My mother and I signed up to take this course with hopes it would provide a safe and supportive learning environment; however, we were very disappointed by the conduct of the instructor, Chris C., assigned to our group. He arrived 20 minutes after having to call one of the students in the course to come get him. Before beginning the course, Chris was adamant that after 3 drops of the motorcycle, we are forced to reschedule which was odd considering the price we paid coupled with the fact that we heard from two different people who have taken the course previously that this had not been a rule during their previous course. Drops understandably happen during early training. Unfortunately, my mom and I ended up dropping twice during the first day and were both told we had to reschedule. Chris showed zero concern for how we were doing physically or emotionally after each drop. Rather than offering any advice to correct our errors, his focus was entirely on the paperwork related to the incident. When attempting to seek clarity or assistance, he made it clear that he did not have time to help individuals due to the size (8). His tone was dismissive and belittling, it felt as if completing the class well ahead of schedule was more important to Chris than ensuring all students were learning safely or feeling supported. As beginners, we signed up for this course expecting patient guidance. We did not anticipate being brushed off or made to feel like a burden. I truly believe in the value of the MSF program and the mission of promoting safe motorcycling. But this experience left us both shaken and discouraged. Our hope is that the instructor, Chris' conduct be reviewed and consider reinforcing with all instructors the importance of empathy, communication, and individual support-especially for new riders. read more

The Basic Rider Course (with license testing) was well worth my time! The two instructors were experienced and knowledgeable. We covered a lot of ground in two days with several hours on the bikes. We did many drills which vastly increased my confidence; not just in basic bike handling but advanced maneuvers such as tight turns, quick stops, controlling the bike using clutch "friction zone", countersteering to swerve, handling a rear-wheel skid and more. Instructor feedback was useful and we were given opportunities to learn from our mistakes and try again. I would recommend this class to anybody who wants to get their motorcycle endorsement. read more

ABATE of Colorado - Spring 2023 training class got snowed on! - Community Service/Non-Profit Near Me - Aurora, Colorado

They say lightning usually does not strike twice. However, in my son's case, it does. At 14 1/2 he had a great driving instructor. Fast forward to being 15 1/2 and taking ABATE of Colorado's Motorcycle Safety Training course. Due to my son's learning disability, I was able to sit in the class with him, and WOW what an AMAZING experience. Terry Lee was our instructor! There are not enough words to describe Terry. Caring, Fun, Compassionate, Stupendous on a motorcycle, and overall, the gem of ABATE of Colorado Motorcycle safety! Terry strives to make the class fun, which makes all participants want to learn! While on the range, he explains the parties (ok, they are really called exercises) in a way that all riders have a firm foundation of what is expected. I know it weighs heavy on Terry's heart and mind when a rider needs to be counseled; however, he wants to make sure all riders are always safe. I am blessed beyond words that my son was able to learn from Terry. Please if you are thinking about riding, please contact ABATE and make sure to get a class taught by Terry Lee BEFORE you set out! I wish I could leave two reviews - one for the quality of the motorcycle training and one for the quality of the instructors. I took my ABATE MOST class several years ago and had an awesome experience. Carol Downs was my instructor and she was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and a very experienced rider. Very focused on safety and helping students learn. Fast forward to last weekend (9/26) and my minor son took the class from Kevin. What a shit show this was. While my son did learn and passed the written and riding tests, Kevin used the ABATE classroom as his personal political platform. Ranting for hours both days about COVID being a hoax, anti-gun control, anti-abortion, anti-liberal media, anti-muslim . . . it was like having Rush Limbaugh as your motorcycle safety instructor. As a student, no one is going to debate the instructor that holds the fate of their pass/fail in his hands. Absolutely unacceptable for Kevin to use the ABATE classroom as his personal platform. Five star if you get someone like Carol as your instructor. Zero star if you get a Kevin. read more

