When my vet retired about 2+ years my dog was almost 7 years old. I heard incredible things about Abingdon Square veterinary group and that's where we went. In the 2+ years that we were there we thankfully we didn't need to see Dr. Park very often,we liked her and she was kind and competent. I called two weeks ago on a Monday when my dog was exhibiting pain, limping and trembling. I called and was told Dr. Park was no longer with the practice, Abingdon never bothered to inform me, truly ridiculous. I was also told they had no available appointments and recommended an ER. When I requested a follow up appointment I was curtly told they had no appointments available all week, again this was Monday early afternoon. I will now be going to another vet so unless you want to pay $850 for an senior annual wellness appointment but can't get an appointment when you have an emergency stay away, it's a disgrace! read more

I move around a lot and have been to a few too many vets with my dog. I only have wonderful things to say about this clinic. I had to call the front office a few times and they were amazing with what I needed and communication was great. I am taking my dog to Hawaii and there are a few things I needed them to do - and they were nothing but world class in assisting. If you travel with your dogs out of the country or into a places tough on animals entering - youll know the forms aren't easy and the requirements are endless. Anyways this place is great. Best experience I've had so far with an animal clinic and incredibly grateful with Dr. Alison Reichard and the nurse who took care of my cat Boris. Everyone in the clinic was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We never felt rushed and the doctor addressed all my questions and concerns. Dr. Reichard was our first vet when we moved to the city in 2020 but we lost track of her when she changed clinics, the time in between we visited multiple places but were never really satisfied. Fortunately we were able to track her down here and I cannot explain how grateful I am that we were able to connect again. She's is caring, honest, experienced and ethical. She won't make you or your pet to go through unnecessary procedures and expenses. They are upfront about what's need to be done and their services are reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend anyone with a pet to make an appointment here because the space is beautiful, clean, and the team is great. Their location is not the most convenient for us, but it's totally worth the trip. read more

I have been going here for a few years. The service levels seem to be high quality as far as I can tell, but as a new pet owner, there's a lot of "precautionary" advice that can seem quite daunting and perhaps overkill. I will say that I started going to other vets for more routine check up work as there's quite a price premium here. For example, I took our dog Rex (3 yr old) to Petco on Broadway for a bordatella vaccination, heartworm/tick test, DA2HPPv vaccination and leptospirosis vaccine, and a wellness exam for $105 total. Unfortunately, they did not offer the ProHeart12 (heartworm) shot, so I went to Abingdon to get that done. A week later, I came in to just get the ProHeart12 vaccination. They reminded me Rex was overdue for his other shots and I sent them the Petco records and declined the other services as I was just coming for the shot. Emailed them 2x with this specific information. I arrived on time a week later and the ProHeart12 shot was $91. They did another wellness exam on Rex without my consent and charged me an additional $99. I questioned this and they were adamant that they had to do an exam. I understand the vet did the work, but the fact it was just done when I was clear with the 1 shot request was off putting. I questioned the bill and the woman took my credit card saying she would talk to the manager. When she came back, she had already charged me the $190 total and said it was a part of their practice to redo wellness exams. When I have spoken to them on the phone, they are always thoughtful, helpful, and patient. My toy poodle needed dental surgery, and I was nervous about the procedure. Dr. Park was very kind and professional. She was very sweet to my dog and explained the details of the procedure. It is great to know a veterinarian who has a special interest in small dogs. On the day of the procedure, the nurse explained that they would keep in touch with us throughout the day and update us on how our pup was doing. Dr. Parks called after the surgery and let us know how it went. She provided details and explained follow-up. Long story short, just go here!! Dr Parks is extremely knowledgeable and pointed out things no vet has ever mentioned to us before. The vet tech we had is literally born to do her job, and kept my girl calm and happy. Checking in and out is a breeze and I've never had to wait. It's clear by the way the staff interacts that everyone at ASVC works together as a team and genuinely cares for their patients. My personal story: I have a 9 year old pug and was going to a more "popular" vet after moving to the city 7 years ago. The other vet misdiagnosed lung cancer, refused to continue antibiotics / steroids and told me to put her down. I'm so grateful someone from the neighborhood recommended me to come here for a second opinion. ASVC sent X-rays off to AMC to review for an extremely fair price, which is an awesome service to have. The new diagnoses was rare and a death sentence, but Dr. Parks supported me in the decision to make her comfortable instead of pursuing a risky surgery. She was honest that she'd only seen one other case of this condition and was realistic about end of life, which was greatly appreciated. We continued medications, which were 2/3 the price of the other vet. Dr Parks fielded multiple calls from me over the course of a month when I was losing my grip and just sobbing. The level of compassion was through the roof and by some miracle my little one pulled through!! We just returned a year later for an annual checkup and I'm impressed all over again with the attentiveness and care. I started taking my golden retriever, Tipper, to this clinic when it was still owned by Clayton Kimble, DVM; services there were extremely reasonably-priced because he owned the building--a different building, between Jane and 12th (or in the neighborhood of BeJelfth, as Fran Lebowitz called it back in the 80s when all the new trendy nabes were popping up.) I went to them for several years, and Dr. DeLorenzo was the one who detected Tipper's liver cancer; because of this diagnosis happening before she became terminal, we had two reasonably healthy years with her. Because the cancer was inoperable, we chose the holistic route and that bought us time. I recently came back to this clinic again--after a hiatus of several years--because my terrier Corky was having symptoms which have all pointed to a diagnosis of spinal stenosis. This is heartbreaking and after the pain was so excruciating it made him self-mutilate, I brought him in on a Saturday. We decided it simply wasn't humane to keep him alive when he had to be kept immobile and still the pain was excruciating; after heart-wrenching goodbyes, I said I was ready. She anesthetized him, and explained to me each part of the procedure of euthanasia. It still hurts me to think about it and I miss him terribly, but I know I did the right thing; I appreciate Dr. DeLorenzo's--and the whole staff's--handling of the situation. read more

