I was totally upset and worked up when I called VEG ER, but the gentleman on the phone was incredibly kind and calm. When I walked in, I was impressed by how clean and organized the building was. The open concept floor was not what I was expecting but it was really awesome being with my dog every step of the way. The gentleman that helped us offered a bed for my dog to lay on, which was good because we waited like 5 hours. They offer snacks, drinks, as well as blankets for humans because it gets quite cold in there. Everyone there was kind and friendly. You could really tell they were dedicated to their job and providing the best experience for their patients. My princess loved being able to watch everyone walk around her and was completely content. The doctor even sat with her when we were finally seen so she wouldn't have to be moved. :) All the staff talked to her like a baby whenever they addressed her which made me happy too. Really shows they love animals. Paid about $660 to find out she didn't have a lot of poop in her, but the peace of mind was worth it. Getting to see how they take x-rays was cool too, even if my poor baby had to be manhandled hehe. The bill was much cheaper than I expected, which was nice. During a very stressful situation, they stayed calm, patient, and took the time to explain the different types of mushrooms, potential risks, and what signs we should monitor for at home. They were also very transparent about treatment options and helped us find a partial blood panel and payment plan that worked for us without any pressure or judgment. When you are there, you are able to get a room to yourself and stay there all night with your pet. Dr. Sarah Hoggan was so patient and loving throughout the whole process. Our dog Kai is on medication that needs a specific Dr.'s note but when he ran low and we were in a pinch, VEG helped call around to different pharmacies to make sure Kai got his medication that night. When checking out of VEG, Fred was so attentive. Our dog took frequent potty breaks and was anxious to leave. Fred always came and opened the door for us, cleaned up the mess our dog left after eating, and made sure that we had snacks, water, or coffee. I am extremely impressed with the efficiency of this hospital! This was my first time at a VEG. Not just my dog, but all the pets who came after us, were immediately assessed. Our dog's assessment and exam were done simultaneously. While I was giving her history, the vet (Dr. Michala Frederick) was creating the treatment plan on a laptop. Others shared similar experiences with exams happening within minutes of arrival. All employees remained engaged in working, and have a fear-free ethic when treating pets. The staff continued to give updates on the progress of my dog's case. I honestly wasn't used to that much communication at an ER ;) The Vet Assistant working with our dog was very competent in monitoring and recovering a sedated patient. I didn't feel the need to "supervise" her. I apologize for not paying remembering her name. The doctor even came to check on my dog during sedation, which I don't ever see. Additional radiographs were taken without an extra charge. The atmosphere was calm and friendly. I had never been paid so much attention at a pet hospital before. I almost felt like I was the patient. This hospital is light-years ahead of any other emergency hospital I have ever visited. The money spent actually feels worth it. Vet ER's are not cheap. You pay for specialized staff and equipment that surpass an average day-clinic, not to mention 24-hour operation. Pet insurance is the only way I can afford such services. Normally, I feel exhausted, angry, ignored, and extorted by the time I leave an emergency pet hospital (usually 8-10 hours later, even with only a couple patients in ER). My dog had sedation, diagnostics, and medication prescribed all in just a little over 2 hours. There were even 4 other patients who came in after us. I understand it will be longer if there are critical emergencies, and/or numerous patients. However, I believe their efficiency would still drastically cut down on time spent there. From a business perspective, what I witnessed is definetly a collaborative effort between staff and managment in creating a positive and caring environment, in addition to efficiency. It is also clear they have addressed any negative feedback I read on Yelp. A majority of which are just people not listening or understanding what they are being told, or not understanding how ER's work. The open concept design eliminates slacking off and negative talk, creating total transparency. The staff at VEG were kind and compassionate, and I genuinely believe they cared about Teddy my rabbit. Unfortunately, the medical care he received did not meet the standard I expected from an emergency hospital. When I brought Teddy in, I understood that the veterinarians on duty were not exotic specialists. I chose to proceed anyway because he was critically ill, and I trusted that if his condition was beyond their expertise, I would be told so. Instead, we spent approximately five hours in an exam room while Teddy's condition continued to decline. His body temperature was so low that it would not register on the thermometer, yet for most of our visit the only measure taken to keep him warm was a towel. It wasn't until the final hour that he was given a hot water bottle, and we immediately saw him become more alert and responsive. Based on VEG's assessment, we were told Teddy was suffering from heart failure and were advised to seek specialty care. We immediately rushed him to UC Davis believing this was his best chance of survival. The difference in care was noticeable right away. Upon arrival, UC Davis immediately placed Teddy in an incubator to address his dangerously low body temperature. After evaluating him, the veterinarians there did not agree with the heart failure diagnosis and couldn't even find a heart murmur which is consistent