This shop was recommended to me by a friend who, like myself, has just adopted a puppy. She told me that this place was amazing, that the owner was so helpful, and boy was she right. I noticed that other reviewers stated that he is opinionated and rude. I did not find that to be the case at all. Does he know about pet food, yes he sure does. More than anyone I have ever spoken to, including my vet. Does he recommend what he believes to be the best products for your pet...yes he does..and why would you not want that information. I learned more from him in 15 minutes than I have from my vet in 30 years, and the advise was free. I want my pets to be fed healthy food, pure food, not grains and byproducts which is what most pet food is made of. I want my food to be held to USDA standards..which the raw food I purchased from his is. He knows which food have been subjected to recalls and which ones haven't. I enjoyed learning from him. One of the things I loved the most about this store is that all the food is available by the pound. The food I wanted came in a 25lb bag..with two small dogs that would have lasted me years..but he pointed out that I can buy whatever quantity I want. Plus his prices were very reasonable. Yes he has his opinions, but what person doesn't that has been doing something for 30 years..I say listen, you will learn, and your pets will be happy. I wanted to try one of the locally owned, smaller pet stores. I imagined a quaint little pet shop with an owner who loved nothing more than pets and improving their health through diet and play. I have never been so wrong. The owner is an arrogant know it all who constantly berated everything I have ever done to care for my pets. Everything he said was a way to make me feel like I was a terrible abuser and needed to be locked up for the way I care for my pets. I can only assume that this is his sales strategy so that you feel guilty and buy hundreds of dollars worth of pet supplies. And you will pay more - for example, all Front-line products are about $10 more expensive than most places. Although it is convenient for me to shop here, I will never do so again. read more

I have been in this store three different times. The first time there was a woman there and she was really sweet and let me look around. The second time this guy was very rude and pushy, acting like a used care salesmen. I went back a third time thinking maybe he was having a bad day and ALL hell broke loose. I went in just to browse and he bombarded me trying to educate me on things that I already knew. I went in for the first time today. I was surprised that the man behind the counter didn't even acknowledge I was there. Then after about 5 minutes he bombarded me. Following me... then seemed to talk me out of everything I wanted to purchase. Then he asked me what kind of dog I had. Once I told him he went on and on about how terrible those dogs are. Love this place! I can get all my cat supplies and even wild bird food. Owner has always been helpful and I'm surprised other people are annoyed by his opinions. Honestly if you do your research a lot of vets are actually paid by some food companies to recommend certain food. I used to work in a pet store and its just something that happens in the pet food business. Also yes a lot of cat and dog food has a lot of crap and fillers in it, stuff they would never eat if they had a choice. So don't just blindly listen to your vet on every single instance. I found this place after being annoyed by another pet place in Edmonds and not finding answers as to why I couldn't find a certain product. I find the owner extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I had been giving my dog inexpensive food that did not have much meat in it, which created a skin problem for Jimmy. He was constantly itching, so I gave him medicine for years that wasn't good for him and was wrecking his immune system. By switching to meat he stopped scratching and is back to normal. At first I was jazzed to find this place for my dog. The owner seemed knowledgable and helpful and said that raw is the best thing for dogs to eat. He sold me cut up knuckle bone which my dog seemed to like and I bought a sample of the frozen raw stuff. I also bought a can of clearance food. So when I got home and looked at the date on the can it was 2 years expired! My dog experienced really loose stools after this so I decided to not return and now choose to shop at another store and I buy my dog the freeze dried raw food that you add water to. She does well on it. You can buy treats here but just check the expiration on the cans that they sell because I did feed my dog some of it and I don't know what exactly made her sick after my first and last visit to this store. read more

Went into this pet store a couple of months ago to buy some treats for our dog. The packaging had changed recently, so we didn't look at the expiration date right away .... when we did, it was over a year out of date, so we returned it to the store. Swapped it out for a new one and we were OK ..... that was in March, 2017. So now, it's MAY 2017 and we went to buy the exact same treats. I thought it was the old packaging, but didn't think to look at the expiration date until after we got home. We now live 25 miles further away .... I swear it's the same bag! WHAT? With a higher price too. For $16.99 you can buy treats from January of 2016. No thank you! Keep your receipts folks! They're required! Never setting foot in that store again. read more

I love this location, and all who work here. My husband and I continuously stop in here for advice. I first came here when our picky kitties were addicted to temptations treats, the (male) staff or maybe owner! gave me wonderful and educated advice as well as samples to try before I bought. Criticism was constructive and fueled me to make a better choice. Nothing like some of these reviews-helpful, knowledgeable, not pushy, and always kind. We now use a great European food we purchase in bulk that has really shined our kitties up and made them happy. Now I just walk in and ask for that red bag of European food with pomegranates in it, and he knows each time which I need;) Sometimes people who you deem different than yourself are the best to help you see a different point of view and learn new things even about your own choices for your pet. Extremely helpful gentleman at the counter. I was trying a new dog food and complained about my dog's chronic itching and he advised me against a medication (prescribed by the vet, and expensive!) that my dog had been on for years. He said it was causing a breakdown in the dog's immune system, and that I need to change dog food from a "meat-like" product to a meat and vegetable food. I only bought one can of food because my dog sometimes is picky but he scarfed it down, so I will be back for more. Absolutely wonderful advice. Thank you!!! read more

