!!! URGENT - PSA - what's going on here (witnessed today 7/27/2025) ANIMAL NEGLECT !!! I always strive to write positive reviews whenever possible, especially for non-profits & organizations that aim to help animals.. However, I visited this "rescue" today with my children, and I was absolutely appalled at what we saw! Wish I could give zero stars. Where do I begin.... For one- as soon as we stepped foot inside, we had to literally hold our breaths from the stench. The place is filthy-there is urine and fecal matter everywhere. And it only got worse as we walked around.. It's so overcrowded with way too many cats sharing small spaces. There is an obvious lack of necessary supplies like water and food -the cats are so skinny and clearly malnourished. The dogs don't appear healthy either and there are at least two sharing each cage, surrounded by urine and feces also. We felt so sorry for these poor animals and our hearts were breaking! :( One woman working there came to greet us. The other few staff/volunteers were either sitting down looking at their phones or in the back not helping. I wish these animals could all find loving homes, of course, but until then, it is the job of the shelter to properly care for them. The "United For Animals Rescue" is understaffed, under-equipped, and clearly do NOT genuinely care about the health and well-being of these needy animals! It's so very sad. I should have taken pictures, but the odor was so unbearable that we just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. All the positive reviews are from years ago. We have visited there in the past, and I remember it used to be great. Debating on adopting a cat, I noticed UFA rescue agency, which is a walkable distance from my house. UFA Rescue pet adoption agency provides a plethora of cats and a handful of dogs for potential adopters. However, upon entering, the overwhelming smell of dog urine detracts from the experience. Despite attempting to browse the selection of cats, the crowded space made it difficult to do so comfortably. Moreover, the lack of assistance from the staff, who seemed disinterested and unhelpful, further dampened the visit. Looking for a brochure, I went to the desk and gazed around the mess until I found one, as the two ladies that work there just stood and watched. No "hello," ....no "how may I help you?" ...nothing. The overall atmosphere left much to be desired, and unfortunately, this experience may deter future visits. read more

The animals appear neglected and are surrounded by feces, vomit, and urine. The entire place smells extremely bad. The odor was so strong that my clothes smelled even after I left. While I was there, the employee was on the phone talking about personal matters instead of paying attention to the animals or visitors. The staff were also very rude and unprofessional. I truly feel sorry for the cats living there, as several of them appeared sick. The conditions were very upsetting to see. read more

We are still on the hunt for a cat. They had a couple of small dogs and plenty of cats. There are a couple of caged rooms full of cats and about 3 people can enter the cage to see how all the cats act towards you. This set up is perfect for someone who wants to see multiple animals at one time. These cats didn't have collars so I am not sure how they vet each animal. The only indication that I had that separated feral from non was the nicked ear. I applaud them for the upkeep because it takes a lot to take care of the amount of animals that they had. read more

It's a rare experience to be able to share an hour or so with so many beautiful cats and dogs that are all neutered and desperate for love in some caring person's home. I've been to many no kill shelters, but this one is truly outstanding. The staff is so warm and generous with their love for these homeless animals. I have trouble holding back the tears when I see so many beautiful pets that only need a child or adult to befriend them. The care they receive here at the wait station is marvellous. So contacted this facility about a dog they had up for adoption. We did a video chat for house/yard tour, fenced in yard. We were asked questions about our age pretty much immediately. My wife and I are retired. Within minutes we knew the woman on chat was saying we were to old for a 12 week puppy. She will talk to her 'board' and search for an older dog "who would fit us better." Not sure of her or her 'boards' age?. So instead of letting a dog be raised by 2 retired people, it maybe given to 'younger' people who work all day. Dog will be in crate for hours, not cool. I believe in the vetting process but to be told we are to old after a 10 minute conversation is unprofessional in my opinion. Plus this dog adoption fee is $650.00. Not cheap, but we were more than happy to pay fee for that puppy. We moved on to another rescuer and got our dog 2 days. Adoption fee = $250.00. Age is just a number some people just do not know what respect is.... read more

