I really wanted to love this place. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a relaxing and upscale atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food and service did not match the setting. Our server was polite but not friendly, and not particularly engaging or helpful. She did not explain the menu, mention any specials, or offer recommendations. For a restaurant that positions itself as a fine dining experience, we expected a higher level of service and attentiveness. We started with the Ahi Tuna appetizer. It was decent, but there was so much going on with the dish that the tuna itself seemed lost. For my entrée, I ordered the Braised Short Rib. It was absolutely delicious and was the highlight of the meal. However, it was served over a fried potato component that was extremely disappointing. It was overcooked, lacked flavor, and did not complement the dish at all. My boyfriend ordered the ribeye steak. He rarely orders steak at restaurants because he cooks excellent steaks at home, but he decided to try one at a restaurant known for fine dining. Unfortunately, the steak was the biggest disappointment of the evening. It was bland and lacked even basic seasoning. The menu states that the steaks are served with the restaurant's signature zip sauce, but none was served with his meal. For a $68 ribeye, we expected much more flavor and attention to detail. For the first time ever, he did not finish his steak. When we expressed our concerns, the manager came over, apologized, and removed the steak from our bill. We appreciated that gesture and felt the manager handled the situation professionally. While the restaurant itself is beautiful and upscale, the music selection felt out of place for the fine-dining atmosphere they appear to be creating. The energetic classic rock/pop playlist distracted somewhat from the elegant ambiance and didn't match the level of sophistication reflected in the décor and pricing. Fine dining isn't just expensive food on fancy plates. It's consistency. It's a server who knows the menu inside and out. It's attention to detail. This review is very close to a five star one for me, but there is one aspect that makes it four stars. My husband and I went here today for the first time, to celebrate my birthday, which was a few weeks ago. Our waiter was Mark, and he was very good and attentive. I started with their Strawberry Fields cocktail, one of the seasonal ones, and my husband had the Old Fashioned - we enjoyed both. For our appetizer, we ordered the beef tallow candle... I had had a similar appetizer at Frame in Oak Park a while back, which has now closed, and it was good. I didn't like this one quite as much, but it was still good, and also came with some butter. I had the 8 ounce petite filet and unfortunately this is where I was disappointed - which is especially disappointing because this place is a steakhouse. I thought it was nice and tender, but didn't have much taste. The zip sauce provided with it was very good with it, but I always say that the mark of a good steak is if it doesn't need any sauces to go with it. My husband got the 16 ounce New York strip, and I felt the same way about that steak as well. That being said, we got the Potatoes Romanoff and the Brussels sprouts for our sides and those were both excellent. I would order both again, but the rest of their sides also looked good so I would maybe try something else. The Reserve also excels at customer service. They gave me a really nice candle as a birthday gift, and a card signed by the staff. They also brought out a rather large birthday sundae on the house, with fruit in it, and I was impressed by both of these things... I have never been to a restaurant where they give you a full-size candle for your birthday, as well as dessert! Because of this, I didn't get to see the full dessert menu, but the guests at the table next to us were eyeing the crème brûlée, it seemed. Based on this experience, I would come back here, but I would maybe get different steak or an accompaniment for it - they had seasoned butter add-ons and others, too. Beautiful space, great reputation, and the perfect setting for our long-overdue date night. We booked a reservation online, walked in, and were greeted warmly by the hostess. It was a slow night -- maybe a dozen guests total -- but oddly, we were seated right next to a very loud group of ten. Think "bar crowd energy" in an upscale steakhouse. They were having the time of their lives... just not the kind of vibe you want when you're out for a quiet dinner. Unfortunately, they didn't leave until about 20 minutes before we did, so conversation was basically a shouting match. Now, onto the food -- the part that did shine. Our server Jennifer was friendly but felt a bit ready to wrap up for the