I have been going to About Pets for the last 6 months after several episodes of very serious dehydration and constipation in my Cat due to Mega Colon. I have tried everything that 3 different vets recommended but to no avail. I DO have a medical degree (MD) and find that both Vets and Md's don't often look outside the box to see if the info that we have received, both from our education and then what we learn from drug companies or even pet food companies is correct. YES, the owner of the store is very opinionated but I see that as passionate. Each time I have gone in to his store and I was the one who "talked his ear off" trying to learn more. I then go back home to do my own research and HE HAS BEEN RIGHT every time. It is for this reason and significant improvement in the health of my cat that I return time and time again. I agree with another post that he will open a bag and charge you for what you buy to make sure that you and your animal are happy with your purchase. Who does that? I can honestly say that I have referred many of my HUMAN patients to him and has helped with many pet issues that are often from a nutrition problem. There should be a zero star rating for a store like this. I actually made two trips into this store because I just couldn't believe it could be that bad. The first time the owner went on a rant about bad pet food and all the things I am doing wrong for my cats. I left feeling like I needed therapy. The second trip was just as bad. The guy was so rude to me and outright scoffed at me when I mentioned that I was ordering the same cat treats he carried from Amazon - as if it was stupid of me to save 20% on something I buy regularly. I agree that the people that work there have strong opinions about what your pet should be eating, but they were right. I went after hearing that gluten free foods would help my cat and they were extremely helpful and informative about options for my particular pets situation. After eating the food for about a month he was much better, he has been eating it for years now and is problem free. The only downside is that it is more expensive. Although, I think he eats less of high protein food than the cheap stuff. It's really nice to still have a neighborhood store who has experts than just another chain pet store. read more

I just moved to Washington from Ohio and stumbled upon this store on my way to the Alderwood Mall and have to say that I am SOOOO happy that we got here when we did and found it before they moved locations, else we may never have found it and that would have been a tragedy! Not only was the owner friendly, knowledgable and pleasant but the selection of food and supplies was better than any I've seen. I'm a definite fan and look forward to shopping there over and over again in the future! Highly recommend this pet store for all of your petcare needs....my pup gives this place four paws up for all the attention he got while in the store and for being introduced to a new food that he absolutely loves and is so much better on his sensitive tummy than what he was on. I went to this store because it's near my house. Been there twice now & decided I'm never going back because the owner of this store is such an arrogant jerk. The 1st time I went there he completely ignored me for 10 minutes while I waited for him to let me pay for a bag of cat litter. There was only one 1 person in front of me, why didn't he have his other employee ring up my purchase if he wanted to visit so badly with this customer? At one point I actually herd him say "most veterinarians don't know anything about nutrition." I thought really? I held my tongue but I really wanted to ask him WTF makes you more knowledgable than them? Where did you get the qualifications to start giving medical advice? He could have at least offered to give me a free sample of food (the attractive girl in front of me literally left with over 10 samples) Then instead of apologizing for making me wait he said nothing and instead gave me the stink eye for interrupting him with my throat clearing while he yammered on & on to the girl in front of me. Hey I'm extremely short and can only comfortably hold a 15 pound bag of litter for 5-10 min. I'm a fair person, so I gave this store one more try a month later. I went back to purchase litter again & commented that the glue at the top of the bags was coming undone & litter was spilling out. I went ahead and bought it anyway because I was desperate & didn't have time to go elsewhere. As I'm trying to leave he decides to start going on & on about how the Swheat scoop litter has defective packing (they don't) every time I have bought the same litter elsewhere at Petco the bags are always completely shut and I've never had problems with litter falling out've the S.S. bags until I bought it from here. Did he discount this "defective bag of litter" (his words) that I purchased? Of course not! Shame on me for trying to give this store a 2nd chance. This store is horrible - I would give it no stars. I wrote a review last night, but it never showed up. I went in last week to buy some dry cat food. I was speaking to the young woman who works there, the owner was in the rear of the store. I told her I wanted the rest of the bag and asked how much it would be. She asked the owner and I could see he was already perturbed to be bothered by a customer, of all things. When he told me 55.00 for the 11 pounds, I merely stated that I could get it cheaper on line. then he slammed the calculator, and yelled at me "Go take your stolen credit card and buy it from the _____ Mafia. I stared at him and said that is no way to speak to a customer. He then started towards me, screaming for me to get out of his store and out of the parking lot. I told him he was crazy and started walking towards my car. He ran after me and got right up into my face and said "get out of this parking lot or I will slap the ____ out of you." I was so startled I left. I should have called the police, because he was so threatening and psychotic. I think he store should be shut down and he should lose his business license. I am going to the BBB next to complain. The guy is crazy and the young woman that works there is in danger. She also doesn't know anything about the product sold in the store. Neither does the guy. Oh by the way, you can get the Wellness cat food, Original Core for $34 a bag from Wellness online. stay away from this store. He is horrible, and horribly overpriced. read more

