Abel Pet Clinic is conveniently located off Laguna Boulevard in the Laguna West area near interstate 5. Parking is pretty easy to find in the strip shopping center they're located in. It's never fun to have to take your beloved animals to the vet when they're under the weather, but they did a wonderful job. Appointments can be made online or over the phone. Like most places, they charge a new patient deposit of $50 to hold your appointment and it's credited towards your first bill. We saw Dr. O'Neil and she did a great job explaining things in a timely fashion and helping us nurse our kitty Mario back to health after he came down with flea dermatitis after our over the counter flea application stopped working. It led to some pesky hot spots that were likely infected. She recommended antibiotics, a steroid, a topical mousse, and a prescription only flea treatment, Revolution Plus. The antibiotics could be via injection or oral, and we opted for the shot to get it over with since we had to administer the steroid orally. Her treatment plan wasn't overly aggressive and we found it to be fair and reasonable. The prescription only flea treatment works worlds better than the FrontLine ever did and it's not terribly expensive, particularly if you purchase the six month treatment box. They were kind enough to call us the following day to check in to see how he we responding to treatment which meant a lot. All of the staff including the front desk and assistant were very empathetic, kind, pleasant, and professional. Thankfully our boy has responded very well to treatment thus far and we won't hesitate to take him or his brother or sister in should we need to. read more

My dog was staying with my mon in Sacramento and she noticed how badly a hot spot had gotten. Her cats go here and she was able to get Soni into an appt. If you are considering this clinic or a current client read carefully. I NEVER write reviews. I had already moved on until I came home and received one of the most unprofessional letters I have ever received telling me they would be dropping me and to find someone else. I had been a client longer than anyone who works there. It is a shame seeing what this clinic has become. They show no willingness to work with you and a lack of compassion. I know 3 coworkers who have left there, also. I found Dr. Byam in 2013 when my cat started limping, and I found a lump in her hip. She saw her immediately. Even though she literally was banned from all clinics because of her behavior, she saw her. She was the only person my cat never had a problem with. We had to put her to sleep. Everyone was amazing. The previous fall, a cat showed up on my doorstep. Since I had a great experience, I took him to Dr. Byam and got him checked out and vaccinated. Later on, he developed crystals. After hospitalization, he was put on Hills CD wet and dry. They will only work with the online pharmacy they contract with, Yes they get kickbacks. I chose a pharmacy that offer a 10% veteran's discount plus 5% autorenewal discount. During Covid, Hills CD wet became nearly impossible to find. When my pharmacy and their pharmacy was out, that's when I found they were overcharging by charging by the can instead of by the case price. Dr. Byam agreed to match their pharmacy price. Eventually we moved to traditional wet and Hills CD Kibble. They also recommended a topper that retails for $30 and wanted to charge $50. This brings on my dog I got before Covid. He is hyper (Aussie) and injured his leg playing. I called to get him in, and they said they wouldn't take him for 5 days. No one else was taking new patients, so I waited. I got a prescription for his leg and got enough from them to get by. Double the price for 1/2 the pills. When the prescription was lost, my pharmacy called. They refused to work with them. When they called me back, they said they have never seen such an uncooperative and unsympathetic clinic. Dr. O'Neill never apologized for not seeing him immediately. Just said he should have been seen, but still refused to work with the pharmacy. Come to today. My cat has been going to them for 12 years. Never missed an appointment. His prescription was expiring and I was going out of town for an extended period of time. I tried to make an appointment for October 17th when I returned but needed to get his food. They wouldn't unless he was seen the 4th. Never had this issue before. They told me to find someone else. I did. They looked at his records, gave a cursory exam, worked with my pharmacy, scheduled an appointment for 10/17, and didn't even charge me. read more

