I had A1 Garage Doors come to my house last year to inspect our garage door. We use it like the back door of our home and I wanted to make sure it was healthy and happy. The service tech was knowledgeable and helpful, explaining what it needed. I chose to take his repair advice and also signed up for the monthly club. I got a call about a week ago telling me the company would like to come do an annual inspection of my door as part of the club membership. Because we use it so much, I agreed to their visit. Today, senior technician, Dylan K. came to my home. By then I'd received a call from the office telling me where I was on the schedule, I received an email from Dylan with a picture introducing himself, and I got a call from Dylan telling me he was on his way. Not your typical "waiting for the contractor to show up" experience. When Dylan showed up he was courteous, professional and knowledgeable. He asked if I had any problems with the door. We didn't. Then he proceeded to lubricate the parts and tighten all the bolts. (I know he did because I watched him over my garage's close-circuit camera.) After he finished he explained that the springs were overdue for replacement. He said they've gone way past their expected life. I've had garage door springs unexpectedly snap in the past and I know what a hassle it is to manually operate the door without the spring. I've also replaced a garage spring myself and know what a pain that is. Still I wanted to think about replacing the springs because they were working. Dylan was very no-pressure, had me sign the inspection worksheet and bid me a happy holidays. Before he drove away, my wife and I talked about the spring situation and decided to replace them. I went out to Dylan's truck and asked when the work could be done. He said, "Today!" He came back in and replaced them. He also found some bearings that were severely worn and replaced those. I've been a service tech and in customer service all my life. I know what great service looks like and Dylan is an example of stellar service. Our garage door increasingly was making disconcerting bangs and thumps when opened or closed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]After researching companies near us, we contacted A1 and they were able to come out quickly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The technician that came to our home said he could repair the door, but that it was an old door and that we should expect more problems over the next year, 2 at most before it would fail and we'd have to replace it. We opted to replace it instead of courting failure to function. We've had garage doors stop functioning before and it was never convenient or fun. He ordered the new door before leaving and was able to return and install it within just a couple days. During installation, he noticed a couple minor superficial dings while and said A1 doesn't leave customers with new doors with flaws. He left it installed and order another door, which again arrived in just a few days. The second new door passed his inspection and was installed - at no additional cost to us. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A few months later we noticed some noises when the door opened and closed, so we gave them a call. Again, a technician was out to our home within a couple of days, adjusted the door's balance and lubrication[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Because of the good reviews on Yelp we contacted A1 Garage Doors to replace our door. We had a verbal quote from another company but they were not very responsive. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The owner of A1 responds to reviews and requests quickly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]  They do have some negative reviews but those are all for a company with a similar name from people who posted to the wrong company.  We did look this up to validate the other company exists and has local offices, sometimes using other names like Don's Garage service which is part of A1 Garage Service vs. this company, A1 Garage Doors.  So hubby called them and received an estimate over the phone for a Liftmaster 1/2 HP, 2 remotes and a keypad for about half the quote from the previous company. We booked an appointment and the technician (Jayden) called 30 minutes ahead as promised and arrived on time.  There was no attempt to upsell and the work was completed within an hour.  We are very pleased with the results and would recommend this company. read more

I didn't realize how much I took my Liftmaster connected garage door for granted until I lost total access to it -- we are talking no remote car access, smart phone or even the single big button wired in the garage. Plus... as luck would have it -- it happened on a Sunday. After some trouble shooting, I realized my master/wired control took a dirt nap. Just a warning NOT to use this company. They quoted me over $600 to fix a broken spring on my garage door. I told them I would think about it and called additional providers. They charged a $20 fee to come give an estimate which goes towards any future work. When I called to question the estimate and ask if they really charge $180 for labor for 30-45mins of work "Sigh" the female staff person who answered the phone said yes they do. All 4 other companies I called quoted me a price between $229-299 for the same work and were able to give me very specific information over the phone. A-1 Garage Doors said they would match the price and warranty. So I went with them. They said for an additional $99 they would add rollers and the warranty. We said ok sounds good. They showed up 1.5 hrs late and would not honor the same warranty as the quote I'd received AFTER they did the work. When I called to discuss with Josh, so called manager, he was argumentative, unprofessional and rude. He kept asking if my garage was working or not. Sigh was eager to get me off the phone many times and was not professional. Communication was difficult and I had to call multiple times to finally get an invoice for the work done. The promise of matching the price and warranty of one of other companies was not honored. I should have gone with my gut and not used them for the principle of the matter. Yes, I am one of those guys who believes if your say you're going to be there. Show up or give the respect to call and say your going to be late. A1 Garage Doors Service (corporate address is Phoenix, AZ)came on 5/31 to repair my garage door. On 7/13 the garage door would not close. I called them to come and fix what was wrong after they had supposedly repaired it on 5/31. They couldn't come until Saturday and I am moving that day plus they were going to charge a trip charge and service fee since it was more than 30 days since the repair. I called another (reputable) company that came out today and showed them the A1 invoice and was told I was overcharged by $600. These people are dishonest by overcharging and adding "labor" charges for items that the labor charge should be included in the cost of the part. Bait and Switch I rarely do bad reviews, but after dealing with this company for 2 weeks, I'm left with nothing but bad impressions. When I first called for a quote on 3 single bay steel garage doors, with insulation and windows, I was given an estimate of $875 per door, installed. I asked them to email the quote to me as well, but never received anything. When the estimator came out, an hour past the 2 hour window they told me to expect him, he put the quote on paper for Doorlink doors. I was expecting CHI doors, since that is what is is advertised on the A1 website, but oh well, it seemed like a fair price, even with the added fees of old door disposal (you'd think that would be mentioned during the original replacement quote though). I called back to schedule the next day (a Friday), repeatedly, without getting a human on the phone. I left a message but got no call back. Monday morning, I finally reached someone but was told she would call me back after she pulled up my paperwork. No callback. Wednesday I called again and was told by Bruce that if I wanted windows it would be an extra $200 per door. I sure do need doors, but I'll be pursuing them from a more professional installer. read more