night. We started with a glass of Prosecco and hot tea for my wife. The Lobster Cargo stole the show -- buttery, garlicky, and rich, with tender lobster and crisp toast. A must-order appetizer. The Rainbow Carrots with goat cheese fondue and pistachios were flavorful, though they took 15 minutes to arrive after our first course, which felt odd given the simplicity of the dish. For mains, the Roasted Half Chicken was near perfection -- crispy skin, a rich mushroom cream sauce, and easily one of the best chicken dishes we've had (and we've eaten our way around the country). The Maple-Glazed Salmon was another win, with delicate squash, caramelized onion hash, and a Dijon sauce that tied everything together beautifully. We had a really good celebrating my girl! The mimosa flight was delicious! Love the grapefruit....then I ordered a flask of Chambord, OMG new fav way to enjoy champagne. For appetizer we had shrimp cocktail; they were out of the cinnamon rolls and I was so sad. I love cinnamon rolls. Our waitress Persefania was amazing! Very down to earth, helpful, funny and did her job well. I ordered the smoked salmon omelet and it did not disappoint. Full of flavor, perfect amount of dill cream cheese and capers. My common brioche toast was delightful with jam. I also ordered the chicken sausage and it was tasty. We had the black and Gold dessert and it was delicious. Rich chocolate flavor. The zip sauce was good too. The sides could be improved. The table bread was a little dry and cold. The potatoes had so much pepper in them, it was so overpowering and we only ended up taking a bite each. The Mac and cheese was just ok- it could definitely be more cheesy. I wouldn't recommend either of them. Started with a Caesar salad and a French Onion soup which were great Ordered the Elk Chops and the Ribeye. Both were pan seared, not much flavor to them, dry on the outside. The zip sauce for the steak was good but thin and the Blackberry Demi was thin as well and needed a touch of sweetness that I thought it would have being Blackberry, but both meats needed the sauce to combat the dryness of the meat and add flavor. Hello, I would like to submit a formal complaint regarding my service last night. To be frank, I have a lactose allergy (not intolerance) that prevents my digestive system from moving and will cause hives. My friend and I went to the Reserve last night for the Gilmore Girls VIP dinner. Upon arrival, I let the host know we were with the event and that I had an allergen. No problem. We were led to our table and met our waitress (I cannot recall her name, but she had short blond hair). I let her know that I have a dairy allergy and asked if it was possible to eat from the VIP menu. She asked and gave me the following options: shrimp cocktail (which was comically sad compared to the French onion soup), and the sirloin or chicken without sauce. I went sirloin, well done for baby. We get our food and we start eating, but something feels off. Our waitress comes by and says "don't eat the zip sauce! It has dairy!" Mind you I have already had several bites. I then ask (after finishing my second bite of the potatoes) if they have cheese in them. She said yes, is that a problem? Then realized and got me a plain baked potato. I was in total bewilderment. Then my friend asked if there were any dairy-free dessert options in the restaurant, as I had noted my allergy weeks ago and she said no and that she didn't believe they would be able to reduce the bill because I couldn't have the tiramisu. What? She ended up getting me sliced strawberries as my tiramisu replacement. I cannot believe that your staff, after know about an allergy for weeks would serve the allergen to a guest. There was no apology. I was charged full price for my meal, despite eating something that has put me in the hospital before and not having an adequate alternative. And the steak, despite being burnt to a crisp on the outside was still pink, so I didn't even feel comfortable eating it. read more

I'll start this by saying the staff here are very kind and food not enjoyed by customers is not a reflection on them but rather in whoever thought this concept was a good idea. We came in for the first time, very hesitantly, after hearing some mixed reviews. We ordered a bottle of wine and a few Negronis and started with filet tartare and truffle fries. Nothing special but not bad, truffle fries are closer to garlic fries but I'm not complaining. The disasters were the steaks. Kids ordered ribeyes medium, and we got a cowboy ribeye rare, and a filet rare. Not really sure how these steaks are prepared but the two ribeyes were blue rare (and I'm being generous they were cooked for a minute a side if that), and the cowboy and filet were way over done. If I can cook a better steak at