Being ignored by a pet adoption place...I guess I can check that off my list of things I will never let happen again. Last year, I submitted an application for a 4-5 month old puppy, Superman, that was the same breed as my current dog that I've had since she was 3 months old. Unfortunately at the time I was asked to do an interview, I was not a headspace to take on another responsibility due to unforeseen circumstances. This year, however, not only can I finanically and mentally take care of a puppy and my trained, independent dog, but I have the time and dedication to so that I didn't have last time. I submitted another application, which by the way- is incredibly long and I don't necessarily think all the questions asked are relevant to adopting an animal...But anyways, I was reached out to the next day by Debbie, a volunteer I guess. We set up a virtual home visit- this is the same woman I spoke with briefly the year before about adopting Superman. I was living with another person at the time, so I understood they would need to be present for the interview, but my god, she did not make it easy and had a not so pretty attitude when I got on for the interview and was unable to reach my partner at the time. I apologized to her, saying I was unsure of what was happening as it was agreed upon the both of us- me and my partner- that we were ready for a puppy...matter of fact, we were looking forward to it. The takeaway I got from the less than 10 minute interview with her where she deemed me "ineligible" because my partner was not available last minute and continued to ask me questions that I already answered on the application. It seemed suspicious to her that I was a 25 year old who has been living on her own and took in my first dog as a puppy when I was 20, own my place myself, and have always been financially capable of taking care of the dog. She seemed baffled and unconvinced...as if I needed to convince her that a 25 year old is actually responsible...She did disclose that she was going to be crabby during the meeting due to her having COVID...my thing is, if you're sick, why would you willingly schedule a home visit, virtual that takes 30-45 mins to complete, and proceed to be a complete nasty individual who seems to stereotype regarding age...ageism basically. There was no pressing deadline and I would've been happy to reschedule if she told me straight up she was sick. But the fact that she made it seem like I inconvenienced HER while she was sick...granted my partner not showing up last minute was unexpected...she had no empathy and was very unpleasant. I knew by the end of it, she wasn't going to give me the opportunity to take this potential puppy home. Moral of the story- Debbie, you had a nasty attitude and didn't have enough courtesy to respond to my messages the days following our failed attempt to do a virtual home visit, although I apologized profusely and tried to schedule another time. I can't control other people, however I WAS PRESENT and fully prepared. That being said, if you can't communicate and don't feel well enough to conduct a proper interview, don't treat the customer as if it's their fault that YOU decided to get out of your sick bed to conduct an interview on a Sunday evening...no one told you to do that, so the nasty unwelcoming attitude was completely unnecessary, as was you not responding to my follow up texts to see when we could reschedule. She never even gave me a chance and I knew that puppy would've been a great addition to my little family. If I'm paying $650 for adoption, I'd expect you to treat your potential customers with a little more respect. I'm very capable and responsible of handling myself, my dog and my household, regardless of age. If anything, my profession should've been more of an incentive for me to be able to adopt the puppy. Anyway, they've lost a potential customer and I would rather not be stereotyped, interrogated and criticized from someone who can't even communicate effectively. I had half a mind to walk into the place to see if I could speak to someone else (that's how bad I wanted this dog), but decided against it because I won't give this adoption agency anymore of my time beyond leaving this review. Just be careful when communicating with this agency...and don't get your hopes up...even though the animals should be the priority, it seems they're very inappropriately selective on who adopts what (also from the other reviews in addition to my own). read more

Had a great experience here. Started on petfinder and they responded right away even though they were closed Monday. Filled out application abs Tuesday debra called to get me approved. She gave great tips and even followed up after we adopted. The shelter is small but the cats seem very cozy and content. We stayed a long time and it was hard to choose. But Wyatt chose us and the process went smooth and easy. He came home happy, healthy and clean. They have cats of all ages so please go or donate. Great experience. read more

My daughter and I took a dying cat that we found into united for Animal Rescue in Margate and was treated so horribly there with my young daughter who found the cat and thought that a rescue would be the right place to bring it to. We were yelled at and belittled and were told to give money were they couldn't do anything. We were then kicked out so rudely and she said she wasn't going to do anything to the cat until the next day but the cat is suffering so badly in a box that she took from me after demanding money from me. I will be posting pictures and recorded audio we took inside and the facility was a complete disaster. I was told there was a vet there on premises but that unless I paid I better take the cat and leave. I believe it was the owner who we saw tonight at United for animals, who is surely not a rescuer or lover of animals. So sad and everyone needs to know ! read more

UFAR is truly a godsend. In the last 4 months my family has fostered 3 kittens for them, my mom adopted one and my partner adopted a puppy. Viviane knows every single animals entire history and can match up families with animals that are perfect for them. Throughout my weeks going back and forth to the rescue, I got many opportunities to see her and her team in action and can speak to the entire process, from fostering to adoption, home visits, and volunteering. I highly recommend them for all of the above. They take in every animal, without discrimination. They take the sick, the elderly, and spend thousands on their care. I've seen them save senior Yorkies with health complications, rowdy dogs that they trained and tamed, and place kittens in the right foster homes for socialization to get them ready for adoption. I really can't recommend them enough. They took one of our former fosters to the emergency vet on a weekend, no questions asked, no worries about what it would cost them, as soon as they saw she wasn't acting properly or eating due to an issue with her teeth. Everything they do, they do out of love. If you're looking for somewhere to volunteer, looking to foster, or looking to adopt, they can set you up for success! read more

This is a great animal rescue in Margate. We had been looking for a poodle for about a year since the start of the pandemic and found ours here on Petfinder. We went through the interview process by submitting an application and doing a FaceTime with one of the directors, and picked up the dog the same day. The place is very clean and efficiently run, with high turnover rate on the animals, they don't keep them in there very long. Animal got all shots and they even assisted with finding a vet to do the neuter inexpensively. Highly recommended. read more

