As a medical professional, I went to purchase ems supplies for my family. As this was the nearest supply store in my area, and the reviews made it seem, they were an affordable and accessible option. What I found instead was a set of shears, a few rolls of gauze, and paper tape for gauze came to be over $60. EXTREMELY disappointed with the markup. God help anyone looking to get basic sodium chloride at 100ml... $25 a bottle. Price gouging was horrendous. Could not recommend less. read more

I love the fact that when I was seeking a specific item that they had the item in stock and that was not the original communication from the salesperson. Gerald was the salesman and he made sure that what I wanted was available. The item I needed required collection of information about my weight and height. After collecting that information from me, Gerald told me that he would call me back and asked for my telephone number and name. Twenty minutes later, I received a return telephone message where Gerald confirmed that he had the item I required. I immediately purchased the item and could not quite decide if I would attempt to get someone to pick up the item or whether I would have it shipped to me. Being disabled, I really needed someone to bring the item to me and to take it upstairs, a task which I couldn't complete because of my disability and age. After discussion, Gerald promised me that I would get the item on the same day as I bought it if I were to pay a very minimal delivery fee. I agreed and the item was delivered and even taken up my stairs which I could not have accomplished. Service and knowledge of product were excellent from Abel Medical Supplies. I highly recommend them. This business is aware of the needs of its customers and does not mess with your time and energy. I rate this as an #1 business in its area of expertise. This review is solely based on the service I received while there this afternoon. I went in this afternoon looking for a special cushion for a friend who had recent hemorrhoid surgery. The man who was working at the time said they were out of stock and only had the floor display available for purchase. Because we were unfamiliar with the product, we began to ask some questions ---which were apparently unwelcome on behalf of the employee. He answered them not only rudely, but sarcastically. At one point we asked if another product he had in the store could serve as an alternative to which he rudely cut us off mid-sentence stating he knew all the functions of his products and that our suggestion wouldn't work. Because we needed this cushion ASAP and because there aren't many medical supply stores in the city, we asked if there were other stores...he smirked and replied "other stores?" --as if we were asking him the impossible. At this point, we were fed up with his attitude and flat out told him he was very rude and provided zero customer service. He smiled, and waved us goodbye as we left the store. The store has many products which I'm sure are great for those who need them, but I'm not too keen to return any time soon. I was very pleased with my recent visit to Able Medical Supplies. I was looking for an ankle brace and I was referred by Walgreen's pharmacy. First of all, I walked into the store 45 minutes before it opened. I didn't realize it wasn't open, but the friendly man--who'd just shown up with his lunch--welcomed me in and stopped what he was doing to help me. They had the exact brace (air cast) I was looking for and he said it was the last one. Without hesitation he proceeded to put it on my ankle to not only make sure it fit, but also to teach me how to put it on. He also offered to make a copy of my prescription and print a duplicate receipt (without me asking) so that I could take care of the expenses with my insurance. He also didn't charge me tax I think because it was a prescription. I highly recommend Able for any of your medical supply needs and I'll definitely be back if I need anything myself. read more

Earlier this year, I burned myself in the kitchen pretty badly. I went to the doctor the next day with multiple, large blisters on my wrist and a lot of redness: second degree burns. I was given care instructions and supplies to help me over the next week or two of healing. "You'll have to your own if you need more" As the week wore on, I started to become concerned that I'd run out of bandages, gauze, etc. before I was completely better. The problem was that the supplies were hospital grade. They didn't have anything like them at the local drugstore. I went searching for a medical supply store, and of course, it was Sunday and places weren't open when I needed them to be. Enter Able Medical Supplies. It's a small store in the Richmond filed to the brim with medical supplies that you'd expect to see squirreled away in the annex of a doctor's office. The owner was the only one working that day. He was friendly and conscientious. I'd brought the samples from home so I could try to match them with whatever was there. It looked extremely promising. Gerald, the owner, was able to identify exactly what i had. What he had that would help. What he couldn't pull from his well stocked shelves, he was able to place an order to get in a day or two from his nearby warehouse or distributor. Great service. Prices were comparable to what I had found online, much better after factoring in shipping costs. While I don't want to need anything more than a Band-Aid in the future, if I do need something more serious, I'll be going back to Able Medical Supplies. Highly recommend it. read more