I took my two cats in for routine checkups and vaccinations...it was going to be $900 for the exams and shots...WHAT? Now they won't fill a prescription for my dog that another vet wrote for him. I had to bring my chihuahua in after a visit to the emergency vet. They were accommodating with scheduling and so nice and understanding on the phone and in the visit itself. All they care about is money, adding extra tests, spacing things out so you have to come in for multiple appointments which have fees. The new vets are not compassionate and are very quick. Then they send the vet tech in to do the real bidding. They make them go back and forth with cost. You don't want to do $500 in testing, sorry the doctor won't write the prescription your dog needs and has been on for 8 years. Can I talk to the doctor? No sorry. Awful experience every time. We had not been long time clients of Abel Pet Clinic. Probably well over a year. But our dog had allergies so we were there every few months. We knew something was wrong with are 10.5 year old lab Squash in late July. We took him in and after close to a $1,000 in blood work, xray etc. we were then referred to Vista Veterinary Specialist. At Vista Squash had ultra sounds and was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. I called Abel to make sure they could get his paperwork. NEVER DID MY HUSBAND NOR I HEAR FROM ABEL PET CLINIC AGAIN. We had to put Squash down on 9-11-2020 and we chose to take him to Vista where they have a remarkable staff and treated us so kindly till the end. Very expensive and after they are done draining your wallet, they will make a zillion appointments for your pet, so they can charge you more money on every appointment. We have gone to Abel Pet Clinic for years, but they have no loyalty to loyal customers. We brought our cat in bec she was in pain, twice, once in the spring and once in the summer, for the same issue. The summer appt cost $1000. Plus we were NOT given an estimate prior to getting the bill, they kept saying they dont know what it will cost. After layoffs and covid, that price really hurt. it is far more than I make in a month of work as a aid for disabled children in school. Yet, in Nov. when she showed the same symptoms, and they had no avail. appts for a week, they just said they couldnt see her, take her to emergency. I asked for an antibiotic or other meds, since she was showing the same symptoms, and I know when I have a repeat bladder infection and my human dr. has no available appts, he will prescribe the meds, instead of making me wait a week. But Abel said "no, we don't do that." The receptionist had no sympathy, did not recommend other vets, just rushed off the phone. I took our cat to the emergency at Mueller, and after $600 of tests they said the cat has, 'feline idiopathic cystitis' which mimics bladder infection but there is no infection, no white blood cells in urine. So most likely after $1000 worth of tests, Abel pet clinic got it wrong. I will not be back--not because of the expensive mistakes, but because of the utter focus on money, not on solving my cat's painful problem. They should've offered some kind of help, pain meds, or antibiotics to hold her over until they could see her, and the receptionist should have shown an iota of heart. It was obvious she didn't care what we did, we just could not go to Abel. read more

After several troublesome miscommunications with the staff at Abel Pet Clinic, we're done and finding a new office. During this last visit, after receiving a surprisingly high bill for routine bloodwork to check kidney function on two cats, I questioned the amount with the staff member, noting that the price was much higher than last time, and that "this visit is just a 6-month follow-up to check the BNP." She pointed to word "BNP" on the form, and indicated that the prices had increased, but that the lab ordered was "to check the kidneys." I grimaced, signed, and paid. Today, when I received the lab results by email, it wasn't just done "to check the kidneys." They had ordered (non-itemized on my estimate) a full health panel including a BNP, CBC, thyroid, urinalysis-- the works. I had asked a clarifying question, got an incorrect answer, and today, the clinic's response is that they'll "work on that," and to my comment about extortion and predatory business practices, that they're sorry I feel this way, but that I did sign the paper. If you insist on taking your pets here (which I don't recommend), you'll need either a full wallet or a high baseline of veterinary/hematological knowledge, and enough self-advocacy to question everything to the T. read more

Everyone has been wonderful with the care of my cat and dog. Everything is clearly explained, and I feel that both pets get exceptional care. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and they really seem to care for me and my animals. Before they were my vet, the staff was wonderful about helping with a stray dog I found. Now, they help with both routine and not so routine services for my personal four-legged family members. They would be well worth an extra cost, but are actually reasonably priced. And do not use high pressure techniques. The website is also full of information, and helpful. read more