Motorcycle class - one of the funnest things i have done in a very, very long time! I've driven past the ABATE motorcycle classes (in the Lowry campus) for at least two years thinking "Man, that totally looks like fun" and realizing that if i ever needed to jump on a motorcycle during a high speed action-chase (a-la Jason Bourne - "The Bourne Supremacy") I had better take that class one day. Classwork starts the night before for three hours. Maximum class size is 12 people. There is another 3-4 hour session on Saturday afternoon which includes taking your multiple choice test (the instructors drill the answers into you - everyone passed). The driving itself - oh so much fun. You are assigned either a Honda Rebel 250 or Nighthawk 250. There is one dirt bike for the tallest guy or gal in the class. The instructors start you off very slow and before you know it you are in first gear cruising around the parking lot. The class gets harder on Sunday as you learn to negotiate curves, press and lean, and make tight U-Turns. The grand finale is the ridden evaluation which you have practiced over and over again. Be sure not to drop your bike (immediate fail) or leave your kickstand down (like - minus 15 points). The instructors i had (Doug and Cindy) were great - Cindy was friendly and understanding, Doug sometimes tows a hard line when you screw up, but then rewards greatly with a pat on the back if you do well. By the end of the class all participants had totally bonded and a lot of us went out for beers afterwards to celebrate our passing and discuss the test. What a blast. If you are thinking about getting a motorcycle or are just curious to learn how to drive one - take this class! It is SO MUCH FUN. Added bonus - passing means the riding and written portion of the Colorado motorcycle license test are waived and you can get your motorcycle endorsement on your license that much easier. A great weekend and payoff for $225. read more

I definitely would NOT recommend the Basic Riders Course to anyone with minimal or no riding experience! The instructors were seasoned Harley riders and so their patience with novice riders was severely lacking and they made no bones about showing it! One of the instructors in particular was very forthright in showing his frustration when a rider did not complete the maneuver on the first try! The bikes are small (like in most basic rider courses) but they are well worn and a few had mechanical issues throughout the weekend. I chewed up my left boot pretty good by the end of the class on Sunday from just shifting gears as the padding on the gear shift was almost non-existent. Sure the class is inexpensive but if you are new to riding or have minimal experience, I highly recommend spending the extra money and going somewhere else. Patience and empathy are not these instructors forte. read more

(FYI - This is a review of ABATE's Motorcycle class, not ABATE itself) I haven't taken any other motorcycle class, so I can't compare, but this was great. The class is 2 days and one night, most of it riding. The class was very student involved - we read and discussed and the instructor's provided input as needed. The riding was absolutely a blast, a great time (though very demanding) and I'd recommend it even if you don't plan on riding. The class taught me first the risks involved in motorcycling - something you should be very aware of. It went through many ways to reduce those risks, including deciding if the risk is something you're OK with. The class material was very good and not overboard at all. The riding taught the most important skills you need to ride, and I feel 100% comfortable that I will be in a good place to get a bike and start practicing. If you are going to do it, be prepared to be focused on the class and nothing else from beginning to end. You can't be late or leave early, you must be there 100%. and it was absolutely a blast! It was really fun and I had a great time (an equal mix or education and just plain fun). 12/16/2010 update: I bought a bike end of October. The class was worth it. Applying techniques they taught has made it so much easier than it would have been. I am planning on taking the Intermediate level class in the Spring. 03/21/2011 update: Just completed the Intermediate experienced Rider course yesterday. Once again, the instructor was great (and amazing what he could do on his Goldwing). It is a one day and basically covers the same skills as the Basic Rider but with most of the time spent practicing and getting instruction. The big thing from this class was knowledge of what areas I really need to practice. Will probably do this again next year. read more