my house for a quarter of the price why would I consider going out? A steakhouse is supposed to be an above and beyond experience. Sides were ok, all were cold which makes me think they sit in a refrigerator and are heated in a microwave. The manager came to apologize and seemed surprised that we were unhappy. We were appeased with the driest piece of cake I've ever had at which point we decided, we'll go to the Chop House next time. I'm not a picky customer and never send anything back at a restaurant but if you want to achieve what The Reserve is setting out to accomplish you have to be serious. This place strikes me as a kid wearing their dad's dress shoes and suit coat type of steak house. It seems they're in too deep. All that glitters is not gold. I cannot express into words how disappointed I am with my experience working with The Reserve and Steve, "the General Manager". I had been looking forward to trying this restaurant for over a year after seeing a presentation on a local morning TV show. When my daughter's wedding rehearsal came into play, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to finally make the drive for her rehearsal dinner. For 24 days, I worked directly with Steve planning this event. We went back and forth extensively on menu selections, specialty items, and the intimate experience I hoped to create for the bride, groom, and their wedding party. On February 5th, after receiving the final quote, I emailed him stating clearly: "Ok, we are good to go. What do you need from me to finalize the plans?" He responded that he would send a contract for signature and collect a deposit. I never received that contract or any request for the deposit. While Steve was often delayed in responding throughout the process, he had mentioned early on that he was dealing with family issues, so I was understanding and patient. I repeatedly reassured him that there was no need to apologize, I understood and that I was happy to move forward whenever he was ready. A few days ago, I received an email from Steve stating that they could no longer host our rehearsal dinner because they had booked a wine event instead. He added that I could choose another date if I wanted. This was shocking and upsetting, given that we had spent nearly a month finalizing every detail and I have repeatedly made it clear we were coming to his restaurant for this special occasion. I called to seek clarification, Steve returned my call and told me, bluntly, that since I never signed a contract, they booked another event. I explained that I never received the contract he promised to send. His response was that he had been busy with Valentine's Day. He then suggested that I could simply pick another date, stating that he was "trying to help me." This is a wedding rehearsal dinner -- the date is not flexible. When I explained this, he told me I should have signed the contract. When I reiterated that I never received one, he stated that I should have signed the blank sample contract he showed me during our initial meeting -- a document with no pricing, menu, or agreed-upon dates, time or any details. The conversation ended with me in tears, and Steve ended the call by saying he "tried to help" by telling me to pick another date. This experience was deeply upsetting, unprofessional, and completely avoidable. The lack of follow-through, accountability, and empathy shown during such an important family moment was unacceptable. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion for me I have one daughter and he did not even seem to care; he was more worried about his ego and what he had to say. An after thought I had - we did have a private room booked, he could of still accommodate us that evening. read more

Hearing about Brighton's first and only proper steakhouse, my dad and I came in for happy hour to check out their bar menu (their happy hour pricing is only honored in the bar section, fyi). First impressions walking in...the ambiance was posh and clean, with a fire burning away in the hearth in the main dining room. We ordered a few apps and a couple wagyu burgers. While we waited, I tried one of their Old Fashioneds with walnut bitters. The aroma and the flavors from the bitters were warm, inviting, and almost seasonal. I'd recommend trying one. Everything was precise. The wait staff was cleanly dressed and pressed, and very polite and engaging. The food was also precisely executed! I loved that their patty for the burger was well seasoned with salt and pepper. The brioche bun was nicely griddled, adding to the texture of the perfectly cooked patty which was seared to an almost crispy effect. The steak tip skewers app was fantastic! I'm guessing the happy hour version may be a tad on the smaller size than when ordering it outside of happy hour