We first visited Ab Astris by recommendation from Calais (another top pick winery) after our visit to Fredericksburg. So so happy we came! We ended up joining as members after we walked in and felt so welcomed as their family. Not to mention their reds are out of this world. We particularly love their Boudreaux blend. We also just experienced their members party and fell more in love with the estate. Even with the rain we had so much fun - hello picturesque rainbow. Splashy around in the rain with our daughter was so much fun! Not to mention the wine, food and live music. Do yourself a favor visit and enjoy everything Ab Astris has to offer. read more

Nice new winery in the Stonewall area. Nestled off the road in a beautiful country setting. We had a great tasting here. I plan to go back and spend more time just enjoying a glass of wine outdoors. Our favorite was the montepulciano which is a variety that I don't find at too many other Texas wineries. read more

Lovely property and great wine tasting experience. Family owned and run and we thoroughly enjoyed our service by daughter Kristen. Young vines so their wine is sourced from a W Texas vineyard. Good juice! We joined their wine club so that should tell you all you need to know! Looking forward to what their gonna put out when their grapes on property produce; looks promising! We left with a bottle of their rose' and the Montepulciano and we look forward to returning to pick up our wine club allotment in the Fall. Keep up the good work! read more

Had visited a few wineries, had room for 1 more drink. This place was 3 miles away so hit it up. They wouldn't sell us any wine by the glass, only a full bottle purchase or tasting. Nope, not in the mood for a long tasting, I know what I want and nope, not buying a bottle bc we all want something different. So we walked out, drove down the road to Hye Meadow and had an amazing time. The whole "our rules or nothing" for how I can taste your wine can kiss my fat @ss. Plenty of other choices. read more

My girlfriends and I decided to check this winery out (after having been to most of the other wineries in Fredericksburg over the years), so we wanted to try somewhere new. It's a bit off the beaten path from the main road, but really enjoyed the privacy and views. The indoor decor was absolutely stunning and the patio and outdoor seating looked really nice (it was cold so we stayed inside). The staff was super friendly and the wine was exceptional. I bought a bottle of the Tannat (was my favorite - can taste 5 wines for $15). The bottle prices are on the high end, but worth it. We all agreed it was our favorite visit of the day and we would 100% return. Highly recommend. read more

The older server with short brown hair and the younger server at this winery were incredibly rude. Right when we arrived the older server said "y'all can go sit outside". We then moved outside and told them we were freezing cold (it was 40 degrees) and asked if we could sit inside. The server then responded that they had wine tasters there and thought we would be too loud so she asked us to stay outside. The entire time we were freezing but decided to enjoy ourselves. Throughout the entire time we were at the winery they continued to ask us to leave and then the older server decided to take videos and photos of us. They close at 5pm and we were waiting for our ride to pick us up. Around 5:15 I personally went in and apologized to the older short brown hair server that our Uber wasn't there yet. She responded by saying "we've been waiting since 3 for y'all to leave" (we didn't arrive at the winery until after 3:45) at this point we felt very uncomfortable but continued to wait for our Uber that was running late. Eventually one of our group members noticed the older short haired brunette worker was taking photos and videos of us and when asked about it she said "I'm only sending it to my daughter". At this point we left feeling unwelcomed and uncomfortable. We began walking down the road trying to leave as quickly as we could. The owners and workers drove by and very rudely sent us off. Overall I would not recommend this winery to anyone. The staff was incredible rude, the wine was subpar at most, and the views were much better at every other winery we visited. The only thing this winery had going for them was their dog "buddy". Other than the dog save the trip and visit other places such as slate theory or signor. read more

This place surprised us on a recent visit to Fredricksburg. Small family owned winery that is very laid back and relaxing. All of their wines were very smooth and we ended up buying a few bottles. Would definitely go back and recommend anyone to stop here and check them out. read more