This organization is a joke. I signed up for their course back in 2017. I was unfortunately incarcerated and could not make the course. They will not honor a refund. My bank cannot reverse the charge due to the age of the transaction. You have to love companies who just take your hard earned money without providing you a service/product. I took a 2 day monocycle training and safety class over the weekend. It was hot and got a little long, but it feels so good to finally have it behind me and the experience gained was critical for hopping finally and legally on my wonderful Vespa Scooter. ABATE Colorado was where I took my training; the folks who showed up were an eclectic bunch, mostly very kind and supportive. The instructors (Bob and Mark) were smart, calm, and thorough (obviously very experienced riders.) They went above and beyond to answer our concerns and questions. I did things on the Honda scoot they provided that I never would have purposely done on my own bike. I highly recommend this class for anyone thinking about being on 2 wheels. Now I have a waiver to present to the Colorado DMV. Learning that 80% of the folks that do the driver portion at the DMV fail on their first attempt made it even sweeter. Yes, I did take a little crap for being the only one on a scooter! A bit of rockers vs mods attitude (I kept my mouth shut... mostly). The only way they could have improved this class would have been to gear it to scooter use (about a quarter of the class was motorcycle exclusive {gears etc}, leaving me to twiddle my thumbs while everyone worked on those things.) With tighter handling, faster response, and truly urban driving conditions I could have benefitted from a few more hours of defensive maneuvering (a few less on the open road.) read more

Let me start by saying I am rating theBasic Riders Class conducted at the Colorado Springs Range, at the greyhound track. My wife and I both attended this class. Let me say this definatly gets a full 5 star rating. Our instructors where Don Gunn and Scott Staeben (hope I spelled it right). These two gentlemen are what instructors strive to be. They kept us safe, provided us humor and a great block of instruction to give the basics for what we need to get started, and showed ushow to stay safe, and reduce risk on the road. These guys are VERY WELL qualified to teach. Tom a retired Motorcycle cop and motorcycle cop instructor and Scott who Harley-Davidson originally hired to audit the instructors have a combined almost 80 years of riding. They are increadably patient and will make sure you get the instruction you need. This was my experiance, my wife seconds it, but take a weekend (call to find out you instructors) go try it yourself. I took the 2-day BRC course at Red Rocks Community College. Mark was our instructor in a class of 6. He's a great teacher and very accommodating and patient. I was terrified of motorcycles prior to taking the class. I was afraid of flying over the handlebars, dropping it at a stop light. 2 days later: I'm still terrified of motorcycles, but it's more of a respect for the power and danger of motorcycles. I'm in the market for my first bike now that I have the confidence to ride. read more

One of the best things you could ever do, even if you don't ever plan on riding. The course gives you a better understanding of what bikers go through while riding in traffic. I took the two day course at Arapahoe Community College, we had two male instructors who were probably in their late fifties. I had zero experience before I attended the first day of class and came from a background where I had covered numerous serious motorcycle accidents. Still, I loved Harleys and Indians and wanted to learn to ride. One of the instructors was outstanding, very patient and worked with me to improve my skills. The other instructor however, was short tempered, very impatient and rarely, if ever, offered me advice to improve - only criticism of what I did wrong. Unfortunately, 50% of the instruction team made for a very uncomfortable weekend. After what seemed a very long... long... long weekend, I worked on my own to better my riding skills and went somewhere else to get my endorsement. The motorcycles used in the course are small 250cc's like most places. However, these are not in the best of shape. There were several mechanical problems and I sliced one boot up just shifting gears because there was no rubber left on the gear shift. If you have been riding already and just want to take the class to save money on your insurance then this is the place for you. If you're new to riding though, spend the extra money and take a riders safety course somewhere else. read more

I recently took the course: this was my experience that I emailed to them.- There was only one instructor per the 8 of us and he did a poor job of teaching. Terry Lee told me to shift into second gear and then immediately told me to slow down in a panicked manner and I tipped the bike on my leg and it spilled gasoline all over me. When I sought a refund, a lady named Deb, who would not disclose her name and told me and I quote, "We can give you a half refund if you promise that the issue stops here and you speak no more of it." I had a real problem with this and told her that what she had told me both sounded immoral and ILLEGAL. She then started to cuss at me when I spoke up about the situation without profanity, she continued to use profanity with me until she eventually hung up. This has disturbed me deeply and I will continue to pursue this and speak out about this until action has been taken against this, Deb, and Terry Lee's safety standards have been reviewed. I will bring this up verbally with OSHA and the BBB. I will also share my review online with potential people who have not yet taken your course and are interested. read more
