In the end, I pursued another option thanks to a friend's connection that got me a very good deal. I contacted Watergate about some roofing issues at my home that I was aware were quite serious. I had two friends who both gave me a good reference for Watergate. One friend indicated they were they only company he'd dealt with that did not default to recommending a new roof. The other friend shared that they support Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit I also believe in. So, I contacted the company and requested an estimate. They set a date, and their employee arrived on the day and at the time that was scheduled. As I recall, his name was Max. We discussed my concerns. He did a thorough search of my concerns, and indicated he'd be contacting me soon with an estimate. He provided the estimate within the expected time-frame, which ended up being pretty rare among the estimates I did receive. He communicated well. He followed up multiple times. I will note the estimate was the second highest I received, though considerably lower than the highest. However, in their defense I felt like Watergate was really targeting solving all my concerns. They do offer a financing option. One slight customer service quirk of mine - if I e-mail you, I expect an e-mail response. Both times I e-mailed, within five minutes I got a phone call. If I wanted a phone call, I'd call. This is relatively minor, but it did bug me. It didn't bug me enough to drop a star. Overall, I was pleased here. As I noted, I ultimately opted for another choice but I was impressed by the service here. It didn't feel high pressure at all, though there was intentionality. There's a difference. I love that they work in the community. Since I have two friends who also praised them, I have to still give them a thumbs up. While I didn't choose Watergate this time, I was impressed enough that I would still call them again should future work be needed.

After doing some online research about shingles and the different manufacturers, I started contacting roofing companies, and fortunately OpenBox Roofing and Restoration was one of my calls. From my first contact through the completion of the roof installation, they were excellent! I called five companies, and of all of these OpenBox was the most responsive. Niles Hall was the project manager and he arrived the next day. After doing a thorough inspection of our roof, including climbing up to visually inspect it (two-story house), he sat down with us and explained what he found. With OpenBox being an Owens Corning Preferred contractor, he walked us through his recommendations, explained the roof replacement construction with visual illustrations, and left shingle samples. He even recommended a shingle color (Midnight Plum) that we decided to go with, and it looks terrific and neighbors have complimented us. Our lot offered some challenges in that we do not have a driveway, but Niles took ownership of the issues and figured out the logistics to make it work. (Note: The other roofing companies said it would be OUR problem to sort out.) He also took note of the extensive landscaping around our home and explained what his crew would do to prevent or minimize any damage to plants, and steps they would take after the roof was done to clean up any remaining roofing materials. After our meeting, we had a quote in hand before the end of the same day with different pricing options depending on the premium level of the shingles. OpenBox's pricing was very competitive compared to the other bids I received, while offering more. Also, they provided in writing the workmanship and shingle warranties that would be given by OpenBox and Owens Corning. Before committing to a vendor, I asked all of them to send me proof of insurance and bond, but only OpenBox came through. I worked with Megan Hughes who like Niles, stayed in contact with me and answered any questions that popped up. Niles and Megan made the whole process as worry-free as possible. We are very happy with the finished roof. If you are collecting bids for a roof replacement, I highly recommend including OpenBox as one of your calls.

Key issues (not exhaustive):…read more Skylights (0 of 3 done correctly): Two skylights were replaced with oversized windows, requiring re-installation about a month later once incorrect skylights were identified by homeowner. The third skylight, estimated and billed for replacement, was not replaced at all, identified in third-party inspection. Roofing Issues (some): Inspections revealed a torn shingle, nail pops, improper gutter installation in one area (still allows for standing water despite follow-up "repair"), flashing gaps around a reinstalled skylight, lack of caulking on the chimney, etc. Chimney Work: The chimney repair was poorly constructed and not as described. Billing: The bathroom vents and skylight mounts were not included in the estimate but were billed for-- should have been anticipated. The insurance invoice contained incorrect figures and lacked itemization. Leak: Only months after installation, moisture was discovered in the attic. Bob Baulerle (owner) and crew dismissed it as only condensation. Monitoring and expert opinions revealed a leak, potentially from the area of a ridge vent (installed by Bauerle Roofing) within inches from a skylight. Repairs to be monitored. Communication: Bob is increasingly disrespectful and unprofessional. He shifts blame, reacts defensively, and is the victim. He makes the process painful, and his assessments and work cannot be trusted. We've incurred costs corroborating issues & spent HOURS of time for improper work to be redone. Caulk fixes won't last the roof's lifespan, and excessive traffic redoing work will not have been good for the shingles. The roof/work will have to be regularly monitored. A new roof is an expensive purchase! I had hoped for peace of mind and a job well done. Hiring Bauerle Roofing has been a fraught, miserable, & costly experience thus far.