A server at another tasting room (Signor, also recommend!), told us about this winery. Family business and has just been open a few months. We're so glad we came! We tend to drink more reds but liked their whites, too. We ended up buying the Tribus, the Montepulciano, the Tannat, and the Tempranillo, plus we we went in on the wine club with our friends. Their backstory is great and they were so friendly. I wish we'd gone there our first day instead of on our way back to Austin - their patio is beautiful and it would have been nice to have a glass and relax! I highly recommend this place!! read more

Easily the worst of the four places we stopped on our wine tour. Beautiful quaint location but the wine was bad and the owners wife who was pouring our tasting seemed more interested in talking to her daughter and friend than giving us the time of day. We ended up asking our tour guide if we could head to our next stop early. Too much good wine and friendly service in this area to waste your time here. read more

We had a great first visit to Ab Astris! It is a beautiful property and they let us walk through the vineyards. The owners were very welcoming and the wines were all very good. We ended up taking 3 bottles home. We will be back in the future! This is a nice winery to visit and since not visible from 290 it's a bit quieter which is nice. read more

This family-owned boutique winery near the LBJ ranch exemplifies what love, hard work, and patience can bring to the Texas wine business. You'll have to take the "country road" off HWY 290, cross the river, and trek over a crushed gravel road, but it is well worth it! Once you arrive at the estate, you'll see their lush vineyard that is merely in its first year, a windmill, the fantastic tasting room, and the owners, Tony and Erin Smith, and possibly their daughter and son in law assisting for the day. The tasting room sits on the topographic high of their estate and is adjacent to the vineyard. You get a superb panoramic view of the country side and can immediately begin to relax and unwind. The Smith's have been working on this winery idea for about 8-10 years. They were fortunate to cross paths with the well-known John Rivenburgh (wine maker and vineyard consultant) to help them fulfill their dreams. The last three years is where everything has come together, and you'll see the results in the wine they are premiering on their tasting menu. The estate has about seven acres planted of Tannat, Souzão, and Clairette Blanche with plans to add Petite Sirah and Montepulciano. With over 20 acres on the property to expand upon, they are off to a good start. There are currently eight wines available for tasting with one more on the way! All white wines are 2017 and fabulous! The Solis is a Muscat/Roussanne blend with the lovely Roussanne notes adding a pleasant compliment to the citrus notes. There are two single varietal Roussannes allowing one to compare Texas High Plains and Texas Hill Country AVA fruit. The High Plans version features fruit from Reddy Vineyards with a rich aged golden color that is quite aromatic and loaded with pineapple notes. The Hill Country option features fruit from Hoover Valley and presents pronounced smooth buttery and honeysuckle notes. The Malvasia Bianca, is more floral with enticing peach flavor. The Smith's were wise to let the 2015 reds age a bit before releasing to allow a greater depth of flavor to develop with their maturity. The Montepulciano...wow! It is balanced with a smooth finish and a nice mouthfeel! The Tempranillo is sourced from Newsom Vineyards and shines with great qualities of tobacco, leather and a fine finish. Their Tannat proves Texas is where single varietal Tannat wines rule. It's bold, rich, yet smooth for a fabulous experience. The red list includes Tribus, which is a unique blend of Mourvedre and Malbec. It is well balanced and has great character featuring cherry and plum rich notes. We had the special pleasure of tasting the Ausonius, a future Bordeaux style blend of 40% Cabernet, 35% Merlot, and 25% Petit Verdot. This red will be the shining star of Ab Astris Winery! The notes, the mouth feel, the tannins...oh my! A future case worthy purchase that will only continue to get better with age. The tasting experience at this winery is memorable set back from the busy road, in a country side setting, amid trees on one side and the beautiful vineyard on the other. We hope to review each of these wines individually in the future. Tony and Erin's dedication to 100% Texas wines holds true. With John RivenBurgh's guidance, and their son-in-law Mike's passion of learning the wine making techniques, their future looks very bright. Excellent winery. As soon as you drive up you're greeted with a gorgeous vineyard and a cozy and inviting tasting room. The interior decorations were wonderfully selected and the outdoor space allows for the perfect setting in Texas wine country. The wine is exceptional as well. We especially enjoyed the Tannat and Tribus. Will be back here anytime we visit the Hill Country. read more