I called A1 (without reading the useful reviews) to service my 4 yr Chamberlain garage door machine. This guy came brought his ladder, looked at the machine (without touching) for 2 seconds, heard our complaints about the machine and said "you have to change with the new one, belt is not good and the machine is basically just a piece of junk!" I was what the h@ll was this person talking about!!!" He said it'll cost us around $650.- and they are going to change our belt with metal conveyor. I heard from the previous guy that metal is no good. So I argued him by saying that "you don't have to test nor inspect the machine and you already know that it's a piece of junk." And he said "yes"! And he asked for $20.- for NO INSPECTION, NO TRIAL and GIVE MISLEADING OPTION! I'm so glad that I'm using my common sense and refused to change my "still good" machine! DON'T EVER TRUS THIS COMPANY!! Garage door spring broke back in 2017. A1 came out and replaced the spring. 2.5 years later the garage door is making funny noises. We called another garage door company to come out and take a look. We had a coupon for garage door maintenance and figured they could fix the problem. The guy comes and in just a few minutes says "It's the wrong size door spring. You should have the original installer come out and fix it as it's probably under warranty". He showed how the door is out of balance as when it is partially open it would not stay in place. The spring is too big for the door. He leaves an estimate for replacing the spring if we choose to do so and doesn't charge us for anything. Called A1 to come out. He takes a look and doesn't see anything wrong. The funny noise is intermittent and did not happen while opening and closing the door. However, as with the other company, we did show that the door would not stay in place when partially open, so it is definitely out of balance. We then showed the results from the other garage door company and the first words out of A1's mouth is "your warranty is now void". The explanation: A1 installed the correct spring, the other guys don't know what they are talking about. A1 says the spring recommended by the other company is too small and will have to be overtightened to properly open the door. The reason your warranty is now void is because we have no idea what the other guy did to your spring. I said "nothing, he just looked at it". For all intents and purposes, A1 basically said, "well you could be lying as we weren't here to see what they did so you have no warranty". The reason the spring isn't working is because it's a wood door that absorbs water and dries out over time which changes the weight of the door and weakens the spring. We should have paid A1 to come out every year for $89 to readjust the spring and this wouldn't happen. Their resolution: Replace the spring for more than the cost we paid 2 years ago. Retighten the spring for $150. In addition, we should pay them to come out every year for $89 "to adjust and check" until we buy a new garage door and replace everything. So it comes down to this: Do I trust a third party who charged me nothing and said the original guy installed the wrong spring and I should get it fixed under warranty, or do I trust the original installer who basically says "unless you do everything with us and only pay us you have no warranty"? And then add on, "continue to pay us $89/year for as long as you have that door to make sure it's adjusted correctly". My gut feeling is that the 5 star reviews are based on the fact that when they did work it was satisfactory and that was it. So as long as nothing goes wrong, it's probably ok. However, if something goes wrong, you're basically out of luck. Lastly, what company voids a warranty just because you have someone else come out to do work? There is nothing in their warranty that say the warranty is void the second someone other than A1 even looks at their work. I personally think you need to trust someone if you're going to do business with them. Who do you trust - the guy who says "pay for this, pay for that, and you have no warranty because someone looked at it", or the guy who doesn't charge you a penny and says "get it fixed under warranty"? read more

Very very shady company. Had service guy (Steve) come out to look at our garage door that was stuck half way open. Technician stated we need a new garage door and entire assembly and gave us an 1800 estimate. Technician also said he would charge $175 that day to "drop" the door from its stuck position on top of the cost to replace while we waited for parts for the new door. After stating we were going to get a second opinion the technician got pretty confrontational. We found another garage door company to come out for an estimate, they stated we did not need a new setup, only a tune-up. We had used A1 in 2004 to replace our springs. They broke again last week and I found the warranty paper. Called them that morning and they offered to come same day. I had an appointment so they came out first thing the next morning. Josh and Nolan installed new springs and new rollers in less than an hour and honored my warranty without me having to ask. They also gave me 2004 price for the labor and the new rollers. Its been a week and my garage door works better than ever. Much quieter now too. The lady answering the phone was polite and professional and so were Josh and Nolan. I was worried after reading the 2009 review on yelp.