in heart failure in bunnies. Instead, they determined that Teddy was suffering from kidney failure caused by a congenital condition he was born with. Unfortunately, his disease was too advanced, and we had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him that same day. I'll also point out that UC Davis said the blood panel and X-rays we paid for at ER were so basic they wouldn't be able an accurate diagnosis. So we had to pay for another blood panel and X-rays that ironically were about the same price as the ER vet. I understand that the outcome may not have changed. What is difficult to accept is the amount of time, money, and emotional energy spent pursuing a diagnosis that was later contradicted by specialists. We spent over $1,000 and valuable hours at a time when every decision felt critical. My concern is not that VEG lacked a rabbit specialist. My concern is that a critically ill rabbit was evaluated, diagnosed, and managed without clear communication about the hospital's limitations in treating exotic animals. Looking back, I would have preferred to be told immediately that Teddy needed care from an exotic specialist rather than receiving a diagnosis that turned out to be incorrect. I am sharing this review because rabbit owners deserve to know that emergency care for exotic animals can vary significantly. Teddy deserved the best possible care in his final hours, and I hope VEG ER uses this feedback to improve how critically ill exotic pets are evaluated, stabilized, and referred in the future. read more

On Sunday night, we rushed in with our 11-month-old Yorkie, Dallas (only 4 lbs), after he choked and swallowed a collagen chew that became lodged in his esophagus, causing a partial obstruction. He was miserable, lethargic, and we were absolutely terrified. Despite how incredibly busy and chaotic the ER was that night, the entire team was attentive, compassionate, and knowledgeable. What stood out most was how well they worked together -- doctors and nurses who weren't even assigned to Dallas still checked in on us, made sure we were comfortable, and kept us informed while we waited. That level of teamwork and care does not go unnoticed. Dallas ultimately required an endoscopy, and thanks to their expertise, he is now on the road to a full recovery. Our puppy has no respect for our cat's personal space, which resulted in a swat to the eyeball. We read online that cat scratches can become infected easily-- especially in the eye. Her eye was red and swollen so I freaked out and we took her to VEG. As soon as we got there, a tech got her weighed and took her vitals. It took a while to get to the actual exam and treatment portion, but as an emergency care center, VEG triages all of the animals there. So if it takes a long time for your animal to be seen, consider yourself lucky. There were other pups who were doing a lot worse and their care was much more urgent. The layout of the place is really strange. All the exam tables are in one big room. So while we were waiting for treatment, we saw multiple pups come in on gurneys and being given what I will call "end of life care". It felt really invasive to the privacy of the people crying over their pet, and I can see how it might be distressing for some. Prices reflect that it's an emergency department. Our regular vet was overbooked and we were referred to VEG when our Orange cat "Momo" needed treatment for a left cheek abscess. We called ahead of time and they were expecting us. We were immediately greeted and triaged. It's really very similar to a human urgent care/ER where treatment and waiting area are in one big room. We were placed in one of the few side treatment rooms they have because we weren't sure if Momo was gonna bolt or not. A vet tech took vitals. They sit on the floor with your pet and Momo responded really well to them.We were greeted by Dr. Connor Long and he confirmed that it was an abscess that needed incision, drainage and flushing. He would need to put her under to do the procedure. Once they gave Momo the sleepy meds and she was out, the procedure was quick. They sent us home with pain meds, antibiotics, a soft cone and care instructions and to follow up in 7 days.She's recovering nicely at home They send you a treatment plan via text and then they will discuss any concerns you may have. Here's some things to remember. Although there are very few negative Yelp comments, some past clients complain about cost and wait time: **This is a PREMIUM service vet clinic as you can basically walk in, 24/7 and it is EXPENSIVE, The Usual and customary vet fees you would normally pay at your regular vet may be higher here. However, if your pet is having a medical emergency, it's so nice to have a place you can go for immediate care by caring, qualified staff. ** Be prepared to wait.. Just like any urgent care, patients are seen in order of severity. We waited about 3 hours in the side room but that was perfectly ok. While it may seem like they aren't busy and waiting room is empty, they are caring for the most critically ill patients, doing surgeries, prepping them, monitoring them, doing follow-up calls, etc. Eat or grab a snack to bring with you as you may be waiting for a while and there are no fast food places nearby. My husband is diabetic and hadn't eaten in over 5 hours and staff found him a few snacks and offered them to him, along with some water and he was fine. We really appreciated this because he really didn't want to leave Momo there but he wears a blood sugar monitor and his sugar was getting low. ** VEG does not do preventative care or routine care at this clinic , such as vaccines, microchip, etc. It is emergency vet care only. EG has been in need of this type of clinic for a long time. Other local vets can't handle the capacity--even the ones that keep emergency hours have turned people away. Before bed one night, we noticed a few small hives on our lab, Sumi's, face. She was acting normal and didn't seem bothered by them. So, we gave her benedryl and we all went to bed. We woke at 3:30 am to Sumi scratching her face and saw that her eyes and snout were very swollen and itchy. We took her right into VEG and she was treated like a rockstar. Even in the wee morning hours, the staff and the Veterinarian were ready to take care of our lab. She needed some benedryl and cortisol injections. We were there about an hour and sent on our way. The next day, Sumi had some vomiting, I called VEG and they had us bring her back in for a free recheck - just to make sure all was ok. She was ok and prescribed some anti nausea meds. All in all, we were very happy with her treatment and happy to know that there is an emergency vet near us for any future needs when our regular vet is not open. read more