SUCH A JOKE. Just took my PUG...a 20 pound pug here because my husband and I needed help getting a tick off of his paw. If you have any knowledge on pugs you know that they don't like their paws or teeth being touched at all and require a special way of being handled. Upon booking my last minute appointment the front desk told me they handle a lot of pugs and they know how they are. The vet tech was terrible, I am actually wondering if it was his first day on the job, he kept trying to force checking my dog to perform their check up that he didn't even need which rattled up my dog even more. He kept trying to force him to look at his teeth, and kept giving him treats when I told the VT countless times to just hold it and asked him to STOP. The VT ignored my request and continued to aggravate my pug. Then comes the vet (old man) who is SCARED of my pug. I can't even tell you this guys name because he never introduced himself, he literally walked in and instead of trying to calm the animal he decided off the bat that my dog was bad. He sees him for literally one second and asks the vet tech to PUT A MUZZLE ON MY 20 LB PUG...who mind you has never bit a person in his life. It was pretty clear my dog couldn't breath for the 30 seconds he had this muzzle on since his nose and mouth were covered but they kept telling me he's fine. It was horrifying. I was so disgusted, I told them to take the muzzle off of my dog, and I left. I paid a $50 for a check up that my pug didn't even get and he still has a tick or bump at his paw that was NEVER EVEN LOOKED AT. This place is a JOKE, their VT & VET have HORRIBLE/NO table side manners, and I truly feel like they don't really care for the animals since it's so easy for the vet especially to decide that an animal is harmful without even trying to pet him or comfort him. I believe it's really important and hard to find a place that CARES for animals more than they care about the money they are getting from the services. This place is not one that cares about animals. They care about money. They clearly hire based off of what's on paper verses hiring good people and they flat out LIE about their ability to work with pugs. I am completely MORTIFIED after the experience I had at this office and will make sure all of the people I know with pugs and/or other animals never step foot in this place. Don't waste your time or money with this horrible business. They DO NOT care about your animal, they care about money. They lie about their abilities and will say whatever you want to hear to get you in. I can't get my experience here out of my head, I am traumatized with how they treated my sweet pug. read more

This place has horrible employees. One of their lady who picks up the phone. Her name is LaCreasha. She will never listen before cutting me off. In good intentions I wanted to pay the VCP plan off in installments and only owe a little over $200. Unfortunately she does not have a clue in trying to work with me but continue to beat around the bushes with me by having me do this and do that and that's not what I want. She and Jen literally told me the last time I spoke to the both of them that I would have to pay them. So I called in trying to work things out and I asked her that I would like to speak to someone other than her. Again she's justifying her own behavior at me.. being rude and cutting me off again. She asked if I'd like to speak to Jen and I responded please. She placed me on hold for a few minutes, came back on and says that Jen can return my call but it will have to be tomorrow. Unfortunately they want to continue delaying. I have to say this!! This vet clinic is rated in good quality however her employee has to change their attitude and increase their level of customer service. I'm frustrated with the behavior. Wish I can give you no stars. Once I pay you guys off I'm never coming back to even ask for your god dang service. I am a first time puppy dad to an adorable 2 month old Chihuahua puppy named Ziggy. I had been looking for a vet near by my work and chose to stop by Abel. I couldn't be happier with my choice! From my first call to them to schedule an appointment, i immediately felt welcomed, and excited to bring in Ziggy. They made sure that I was fully informed and ready for my first appointment by sending me everything I need to know in an email. The weekend availability made them an obvious choice since I work Monday through Friday. (no issues scheduling all of Ziggys follow up appointments on the weekend.) When I showed up, I was taken care of and taken into a room within 10 minute of being there, which is great since I was early for my appointment. ALL of the staff was welcoming, and made both Ziggy and I feel right at home. They all seemed genuinely interested in knowing more about Ziggy and I. After my visit, I left feeling informed, and ready to help Ziggy live his best, happy and healthy life. I am so grateful to have chosen such a great place for Ziggy. As an update, Pearl passed shortly after the change to an osteoarthritic. Being on the steroid at the same time, as the doctor suggested, not only caused her to no longer walk, but also damaged her digestive system and caused extensive ulceration. I went to see Dr.Kelly because m friend suggested her. The office is not big and fancy, but it is clean and the staff are friendly. Dr. Byam spent a lot of time explaining what she would like for