After talking with someone about our previous experience and that they were going to address the issue. My mother and I decided to give Abuelo's another chance. One of the things that was fixed was the menu. Apparently they removed the term 'Chili con queso' and replaced it with 'cheese sauce' because my mother's quesadilla was topped with it and not only us but many people were confusing that with meat sauce (according to our previous waitress). I was glad to see that changed. Customer Service: We had Cely for our waitress and she was very friendly, polite and attentive. I never had to look for her. She stayed on top of things. - 5 stars Food: My mom got the Laredo and I got the Steak and Enchiladas. The steak was was flavorful and very tender. I got the cheese enchiladas with carne sauce. So delicious. On mom's entree, the taco had a half taco shell under it to keep the taco crispy and so it wouldn't get soggy. Tres Leches cake. They changed the cake. 3 years ago, right before I moved away, I ate here for my birthday and the Tres Leches cake was a finer cake while this cake is more dense. This is our go to restaurant. If nothing else sounds good and we just can't figure out where to go. We almost always sit at the bar, not in the bar- at the bar. We also usually go during happy hour. Everyday except Saturday and the hours are From 4-7 I think. Great food and drink prices. read more

I've tried people I've tried! I just can't. I can not like it. As hard as I have tried to like the food here I have officially decided that I do not like it and will avoid going here even more than I did in the past. If you like Mexican food you will probably like this place. But I like real Mexican food. I've tried almost every item on the menu except the fajitas and soups. I only like 2: the seared tuna and the mahi mahi with shrimp and scallops. That's it. everything else is ordinary and kinda bland. And one more thing...I have never left this restaurant without my stomach killing me. Went here on Saturday for a bday party and ordered the Cozumel enchiladas. It was crepes filled with guac and topped with a seafood sauce. I ate half. Not impressed. Now to put some positive energy out into the universe.... go here for the sangria. Awful last two times. Not going back. Chips bad, food cold and they changed their old great hot sauce recipe to a poor quality one. Ordered the stacked enchiladas and didn't even eat half. In the past we always ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp which they have taken off the menu. read more

Abuelo's is always DELICIOUS! They are always busy but you can wait a bit for a space at the bar! Quicker than other tables. Our food is brought out promptly and always tasty! We ate within an hour including appetizers! If you want spicier hot sauce ask for the habanero one. read more

I've eaten at several Abuelo's and none of them disappoint! My favorite is the seafood enchiladas followed closely by their fajitas. Yes, the chips and salsa are worthy too. Good service, good atmosphere and a full service bar, this is a terrific place for lunch and dinner; for yourself or large groups. It does get crowded - if you are going on a weekend, recommend reservations - and being prepared for a longer wait for your food. My recommendation is to go early for lunch or dinner to get the best they have to offer. read more

Open seating if you come early. No waiting. Seating in the bar is open. Waiter was taking order from us as we were seated. The bar has happy hour, if you are inclined. Chips, salsa and Queso is great. I prefer the old style salsa to their new trio. Matamoros is a favorite of the family, I like the Manjar with over easy eggs! read more

Absolutely will not ever go back to the Abilene location after calling in make sure we knew what their rules where about social distancing and masks and making sure we followed the rules. We waited for our waitress around 5 minutes no big deal but I'm unsure if she was just having a bad day or what but after she tossed the silverware I caught mine but the other fail into my husbands lap she gave us a dirty look and said "WHAT DO YOU WANT" as if she was getting on to us for bothering her. I have no idea what happened to her earlier to make her act like that but we said nothing and just got up and left. My husband spoke to the manager he offered another place to sit at that point we just went to go get a pizza. read more

We got the fajitas they were ok we also order the grande the best thing on that plate was the crunchy taco..... the service was decent. In town and friend recommended as we had a large group and needed a place could handle it. Typical Texas Mexican spot and decor. Super busy, as this is clearly popular with a repeat crowd. Solid margaritas and tall beers to start. Our group of us tried an array of TexMex dishes with no complaints. Service was excellent. Went there for dinner for the first time during this social distancing. The restaurant wasn't busy so it was to our surprise when they sat a party of 2 right next to us. The other half of the restaurant was empty and other tables were available. Thank goodness for their margaritas though. Tables were sticky though, needs better housekeeping... do better! read more

Abuelos is so far my favorite restaurant that I have been to in Abilene. The restaurant is huge with a Cheesecake Factory kind of feeling. I ordered a guacamole enchilada with grilled shrimp. It also came with scallops which I am allergic to and they took it off without a problem. Others in my party got fajitas which were delicious. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I had the bacon wrapped pork loin with cheese enchiladas. It was decent not anything to brag about. My wife and daughter had fajitas again rather a let down. My son had bacon wrapped beef that came to the table raw. Every serving of meat had a petroleum flavor. The service was pretty bad which would have been understandable if they were busy. The enchiladas, papas, queso, margaritas, and service are consistently very good. They typically accommodate large groups easily. Avoid the grilled chicken salad. It's awful. The greens are not fresh...or green! It was half white hunks of iceberg lettuce and the chicken didn't look or taste like chicken. The dressing is unlike any honey mustard dressing I've ever tasted; just wet and sweet.
