All the high praise you're reading in the reviews about Abel's is legit. When we first stopped in we were greeted by a funny, very nice lady (sorry, didn't get her name). She gave us some advice but said that the Fishing Guru would be at the store the next day. We came back and met Patrick, and we were not disappointed. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable, but what a glowing personality! His focus is on what you need to provide a great experience, not on selling you stuff you don't need. We came back again to attend his "Fish Like a Local" free fishing class. He provides everything, including tackle and bait, and makes everyone feel like it's all about them. As a bonus, he is a doppelgänger for my niece's husband, also another fine human being. I could go on and on but hopefully you get the point. You'll be glad you took the time to stop in. , we stopped in Abel tackle and Pro Shop to pick up some fishing tackle while we were there I'm not sure if it was the manager or the owner but he was totally service-oriented and concerned about our well-being. After we purchased a few Choice fishing lures we noticed that they had quite a few really need t-shirts so we need quality shirts and some fishing gear while we were there one of the local fishermen stopped in to pick up a brand new stainless steel prop so it looks like they actually service many of the local fishermen also which gives me a vote of confidence shopping here. Hey, I liked this place. A great breakfast sandwich in the morning from a place that looks like it's used to serving only the locals. The owner was just sitting outside shooting the $%^* with his next door neighbor and his dog. If you're squeamish about germs, you may want to think twice, but I found the sandwich delish and just what I needed to start my day out right in the keys. Pat and the rest of the team are "first class". I came by to buy some live shrimp, and ended up getting some tips on how to effectively fish the patch reefs. We killed it because of Pats advice. I attended his "fish like a local" fishing class to learn a few rigs. Made a huge difference in my fishing game. I will be buying all my bait here from now on. Super surly, rude, and completely devoid of basic math skills. I went in fairly close to closing- I was fishing the sunset high tide and needed fresh bait- my bad? Lady behind the counter was a turbo-bitch. I get it- stupid tourist, wanting to spend money, asking what to buy. Again- my bad? I asked for a dozen live shrimp ("what, are you gonna catch half a dozen fish tonight?".. f off, lady) and a live crab (hoping to entice a tarpon). Handed her my card- "Sorry, $10 minimum." Asked her what else I should buy, got an annoyed look and an even more annoyed suggestion for some sodas. Said I'd take a spoon to go after some 'cuda, changed my mind to light bait rig. Total came to $14. "Did you take the spoon off?" "YES!" She redid the math, taking the spoon off. $10. "Better?" Tip for you, bitchy old lady- if I wanted to get treated like an asshole, I'd come in acting like one. But when I come in politely asking for help spending my money, it would be in your best interest to oblige. read more

Abel's Tackle Box is the perfect spot for fishing equipment! I went to Starbucks early Saturday morning when I realized I needed new line for my fishing pole, which just happened to be in my car at the time... it was too coincidental! So, I stopped into Abel's Tackle Box, about 100 feet from Starbucks at The Postcard Inn, and was immediately greeted by the friendliest, most fishing-knowledgable, and helpful gentleman, Patrick. I went to buy new nylon fishing line and when I got to the counter, Patrick offered to help me string my fishing pole. He continued to talk to me about the types of fishing lines, fish bait, etc. that I would need to catch fish in Islamorada (on the bay side). After about an hour of learning all new things about fishing, I left Abel's Tackle Box with new fishing line, fish hooks, and 2 dozen shrimp.. all for only $11! Then, about 20 minutes later, I realized I had forgot my fishing equipment back in Fort Lauderdale, so I returned to Abel's to get pliers and a net. Overall, my five star rating for Abel's Tackle Box is because of Patrick, who had phenomenal customer-service skills. In the end, I caught 1 mangrove snapper and 2 grunts, but ended up throwing everything back (note - I was fishing from my paddleboard... LOL) ! read more

We were on the Pelican Cove beach (next to Abel's) and saw and heard ALOT of things that were AWFUL when it came to the jet ski guide taking people out. He screamed, yelled, insulted, and was totally obnoxious to his clients. On the 3rd day he was dropping the "F-bomb" at his clients in front of children on the beach with us. The owner needs to get rid of this guy. If I had gone out with him I would have demanded a refund at the end of the trip! NEVER GO THERE unless you want to pay good money to be yelled out and insulted with the F-bomb! read more

Great shop, friendly staff well stocked when it comes to keys tackle shops. Patrick guided me to some local shore spots and let me know when to go there. Best interaction I've had in a Keys Tackle shop, coming from New England where we fish a bit differently... Patrick unlike every other tackle shop I visited lent some pointers where other tackle shops laughed in my face.