This store packed with every type of medical supply/durable medical equipment you could ever need. They also have trained kinesiologists/PTA there to assist you in choosing the right item(s) for your needs which is helpful. Verses other places where you may not get trained professionals to assist you in selecting the correct item. Some items carried were: Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes, braces for any part of the body (wrist, back, neck, knee, etc), shower seats/chairs, incontinence supplies, Jobst & Activa compression stockings and diabetic socks, you get my point. Nice to have everything under one roof so you don't have to go to multiple places. Kudos to them for being very well stocked! I also noticed some items that I had priced elsewhere were very marked up, so search prices before purchasing. Braces & canes seemed comparable in price to places like Walgreen's, CVS, etc. Please note: They DO NOT directly bill medical insurance for any item you purchase even if you have a prescription from a doctor (-1 star). You have to buy what you need and deal with getting reimbursed from your insurance yourself in which you may not get much reimbursement as you're not using a preferred provider (if applicable w/your insurance). I wish they would consider billing insurance because this is what kept me from doing business with them. The gentleman who greeted me was nice enough and knew quite a bit about what I needed and prices for them, but once he informed me they didn't bill insurance, he just automatically assumed I wasn't going to purchase anything and went in the back to make phone calls, basically dismissing/ignoring me (-1 star). I didn't think this was very professional as he didn't know if there were other items in the store I may have picked up or found I needed for my/my family member's care. Overall, I think this is a convenient, comprehensive place for all your medical supply needs and I may return if I needed an item not covered by insurance after I did my price comparing. 3.5 stars total. read more

These guys were great! I hurt my knee over the weekend, and needed crutches in a hurry. Even though they did not open until 1pm, someone met me at the store at 10am so that I could get to a meeting on time. Gerald is the man! I bought a pair of crutches from this place and walked out with an education on how to fit and use crutches properly. Adjusting the multiple points on the crutches helps to avoid fatigue, soreness and perhaps further injury. Who would have thunk? Gerald is a licensed P/T and if you buy from him you sort of get a free session as long as the people behind you wating for their free session are not complaining. Saturday, 11:00AM. Wanted to rent a knee scooter. Before I could do that, I needed to fight for parking on this packed street (oh how I love SF!). This is one of the few establishments that offers a flexible rental plan: one can rent for two weeks whereas other stores conventionally force the monthly plan. And then...? Gerald and his staff are friendly and knowledgeable of their products (I had many questions about scooters). They offer unique rental plans that other stores don't. Came in to this store wondering if they would carry TED Stockings that I needed for my injury and they had it! Gerald, was really welcoming and even helped to find what I needed and measured my leg to make sure I would buy the right size, I had no idea size was important to make the stocking effective. Prices are a bit high (compared to ordering online from amazon) but hey when you need something instantaneously that is for your well being it is worth it. Very poor customer service via phone and in person. The man literally said we were wasting his time. When he finally did find what we needed, he quoted a price 10 times what we normally paid trough other vendors. But because we needed the product, I went by to pick up a couple to get by. I've been walking by this place for years wondering how they stay open, and found the answer as I crutched in for a look-see recently. Twice. Plan: Find out if they sell tips for crutches, bookmark for later should I ever need them Reality: There's a more chic and civilized cast cover other than trash bags and duct tape? Why yes, I'll take one of those. There's a knee walker (looks like a three-wheeled scooter you put one knee on) for sale or rent? That'd be cool if I wasn't expected to practice walking with the bad foot. That, and the hills. In other words, they kinda have everything, and I have a feeling that if you couldn't find what you're looking for, they'd try their damndest to try and get it for you. Cuz they're nice like that. I alluded to the fact that I went here twice in two days. That's because once I got home and opened the cast cover, I thought, "There's no way in hell THAT cast cover is going to fit over MY fat cast and fat thigh." I was then consumed with buyer's remorse, because "all sales are final." Unsettled with the $35 I just quite possibly threw away, I went back to ask Gerald some questions. He assured me that it would work, and sure enough, it did. I mentioned they carry practically everything - they're more than happy to show you how everything works too (within reason), and answer any and all questions you have. Just went there today for some adhesive remover for my mom. The guy working here had 2 options to show me, liquid in a bottle or single use pads. I checked out the other medical supply place on Geary but they didn't have anything comparable. I went back and bought the liquid. The bottle says $22.55 but I was only charged $21 plus tax! This review is based on customer service received on the phone. I called today looking for a walker for a friend. A man answered the phone I described the walker, including features, (seat, hand brakes, four wheels, foldable) height, weight capacity, dimensions, and and seat measurements. The man told me that this description was "too general". I replied "OK I'll give you more detail. The man cut me off and put me on hold. When the man came back on the line I attempted to provide him with additional detail to cure my "too general" discription. He interrupted me and said "that's not necessary" I replied "well you said my first description was "too general" so I'm attempting to give you more detail. He replied "I didn't say your description was "too general" Then in an exaggeratedly slow and condescending tone he said: "What . . . is . . . the . . . height . . . of . . the . . . person . . . who . . will . . be . . . using . . the . . . walker?" I replied: "Please don't speak to me as if I am a moron" He replied "I'm not. I'm just speaking very slowly so that you can understand what I'm saying" I asked for his name. He hung up on me. It seems that this representative of Able Medical Supplies isn't interested in selling a walker . . . . I like to shop locally when possible but this experience with Able Medical Supplies encourages shopping with Amazon instead. read more

