On Friday night I discovered that one of my sprinkler stations was stuck on. I did a little research and found a highly rated repairman in my city. I left a message after 5pm, thinking I would hear back the next morning. Crickets.... Finally I texted him and got a response that said he didn't work on weekends. After another text asking about Monday I found out that he was booked for 3 weeks ahead... That is when I called more repairmen...also not working on weekends. I finally called A1 Irrigation and Sean, the owner, answered the phone. He told me that he would be happy to stop by later in the day around 3pm. I got a text later that predicted ETA between 3 and 4. Later he texted again to let me know he was coming but running late. I got a phone call after that explaining that the job he was on was taking longer than expected. He and AJ showed up about 5pm. I expected him to give me an estimate and then schedule the work for the next week. Instead, he and AJ got right to work on the problem. They replaced the necessary parts, adjusted and repaired as needed and soon all four stations on my back hill were working perfectly. He informed me what was wrong, how they fixed it and assured me they had tested everything 4x. I asked him to test the three stations in my front yard as well and he found more problems that they also fixed. Sean and AJ were very polite and seemed to really know what they were doing. I appreciated the repeated communication when arrival was delayed. I really appreciate that they work on Saturday and don't seem to be turning customers away. It is awesome to have people in the service industry that understand emergencies and make time to help. They were here a little over 2 hours, tested and fixed seven watering stations, replacing parts as needed with supplies they had in their truck. My bill was $550, but they happily reduced the bill to $500 when I mentioned the Yelp $100 service for $50 deal I had seen on the website. I am not overjoyed about spending $500, but I am pleased that my two sprinkler systems are repaired and working perfectly again. I would definitely recommend Sean and A1 Irrigation. read more

I found A1 on Yelp and connected with Sean right away. He was willing to come over to our home in Venice within the hour and diagnose the issue. When he arrived, it was clear he knew exactly what he was doing. I loved that he gave me two options. For price A, we could get the sprinkler reconnected to the way it was earlier that morning. For price B, he'd go to Home Depot and upgrade the entire system to a wifi enabled hardware that would allow us to conserve more water during rain. I hired Shawn, who owns this company, to evaluate my irrigation system and to install a shut-off valve that would allow me to shut off the entire irrigation system without also shutting off the water to my house. He agreed to do that for an amount that seemed expensive, but which I agreed to. When he finished the job, he discovered that the shut-off he installed didn't turn off all the sprinklers. This left us both unhappy. He had spent several hours on the job and would have to spend many more to get the promised result. And I didn't get value for what I paid for, and I was not terribly pleased with our interaction. We worked out a compromise fee, which still left me feeling burned. He ultimately offered to come back and to make it right by putting in a second shut-off valve. read more

I had just self installed a drip irrigation system off an existing sprinkler outlet. I soon discovered that the elbow connection was leaking. I engaged A1 Irrigation and Sean responded immediately and arrived within the hour on time. This job involved having to remove some concrete surrounding the connection. He quickly diagnosed the problem and instead of just replacing the elbow, added an extension to give the connection more flexibility. I agreed to have A! Irrigation come out to give me an estimate. The person who came told me it was $750 to do the work. I told him that was too much and I would have to find someone else. He then told me it was $225 labor plus the sprinkler clock. I asked him to provide the total that would include the clock. This was important to me because his estimate had varied so wildly from the original $750 he gave me verbally. I requested his final number in a text message. He sent me an invoice for a $120 trip charge. I cannot approve for a vendor to do work for me without a complete estimate. I never have done that and never will. He verbally called me back on my speaker phone where other members of my household could hear how rude he is.This experience makes me less likely to use YELP in the future. I was also told by the A1 Irrigation tech that I have an old Orbit brand sprinkler clock and they do not make them any more. I just lined up a different company to do the work. I told the owner that A1 Irrigation wanted to install a Hunter clock. He replied that Hunter was the best for WIFI and Smart clocks (much more expensive). The new company will be installing a standard Orbit clock. A1 Irrigation arrived at our property at 9:12 am. At 10:10 am, the owner began asking us to pay the $120 trip charge. We still did not have a completed estimate (only the labor charge). At 11:33 am, he finally sent a completed estimate in an email. By then, we had ordered a sprinkler clock on Amazon and hired a different company to install it. Meanwhile, the owner has sent us a barrage of emails asking us to pay the trip charge and continuing to allege that we are "unprofessional." But from 9:12 am until 10:10 am his tech wanted us to give him our business while not having the clock specs or cost of the sprinkler clock. When the owner finally sent us his estimate at 11:33 am, he stated that a discount was no longer available due to our being "unprofessional." The tech kept stating that the high price was due to a 36 month warranty included. We asked him how long A1 Irrigation had been in business and he said the LLC was established about a year ago. So, we told him the warranty from a one year old company was not of great value to us. At 11:37 am, we received an email from John W. that said: This is what it looks like. It included a photo of a Hunter Hydrawise 14 station sprinkler controller with WIFI and Smart Internet on Amarzon for $275. We had emphasized to the tech that we only needed a 10 Station clock at the most. We ended up buying a $90 Rain Bird 9-Station controller on Amazon (no WIFI or Smart Internet. For the record, we have never spoken to John W. We have only spoken to the tech and kept emphasizing that there was no way to move forward without the material cost. Between 10:10 am and 11:33 am, the owner sent us email after email after email requesting we pay the trip charge. We did not receive the completed estimate with material cost until 11:33 am and we saw the photo sent to us of the Hunter Controller at 11:37 am. After 10:12 am, we started looking for another installer and bought the Rain BIrd on Amazon. Meanwhile, John W. (whom we never spoke to) besieged us with allegations of unprofessionalism on YELP. We are sorry we cannot give contractors jobs without knowing the full scope and specs for the job. But that has always been the way we do business. We regret that this one company considers it "unprofessional." read more