This review is mostly for Dr. Reichard who has been treating our cat Bubba for almost 4 years, but ASVC has been great to us as well! Dr. Reichard has helped us through managing a cat with severe allergies, has helped to diagnose and understand how to treat cat asthma, and was VERY patient with all of our anxious questions about the allergies when we were first figuring it out. She truly cares about her clients - both animals and humans - and goes out of her way to research and understand exactly how to treat cats (and I'm sure other animals as well) who require a little more attention. I love these Vets, ALL OF THEM!! It has a "country Dr." Feel to it. Ive seen almost ( if not every) Vet there and love them all! They are thorough and do what's NECESSARY as opposed to giving 3 different medications as my other vet did. They are reasonably priced for a city vet and I always feel I got what I paid for. They can do x rays there and sonograms ( they have someone come in a 1 or 2 days a week ) and they do surgery. If they think the surgery is beyond their expertise they recommend someone excellent. Scarlett ( my Redbone) has had several surgeries there and a Cancer Surgery at Blue Pearl ( which they recommended) They are patient, kind, always follow up and no matter how many times I call for a RE-explanation they willingly and patiently oblige. I give this practice my highest recommendation. We brought our puppy to Dr. Dianne DeLorenzo as a new patient in 2006. Over the course of our dog's life we encountered the routine things (ticks, hot spots) and a major cancer ordeal, all of which Dr. DeLorenzo handled with grace, kindness, and unfailing medical expertise. I remember when Drs. Goldberg and Burdon started out as Dr. DeLorenzo's protégés, and they are equally gifted and capable. Our dog passed away in August after nearly 16 years of life, and Abingdon Square Veterinary Clinic showed us tenderness and compassion, complete with a condolence note and a donation to the Morris Animal Foundation in our dog's memory. I was a loyal patron of Abingdon Square Vets when the great Dr. Diana DeLorenzo owned and ran the practice, but now that it's in different hands, it's a whole other story. And not a nice one. I'm never bringing my cats to them again. My fifteen year old Siberian developed diabetes and they never even spoke to me face to face, or monitored his sugar for any time. They gave me directions to give him 3 units of insulin and when he got home, he had three seizures and ended up at the Animal Medical Center for a 48 hour glucose level test (which he should have had when he was first diagnosed.) And this week, my daughter brought her sick cat in, we could tell something was wrong--he wasn't eating and he was vomiting. They examined him and said they didn't feel anything and that he didn't need blood tests or x-rays. Three days later we just dropped him off at the Animal Medical Center where they told us he had an obstruction and hospitalized him immediately. He probably needs surgery. BEWARE THIS IS NOT THE OLD PRACTICE--THE NEW PRACTICE IS VERY SLIPSHOD AND ALSO MORE EXPENSIVE. read more

