phone, hoping he'd better understand what I was searching for. He proceeded to tell me "Sweetheart, I've been doing this for 30 years and I've never heard of bouclé. That looks like chenille to me." I told him "Bouclé is not the same thing as chenille, but don't worry about it I will keep looking." He insists on pointing me towards a shelf of chenille fabrics, at which point I left the shop. It's one thing that he is working at an upholstery supply store and has never heard of bouclé, but what really drew me away was his demeaning reply and overall lack of accommodation. As a young woman, I seemed to get subpar service compared to the man in his 30's whom he was helping. This misogynistic interaction was enough to steer me away from this shop forever. If you are a young woman who would like to be taken seriously in your trade, please avoid this shop and take your business elsewhere. read more

Manager refused to put my information into the system to complete a transaction, presumably, because they were 30 minutes from closing and then said that I would have to wait until Monday to be entered into the system to make a purchase. Unfortunately, for them, I was ready to submit a very large order and now, because of this experience, I will not be back. Very unfortunate, because I have been shopping with them for years and they have been consistently good until now.