So I very rarely write reviews for veterinary services since it could be hit and miss. However, I'd like to express my gratitude to the team at VEG. I brought my dog in for ER care due to a neighbor's dog chasing my dog and potential dog bite wound (other dog biting mine). I know the other dog isn't vaccinated, my dog is. So just to be sure, I brought my dog in for that added reassurance. I called ahead of time to ask about wait time. Took my dog in at around 6 pm on a Sunday. This ER took the place of where Ulta used to be. The building is small but inside, they made it more open. There are a few closed door rooms but the general check-in area is an open layout with exam tables. The staff was able to take my information down, took my dog's vitals and assessed the visit based on my concerns. ER visit fee was relatively affordable compared to other ER places. Only one other place I have visited, charges the same ER fee. We went home with a topical for his small abrasion and no risk for rabies since he's vaccinated. Post visit, the team did text me to check-in and they also sent me his medical records. This is highly important if you have pet insurance and insurance is requesting for this information. With my dog's insurance, his claim was fully covered. Thank you to the team at VEG for being kind and taking care of my dog during our visit! I like that there's an option for ER care for our pets in Elk Grove. Pets are also our family. Most ER places are not only far, there very few of them. Usually, they are located in outskirts of Elk Grove or nearby Sacramento areas. VEG is open 24 hours and for ER services only. I think you need to call ahead of time for the late hours just in case. read more

The staff was welcoming and kind, which I appreciated -- but unfortunately, that's about the only positive part of our experience. We were charged $195 just for a basic check-up where all they did was glance at the area our pup was bleeding from. No real treatment, no resolution. It took over an hour to be seen even though the waiting room was completely empty, which made the wait feel even more frustrating. Once we were finally seen, the vet did nothing but "wipe" the area and then told us further diagnostics like bloodwork and X-rays would cost upwards of $1,600 -- all while admitting they couldn't even perform the procedure our dog actually needed. Why suggest expensive testing if the treatment can't even be done there? So then we would have to go to another vet and pay for it all again. It's not about the pets for them it's about the money and it shows. We also had questions about insurance and she's like sorry it's a pre existing condition it doesn't apply like atleast look into it. Or offer some assistance. Then came the medication estimate -- over $450 for prescriptions we didn't feel confident about, especially given how little was done to assess the actual problem. No real guidance, no advice, and no sense that they were trying to help -- just big price tags thrown at us during a stressful time. Also I just looked up the "herb medicine" they were trying to sell to us for $250 on Amazon and got the herb for about $15 also the cleaning wipes from petsmart for $7 and saline spray for $6 and a pain medication for $12 so all together what should be $40 they tried to charge me $450!!!!!!!! Wild! Honestly, it felt like we were being taken advantage of during an emotional situation. We would've been better off caring for our pup at home rather than paying nearly $200 for a glorified wipe-down. Extremely disappointed and wouldn't recommend this place unless you're ready to be overcharged and underserved. read more

I love this place, their concept is great, and their staff was amazing. We recently had to bring our fur baby to the ER. We decided to go to this location since we was the nearest to our house. Called in advanced, and when we arrived they were ready for us. They have an open concept to where you can see all that they do to your loved one. As a healthcare provider and a dog mom, I really appreciated this aspect so much. Our pup was able to stay with us while they treated him in our hands. I felt like he was much more calm doing so. On the downside, you see everyone else too. They do get busy, and it was like watching one of those vet er shows when we were there. Super cool in my honest opinion. VEG proved they really care. From my first call to AFTER we made the hardest decision ever, they were there to listen, guide, explain, comfort, and CARE for our dog AND us. My dog who is 15 years old got sliced on his neck by the PetSmart Groomers at Delta Shores. Dr. Mikayla (not sure of the spelling) was great. She was friendly, direct and offered me multiple care plans. The additional staff here was so kind. The vet techs were great with my poor little guy, and the receptionist, while busy, still offered me something to drink and a snack. This helped distract me. Everyone was so kind and transparent. My little guy needed 7 staples in his neck and the Dr. was so efficient and thorough. I couldn't say better things about this place, honestly. Hopefully, I don't have to come back but if another medical emergency happens- I'll be coming back here. read more
