This review is on behalf of my bf who came to the shop for a smog check. He initially went to another shop and was advised that since he recently changed the battery for his car, they couldn't do a smog check because replacing the battery cleared the computer's internal emissions readiness monitors. They said drive a few more miles (~100) and things should be okay. There was no charge for this. A few weeks later he goes to Smog Dog and the mechanic there said what the previous shop told him was bs, he implied they were incompetent and told him to leave the vehicle so they could do the smog test. He returns a few hours later and Smog Dog told him the exact same thing!!!! My issues: the first shop took my bf's contact info and told him almost immediately that they could not the smog check. There was no charge. Smog Dog was sooo confident that they could do the job that they didn't take his contact info, leaving him to wait several hours only to return and be informed that the job could not be done. These people had the audacity to still charge him $79!!!! .. gave the same advice as the previous shop AND told him if/when he returns (and they're able to do the smog check) they'll ONLY charge him an additional $30. This was a waste of time, a waste of money and terrible customer service. read more

The communication has been subpar. I've come to do my retest three times now and we'll have to come back a 4th time as their machine is down. I understand machines go down, but they told me to call in the interim to see if they would be there and to check if the machine was working and nobody answers and nobody returns my phone message. This has spent a lot of time and gas going back back-and-forth across Alameda checking in to see if they are present and open, and the machine is working, because they can't answer the phone or return a phone call I'm here again for the third time. I've asked twice if they can still use the $20 coupon and both Jorge and Lee who are technicians say no that it's not possible. But I told them that on this coupon it doesn't specify when it can be used so it's very misleading. And I would hope that after all my coming back-and-forth and back-and-forth and poor communication, they could be on the side of me the customer and offer the coupon. And then in the future, they can specify on the website that it must be used at the first testing.. They told me I would need to ask Carl, who is the owner. I asked how I can contact Carl and they can't give me that information. Instead, both have told me to call later but again they don't answer the phone or return phone calls. I'm very frustrated with the experience and may need to start seeking another smog service in the future . Update: after expressing my frustration with poor communication, the person at the smog shop made sure to answer the phone every time I called. Absolutely outstanding service! My Honda needed to complete the drive cycles so that I could pass smog due to replacing my battery. I took my car back to Smog Dog several times before the drive cycles cleared, and each time the shop checked my readiness prior to doing the smog or charging me. Went in to get a car smog the other day. There was only one person working but boy, was he QUICK!!! You can tell he has a routine down to manage a line of people (which there were). Our car smog only took 15 minutes tops. I didn't catch his name, but the employee was friendly and efficient. Look up coupons for this place online! They have a $20 coupon offer on their website that you need to mention (no need to print) when you get there, but I see there's also a $30 coupon out there so mention those! In all, our smog was $68 instead of $88. He even let us know places we could go to renew our registration instead of heading to the DMV. Definitely coming here again! read more