pricing but the sauce, the meat and the sear on the meat made them craveworthy. Their Ahi poke comes nestled in an avocados spread, which at first I thought was going to have a touch of wasabi in it but it was purely avocado and very delicate. That said, if I was making this I'd throw in a dash of wasabi for a little punch! I liked their version very much though. The Brussels and belly was a nice app with a fair amount to share. There was a lot of the Brussels and an appropriate amount of the belly, but the pork belly was, again, very well executed. The truffle fries that came with our burgers were also perfectly crispy outside and creamy inside. Those came with ketchup and aioli to guild the lily, as it were. We really enjoyed this spot. The Reserve has made up for my last review. The first time I did not have a good experience with the steak. But the owner actually called me and talked to me and sent me a gift card. We came back to try happy hour and it was amazing. Prices were awesome. The food was top-notch. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend the burger and the brussels sprouts. Finally! A gorgeous upscale restaurant on Main Street in downtown Brighton. This place rivals any steakhouse in the metro Detroit area. The filet was perfectly done. The truffle mac & cheese was very creamy & topped with breadcrumbs which added a great crunch. The crab cake was combined nicely with a Dijon aioli & corn relish. The french onion soup was fantastic! It has a delicious thick puff pastry shell under the melted Gruyère. Loved it all! Drinks....enjoy the Lemon Lavender Martini at the bar & they will add a flavor bubble to your drink We also enjoyed The Best Margarita. It's served with a cocktail shaker containing a 2nd margarita....your refill ready to go. The Reserve Old Fashioned was also great. Beautiful patio with fire pits. Great place to enjoy a cocktail. For those of you who want a step up and enjoy fine dining, the Reserve won't disappoint, I asked my wife what she thought was the worse thing we ordered, her response was "nothing", I think that summed up our experience. My favorite was the au gratin potatoes or maybe the tuna appetizer?? Was not disappointed in anything, including our servers Megan or Christine. Honestly I was disturbed by the prices, and despite of liking the place, I would think twice before going again, it's too much in my perception. I travel the country for work and eat at a ton of great steakhouses. Searching for a good steak within reasonable driving distance in Livingston County has always been an exercise in futility. My expectations were that I would leave disappointed and a little irritated due to the price point. The Reserve fully exceeded my expectations!! We started with the mussels and truffle fries which were both good. For our mains, I had the 16oz HAB ribeye that was seasoned and cooked to perfection. My daughter got the chicken milanese which she enjoyed and my wife ordered the special - a wild mushroom risotto which was to die for. Sides were the truffle mac and cheese, cream corn, and potatoes Romanoff. All the sides were incredible! Service was top notch and we were in and out in an hour and a half. We were all thrilled to FINALLY find an upscale steakhouse in Livingston County that checks all the boxes! We'll be back often! read more

The Reserve is a beautiful place and a needed addition to Brighton. It's crazy expensive but it's a nice night out and most of the food was decent. We decided to try The Reserve for our anniversary. We made reservations and were seated immediately. Here's what I didn't like about it it. I think it's arrogant not to provide salt and pepper on the table for people who enjoy it. No, your chef doesn't know exactly the amount of seasoning each person enjoys or requires. After covid, my taste buds are blunted and I need more salt and pepper to even taste some foods. No one came back to ask how our food was or if we needed anything so I was never able to ask for salt & pepper. We never saw our server again until it was time to clear the plates. As a former food server, that's a huge fail. I had to take my dinner home to reheat it and finally enjoy it the next day. The second thing I didn't like is the way they have two different servers playing tag team. Its pointless and confusing. It's also a good way to drop the ball completely which is what happened in our case. The third thing was the hearty recommendation for the cheesecake; calling it the best around. It was mealy and over-baked and we couldn't eat it. We took it home but ended up pitching it. This is the first restaurant in history where I had to pay for mediocre, uninspiring bread. It's also the first time in my life I was served French Onion Soup with NO CHEESE. That was a waste of money and again, no