​I brought my pre-OBD vehicle here for a STAR certified smog check. The price was decent at $118 compared around shop within Alameda, which is fair considering the necessary dyno run. The shop owner is outstanding: friendly, professional, courteous, and incredibly efficient, especially for a one-man operation. ​However, a major word of caution for manual transmission owners: The owner rode my clutch excessively when moving the car in and out of the shop and while getting up to speed for the dyno stages. I could hear my clutch protesting with every shift. ​While the customer service was excellent, and the price was fair, I cannot bring myself to return with a manual transmission car. I took my high mialage, (1998 with 247,655 miles) to a Test Only station in town where I FAILED badly. I didn't like the wait, several people ahead of me. He was business like but curt. After the failed test, he had no suggestions, nothing. Said I would have to get it repaired and return for another check. I AAC Smog from a recomendation from a friend. The owner (Wing) greeted me, told me what to do before he tests it. I did those simple things and the car passed when I brought it in. Wow, I am happy I passed. He wore his mask, and wiped down his pen before letting me use it to sign off on documents, he wiped down my credit card and car keys. These little practices are really appreciated since COVID19. This place always gets you in and out. I usually get a call when my vehicle is finished but this most recent time I didn't, so I waited a bit longer than normal. When I came back on my own to pay, I noticed the large fish in a tank in the back right corner of the front office. He seems much too big for that tank, and he looked so lethargic. The water was dark green and slimy. I also noticed the floor was long unswept and the office was dusty. No real complaints about the service, but if they read this -- please take better care of that beautiful fish. It will also bring a lot of good energy into your space if you give it a good cleaning. read more

Date: 2/10/2016 Time: 2:15 PM 65° Sunny Car needed smog inspection done before renewing registration with DMV. My husband and I brought our vehicle in to get it done. Terrible that our car did not pass the smog test due to one minor issue - a liquid fuel leak. This location is located across the street from APD and convenient to the residents of Alameda. The service is quick and friendly. The mechanic told us once we get the repair done we can return for another smog test. The cost of the smog test and certificate of $40.00 was reasonable. Since I did a check in on yelp, there was a 10% discount offer. Certainly, I couldn't pass up on the offer. We shall return soon to get the smog job done, so we can get the DMV registration taken care of. read more

I went in for a Smog test after I had work done on my car that day. What I didn't know, is if you have work done on your car, the mechanic may reset the car computer and you will have to drive around for a while before you can pass smog. The smog tester guy walked up to me acting like I was suspicious and asked me why my car computer was wiped out. Like I did it on purpose or something. So I didn't pass smog and I got charged for a full smog test. And I was told I had to pay the full amount again when I came back and passed! Not only was their smog Test $20 more than the place I later went, the other place could not believe AAC Smog was going to charge me for a re-test! 2 more things I don't like about AAC Smog: one time I started to drive away then decided to look under the hood to make sure everything was intact. My entire engine cover was missing. I asked them what happened and they put the part back on, then proceeded to say to me about 10 times that it was just a "beauty" part. Every time they said it I was getting more annoyed. They brought 3 guys out to explain this "beauty part" crap. I've got a nice car so you damn well better put back on the beauty part you idiots. I can't believe I forgot about that and went back again! Next thing I don't like is they take a 6 foot long wooden stick and jam it onto the gas pedal while looking at the tailpipe for smoke. Very clever maybe but I didn't like the way they jammed it onto the gas. I watched the whole thing and it looked like that could scratch something and didn't look like it is what cars are made to do, which is jam a stick abruptly on the gas pedal. To the owner Wing - you sound very defensive in your reply. It would be better if you told us how you are going to improve. But you don't think you need to improve so that is all the more reason for me to never come back! And, unlike what you said, it is not true that you stopped me about my missing "beauty part," I looked under the hood myself because I had a odd feeling I should look under the hood and found out the part was missing. Thanks anyway I found another great place to do Smog in Alameda that is $25 cheaper, it's faster and they don't jam my gas pedal abruptly with a stick. read more

I don't know if something changed here but I've used them for smog check in the past with no problems. But my recent experience was really bad! First they over charged me by a lot! It was a older vehicle so I came into it knowing it might not pass but when I got there it was smooth and now it's not. I should of walked away when they gave me the quote but I was being lazy. Then they told me it would over an hour, I just assumed that was because they had other customers in front of me but my vehicle went straight in. As someone who has always worked on my own cars 45 minutes would be a long time to do a smog check but when I looked in at the 1 hour mark they had 2 guys running around my vehicle like chickens with they're heads cut off. At this point I knew something was going on. So when they came out to tell me they needed to do more work, I had to say no I'll pay you but I'm never coming back here again. read more

