A good neighborhood barber shop in Astoria with reasonable prices and barbers who take proud in their craft . Went on a Sunday before noon and 30 minutes later I don't look like a hobo anymore with my haircut . Simple looking barber shop that reminds me of the barber shops of the past as many new ones lack that old school barber vibe . My barber was a wizard with his scissors and didn't rush when doing his magic on my full head of curly hair . In less then 30 minutes I now look respectable in public without the crazy long hair . I can't in good faith go back to this barbershop, which is a shame because I used to get some okay haircuts (and some not great ones). Last time I was in for a cut, I was the ONLY customer wearing a mask as the owner wasn't making people wear them inside the shop. Not only that, but the owner and another customer were talking about how "the media has made too big a deal out of covid" and how "it'll blow over soon". I also noticed that they were taking customers BEFORE phase 2, just with the shop windows closed so you couldn't tell from the outside. I realize that these are tough times for small business owners, but if someone doesn't have a mask, supply them with one. If they refuse to wear one, turn them away. It's for everyone's safety. Update: that's fine, Aron, you can continue to live in falsity if you like, up to you. But you and I both know that around 7:30 last night (after seeing this review) as I was walking past your shop we made eye contact as you were cutting a young man's hair who wasn't wearing a mask. Thought I'd give this place a try since it's closer than my usual spot. The cut wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I asked for. A little off the top does not mean take half of what's on top off. The barber then asked if that was too much off... after he had already cut it. I didn't have the heart to tell him. I still tipped and ultimately it's just hair it'll likely be back to what I want in a week, but they can be a tad overzealous in taking too much off. read more

I should had payed attention to other reviewers, first time I went there I was lucky enough to get a haircut by the other guy, a Hispanic barber, very nice person and an ok haircut from him. Second time I went by, the Hispanic guy was busy with another customer, so I had a haircut with the guy next to the window, who I assume is the owner of the shop, basically he wanted to serve first his friend who came after me, when I told him that I was in a rush and I had been waiting for at least 30 mins, he took care of my haircut with a really bad attitude, the haircut was ok, nothing extraordinary, just fair for the price. I paid and tip him 20% even after I got the attitude before being served. Third time I went there, hispanic guy is busy again, the other guy (Russian guy as far as I remember) is just sitting on his chair watching TV, as far as I walked in, he greet me with a 'are you gonna give me a tip today?', I'm like, well I tipped you the last time, and he replies, 'yes, but It was not enough'. The worst attitude, and the worst customer service I've seen in a very long time. Fortunately there are plenty of good barbershops in Astoria, and plenty of nice welcoming barbers who appreciate their patrons and do a great service. The one star is for the hispanic guy, he is a great guy, he does a very good job and he is very nice person, but his partner is really driving customers away. read more