one came to check if it was ok or I would've sent it back. It's such a beautiful place and Brighton very much needed a fine dining restaurant. I hope The Reserve succeeds wildly, but it'll be quite awhile before we go back. There's nothing like spending $250 for a meal plus $50 tip to whomever and not seeing your server(s) most of the night and being dissatisfied with much of your meal. I honestly wanted to love this restaurant experience. It is a local high end steakhouse that gives a big city option. The ambience is lovely and it aspires to be more. Brighton was decked out for the holidays and we had a prime window seat. I had taken the time to review the menu so I knew what to expect, so no surprises on the prices. I was ready. My husband and I frequently share main courses to hit all the courses and not leave over uncomfortably full. We bought the bread service, ordered a salad and I selected a nice wine. So far so good. The salad seemed really big almost an entee size and we ended up sharing some of that. It was ok. It indicated it was a chopped salad but was a very large chop but still tasty. This is where things got surreal- we ordered the larger 10 oz filet split medium, with 2 sides - potato and corn. What arrived was 2 plates with some lettuce weeds and what looked like coal pieces. We waited for or sides. When they did not arrived I signaled for the staff, she looked shocked and came backed saying they were not ready. Next staff comes back and says they forgot to order them. Asked if we would like them to go?? Proceeds to bring them back to the table in a rabbit ear tied plastic bag placed in the middle of the table. It sat there like a huge joke as she said she took them off the bill and it sat next to my birthday card. Right behind her is the waiter with a dish of ice cream with a sparkler in it. I may have glared at him because he turned and walked away. By this point it is up there with the worst birthday dinner of my life!! The manager came over and offers to take the coal off the bill. Tonight was the celebration of our 32nd wedding anniversary. For 32 years my bride and I treat ourselves to a highly rated, new and or highly promoted restaurant in Metro Detroit . This year we chose " The Reserve " a new local steakhouse in Brighton MI. This highly anticipated new high end steak house in Brighton has been the talk of the town. So for us a perfect time and venue to try out . We were very pleasantly greeted by staff to a beautiful, well designed and visually appealing decor . Our server Megan was very pleasant and then Kristina presented the menu and did a nice job. We started our evening with the Beef Welling Bites which were outstanding , the beef was tender, seasoned perfectly and the puff pastry was delicate, airy and nicely prepared. My wife then ordered the Reserve Salad and I had the French onion soup .The signature salad lacked taste , had virtually no dressing and my wife didn't finish it, nor did a customer next to us. My French Onion soup , enthusiastically described by Kristina was very average at best. It lacked cheese and onions. Keep in mind 3 weeks ago I ate at Deans Italian Steak house in NC . They brought out razor scissors to cut the most amazing blended savory cheeses on a French Onion soup I have ever had anywhere. The Reserve has some work to do to be worthy of such enthusiasm for their French Onion soup. For dinner my wife ordered Sea Bass and I had the aged NY Strip with the Romanoff Potatoes. My wife's sea bass was prepared , presented and taste was to her liking . My NY strip was prepared perfectly med rare and very flavorful. I am very critical of Steak, the taste , preparation, and presentation at an expensive steakhouse. I love beef and have been very fortunate to dine at many of the best acclaimed steak houses in the US . Kudos to The Reserve on their aged NY Strip, however the Romanoff potatoes were just luke warm , they lacked the savory taste described on the menu and I would not recommend that option. Side note, the metal dish they were served in didn't compliment the class they are trying to emulate. To close out our dinner , Megan with her awesome enthusiasm talked us into the Bread Pudding and Home Made Cheese Cake . Megan did great, but the Bread pudding doesn't hold a candle to St Elmo's Steakhouse in Indy . Sorry , this is my benchmark on bread pudding. The Reserves was very dense and dry even with the Grand Marnier sauce. My wife's Home Made Strawberry cheesecake per my wife needed to have the option of extra sauce ( at NC ) it was creamy but lacked the compliment of more sauce, so she only ate half and she loves cheese cake. Over all our impression was : The Reserve is trying hard to replicate a 5 Star high end steakhouse. The ambiance is very nice , first class , the menu