We saw this on the map and, without the benefit of checking yelp first, we stopped in for lunch. Chipotle tomato pasta, quiche of the day, salad sampler and combo soup / sandwich were all delicious choices. Country chicken noodle had a nice "kick" to it. Since there are so many reviews of the food, let me speak of the decor, I personally love it. It's quaint and eclectic, you first notice a wall of interesting books, old and new that are for sale. After your seated look around at all the carvings and art work of local artists. We were privileged to be seated by the books with a Cat in the Hat carving just above us. Visit the restrooms for more art, it's so unique. Now we have been stopping here for a few years as we travel from Utah to Colorado the food and coffee is and has always been good. We've tried several different items. The huevos rancheros are smothered in green chile, spicy and flavorful, Mesa Verde stack topped with a mound of chopped bacon. They have wonderful quiches and the Special of the morning was peach cobbler flapjacks, which were amazing. They make homemade breads and pastries. The cookies are fresh, big and yummy. Just Stop in! It's a steady flow of tourists and locals. While eating breakfast we heard 4 different languages being spoken. What a treasure this place has become. read more

July 2012 What a find. This little bakery off the main drag is worth locating. Hours are limited and they close at two so get there early. Context: we arrived at 1:47 on a Friday afternoon with a party of four. Atmosphere: the bakery is just before a creek through the town and along a tree lined street. There is some outside, shaded seating and eight or so wood tables inside. The place inside is ancient,with wood floors and high ceilings. There is a small selection of high quality used books for sale including sections on the west, gardening and a small fiction section. Service: we were greeted by a friendly waitress who explained that if we were eating in, we should take a seat and she would wait on us. We were pleasantly surprised because of the late time we thought they would want us to get the food to go. Throughout our visit, all the staff was friendly and accommodating and we never felt rushed. In fact, at the end I ordered some tea to go and they just charged me a dollar because I had my own mug. Food the menu has a selection of sandwiches served on homemade breads, pasta, wraps and special meals. We had sandwiches, including the most enormous BLT ever, it included ham and turkey and was easily enough for two, served with a citrus coleslaw, with tiny pieces of real orange, and served on toasted bread. A roast beef and cheese sandwich on sourdough was good, and so was a roast beef with green chili on toasted bread. All the sandwiches were good and would ensure our return, but the dessert bars and cookies were exceptional with moist oatmeal crusts and creamy fillings. They have quite a variety from a lemon blueberry with a rich cheesecake filling, to date, to their most popular, key lime raspberry. They also had the best burnt butter cookie. My only regret was I only ordered one. It was very crunchy, toasty flavored and like toffee almost. The only disappointment was the biscotti which had the texture of a dry cupcake. They had 12 kinds of organic teas. I only wish I had this bakery closer to home. read more

I have been to lots of good bakeries. This was a good bakery. For the food I would rate it a 4 but the service was really not good. I am sure it was just an off day but no one really seemed to care if we were there. I know some towns like that feeling of making people feel uncomfortable if they aren't locals but this was just uncomfortable. But the food is good. read more

O. M. Goodness. Every sense is catered to.. touch (warmth)... taste (oh yeah) .... sight (what a lovely atmosphere) ... sound (all the nice sounds of a friendly café) and SMELL! This place is a great stopover on the way to a day at Mesa Verde. Should we visit Mesa Verde again in the future, we'd stop by Absolute on our way. Environment: This restaurant is aiming for an eclectic bookstore/coffee house vibe, and it pulls it off. There's a ton of local flavor to this place, and not just in the food. If you took Poor Richard's in Colorado Springs and scrambled the bookstore together with the coffee shop, added a dash of chaos and an pound of woodcarvings, you'd get Absolute Bakery & Cafe. The tables are somewhat crammed together (and I found it odd to be eating with a bookshelf full of biographies within elbow's length) but otherwise it's a fun and pleasant place to eat. Environment: 4/5 Service: The service was not particularly above and beyond relative to the average restaurant experience. For example, I ordered a cup of black coffee and was given an empty mug, but no explanation that there was actually a coffee station set up in the adjacent room. I had to ask another server if someone would be along to pour it or what - at that point I was pointed in the right direction. Servers didn't check back with us very frequently, so overall it was a very basic level of service. Service: 3/5 Food: My wife and I each ordered the Mesa Verde stack (eggs, bacon, green chile, hash browns, all kind of mixed together). It was a hearty breakfast which actually carried us very well through the day at Mesa Verde. The green chile packed a punch but was not so awfully hot as to be unenjoyable. In fact, the more of it we ate, the less scorching it seemed, and that was a good thing. To cleanse our taste buds we ordered some miniature chocolate dipped macaroons and that was just what the doctor ordered - chocolate and coconut are a great antidote to the fiery green chile. They should be standard issue following any dish involving green chile! We also picked up a blueberry lemon bar to split while at Mesa Verde - moist and sweet, no complaints there! Fresh bread and great desserts to grab on the way out. Wonderful breakfasts! Very healthy menu choices! I recommend sitting outside. They have a few tables outside during the nice weather where you can hear and see the Mancos River flowing by. Our first time visiting & we LOVED it. The Lavender lemonade was a huge hit. They were kind enough to move us to a different table because my baby was causing a fuss. Our server was SO nice.