I just paid $15 for the worst haircut of my life. I just moved to the neighborhood and needed a haircut so I thought I'd yelp a place. Low and behold, there's a place down the street that has 4.5 stars!! So I go to check it out. It's a nice place from my observations and it's not busy because it's in the late morning on a Friday. One of the barbers asks me to take a seat in his chair and asks what I want. I had long hair (my bangs went down past my nose) and requested if he could give me a pompadour with a fade on the sides. I had just gotten a haircut a few weeks ago so all the lines were there, I just needed someone to tighten it up and make it look sharp. After asking the barber, I noticed there was hesitation but the barber said that he knew what a pompadour was and would gladly cut it for me. I wasn't convinced because there was the hesitation so I asked again to make sure he knew what I was asking for, and again he reassures me he knows what he is doing. I thought, "4.5 stars? He must know what he's talking about." But I would soon realize that was the wrong assumption. The Sides and Back He starts buzzing away at the sides and around the back, but it doesn't really fade up! He pretty much just gives me a buzz cut that went to high outside the lines... and it's not like there's an eraser for cutting hair. He goes over it like he's fading it (and maybe he is), but it's not smooth all around - the sides and back of my head look like a crater with divots and valleys! When lining the back of my head he looks at the mirror on the back wall to see if it looks ok - why on earth do you have to look at a mirror on the back wall to see what's directly in front of you (if anyone has an explanation for this I would love to hear it)?!?! At this point I think to myself, "well it's still long on top, I can just style it and maybe everything will be ok." The Top He transitions to using scissors on top and pulls my hair straight to motion how much he's going to cut off. It was maybe about a 1/2 inch and I thought I'd be gracious instead of just getting up out of the chair right then and there. "1/2 inch? That's not too much. It's still long. I can still style it the way I want. It'll work out," I thought to myself. So then he cuts the top and I think it's over, but then he keeps going back over it as if to finalize the details. What was initially agreed to about a 1/2 inch turned out to be about 4 inches... It got to a point where he was about to cut a little more and I finally just ducked and weaved in Ali-type fashion to dodge his scissors. What's worse? He kept trying to cut more and told me to hold still!! I finally had enough and told him to leave what was left of my fucked up hair alone. The Gel So at the end, the barber asks if I want gel in my hair. At this point I am a little frustrated to say the least, but maybe there is some movie magic he knows about because c'mon - this place has 4.5 stars - and it's not like he would be cutting off any more hair. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't until this point that it was blatantly obvious that the barber didn't know what a pompadour was. He oozes out some gel onto a hair comb, runs it through my hair, and combs it over to one side... If you have short hair and just need a "2 on the sides and make it a little shorter on top" then this place might be the place for you (and I am being VERY generous). But if you need anything other than a military cut, save yourself the agony and go somewhere else. I was hoping to look sharp for a wedding I have to attend tomorrow, but instead I have to go looking like I got in a fight with a lawn mower... and lost... read more

I wanted to wait until my second haircut here to write a review. These guys are very nice. The price is fantastic ($12 for a men's haircut? Yes, please). Both times, I walk in with sort of a vague idea of what I wanted and the younger gentleman gave me some options and ended up cutting my hair better than I had expected. Previously, I had been getting my hair cut in the UES and paying twice as much. I am generally pretty quiet, and there was no small talk forced, but it was still very comfortable and casual. Big fan of coming here since moving to Astoria. Really great cuts and nice people. Was pretty disappointed to arrive on a cold Friday night at 710pm to find the door locked with a closed sign up. People were still getting their haircuts and waiting...Says you guys are open until 730pm. If you plan to not give anyone cuts after 730pm....close at 7....You'll save people the trip and inconvenience, especially when it's freezing outside. read more

I have been living in NYC for last 25 years. I recently moved to Astoria from upper west side. Since my last person who was cutting my hair for a long time decided to move back to his country, I had to start over finding a new one. I googled and found about this place on Yelp. There are some mix reviews but I decided to support local business. As I walked in, nobody was there. Then I mentioned I read reviews and am looking for a guy named Aron. Some people mentioned here he seems the only decent one. However, I was guided to older guy. He was very quiet and didn't speak English that much. I showed him a couple of my old pictures how I want my haircut. This guy kept cutting and sooner or later I started getting nervous because he didn't look like he knew what he was doing. Well, it was too late to ask him stop. I was so pissed off but tried to stay clam. A ponytail hair guy saw my hair and admitted it was bad. He told me haircut is free. Yeah, I get a free haircut to look bad. Do not believe this place's positive reviews. In my past 25 years of living in NYC, this is the worst place I have ever walked in for haircut. "Clean up the top but keep it long" *cut 3 inches off* I wish I could've stopped him but once he started cutting it was too late. So I am new to the neighborhood (as a lot of reviews say), and decided that I needed a new barber- nearby and someone good. So after the pre-requisite call, I headed over. Check the cheat sheet of cuts and prices (on the wall or in the photos)- when it's clear what you want, it's what you get! I wanted a typical conservative cut (the sides short and top parted), but without the electric razor, which is a scissor cut- no problem, and the prices are on par, so no issues. While cutting he confirmed that yeah the top would have to get just a little bit off (hey I accept the fact there is less up there than there was 10 years ago), but he managed to put a bit of an updated style in, which I can easily get into form each day. Had a great experience at Astoria Barbers. Being from Long Island i wasn't sure where to get my haircut when i moved into Astoria. Gave this place a shot and was very pleased. The owner was very friendly and talkative and all of their workers payed very careful attention to detail. I went from a 15 minute clean up in Suffolk county to a 30 minute cut where i could tell the barber really wanted to do a nice job and cared about his work. Not sure the barbers name but he was Spanish and worked the middle chair. read more

