Oh my goodness, we hit the perfect spot for breakfast during our visit to UC Berkeley. We ordered two Mexican hot chocolates and a quesadilla, which was large enough to feed two people...although my son didn't want to share it. Ha! Abe is know around the area for being creepy. I did not know this until he cornered me alone in his store after "closing early" and tried to flirt with me for fifteen minutes before i had made a strong enough excuse to leave. Now I have heard from many others that he does this frequently especially to college students. Real shame because I have come in before with male friends and enjoyed the smoothies. In short: it's a great place to eat for women in a group or with friends but if you're alone it's worth it to go literally anywhere else on Euclid. read more

TL;DR: super friendly staff, good sandwich options, a little pricey I'm always a fan of supporting local businesses and Abe's is just testament to that! Abe's Cafe has a wide variety of sandwiches salads to choose from for your lunch needs, as well as occasional specials that are sure to impress. One of the things that really makes this business stand out from others is its amazing service. Abe and all of the workers are extremely friendly and welcoming them and I think that made all the difference for them. I got the Roast Beef sandwich, an item on the special menu at the time. ROAST BEEF SANDWICH (4/5) - A ton of different ingredients, including avocado and arugula - A little strong with the onions - Really like the choice in bread - Not super huge in size, but comes with a side salad Truthfully, the sandwiches can get pretty pricey. My roast beef sandwich came out to $9.50, which is comparable to Mezzo on Southside. I don't mind all that much because it's a local business, but that may be something to know for some customers. Got a large latte this morning and its less than subpar - bitter and bland but they charged $5.25. I should have gone to blue bottle.

Came to Berkeley for a COVID-19 staycation, and enjoyed a DELICIOUS veggie burrito and latte for brunch at Abe's. One party is allowed inside at a time in adherence to social distancing. Ordered at the counter and waited outside for the food and drink to be ready. Hand sanitizer was available at the door. Fast, friendly service as well as amazing food! I tried the tostadas de tinga and I must say they are so delicious I went back the next day for seconds. The quality of their ingredients is fresh and the taste of their food beats the cafes around. Just the right amount of spices. Their food is not bland at all. I highly recommend the tostadas the tinga they aren't that spicy, just a minor kick of spice. I tried the ginger mint iced tea and my friend tried the watermelon agua fresa. Both taste fresh. All of the staff here is friendly! read more

Abe's is new on the block, and already a local favorite. Abe and his family own and run the place, and they are polite, friendly, and the food is yummy. My favorites so far are the mole quesadilla, tamales, and peanut butter smoothie, and I am excited to try more! The coolest part is the creative wall where you can color and make your mark, and Abe's ever present smile. I love this place! Come in and listen to some fabulous music and chow down! Digging this new north berkeley spot. I recently had the steak sandwich, which the woman working the register said was her favorite and it didn't disappoint. It was a good portion of sort of a bulgogi cut of steak one well toasted bread with a fairly large salad on the side. I'm interested in their tacos and the like as well. The breakfast options also seem solid. They also cater events so it might be a good alternative to the tried and true berkeley student meeting options. read more

I tried Abe's tostada today and it was quite delicious. It would have been 5 stars, except a piece of lettuce was hanging off and touching the table, which didn't look too clean. I sat outside in the rickety chair, under the leaky awning. The food was great, the ambiance, not so much. Typical Berkeley hole in the wall in that aspect. We came to campus for an admissions meeting / campus tour, and we were lucky enough to eat at Abe's Cafe for breakfast beforehand. I used to come here quite a bit when I worked a part-time job nearby in one of the computer science buildings. I would come here with my friend and co-worker, who was great friends with the owner, and he would greet both of us with such friendliness! But the next time I went by myself, he didn't so much as smile or say hi - I can only assume he just didn't remember me even though I went there often. That made me a bit sad lol. Other than that though, the BLT was always one of my favorite sandwiches to get, and the cold brew tastes fantastic. Not typically a huge coffee drinker, but it was really refreshing and rich! Prices are pretty standard for Berkeley, but portions are large enough to fill you up. I haven't been back since the owner was a bit cold to me the last few times I went, but the food is homey and worth a try if you're in the area. read more

This place is the best.... everything I've ever had there has been excellent. The veggie breakfast burrito is my favorite thing there, and it has been my go to lunch meal ever since i moved to Berkeley in 2018. The chicken tostadas and the chicken tinga are also excellent, as is the copa sandwich. The coffee game is also strong. Abe is super creative, always trying new things with his sandwiches, drinks and specials. And him and his staff are the friendliest people ever, who have brightened my mornings regularly for the last two years. read more