my puppy and why. I felt like she had all the time in the world for all my questions. When I asked her if my puppy would easily take the wormer----she tasted it! Said it was not too bad. My puppy was so relaxed in there, he fell asleep on the table. I have to share my experience so that no one else has to go through what I have with my pet. After reading about this clinic I had hopes of a good vet and location. First when I went it was costly. The impression I got was that it was very commercialized and $, $, $ was all that mattered. I returned a few times for different pets and each one was treated, nothing special, the regular exam, tested, treated. It is now 2021 and one visit was in 2018. To date I have yet to receive the detailed treatment/care provided for our pet to submit to the insurance. This last time? I am more than disappointed I am appalled and at being given the brush-off several times. I get it that we are in times of restrictions due to COVID and everyone has to adjust and adapt to different requirements. However that does not give any excuse nor reason to be told how many times "We're so busy". That is no reason to be rude on the phone and try to pass you off to another veterinarian for your pet's care. My cat has been diagnosed with cancer. All my cats are transferred to this clinic for their veterinary care so I thought it best for them to be seen there (w/ exception to emergency services). Each time I called to at least have my cat examined so that I can get the best information on how to treat my cat at home for palliative care I was told that the Dr. is not in and won't be back until... Knowing that my cat is terminally ill I asked if I could perhaps get an appointment with the "stand-in" doctor during the regular veterinarian's absence. I was told it is best to wait for Dr. Byam to get back. Ok, this is just ridiculous. 1. If the "stand-in" is indeed a "vet" why can't he or she check my cat? All I was trying to obtain was perhaps a fluids injection since my cat has cancer and will not eat nor drink.; 2. So I asked about euthanasia if it came to that because I want to do right by my loyal and loving pet of 9-10 years. I was told she'd check on it and call me back because they're "so busy". Again, there was the excuse. My feeling about that? It is highly unprofessional to say this to a client and if you're under pressure and cannot handle the calls? Then you shouldn't be there. I finally get a call back. I had already called another veterinarian which was the emergency services that first diagnosed my cat. I was given the fee amount and told that I could stay in the room with my cat but because they have many triage patients that I probably wouldn't be seen right away. I did not have a problem with that since it if it was going to be the last moments with my cat I would like to spend as much time with him as I could. When I got the returned call from Abel Clinic I was told that I could make the euthanasia appointment with the "stand-in" but they would take my cat and I could not stay with him. What the hell is that? Who makes these rules? How do they change from one day to the next when I called prior to Dr. Byam leaving and was told that I could be in the room with my cat? By then I was exasperated. Not only was I emotionally stricken by seeing my cat ill and feeling helpless that I wasn't able to do what I can to help him I was just done with the excuses and being pawned off with the "why don't you check with another veterinarian..." At this point I just said that I would take him elsewhere where I was told I could stay with him. I cannot tell you how elated the receptionist was to hear it. She replies "perfect!" Not once did she show any compassion to my terminally ill pet or being given the runaround. Also when it was recommended by the emergency services veterinarian to have the follow up care for my pet by our regular vet they immediately forwarded my cats care records to Abel Pet Clinic. I asked the receptionist if there was any chance that I could obtain a copy of the care so that I can submit my insurance claim. She pauses and says "I'll see what I can do." Really? The other vet sent it to you immediately while I was on the phone and you can't get to your computer, access the file and forward to me via email? Extremely unprofessional and downright does not want to put in the effort. The techs that I have communicated with during the pick up service at my car were polite and informative. The office manager Jennifer has always been courteous and helpful. The receptionist needs to take some people-skills classes and how to conduct yourself professionally and courteously. I am going to have my cats' files transferred. I am no longer going to this vet. It has definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. And I have let others who are looking for recommendations to vets know that to steer clear of this place. My cat is dying and clearly this person does not care. Not once has she commented on his being ill. But she can state each time I spoke with her that they're very busy. read more
