Had the privilege of joining friends this afternoon at Aberrant for the first time and it was just great! We loved the food, the beer, the seating, staff.... it was all great. This place on Grand River right in the heart of Howell was quite the find. It has a sizeable bar with chairs with backs and probably seats a dozen. There are a bunch of tables and a separate game room with a couple of corn hole games. I had the Cerveza de Chile which was wonderful, a beer with good chili flavor but without the heat. We shared the special which was fried chicken on a waffle with a honey dressing. It was very tasty but a little messy. The service was great, our waitress was very attentive and chatty, they went out of the way to change to TV to the tiger game although two or three people had to work on it. Very welcome addition to Howell's growing bar scene. Great beer selection. All the beers were extremely smooth. Some of my favorites were the English ales, which had a hint of Belgium style mixed in. The Stout de Olla has one of the better coffee flavors I've tasted in a Coffee stout. For IPA lovers, there is the west coast IPA with 77 IBUs. We tried the pizza and sliders (came with fries). The pizzas were small, but the fresh mozzarella on top saved the day. The sliders were juicy and flavorful. Try their dipping sauces, they have a ton! They have a side game room with corn hole. We did takeout. Wanted to support a local business but the workers and patrons are not practicing covid safety. The dining room and patio are open. However, all but 2 people were not wearing masks. This includes the cooks and the servers--the people handling and serving your food--no masks. None of diners either. When we got the food home it was bland and not tasty at all. They have a "special" for taco Tuesday--$3/taco...with no sides. Well 3 tacos on special cost more than the street tacos on the menu (same number). The burger was good--hence 2 stars. The atmosphere is almost cute but it somehow lacking in warmth and coziness. The high ceilings provide terrible acoustics for the restaurant making it difficult to carry conversation over the sound of babies crying, people talking, and chairs dragging across the cement floor. The corn hole area was a nice touch. There were several interesting beers available and the waitress nicely gave us several samples before we made our final selection of amber ale. I'm a non drinker, but find myself in brew houses frequently due to my husband and his best friend being avid beer drinkers. It's a nice perk when places have a decent food menu. We visited Aberrant this weekend and enjoyed it a great deal! The only odd/surprising thing was that our nachos were cold. Not like, room-temp-was-once-warm-but-sat-too-long, but meant-to-be-cold-but-unexpected. Both types of nachos we ordered were served cold. Super delicious nonetheless, so not complaining. Just giving a heads up to those who may follow us! I wasn't super hungry so I ordered the soft pretzels and they were standard, good. Friends had the chicken and waffles and raved about them. Husband had the BBQ pork nachos and a bowl of beer cheese soup. Soup was spicy and delish. The chips for the nachos (I think they called them pub chips?), were SO GOOD. This brewery has the most amazing food! We stopped in downtown Howell for a shopping trip and our friend recommended Aberrant Ales for lunch. We ordered the Naan Nibblers to start - so so good! And then we tried the Sliders and Chicken Sandwich called 'Mother Clucker Jones'. Guys, this was the BEST Chicken sandwich I have ever had! The slaw and sweet chili sauce on top was delicious and it was cooked perfectly. Their French Fries are great, and I loved the sweet potato fries as well. We just ventured out for our second trip (1 hour from home but totally worth the drive!) and the chicken sandwich was just as good as I remembered! Well done Aberrant Ales! Was overpriced but good. Waitress didn't do anything but set the food on the table. I dropped my napkin on the ground and when I asked for another one she pointed to the one on the table like ? Instead of just giving me some more napkins. Don't know what her fuss was about it. I also left a 20% cash tip on the table. I don't think that I signed the receipt (I payed with a card) yet she also added a 20% tip to my bill. Not cool. This is your modern day brewery. Maybe not what you picture for a brewery with the large picture windows letting in sunlight and modern decor with a very simple clean look, but very welcoming and fresh. They have a decent list of brews on tap and will let you sample. They offer flights for $7 as well. They also have a food menu and their pizzas are fantastic. They have a wood fire oven so the pizzas are cooked to perfection. Their menu also includes panini's, sliders, salads and small bites. Our server was helpful when we asked for favorites and recommendations. The brewery is spacious and open and behind the wall of the bar is an open area with a few couches and cornhole. Par for course. Smells