This place is like a breath of fresh air in the mundane food scene at Wilkes Barre, PA. Writing this review gives me a nostalgic joy :) Except the shabby parking spots that are tough to maneuver during winter months, they don't have any other cons. This itself says so much about the restaurant. Food is consistently good, staff (including the owner) take the time to greet the customers & make them feel comfortable and service is very quick (Less than 20 minutes) My favorites were and still are falafel and mamoul cookies. In fact, I tried mamoul for the very first time here and got instantly addicted. They're shortbread cookies (made with a special impression) filled with either dates or fig paste. Not overly sweet and made with the right consistency, I highly recommend them. Prices are fair and although they have a dine-in area, last I checked, they allow only takeout. And, their timings are suitable for lunch and early dinner, so plan accordingly. read more

Stopped into Pete's Place to get a smorgasbord of Middle Eastern staples the other day. I like to get a variety of homemade dishes, sides, dips and ingredients there, including the pita bread and some of the candies, little treats and desserts that they carry from other parts of the world. The baba ghanouj is bangin'; that's the first place I ever tried it but anything I've had since then, just doesn't cut it. The baba ghanouj is light and fresh, unlike store-bought brands that can sometimes taste metallic or bitter. Add the meat pie for a well-seasoned update on the pasty we grew up with (apparently the Cornish pasty is a protected food in the EU, like champagne or asiago, who knew). read more

I popped in for a lamb gyro to go. It was prepared fresh and while I waited for it, I was asked if I'd like a beverage. Nice touch. The gyro was a very good size on a pita that looked like it was handmade (i.e., not "assembly line perfect"). Well stuffed with lamb meat that looked almost like it was julienned with yogurt and onions and tomato. The lamb was a bit dry and seemed like it might not have been freshly cut from the doner. Other than that, it was tasty and delicious. A pretty good portion. I'd return to Pete's. I saw a bowl of hummus get delivered to one of the tables and it looked great. read more

Pete's is a small, family run restaurant serving excellent Lebanese food. My wife and I stopped by for a quick bite before a hockey game and got exactly what we were looking for, great hummus, falafal, tabbouleh, salads and chicken. They also serve lamb but we were eating light so didn't try it. We also had three of their many desserts, the walnut baklava, anisette cookies and date pastries. All were homemade and sensational. The dining area is pleasantly appointed, the service is fast and friendly, and the prices are modest. They're only open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so come for lunch or an early supper. If you like Middle Eastern food, you won't be disappointed. BTW, I'm a tough reviewer and reserve five star ratings for the absolutely best eating experiences. Don't be put off by the fact that I only gave Pete's four stars. If we lived in Wilkes-Barre, we'd eat there often. read more

Went to Pete's today for lunch, the service was great, very attentive. I ordered the fattoush with lemon garlic vinaigrette and it came out perfectly. I always order fattoush and most places kind if get it right but not entirely. Either the dressing isn't lemony or not enough pita, Pete's got it just right along with insane portions. Visiting family and friends in NEPA and a friend of mine for 45 years suggested this little restaurant knowing how much I enjoy Middle Eastern food! What a gem in the Diamond City! The food was very tasty and they have a great selection on food! The dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) were some of the best I have tasted. The hummus was fresh and flavorful. I had the lamb gyro and the lamb was cooked to perfection and the sauce was absolutely delicious! My friend Sue had the kibbi, it too was in spot on with the spices, it came with refreshing tabouli salad and dolmas. They also have an American fare, but to be honest I did even look at that side of the menu, but if it was was made as well as the Middle Eastern god, I am sure it was just as good! This is a great family ran restaurant with Pete Jr serving as our attentive waiter, always making sure we had what we needed, friendly smile and great customer service. This is the best middle eastern restaurant around here. I've tried almost everything on the menu. Lately I've been ordering the kibbi platter which includes a large portion of kibbi, stuffed grape leaves, hummus with fresh pita and tabouli. Not at all what I expected. I order the lamb kabob. It was VERY over-seasoned leading me to believe it may not have been fresh. Rice was so-so. To-go box felt almost empty and checking the contents made my stomach drop. Bottom of the box was visible in parts, no hummus, no salad, some old (hard and chewy) pita. All for the price of $13! Pete's Place is a charming little Middle Eastern restaurant . The people are very friendly and the food was excellent. We had the Stuffed Grape Leaves and Baba Ganouj for appetizers. Our entrees were the "Eggplant Supreme" and the special of green beans over rice. All were very good. Desert were cookies called Mahmul, filled with dates or figs and strong Turkish coffee. The almond cookie and baklava were also very yummy. The pita is second to none. We were told it is baked by a relative that owns the Atie bakery on Hazel Street. No alcohol but the food is good. Great family run place and the service is always good......when they get to you. The last 2 times I've been there I have waited way over 10 minutes for drinks, but they do acknowledge us. The male server is very nice though, he just needs some sense of urgency. I get that he is alone and had a few tables, but 10 minutes for drinks.....he needs to learn to multi task. The food at Pete's is always freshly made and delicious. Portions are large and prices are reasonable. My go-to for lunch is the kibbie-hummus-tabouleh wrap, with a side of the yogurt sauce. Really delicious. The pastries (baklava and cookies) are freshly made and really good. Not sure if the extra cookies I got to bring home will survive the afternoon in my office. I don't think I can accurately describe how wonderful Pete's is. I've been coming here for 13 years, and it just seems to get better every year. I'm from a Lebanese family ( so I take my Lebanese food very seriously) & we eat at pete's almost every week. Mona individually makes every meal, and she does it so well that it might even give my grandma's Lebanese food a run for its money! The food was a decent 2.5 my opinion but for the price it's a 2. The waiter was very good though, better than most. Sweet and attentive. He gets a 5, but I don't rate yelp stars for restaurants on service I rate on food. I actually feel bad not rating it higher since the place was cute and clean. I think the area in Pennsylvania in general isn't too competitive in culinary arts so to say, but I grew up in a place that was/is so I guess I may be a bit much of a food snob for this way. The food here at Petes place was better than most restaurants in the area however Lamb in gyro was a bit on the dry side although the sauce saved it. Good sauce. The pita wasn't as good as I was expecting. The hummus tasted a bit too much acidic .... garlic taste in it was good. The pita served with it wasn't good at all. Ran into this place online and saw the reviews and had to try it. I brought my mother with me on a lunch date and we absolutely loved it! The tabouli was amazing and the grape leaves were perfectly wrapped and delicately portioned we also had the lentils and the smell was terrific!! We will be returning! Pete's Place is pretty fantastic. I thought my sister was mumbling when she kept saying "Pete's Place" for lunch, and I kept asking "Which pizza place?!" like a crazy person, until she explained that Pete's Place is far from pizza and is actually authentic Lebanese cuisine. My sister and I love Mediterranean food. We love making it at home, and we love it even more when someone does the cooking for us, especially when it comes to those mouth-watering, but labor-intensive desserts like baklava. The staff are so friendly and service always comes with a smile, and I just really enjoy that as a customer! The grape rolls are something Skippy (my sister) and fight over. You MUST try them! I also love the falafel, gyros, tabouleh and babaganoush. This is great food to order with a group and share bits of everyone's food, because it's all exotic and distinctive and just great to share. As I've mentioned in other reviews, I'm well traveled. The best falafel I've ever had was served at breakfast at my hotel in Egypt, but Pete's Place comes darn close to that heavenly dish! We never waste a drop of the delightful hummus, and there is never anything leftover. So delicious and very very well priced! I could eat here every day. read more
