NY style Reuben made with a mix of corn beef and pastrami
    Gary H.

Wow! While in Scranton on business, the I visited Abe's Kosher Delicatessen & Restaurant for lunch. This downtown Electric City eatery has a NYC vibe, complete with somewhat unfriendly staff - not a smile to be had. So why the wow? Their Reuben made with a mix of corned beef and pastrami, NY style (10oz) may very well have been the best reuben I've eaten. The rye bread was perfectly toasted, moist and not dry. The meat was incredibly flavorful and tender, and the sauerkraut was plentiful, with the perfect balance of tang and flavor. It was an easy 10 out of 10. If you don't care about friendly service, but are looking for an awesome sandwich in Scranton, this place is for you.

    Oooory goooey hot brownie

If I could give 10 stars, I would Abe's Deli rivals Carnegie and Katz deli !!!!' The potato pancakes are to die for light and fluffy yet the perfect crisp.my husband had hot pastrami on toast it was juicy and seasoned to perfection I had Liverwurst absolutely awesome and we were lucky enough to have a hot gooey brownie. Jennifer our server was right on top of everything she anticipated our needs before we even askeda MUST TRY we will definitely be back!!!!!!!with its laid back New York vibe Renato the owner makes you feel at home!

Great nostalgic and classic delicatessen vibes. Amazing and attentive service with hometown charm. The cornbeef was so pull apart tender and half sour pickles with a nice crunch!

Service friendly...Rueben was great! Pastrami was big and thick but the Reuben was better!

Thanks to my fellow Yelpers I was able to find an authentic Jewish deli on my way to NYC in Scranton Pa, our midpoint. We stopped for lunch. There is street parking near this more than one hundred year old business. Step back in time, take a seat and wait to be amazed both by the food and the wait staff. There are plenty of old favorites like corned beef and Rueben sandwiches (they are huge!), knishes, smoked whitefish matzo ball soup and pastrami (are you hungry yet?!) and also middle eastern delights. Since I am a sucker for Middle Eastern food, I ordered the Middle Eastern sampler, which given its price was less food than the Middle Eastern platter. It was enough food for an entire day. Of course, I had to eat it all and could barely eat dinner that night. I had a choice of two salads, and selected the chick pea and the quinoa, both with enormous portions. This was served with baba ghanoush, hummus and very fluffy and delicious pita bread. My husband just had to try the potato pancakes in addition to his Vegetarian Platter, and we were served three pancakes the size of my head so I felt obligated to eat one. Perfect! The food was great and our waitress was very helpful, explaining the various tributes to The Office around town after we inquired. On our way in, we passed by Dunder and Mifflin streets! The restaurant most likely has not changed since it opened in 1908. Scranton is lucky to have such a great place!

    Smoked turkey on rye

We noticed that this place is highly rated so we picked up sandwiches on our way to ski at Montage. The service was friendly and speedy. My husband ordered a Smokey turkey sandwich on rye and I ordered the most popular everything bagel sandwich with smoked salmon, capers and lto. The sandwiches were very good but we would make adjustments when ordering again. The turkey sandwich needed a deli mustard and the everything bagel had caraway seeds which overpowered the sandwich. I wanted a salt bagel but the deli does not make them. Overall we were quite happy with our and look forward to our next sandwich.

Reuben is worth the money and street parking. Nice place, friendly and clean. Quality meats that have great flavor.

I had the best Reuben sandwich ever at Abe's. The next time I go traveling across the country, I'll be stopping by Abe's.

I'm confused. The name says KOSHER but the photo of the menu shows you have cheese and bacon and sausage, etc. Is this a kosher restaurant or isn't it?

I ordered a Bloody Mary, but nobody knew how to make one, so I canceled it. The bathrooms were stinky and full of flies, with a fly trap sitting on the sink. The counter looked like it had been wiped down with a dirty rag. Our omelets came out greasy, my wife's bacon was forgotten, and my utensil roll had no fork. My bacon, avocado, spinach, and tomato omelet had rock-hard avocado slices and undercooked bacon mixed with bacon bits. Potatoes were just okay but came with no condiments. I barely ate a few bites before I was too grossed out to continue. When I told the server, she just said, "I'll let them know," and still handed me the full check -- no apology or discount. We left cash and got out. Will never be back. Avoid at all costs.

They also carry Rotunda Brewery beers, which is one of my favorites from Hershey, PA. Service was pretty good - it took a little bit to get our checks and then wait for her to come back to get our money. There is some parking behind the building, but there is also street parking. From our experience, we would definitely eat here again.

New Yorkers love their delis, and if just half of them are like this one, I can see why. JJ Delicatessen has an excellent assortment of meats, cheeses and dried goods, many from European countries like Germany and Poland. My girlfriend and I ordered sandwiches on a Saturday morning. We had to wait a little over twenty minutes, and the woman advised that next time we call our orders in ahead of time because the hot sandwiches take awhile. So that's your tip for the day. But they were worth waiting for. Fairly priced, excellent quality, and came with a few sides. I got the Polish sandwich special and my girlfriend got the Mediterranean sandwich special. There is a small seating area in the deli, but we took them with us and ate them in the car. It was a great lunch that we ate right before an afternoon of hiking at High Point State Park in NJ. Highly recommend this deli!

It seems like this is something of an institution and even for first-timers like us, it's not hard to see why. It's a European-leaning local deli that is clean, well stocked with interesting goodies, and that's is a cozy dining room in the front end of the shop. The two ladies we interacted with were fairly friendly and helpful, and after an agonising few minutes looking at the menu, we decided on the Polish and Italian sandwiches (vs heroes, which are bigger, cost a bit more, and are served on a roll). What I liked was the fresh tasting pickle that comes with the sandwich. In fact, the pickle may have been my favourite thing, period. The macaroni salad and potato salad were enjoyable if not particularly memorable. Now, the sandwiches. They look great, delicious even. We could tell they were made with care. From the first bite though, so I could think was, why's this SO salty? To this day, we're not sure what the culprit(s) were. Without the saltiness, I think they could have been delicious sandwiches. Perhaps this is how the locals like it. Maybe this is some sort of traditional way to prepare these sandwiches. All I know is that it traumatised my taste buds so much that I didn't have an appetite for another meal for the rest of the day. And of course I was quite thirsty for a few hours afterwards. I hope they keep improving and stay open for many more years.