like a deep fryer. Pros: great location in downtown howell. I love that they offer food, although i didn't partake. Beers were solid, but nothing outstanding. I enjoyed the sour and the stout de olla the most. Waitstaff was friendly and attentive. Cons: atmosphere was blah. For being a newer brewery in an increasingly saturated scene, i'd like to see something, anything, more unique to set them apart. Don't get me wrong, it's nice, but the decor is just very typical and overdone. Mug club mugs are the most boring i've seen in a brewery: all of them are the same, and one of maybe 4 colors. Biggest disappointment was i couldn't order a 10oz. of any beers, i had to order either a sampler or a pint, which is surprising as 10oz. pours are standard at most every other brewery. The glass even had a 10oz. mark! Also, the beer list was not updated. All in all, i am glad to see a brewery in downtown howell and look forward to see how it will evolve and grow in the future. We tried Aberrant Ales shortly after it opened and had some of the usual new business issues but now they've had time to work out the bugs and we finally decided to give them another try. Twice. First of all, a loud "sports bar" vibe just doesn't work for us these days so sitting inside isn't an option but they do have some outdoor seating and on two occasions we stopped by to have a bite to eat. Attempt #1 was a complete bust. We sat down and eventually a waitress came out, said she'd be right out with menus and . . . nothing, zip. nada. We waited for over 15 minutes. I looked inside and she was leaning on the bar chatting with other staff members. The place was nearly empty. So we left and walked over to 2Fogs. Problem solved. Then, feeling reckless, I decided to try again. A beautiful Friday afternoon around 2:00. Sat outside and, yep, waited. Waitress shows up says "I'm the only one here, do you want a menu?" Gee, what a great welcome, am I imposing? But I toughed it out and eventually got my order in and even received my lunch and drink. In between, however, my lonely waitress managed to chit chat with friends sitting at the other picnic table instead of A.) Taking my order, B.) Delivering my order, C.) Delivering my check and D.) Taking my payment. Perhaps she misunderstands the word "wait" in the word waitress. I was reluctant to post this review until I saw numerous other reviews mention the awful service here. Pros: beer and wings Cons: pizza Meh:service I was stoked to try this place. They really shine from a beer standpoint. They are relatively new, so you really can't judge them too harsh yet. Having said that, I was really impressed! Their cream stout and IPAs were great. The beer is really well done and balanced. Each beer was an awesome representation of the style. I really like the potential in expanding their beer list and experimenting with some adjunct stouts, new England IPAs, and barrel aged beers. I would definitely go back for the beer. The food on the other hand. We ordered boneless wings and a pizza. The wings were homemade and crispy. I would absolutely order them again. The pizza was awful. It reminded me of pizza I slopped together as a 12 year old trying to be creative. The sauce wasn't very fl avorful and cheese barely melted. It tasted like it was sitting around for a very long time. Really poorly executed. My wife, son, and myself all passed on it. The service wasn't awful or slow but it was neither friendly or informative. I'd really only take a half star off for it but you know how that goes. In closing, it's a 3.5 star place. If/when they get their pizza game together and refine the service they are a solid 4 to 5. Great potential here and I'll definitely reassess them in the coming months. read more

Gorgeous building - definitely a place I would bring friends to hang. As another reviewer mentioned, the beers are all very smooth. Order a flight to see which is your favorite. The stouts are delicious! Can't wait to see what other types of brews they roll out. The Michigan salad and corned beef sliders have been my favorite meal items so far. Went for taco Tuesday. Went in and the waiter we had was nice but didn't really pay attention to us all that much. We of course had tacos and I thought they were okay but they were extremely wet. I literally had a swamp on my plate. I asked what type of pop they serve and the waiter just said oh you know average stuff. With the field of craft brew pubs getting crowded Aberrant Ales stands ahead of all the others in the area. I sampled 8 of the beers on tap along with pickle fries and a excellent chef salad. The core beers were okay but the two farmhouse sours and the wheat beer were outstanding. Could have given this place a 3-4. Beer is pretty good. Brewery theme is cool but my bartender is awful. Only one at the bar and she hasn't said a word to me other than getting my beer. Some people just shouldn't be behind the bar. Much prefer Brewery Becker in Brighton. Solid all the way around and it's only a twenty minute drive there. read more
