I wish it had more cheese and creamier! I wasn't a big fan of the Argentinian Chipa cheese bread. It was very dense with bland lukewarm cheese. I kept searching for a good bite, and finally threw in the towel 1/2 way. It didn't have the fluffy texture with ooey gooey melty cheese that I was hoping for. I'm not an empanada expert, but I found these to be quite tasty! The pastry is the best part, it's light and very flaky, not the sturdy dough I was expecting at all. I got the combo, which includes 2 empanadas, fries, chimichurri sauce, and a nice sandwich cookie. I chose the Abuela Chona and criollo empanadas. I ate one and my dad ate one. Both have ground beef, I honestly am not sure which one I ate, as it seemed like all that was inside was ground beef, but it was nicely seasoned. It was hot! Fries were ok, nothing too exciting. They were also nice and hot, although a few were soggy. They sprinkle dried herbs on them, which is a nice touch The cookie looked different from the pic on the menu; it looked like a flat, white, unexciting disc. In real life, it is 2 glorious, light, melt-in-your-mouth shortbreads sandwiching a generous amount of creamy, rich, not-too-sweet dulce de leche. I highly recommend the alfajores! read more

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars because the empanadas here were delicious. Unfortunately everything else on the empanada plate that I ordered fell short. The good: empanada crust on the outside was perfectly crispy. I almost wished there was more crust than filling because it was so flakey and good. The filling itself was fine. Cooked ground meats, nothing out of the ordinary. On the menu it says chimichurri sauce was $1 so I didn't order it but I guess it came with the plate so that was a nice surprise. The meh: fries were baked or air-fried? They didn't stay warm and crispy for long. You basically have to eat them right when they're hot to get the best flavor out of them otherwise they end up tasting stale and bland. The alfajor cookie also tasted stale like it's been sitting out for a few days. Though it's my first time eating this kind of cookie, so I might not be used to the cookie texture. The service was great and the savory empanadas were delicious. We got the abulea chona & pollo ones and they tasted great. I don't know if it was an off day or this is how they are served. But we also ordered two of the pastelitos and it was not very good. The pasty was normal but the inside was filled with cubes of jelly instead of a smear of it. There is something about a puffed pastry empanada that is just (chefs kiss). The service was great, the lady even yelled after me when I almost left my drink. This review is for Abuela Chona's cart at the new Beaverton cart pod. Had the Choripan with Chimichurri combo meal. Service was fast and friendly. But what I got for $12.95 was unacceptable. On a good day, the meal was worth about $8 at best. Cold and very dry sausage (very small, maybe 4 inches,too). Red potato "fries" which were baked not fried that may have been good if they were freshly made, but they were cold and limp. The chimichurri was unlike any I've had before - good spice and flavor, but very dry. Like it had almost no oil in it. If it had more oil, then it could have made the sandwich better, especially with their dry sausage. And the price doesn't even include a cheap can of pop. The positive reviews tout their empanadas. IF I try them again, I'll look into those. They get the second star only because of the tasty dulce de leche cookie. I noticed the a la carte price for the cookie was $1.95. Abuela Chona is pushing Lechon entree prices at a lunch truck in Beaverton! Good luck with that!! read more

We were sad when they moved from Beaverton to Forest Grove, but NOW THEY ARE OFFERING FROZEN BAKER'S DOZEN! They are also offering delivery for free for the 4th of July weekend, something I hope, for their sake, is a one-time offer. For us, it is WELL WORTH the trip from Lake Oswego to pick up their frozen empanadas. Instructions to oven heat are perfect, and we are picking up several dozen at a time so one trip provides for 3-4 meals. And they LISTEN to their customers. Their online frozen ordering is new. The only time I write a review is when I love the food. Well, the empanadas did not disappoint. We tried the mixed beef, spicy chicken, ham and cheese, spinach and broccoli. They were all bomb dot com! The dough was flakey and the filling had really good flavor. The spicy chicken was my favorite but the star of the show was the chimichurri. I tried this place on a whim and felt compelled to leave a review because I think the woman who took my order and prepared my food could learn more about effective communication and setting realistic expectations with customers. First, when I ordered the spinach empanada, I asked how large it would be. The woman proceeded to demonstrate with her hands the size of what to expect. When I received my order, the empenada was small--probably about one third of the size that she showed me. I would have ordered more had I known that I would be receiving a meager amount of food. Second, I waited for a LONG time for my order, so long that I had to ask whether they forgot to make my food or perhaps left it in the oven too long. I was the only customer, so she could not use busyness as an excuse. The woman explained that they cook their empanadas fresh, which is fine. I think she should have told me up front when I placed my order how long a wait to expect. All in all, it was about twenty minutes until I got my tiny empanada. Finally, I paid for my food with Google Pay which allowed the business access to my email address. I would normally expect to receive an email receipt, but what I didn't expect was to immediately be added to their mailing list without giving my consent. When I arrived home, I discovered an annoying email from the business--that really pissed me off. Three strikes, Abuela. Okay. This place is FANTASTIC. The empanadas are freshly made and baked to order so I'm already a huge fan of that. They have a smaller menu but it's genius because it has something for everyone. I could eat the broccoli and spinach empanadas all day, everyday (and I probably will because this place is close to home.) But the best part of Abuela Chona is that the owner is so genuinely nice. Tony remembers people and treats them with so much respect. Beaverton has so much thai food and Asian cuisine, and although it's all so good, this place gives me the fix that I miss from living in Las Vegas and having so much delicious Hispanic and Latin inspired food. I will eat here at least two times a week until I move. I recommend this to everyone that wants some delicious smaller bites. Went to the new food carts in Beaverton the other day and found this place. Had their signature Abuela Chona which is meat and a little potatoes in a nice pastery crust. Perfect amount of crust, meat and taters and downed it with a stout. I went back for another one it was so good. Give the food court a try and go here if you love this type of food. Enjoy. read more

My boyfriend and I go here almost every week, sometimes twice a week because it is just incredible! The empanadas are the best around and very authentic. We usually get the chicken, spicy chicken, ham and cheese, and the abuela chona - always with a few chimichurri on the side (my favorite).