About 3 weeks ago we walked in wanting a pet we signed up never heard back went back in 3 days later gave them our name and phone number never heard back went BACK in to ask why we weren't getting messages. They said Debra or what ever her name is would call us because she "forgot " Okay she called us the next day. The interview was a whole interrogation on why they shouldn't give us the pet. After all this waiting she said "i'm sending it to corporate we will get back to u " ITS BEEN 4 DAYS all this waiting for what??? To get a cat that was on the street and needs a home. UFAR is a no kill animal shelter in Margate Florida. I've volunteered in many shelters and this one far exceeds all the others I've ever been to. Everybody there goes above and beyond for the animals. They give 110% of their effort. These are the kindest, most caring group of people I've ever been around. The animals come before anything. even when it's full to capacity, they will not turn any dogs away. They find a way to make it work. The only thing missing from this equation is funding. While I can appreciate the work they are doing for so many cats and dogs, I am a little disappointed in this facility. I applied to adopt a kitten and when I got home with her and read her medical papers, I learned that she had tested positive to FIV... there was no mention that she has those disease neither during the virtual call nor during the in person meet. I feel like they have so many animals, they want to rid of as many as they can. I am still going to keep the kitty, I just wish the facility and its employees had been more honest from the start. read more

I've worked for and volunteered with many different animal rescues in south Florida. UFAR is without a doubt the best one in so many waYs. Home to about 200 kittens and cats, none of which are kept in small metal cages but instead are in huge enclosures with about 10-15 cats per enclosure. Each enclosure has at least one cat tree, couches, hammocks, multiple litter boxes and one even has an exercise wheel. These homeless cats have genuinely great lives living at UFAR, compared to other rescues that keeps their cats in small cages, alone, having to eat right next to their litter boxes (which felines hate) barely getting any exercise or socialization. The owner, Viviana will go out of her way to help any animal, even taking in abandoned kittens and surrendered cats despite not having the space. She will find a way to make space even if that requires desperate measures. Also, there is room for a small amount of dogs and usually UFAR will have at least 1 dog ready to be adopted. Frequently, the dogs end up at UFAR because they got lost. The time I spent employed here I witnessed about 6 lost dogs come into the rescue and was lucky enough time watch them all be reunited with their grateful owners. The high success rate of reuniting lost pets with their owners is 100% a result of the extremely dedicated efforts Viviana requires all staff/volunteers to do, as well as her own hard work. Even if you're not looking To adopt at this time, do yourself a favor and just stop by the rescue. Nobody is going to try and convince you to adopt or act like an obnoxious, pushy salesperson. You'll be able to enter all the enclosures and hang out with the cats, who usually are so excited to have visitors that they all swarm at once to say hello. It will make a bad day become a wonderful one and at the same time will make the cats so happy. Anybody struggling with life or are feeling down should definitely stop by, these cats are the best therapy. they've known sadness, loneliness and confusion at some point during their lives just like humans. My hope is for word to spread about how incredible UFAR is, as not many people know about it. Which is very upsetting and actually harms the animal rescue community in south Florida. I say this with absolute certainty and know for a fact that UFAR truly has the potential to end animal homelessness, if only they had the funds to do what would be needed. This starts with more exposure and more people hearing about it. read more

If I could give this place no stars I would. Where do I begin. I filled out an adoption application on Wednesday 08/25 and never once heard back. I understand that if certain pets get adopted that's one thing. But not returning phone calls/ emails or even Instagram DM's us very unprofessional. Between Wednesday and today 08/29 I've called 6 times, sent 3 emails and 1 direct message. As I current pet owner that wanted to welcome/provide a home for another animal I'm angry, upset and hurt by this. Not to mention they're quite of few cats with upper respiratory infections there. As a veterinary technician it didn't sit well with me that I noticed 5 kittens with green/yellow discharge coming from their noses. Whomever is running this shelter, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. Adopting our potential pets that can be sick and spread this infections to other pets. By mindful when coming into this place. Last but not least I felt racially profiled. After we left the watched us leave and locked the door behind us. I will NEVER step foot in this place again. You get one star because it's no kill place. The lady inside there was useless, she couldn't provide us with any useful information. She didn't even apologize did the lack of communication. When we came in on Wednesday she knew we had no chance of adopting any puppies. I honestly see why people pay money for dogs. Because they don't want to go through the headache of adopting through organizations like this. read more

This rescue puts the cats first. All my cats have been rescues and this was the first recue that actually interviewed me & my home via FaceTime! I thought it was wonderful that they took the time to see who & where their rescues were going to live prior to adoption. This made me confident that they made sure their volunteer fosters were top notch. Their space in Margate is so clean & it's nice to see how the cats interact with each other and with people. Thanks to this amazing rescue I found my forever friend. My fiancé and I found our dream pup through pet finder and found out he was at this center for adoption. This animal rescue is very sweet and thorough with making sure these babies go to a great home. Within a couple days we were able to go get our sweet boy. They helped us get everything set up for him as far as vaccines & neutering, food & toys even. They even have a vet & can get heartworm & flea & tick meds when you need.