Had a great experience here; Wing, the owner, is extremely friendly, and told me everything to get prepared for the test for my elderly Toyota RV. AAC was recommended by 1701 Auto Care in Alameda, who I have also had exceptional experience with. I drove over to AAC unannounced on a Friday morning around 10am and was immediately serviced.The entire process took about 45 mins, so I hung out in the library across the street. Unless you know you are going to pass the smog check, don't go here. When I first went, my check engine light was on. Me, knowing little to nothing about cars, didn't think anything of it. Little did I know, this is an automatic fail sign. This place gave me a check anyway, and guess what? I failed it. Like they knew I would. Still charged me around $60, and when I found out the scam they pulled on me, I confronted them and they gave me some excuse about the "state told them they have to give a check no matter what" if the light is on or not. As if that is a law? Then they wanted to charge me another $42 for a recheck. No thanks. Do not go here if you can help it. read more

This place is a rip off. Sold me a used, off brand battery, wrong size for my car. They told me it was a new battery and charged me a bundle. Here is what happened: So, my car battery dies out down the Street from this place. We walked over to inquire about battery replacement and if they had the battery we needed. They said they could get the battery for us, it would take a few hours and would cost about $225. It seemed a little high, but we decided that it would be convenient to push the car there, 1/2 block away and we could catch a movie or grab a bite on Park. Anyway, we come back a few hours later, it's all done, we leave. 1YEAR LATER our battery dies again! I thought it was my car or the fact that we have a DVD player or that I run the A/C a lot? This time I look on Yelp to get a recommendation for battery replacement and find one a few blocks away, great reviews and it's open. We pull in, they check my car and tell me that I have a battery that was not the right size for my car, was not at all new and was some bizarre off brand that they had never even heard of, they were even surprised it had lasted this long!!! So, I get out my owners manual, because I'm not going to get burned again, these guys are giving me the correct battery, it's clearly new, it's $75 cheaper than the place in Alameda, has a 5 year warranty and I haven't had any trouble since. So, this place in Alameda is a f'ing scam! Don't trust them with your car, they clearly only care about the money they can get & have no integrity. read more

I've been going here for two years and my last experience convinced me to never go here again. GO TO WHITMORE'S AUTO SERVICE!!! REASON WHY: First time, brought my car in for smog check. They called me when it was ready and let me know it didnt pass. They showed me how to get it fixed and were helpful. Second time was not a good experience. First they didnt call when my car was ready. Was told it would take 20 minutes, 1.5 hours went by no call. Chalked it up to they were busy and went in. The cashier ignored me and continued to talk on a personal call. Someone finally came in and explained that the car didnt pass. My heart dropped. I asked why and was told it was because the check engine light came on. I asked for more information but was brushed off. Called Whitmore's Auto Service and they were AMAZING!!! They explained what might be the problem and gave me advice on other experts around the area that could help me fix it. They even said they would take a look at it and help out! Its a bit pricey but I thought it was worth it overall considering speed and convenience. The guys working told me I had a bad EGR valve which in turn failed the smog test but were very helpful in helping me find solutions to fix the problem. -2 stars because (1.)they left behind a wire of some sort in the electrical part of the engine which in turn (2.) caused me to almost stall out in front of a red light and make me replace the car battery with a new one. My mechanic replacing the battery found the wire which caused the problems. read more

My registration was due in April so I figured I didn't want to procrastinate. Woman over the phone coughed incessantly which was pretty gross but said there was no wait. Came here on a Friday afternoon and there was one car ahead of me. Ate my sandwich, played with my phone and next thing you know, car was done! The one guy that does the smog checks was very thorough. He checked my tires too and I asked him if I was leaking gas since it had a strong smell. Everything looked good and I was happy of course since I passed with flying colors. They're not a mechanic so you'd have to take your car elsewhere if you don't pass. $71 and they are STAR certified if you need it for registration. read more

Vivian greeted me and got the information quickly; they also made sure that I had driven the car and the engine was hot. Wing was so kind and apologetic when it did not pass. My Toyota has over 200K miles; but everything runs good. Unfortunately my catalytic converter was stolen like most of other 4 runners dilemma.
