Such kind people. I had a little dispute with gravity last week. I was sure I was fine, right? Urgent care said I might be fine and suggested I returne if I wasn't 100% Monday. Monday came and I was not 100%. Xray time! I am so not fine but nothing broken and no need for surgery. Urgent care suggested a visit here for supplies. There was drama in the tunnel! Drama! I made it to the island with 6 minutes to spare. However, parking karma was barely with me. I phoned from around the corner. The lovely gentlemen said they'd stay open for me and that I could use their sole parking space! Once inside they didn't rush me through selection and purchase. I have no idea this place was here in Alameda. It's not a big place, but they seem to have a lot of inventory and you can check it all out online before you come in. After being told by his orthopedist that he no cartilage left in his right ankle (due to an old injury), my husband finally agreed to consider a mobility device (accompanied by a disabled parking placard). I was afraid we'd have to go far afield but then in Yelp I found Bay Area Medical Supply - an easy 4 minute drive from home! That meant we could check out the options on a weekday late afternoon. I had planned on renting a knee scooter for a trail test but after trying both the knee scooter and the seated scooter my husband was drawn to the rollators. The very helpful Retail Manager Josiah Cruz explained the features of the models in stock. My husband was immediately drawn to the Human Care neXus 3 Rollator. That model wasn't available for rent so we bought it and loaded it into the back of our Prius - easy peasey. Josiah explained their return policy (20% restocking fee) and Kaiser Medicare reimbursements (or lack thereof) for DME (Durable Medical Equipment) to be used outside the home. My husband used his rollator on opening day of an exhibit in the City (quite crowded) and was delighted. Not only was his ankle not in pain but his lower back also stayed loose and he got in a short nap sitting in the rollator near the exhibit exit while I finished browsing. We needed a hospital bed delivered on short notice. Jeff at Bay Area Medical came through. He worked with us on the delivery logistics, came to the house and set up the bed seamlessly. We couldn't be there to meet him -- we were at the hospital and couldn't get away---so he did it all by phone. It was hospital bed first, paperwork later! Amazing service! We filled out the forms a few days later. We had the bed for three months and paid zero rental and a very reasonable delivery charge. Bay Area Medical handled all reimbursement issues with Medicare. Important to mention: one of the big medical supply stores in Berkeley that we called first was the polar opposite. Big upfront charges, charges to retrieve the bed, pay rental in advance and deal with Medicare on your own while you are trying to recover.... Found this local gem, right in my home town! My 89 y.o. was discharged from the hospital after a 3-day stay. Driving home, and we were quite concerned where we can find accessories similar to what she had at the hospital to assist her limited mobilities. We used to frequent Abbey Medical Supplies decades ago but, sadly, they are no longer around. We found this place via Google search, called and showed up the next day. Friendly, knowledgeable staff showed us all the selectioons of what we were looking for, helped us make the right choices, what best for our mother's situation. We picked up a bench for her to transfer herself into a bathtub with ease. We also picked up a commode for her nightly routine... Wow, such a relief to be doing all these in one place.