The reason I come here is for the breakfast burrito. Abe is a nice guy, but he's ripping everyone off. The breakfast burritos are mostly potatoes and cost over $7. Maybe he could "go the extra mile" and put two whole eggs in there (why be so cheap? actually; I'm not even sure if this qualifies as being cheap, since eggs are around the same price as taters), and half the amount (or less) of potatoes. Oh, and the salsa sucks. You'd do better w/ tapatio. In fact, the lunch items I have eaten also suck. The salad is boring, the quesadilla w/ mole is super fatty and tasteless. I haven't really eaten anything that I liked here, which is why it fits perfectly in the Euclid eatery trap. My theory w/ all the potato drama is that Abe is worried that everyone in Berkeley is getting scurvy. Looking at the other reviews, it appears that the Berkeley kids drink the Kool Aid. read more

I had the Tinga de Chicken tostada, which was cooked and presented to perfection. Don't pour the hot sauce in it, even if it's temping, unless you are absolutely sure. The spinach and pineapple juice was refreshing and interesting. The watermelon juice with chunks was the most refreshing fruit juice I ever had. Cozy cafe with friendly staff. I'm reviewing this right now because I'm craving Abe's in a boring class, so I'll be heading over there after. I've had the Abe's bagel probably like 6 times. I know, this review may not seem great because I've only had this one thing, but the coffee is great too! Lattes, mochas, cookies, all great. I know I should try the breakfast burrito or the steak sandwich but I literally can't not order the Abe's bagel. It's just super delicious! Cream cheese, egg, bacon on a perfectly toasted everything bagel. I make it around this area every couple of weeks for work and today I was pleased to see that the barista who essentially ran Nefeli Cafe next door has opened his own little shop. A small menu with some sandwiches and really good coffee. Nefeli has always had far and away the best coffee on the block, but Abe will give them some competition. I had a chicken melt sandwich from Abe's and it was very tasty. Lots of flavor and fantastic bread. The best deli - style sandwich on the block (believe me, I've tried them all). If I had to pick on something, I'd says the chicken was a tad dry, but the flavor of the sandwich made up for it. Excited to watch this business grow and evolve as this is a great example of the American Dream at work! read more

I was in the area and decided to try out Abe's Cafe for lunch after a quick Yelp search. In all honesty, I was going to go to The Stuffed Inn but the line was too long and Abe's Cafe was my next choice. But to be clear, there's nothing second rate about the food at Abe's; it's great. Food: I got the Pambazo sandwich (potatoes with chorizo, sour cream, queso fresco and chipotle aioli all on a salsa roja-dipped bun) that came with a small green side salad. Not sure if the salsa always comes on the side but it has a bit of kick to it, so I asked for it on the side. The sandwich was incredibly flavorful and I recommend it. I would say, don't order it if you're wearing white because while the bun dipped in salsa really kicks it up a notch, it is messy and your hands will be stained red. (Like when you eat wings and need a wet wipe after.) But the mess is worth it. I also got a strawberry smoothie (strawberries, soy milk, cinnamon and other stuff I can't remember.) For me, the smoothie left something to be desired. I think this is because I don't tend to drink soy milk, so it wasn't as flavorful to me and is probably just a personal preference. I did enjoy the hint of cinnamon which was an unexpected surprise. (Side note: the woman next to me got the tostada ceviche and it looked amazing! She said it was awesome and now I want to get that next time.) Service: I would rate this 6 stars if I could. The guy (maybe he's Abe?) at the counter was great. He offers you a sample of their housemade drink and remembered my name from my credit card and asked how everything was later. He offered me a complimentary cup of coffee, which I believe is offered with any meal ordered. And he even offered steam milk for it. Very friendly. The customer service really set this place a part for me. Atmosphere: The place is tiny. It maybe seats 10-12 people inside and there are a few tables outside. It is quaint but welcoming. There is some cool chalk art on the wall that gives the place character. I would say that the place could use a cleaning. The windowsills by the window table were pretty dusty. That probably is my only complaint about the place. TL;DR: Tiny spot with flavorful food and top notch customer service. read more

Awesome little place on Euclid; I really feel Abe's fills a niche spot that was missing on this end of campus. Great atmosphere and decor inside, and also clean. Very fair, affordable prices. Pretty expansive menu with honestly excellent combinations of flavors and selections! Good wifi; just enough seating; non-wobbly tables!!! So far I've had he lox bagel sandwich + capers, the caramel latte, and the green smoothie + blueberries - grapes. The sandwich ($6+tax) was super flavorful, and all the vittles were sliced super thin like they should be! I'd say all it needed was a little more cream cheese. The caramel latte ($3.75) is rich and Abe poured it with beautiful skill right in front of me. Bonus: the standard is 2 shots which is awesome and for some reason not as common out here. The smoothie was AWESOME, super super fresh and clean tasting; perfect consistency and they don't use any super sugary soft serve or anything. Definitely coming back for the lox salad and breakfast croissant sometime, oh and the PAMBAZO!!! read more

Came here with my friend and we were both really pleased with everything. I got the Mexican wedding cookies, pambazo, and the fresh juice Abe had that day. It was a good portion size and I was very full by the end of it. The pambazo came with a salad and it was the best pambazo I've been able to find in Berkeley. All of it was so, so good and Abe and his sisters are so incredibly nice. My friend got a steak sandwich and a caramel latte and it was delicious. Definitely coming back here! read more