Found Able Medical through a Friend and was very satisfied with the product selection, product knowledge, and helpful customer service. Gerald really knows his stuff and was able to help me load up a variety of things to retrofit my mom's house after she broke her hip. Personally not knowing much about elder care, we walked though almost the whole store and Gerald took the time to explain the functional pros and cons of each item and wasn't pushy, even recommending that we buy some of the more frivolous items later after we'd given them more thought and took the proper measurements to ensure a proper fit. As a licensed practicing physical therapist himself, Gerald offered good advice on the best products to aid in rehab. He took the time to inquire about my mom's level of mobility, dexterity, and health post surgery. Gerald even offered to coordinate with my moms PT to make sure she got everything needed, correctly. Couldn't be happier. I know we probably could have bought these items on line, but it's like buying a pair of shoes. It's best to try them on yourself, walk around, sit on things, lean on them, and make sure it's the right one for you. Besides which, I always feel better supporting my local neighborhood businesses if price is relatively the same and the items are hard to ship. (Like my wheelchair.) As expected, parking was kinda nutty in the Richmond, so go there after the lunch rush and you should be fine. (oh, Gerald even loaded my car for me. What a cool dude!) I went in to rent a wheelchair for my ankle surgery recovery period. I'm supposed to keep my leg elevated for the next 6 weeks. Spoke with Gerald on the phone prior to my visit. Gerald was very friendly and helpful. He made several suggestions but after a lengthy discussion we had narrowed down to a wheelchair with a leg lift. Gerald made sure I knew how to open and close the wheelchair properly and made sure I was sitting properly and adjusting the leg lift to the right height. The lackluster website made me hesitant, but I am glad I made the trip. The store seems crowded and disorganized, maybe even outdated, but the staff exceeded my expectations. Not only did Gerald explain possible solutions, he allowed me to try out a few items, and never pressured me into making a purchase. He took the time to explain some techniques to decrease my pain. I originally really loved this place. Prices are great. Crutches and braces were cheaper than at Walgreens or other medical supply stores. Gerald is awesome. He knows a lot, and once I made it clear that I would not be taking his advice to quit playing basketball, he moved on to talk to me about how I could work to prevent future injuries. He has so much energy I almost couldn't keep up! But I have to dock them a bit now. I asked Gerald for a round balance board to use for ankle strengthening. He sold me a dynadisk. He's a physical therapist, so I was mistakenly assumed that he knew what a balance board for ankle strengthening was and trusted him. The dynadisk is a product that he is promoting heavily on his site and is not what at all a balance board. I discovered this after attempting to use the dynadisk to do my balance board exercises. To be clear, the ONLY ankle strengthening exercise you CAN do on a dynadisk is to balance precariously on it. This is much more safely done on a pillow. The air in the dynadisk, which is not all that inflated, moves so quickly that i barely kept myself from spraining my ankle again. I emailed Gerald, who told me that I could not return this product. I checked my receipt and noticed at the very bottom of the receipt that it says all sales are final unless the product is defective. So he would take it back if the manufacturer messed up, but because he didn't give me what he asked for he won't? I emailed Gerald again to make sure he understood that I wanted to return it and exchange it for the PROPER item that he should have sold me in the first place, but I haven't heard from him since. Granted, this is partly my fault. I should have known the product better before I purchased it, and I should have asked about the return policy. But Gerald shouldn't sell me an incorrect product as a physical therapist, and he should make the policy known a little more clearly. Customer service is first and foremost to me. I'll pay a tiny bit more to be sure that I don't blow $50 on the wrong item on a bad recommendation. Unfortunately, I won't be back. read more