He said ok no problem. I went in and reminded him I just called little while ago he said ok np. I sat down and told him what I wanted. He asked a few questions. I got exactly what I asked for l. I've been cutting my hair with Aron for over three years now. From my long hair days to my short hair and to everything in between. Aron is very professional as well as the staff, and on top of it you get a great haircut for an unbeatable price compared to Astoria prices. There is no reservations which is awesome since I can never make any appointment. Walk in have a seat until you are next and with 3 barbers time passes quickly. There's two tvs, and magazines there to keep you entertained as well. Once you are up at the chair . The team makes you feel like family . I believe this is the report I've built with them over time. Aron continues to recall my work , family . And events we have spoken in the past and we continue to have conversation about them like time never passed. The main guy Aron gives great haircuts but he is a huge grump. Always seems pissed and that you're a bother to him. A real shame bc like I said he gives great cuts. I still leave $5 tip even though he's a grouch. Would be 5 stars if he was more friendly. I still get my haircut here every month. As I said in my initial post, Aron is really an awesome barber and I continue to tip very generously. Just can't understand his seeming to be in a bad mood every time I've been there. I definitely feel he's costing himself more customers with his personality. Would like to see him be more friendly and realize what a difference it makes, but I doubt he will change. Oh well. Wish things would've changed here, but I've finally come to the conclusion that it won't and will no longer be coming here. A real shame too. I've said it before, Aron gives great haircuts. Just isn't a friendly person at all unless you're one of his "boys". I had been going there for years. My boyfriend has come here a few times, decent haircut at a fair price. Customer service is unfortunately extremely poor. We came by on a Saturday about 45 minutes before closing time to see if anyone was available and two of the barbers were finishing up with their clients. Since no one said anything to us, we sat down and thought someone would cut my boyfriends hair once they were done. The owner who was by the window finished about 10 minutes after we got there and then went to the bathroom and never came back out. He had to have been inside for about 20 minutes because we waited for 30 minutes before we ended up just leaving. The second barber finished shortly after the owner and just stared at us and left the shop. She didn't say a single word. It would have been fine if they didn't want to do additional cuts for the day, but they could have just told us instead of making us think they would eventually get to us. It was extremely uncomfortable and unprofessional and we waited 30 minutes just to be ignored. We ended going over to another barbershop in the neighborhood. read more

When I started looking for a good barber in my area a few years ago, I tried several shops before someone I know recommended Astoria Barbers. I tried it once and I've been going back ever since. I've always used Aron, the owner and he's always given me a clean professional look. I see them cutting different styles. There a bunch of hip guys but...I'm kind of past that point in my life. I do look for a clean shop, a professional attitude and a consistent result in terms of the cut itself. That's what you get with Astoria Barbers and I would recommend them without hesitation. Also...I saw a comment that they haven't been wearing masks? Wrong. I walk my dog past that shop several times a week and I was in there today. Everyone had masks on and I've never seen anyone without one. That's the kind of thing some rival shop writes to undercut a competitors credibility. Aron and Isaac are the best. Aron owns the place (I'm pretty sure) and he works with his cousin Isaac. They're both really nice guys, and give you a solid low-maintenance experience, the way a barber should be. None of this fake chattiness you get at a "salon" that charges you $30 for a hair cut anyway. They talk to you like a real person who's paying to get his haircut, and if there's nothing to say, you watch whatever show or game is on the TV. No problem. Okay, but this is all the icing on the cake. The real win is the haircuts. Isaac really knows how to cut a guy's hair. He listens to what you need, and then just gives you an excellent haircut. And somehow he just seems to care about his work. He learned to cut hair from his dad, and that's just some motherland pride in his work. And the kicker? Best price in town.