I just got a new puppy and did a ton of research when selecting a vet. I decided to go with Abingdon square after reading numerous glowing reviews online. There are many vets closer to where I live but I will happily hike across town to see doctors that are invested in the health of my puppy. The vet spent thirty minutes at my initial appointment talking about everything from food to training and everything in between. A week later I got a follow up call just checking in to ask questions and give advice. I read pretty much every Yelp review for every Vet on the west side of Manhattan before settling on Abingdon and it was absolutely the right choice. We've been to Dr Burden, Dr DeLorenzo, and Dr Seaward (thanks to our crazy schedule - btw they're super accommodating and have great Saturday availability) and they're seriously all amazing. Bear was a puppy when we first brought him in and we got amazing advice from the Drs there and from their head trainer Lois. Lois is the best!! She gave us a lot of helpful reading material and helped us out with some private training sessions. They've fielded more than a few crazy phone calls from us and reception always checks with one of the doctors before promptly calling us back. I really appreciate that they've reassured us many times for 0 cost. We have a dog that's loves going to the vet which says it all I think! Can't recommend them enough. read more

I am so, so glad I found Abingdon. My dog sees Dr. Seaward who is very friendly, knowledgeable, and communicative as she does her exams. The philosophy at Abingdon is practical care. They are completely welcoming of conversations with you about what care is necessary and what is nice to have. They don't make you feel awkward for asking. As a freelance writer, I want to do right by my dog but I also am sensitive to walking out of the office with a $400 bill for a routine visit for tests and vaccinations. At Abingdon, they will give you their recommendation but also will educate you on a range of options. This was a breath of fresh air compared to past clinics which basically presented a treatment plan as if it were the only option, and it felt embarrassing to ask them to explain whether there were other options, like I were committing some grave social offense. At the clinic I'd used in the neighborhood previous to Abingdon, I'd walk out with a $400 bill for routine care (exams, tests, etc.) and not really know what hit me. I knew I was getting good care, but there were several instances that made me question whether things were being ordered or asked for because they really were the best for my dog, or whether it was partly that and partly about making money. Here, I actually feel like they are talking to me and letting me make decisions vs talking down to me. It really does feel like they're all about what's best for the pet. I took my 7 month old yorkie there for a check up. The staff was very friendly and Dr. DeLorenzo was very attentive, I could tell she genuinely cared about the well being of my pup. Very sadly and completely unexpectedly, I suddenly lost my puppy when she was struck by a car on the 4th of July. I was absolutely grief - stricken at the loss of the sweetest little yorkie. I had to contact the vet to let them know she wouldn't be returning for the follow up appointment. Dr DeLorenzo called me back herself, and I also received a card expressing the deepest sympathies of the staff of Abingdon. I recommend taking your loved pets here for quality and loving care. Dr. Shorenstein has cared for my three year-old French bulldog, Charlie, since he was a puppy. As is common for the breed, my wonderful dog has many health issues, mainly due to allergies to many things. Dr. Shorenstein cared for Charlie at a multi-veterinarian practice, on the UES, near my home. When he began his practice in the Village I was very sad but figured it would not be possible for me to get to the Village for Charlie's care. That resolve did not last long, as Dr. Shorenstein's care of Charlie is so outstanding that it quickly became clear to me that Charlie and I would become happy camp followers and relocate to Abingdon Square Veterinary Clinic! Dr. Shorenstein is an excellent, smart, data-driven, and conservative doctor. He has seen Charlie and me through many problems that, thank goodness, have eventually been resolved. In addition to Dr. Shorenstein's wonderful care of my dog, he has given me confidence that we would eventually get to a diagnosis of problems and find solutions. I am so grateful for that. I have not yet seen other of the veterinarians at the clinic, but would have no reluctance to have Charlie seen by any of them. The staff people are really great and convey a sense of joy in their work and happiness to meet their patients, old and new. When we get to West 10th Street, Charlie takes over and heads for the stairs: very nice. read more

