My hair was bad. Very bad. Very, very bad. I was in terrible need of a haircut. My long-term barber retired, and the one with whom I begrudgingly replaced him had left his shop and moved to a very expensive one. $65/haircut? Wasn't happening. Not satisfied with any of the local shops that I'd tried, my hair just kept getting longer and longer (and not in a beautiful, Fabio's golden locks kind of way, but more a troll-like "who's that trip-trapping across my bridge" kind of way) as I dragged my feet in deciding who to try next. I found myself passing by AA on my way home today and, disgusted with my hair and new-barber-decision inertia, decided to see if it didn't have terrible reviews. Hair does grow back after all. I was pleasantly surprised by the very positive reviews, and the few negative ones tended to be about very specific complaints. So I rolled the dice and walked in. Place was empty, Alex was at the ready. I apologized for the bad state of affairs that was my hair. He smiled slightly. The reviews that state this is not a bubbly, sunshiney, unicorns and rainbows kind of place are not inaccurate, but a) I don't need that, and b) Alex was totally pleasant enough. I showed Alex my picture of "the best haircut I've ever gotten," and asked if we could get my head close to that as it truly was the best haircut I'd ever gotten, so much so that I'd taken a picture to keep, so that I could show future stylists what I considered the best hairc... well, you get it. He looked for longer than I'd expected. 7 seconds? 10? Pretty long, right? And then he proceeded to completely nail it. Completely. He matched the Best Haircut I'd Ever Gotten™ --first try. Excellent attention to detail. That little area by the cowlick towards the back of my head that presents a stumbling block to lesser barbers and always requires further instruction and tweaking... nailed it. It's what prompted me to write a glowing review as soon as I got home. So there it is. One person's opinion on the quality of their AA Barber experience. TL;DR: Excellent excellent work by Alex. Came here for the first time last month as I just moved into the area. I came in on a Wednesday during the day while no one was there. Arsen was a very nice barber who cut my hair in a short amount of time while being consistent and not messing up. No complaints from me. Also, the price is pretty good as well. I had been getting mediocre haircuts for years in Astoria. I then found a good barber but grew tired of him having phone conversations while cutting my hair, showing videos to co-workers mid haircut and the final straw was skipping my turn. Two years ago, I apprehensively went into Arsens (Alex) shop. I discussed what I wanted and 15 minutes later I had a perfect haircut. For over 2 years now every month I go and it's the same exact cut every time. He is so consistent and I have never left his place unhappy. One time I was in a local bar and an out of town barber approached me to compliment the fade he had done. He is so professional and always keeps his appointments. I am a regular here, since I moved to Astoria a couple years ago, and always had a great experience. The owner, Arsen, takes good care of his customers and makes sure to meet and usually exceed expectations. Very patient and thorough, he definitely loves his craft. When you think of most barbers, your probably think of an individual who is smiley, makes a lot of small chat, and is an extreme extrovert. Arsen, the only barber in this shop, does not fit that mold; he is serious, quiet, and introverted. And do you know what? Strange as it may sound, that's a GOOD thing. He is completely dedicated to his craft, focusing on cutting your hair, and not trying to schmooze to get your moolah. It's evident he takes great pride in his work. He does not cut corners (unless that's your hair LOL). Even if there are 2 people waiting, he will take extra care to get those annoying stray hairs that remain after the 1st pass of the clippers. He will spray water on your hair, determine your hairstyle shape, contemplate his handiwork, and then repeat the process until he himself is satisfied 100%. Arsen is the most meticulous barber I've ever had. I'm a bald guy who, for the last 15-20 years, has been getting his head shaved with a straight razor once a week. It looks easy, but so many of my previous barbers would miss patches --usually in the back where I couldn't see them until someone pointed them out. Arsen leaves my head as smooth as a cue ball, with no razor bumps or cuts. I've also sat in his shop enough to see him do all types of different cuts, and his customers always leave happy. He's a true professional and a great guy, too, with a fun sense of humor. And his prices are reasonable. For all of those reasons, he's very popular, so, especially on weekends, I suggest that you call for a reservation. read more

I don't know... all I know is I got one of the most lazy and rushed haircuts of my life today lol. For $12, you can get one of the best haircuts in Queens from a fast, professional, detail-obsessed barber, who always has a smile on his face and (for some inexplicable reason) rarely a long line of customers waiting. Honestly, I almost don't want to post this review: it's great to never have to wait for a cut. But it's just awful that such a great barber isn't busier.