having sprained my ankle a couple of weeks ago, my doctor prescribed a removable walking boot. he wasn't much help in directing me to where i might find one, so i referred to yelp and able medical supplies, with its positive reviews, seemed like the place to go. good thing i did! i showed the guy at the store my prescription which said "removable walking boot". he asked my shoe size and went directly to that section of the store. he told me he was out of my size. i told him i could go a half size smaller or larger...he looked at the inventory and pulled a box with a boot and said this will work. he then asked if my ankle was broken or sprain. when i told him it was sprain, he said you need an aircast and not a boot. he brought an aircast out and helped my put it on. perfect! not only was this the right support to stabilize my ankle, he saved me $$ 'cause the boot was double the price of the aircast. kudos to great customer service! read more

Wow. I thought customer service was dead! Not at Able Medical! My mom was visiting during the holidays and stumbled off a curb, breaking one of her foot bones (I'm an ER doctor, so I know this). As it was a holiday weekend, I definitely did NOT want to visit the local ERs with the masses, so I called to see if Gerald had what we needed: a CamWalker splint in the appropriate size. Upon phoning, I learned that Able Medical was actually closed that day, but Gerald asked what I needed anyway. He phoned me back after going to his warehouse to check his stock, and then offered to drop the splint off *at my house* since he was heading my direction anyway. One hour after after my first inquiry by phone, Gerald arrived at my house, deftly put the splint on my mom, and allowed me to write him a check. The price for all this was comparable to what I would have paid if I ordered the same equipment over the internet. I am very impressed at the outstanding and knowledgeable service and inexpensive prices at Able Medical. I will be a repeat customer and recommend them without hesitation. read more

I was not impressed with the rushed attitude of the gentlemen at Able Medical. I have worked with a lot of different athletic supply stores in my career and this was the worst. I was fit for a knee brace incorrectly, came back to resize and reorder (with a restocking fee) and then the brace did not fit again. In both occasions the service was so rushed that no real thought was put into what type of brace would work best or how to get the right fitting. When I tried it on they did not even bother to see how it fit. My physical therapist looked at the brace fit and there were some very easy clues to what was needed, which Able missed. Not what you expect from a specialty shop! Also, the prices are much higher than Bischoff's on Divisadero and Geary. read more