I've been looking for a vet like Dr. DeLorenzo for a long time. My dog has had three previous vets in the the three years I've had him. The first was extremely condescending to me during examinations and provided inadequate care, telling me that there was nothing he could prescribe my dog for his motion sickness other than a tranquilizer that didn't properly work. The second was my mother's vet in NJ, who set my standard for veterinarians by working in a clean office with friendly technicians who provided many treats for my baby and did everything they could to make him comfortable. Unfortunately, she died and we moved onto the next clinic in NYC who, while friendly, did not provide the above and beyond service the previous vet had. Abdington Square does much of what my previous vet did. It has friendly receptionists and technicians who gained my dog's trust instantly by feeding him treats. Dr. DeLorenzo was fantastic, telling me that their goal was to have their patients suffer the least amount of stress, which included providing treats during examinations and procedures, such as vaccinations and the taking of blood, as well as using minimal restraint. She encouraged me to bring my dog over even during non-appointment times so he could create positive associations with the office and its smell. Also, it turned out that my dog needed his teeth cleaned, and she laid out for me all the options we had, while assuring me that their patients are always monitored while under anesthesia. I am very excited that we finally found a clinic that clearly cares deeply about their patients. Now all I have to do is find a groomer who does the same! read more

So far I am very pleased with the Abington Square Veterinary Clinic. Dealing mainly with Dr. Goldberg. Now, as a non-vet I am of course not qualified to rate how they practice veterinary medicine. However, as far as I can tell they are completely on the ball. Their prices are what you expect from a NYC vet, but I think what sets this vet practice apart is their attentiveness. They call back. They let you know what's going on. They spend time with you. They seem to genuinely take an interest in the animal and in the owner. Just a small example: I came in to get some pills for my cat. No big deal. I had a question about the side effects, if any. The front desk person gave me an info sheet but also a veterinarian came down, sat with me and explained the side effects to me. I also really like (again, not a vet...) the very cautious approach Dr. Goldberg is taking with the medical maladies of my older cat. Prevention, trying to head off more serious problems. Sensitivity to cost. Realism. Honestly, that's about all you can ask. read more

I can officially say this is the best Veternarian . I have two cats and one dog they all have anxiety but my younger cat has severe anxiety. Usually she will pee, poop, throw up, or pant when she has to go to the vet. At all the other vets I have been to I would have to clean her up in the bathroom but that all changed when I went to Abingdon Square Clinic I was about to go get her cleaned when Dr. Golberg got her a towel and wiped her clean they even went out of their way to sanitize and clean her kennel. At the end of the visit they also were so kind to wash off the rest of the pee off of her. By that time my cat was much more comfortable that she even showed her belly. We just moved to the area and didn't yet have a vet, when my kitty developed some weird bumps on her neck. I'm a nervous mama, so I immediately checked Yelp and chose Abingdon Square based on reviews. I'm so glad I did! They got us in the next day with Dr. Rose Burdon, who is a fantastic vet. You can tell she really loves animals. She spent nearly an hour with us, doing a general initial visit and taking a look at the bumps. Dr. Burdon took a very cautious approach to my kitty's care, suggesting that we start slowly by changing cat foods, before we do anything like shots or a skin biopsy, which I very much appreciated. It turned out it was indeed just her food, and the spots were fine. They asked that we come back in two weeks to take a look at how it was progressing. Dr. Burdon was out, so we saw Dr. Goldberg, who was equally capable and caring. I couldn't be happier that we have this great clinic right nearby. read more

I would give this practice more stars if I could! I'm a new pet mom to my now 9 week old puppy (got her at 8 weeks), and completely clueless when it comes to vet recommendations, but asked around to other pet parents and everyone had this practice as a recommended practice and I'm glad I listened. Every time I've called, I've spoken to extremely friendly staff. Even on the first day when my puppy was going bizerk and wouldn't let me finish my paperwork, the staff stepped in to scoop her up and calm her down to let me finish the paperwork and teach me a thing or two about calming a hyper puppy down! I met with Dr. Burdon who was super sweet with my pup, she did a thorough checkup and was so gentle with my little one and Zuri took to her right away. You can tell she has a huge affinity to pets and puppies! She explained everything thoroughly about the puppy, the next upcoming milestones and things I need to be aware of raising a puppy in NYC. When my puppy developed an ear infection. Dr. Goldberg saw her and was also super gentle when it came to checking out my puppy. It was painful for the puppy but she helped make it as pain less as possible. She also gave me suggestions on how to administer ear drops on a very squirmy puppy who wanted anything but ear drops! I know it's still early on in my history with this practice, but from what I've experienced thus far I'm glad I made the right choice. read more