is very nice with many high end options to complement an expensive dinning experience. However the choices we made for the price we paid for small town we felt was average. We were hoping to leave in my opinion with a "Wow ...I would go back for that ".... Mind you we both love good food of all origins , it doesn't have to be expensive to be worthy and we are not food snobs, but we expect good service and we never mind paying more for the whole dinning experience . Lastly , I am not a fan of rotating team members serving a table. Assign one waiter or waitress train them to be the best at all aspects of the menu , have a sommelier to address the wine list or the manager but we had 5 different people attend to our table. Megan and Kristina were just fine. I hope The Reserve takes my feed back as a way to improve. They just opened so I am sure I'll be back . Rules, Rules, Rules My wife and I just moved into the Howell area and was given a gift certificate as a house warming gift. We decided to go on Thursday (10/10) for an early dinner with my son who was visiting and take advantage of happy hour shown on the web site. We came in around 3:45 and were greeted and asked if we had a reservation. I told them that I didn't feel a need as open table had multiple times slots after 3 open. We stated that we were there for dinner. We were seated in a small dining room facing Main st near the reception. We were greeted by the wait staff and were asked if we had been there before (no) and were given a thorough overview of the menu. Upon completion we were asked if we would like to have a drink to start. I asked at that time about happy hour and was immediately told that it was only available in the other room six feet away. We were the only one in the dining room and only two other tables in the other room were occupied. Why couldn't the server accommodate our happy hour request? It's a rule. Should we relocate to the other room for happy hour and appetizers and then return back to the dining room for my meal. We stayed out and ordered a beer and Old Fashion. The drinks arrived and we ordered our meals, Bread, 3 shareable sides (Truffle Mac, Creamed Spinach and Loaded Baked Potato) along with a Wedge salad to start. We waited for the Bread to arrive and when inquiring I was told that bread only comes out with the salad. Another tule. It took awhile for both the bread and salad to arrive. As we ate my son noticed that there was a piece of styrofoam floating in his drink. Upon showing it to the server she stated that it was an insulating separator for the large ice cubes used in the drink. She continued to state that they had a new bartender. They took away the drink and made a new one that was comped. Good solution. Our food arrive and I have to say that the two ribeyes and filet we order were outstanding and cook perfectly. The Truffle Mac and Creamed Spinach was also great. The Loaded Baked Potato while also delicious, it was not sized as a shareable item. Medium baked potato at best. But again the food was very good overall. At the completion of the meal I was presented the check. $266. I provide our gift card $300 and included another $20 cash, a $54 tip. The server came back to the table and told me that I can't used the gift card towards a tip. Another rule. The certificate stated goods and services. I have never had any other establishment not take a gift certificate for the complete bill. Shame. As I stated in the beginning, we are new to the area and was hopeful that we found a restaurant that we would frequent often as we do go out a couple of times a week. We are one and done and will look for an establishment that can provide a great customer experience even if a rule or two is broken. read more

The timing of food brought out was a long wait. The restaurant was not busy. The service was good. The food was sub par and expensive. I got the sea bass and it reminded me of what I would buy frozen at Costco. My husband got the prime rib and it was just ok. There are only two salads on the menu, Caesar and wedge. I personally love a good salad with dinner. Chances of us going back are probably not. 200.00 is a lot for sub par food. read more

Disappointed last night. My wife and I were looking forward to a nice meal at The Reserve in Brighton. We are big fans, like the food, drinks and the ambiance. Sat at the bar, got a water, but for some reason we still can't figure out, were ignored for about twenty minutes despite multiple servers working behind the bar. Ended up walking out and having a nice meal at another place a couple doors down. Disappointing and not what I would expect from a top drawer joint. Fabulous food with top flight service! We were given a quiet spot in the midst of a very busy restaurant. It was a memorable experience !!