I've visited a few times and each time has been great. The owner is quite knowledgeable and is eager to help. At times - it may seem a bit overbearing, but it's not meant to put people down as a previous reviewer seems to have taken it. Simply put, he knows his stuff. I love this place because I was having troubles finding food for my ferrets that they would actually eat and enjoy (they had been starving themselves due to 2 different "quality" ferret foods that they didn't like). I stopped here on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised at how helpful and knowledgeable the owner was. In no time at all - he suggested a specific CAT FOOD of all things to help my ferrets. I bought one pound of 2 different varieties and took it home. They liked BOTH but loved one more than the other. Woo hoo! No more wasting time or money on bad ferret food. Hooray - my ferrets have a ton of energy and seem to be as goofy as ever. In short - go there to try out a few different brands of food. Buy it by the pound (1 or 2 pounds) then once you find the right type of food - buy it by the half / hole bag to save money. read more

Yep, the owner is rude. I bought a harness from him and after ONE use the harness started to fray and come apart. I took the time to go back into his store and show him (the owner) because I though he'd like to know that the product was flawed. He looked at it and flat out told me that it was regular wear and tear. After ONE use? I don't think so. I can not safely walk my dog with this harness on again. And as much as I like supporting small businesses over corporations, I will not shop at About Pets ever again. He can keep his bad attitude and overbearing opinions. I recently bought part of a bag of Natures Logic Rabbit Dog food. Having sold a quality kibble dog food before I assumed the partial bag I was purchasing was fresh, and I was paying a reasonable rate for the bag not being complete. I was disappointed to find out that I paid $4.79 per pound for a partial bag and in addition the bag was due to expire in a week. An expiration date is important because most dog foods with high protein levels and fat will go rancid near or soon after their expiration date. Thus the reason my Golden Retriever has been burping, throwing up etc. I have been in About pets a few times over the past 10 years at 2 of his 2 different locations and everytime I do not look forward to getting into battle with the owner on which food for that day or week he likes or dislikes. Furthermore as a dog owner and he as a pet store business owner of 25 years + , I trusted him and his store to provide and represent food of Good quality and value. He has taught me a disappointing lesson that if he truly cared about your pet he would not be selling expired food and charge twice the price for what a smaller bag of that same food would have been priced at. I disagree with selling kibble by the pound out of a bag that is made to be sold as it is intended by the manufacturer with vin # and expiration intact. Keep in mind if there is a recall you have no idea what bag you bought from. Use caution when shopping in this store, check pull dates and don't believe everything you hear. The impatient idiot who stood in line clearing his throat should have just selected another bag of litter and quit being so critical. i've only been in twice so far, but both times the girl who works there was very helpful. she helped me realize that switching to a better food actually saved me money in the long run, since my pup wouldn't have to eat as much and i'd save money on vet bills. at first i stuck with my old, grocery store food, then after doing some research online i realized she was completely right. she didn't try to push the most expensive food, but was informative about which food my pup should have without going to poor ingredients or going too expensive. she gave me samples of everything. i landed on taste of the wild, and she even let my pup taste each of the foods to see which flavor she likes. their prices were the same as anything i could find online, but i'll be going back to about pets since they were so informative, plus i want to support my local small business. if you just want someone to tell you you're right no matter what, this might not be the place for you, but if you appreciate expert advice and tips on dog care, go to about pets. read more

There's something kinda off about this place. I've been in a few times. But I've found that their prices are about twice as much as stores like Petco or Petsmart. I can buy a full case of my favorite cat food brand at one of those stores for half the price that this place charges per case for the same brand. The woman who works here seems nice. But the owner is very unfriendly and abrasive with his customer interactions. He doesn't say hello when you walk in and he seems irritated if you try to talk to him. I had an issue with their card reader after trying all of the debit cards in my wallet and when I suggested maybe it was their card reader, he rudely insisted it wasn't and that it was obviously my cards. Then he asked me what bank my husband and I use and when I told him BECU, he said "Well I'm not surprised, they always have problems". Which is not true at all. This is literally the first time I've ever had all of my BECU cards decline on a card reader. He basically just blamed the problem on me because of my bank of choice. Which is totally irrelevant and none of his business. I just gave up and left at that point, realizing I didn't feel like paying over $50 for a case of 24 cans when I could just go to Petco and buy the same brand for $15 or $20 less. I will not be bothering with this place again, which is sad because they really do have an incredible amount of stock and they are local. But this guy should not be running a business if he's going to lash out at customers over really trivial things. That is never how you run a business.
