The enchiladas, papas, queso, margaritas, and service are consistently very good. They typically accommodate large groups easily. Avoid the grilled chicken salad. It's awful. The greens are not fresh...or green! It was half white hunks of iceberg lettuce and the chicken didn't look or taste like chicken. The dressing is unlike any honey mustard dressing I've ever tasted; just wet and sweet. Tried to ordered nachos to go and was told it would be 30 minutes to make them. Thirty minutes for nachos seems like a really long time. When I told the young girl to cancel the order, she said, "okay" and seemed happy that she didn't have to take an order. I think she needs some training in customer service. We stopped on our road trip to Lubbock because it says it's the best Mexican restaurant in the area.... This was really bad. The steak seemed like dog food and the chicken in the enchiladas had a really bad sauce. Our waiter was quite rude. It was packed and really cute inside so we held hope but it's very overpriced and honestly disgusting. read more

This is some of the best Mexican food we found on our travels through Texas. I had the tortilla chicken soup and helped my husband with the bacon wrapped pork medallions. Our server brought us their standard salsa, plus a trio of very delicious salsas (including a green tomatillo one that was outstanding). The interior of the restaurant is roomy, but is decorated with murals celebrating family, and has comfortable, large booths. While it sounds strange, they have fake trees lighted in red, which sounds garish, but really works well to give the large interior a sense of warmth. We would absolutely recommend this place if you are in Abilene. read more

My family of 8 just left Abuelo's very dissatisfied! We had to wait for over an hour for food. Our waitress barely checked on us. When we finally received our food, some of the orders were messed up, our waitress never came back to our table. We asked several waitstaff and hostesses to get us refills and fix food orders at least 3 or 4 times, barely got our orders fixed and NEVER got refills on our drinks. We asked for a manager 3 times. When a waitress brought our check out, wasn't even our waitress, we asked for a final time for a manager and stated we wanted something done about our check. We got some guy who wasn't even on the clock, wearing a t-shirt and jeans come and speak with us because the manager was too busy on the phone for over 15 minutes. The t-shirt guy stated that he would have to find out who the sever was and get the other side of the story. That doesn't matter when you've had terrible service and just want to leave a restaurant. We probably won't be back. They need to figure out their issues. There were at least 5 staff standing against a wall the could have helped at any point! Honestly, I love this place. My boyfriend and I go here so often because of the quick, friendly, and efficient service. The food is always hot and plentiful, the servers, waiters, hostess, and everyone are always so nice and willing to help you out any time you may need help figuring out what to order or what something is. The building is beautiful. You walk in an expect great things, but are sorely disappointed. The queso and salsa were really bland. The tortillas seemed like box store tortillas that were barely warmed up. The fajitas tasted like baked chicken. The interior of Abuelo's is so overdone it is borderline tacky. It's obvious why everything on the menu is so expensive, they probably still owe $ to the designer and builder. I mean really, a fountain when you walk in? This isn't a 5 star restaurant by any means. The real laugh goes to the bathrooms. I've seen better facilities in a Denny's, even gas stations. The food was less than average. I ordered their "classic margarita" only to have our waiter return minutes later to tell me they don't serve it anymore. Ok, then update your drink menu. I decided to try the skinny margarita, which is described as straight tequila and fresh squeezed lime. WRONG. A few sips and it was obvious they add some kind of artificial sweetener (splenda perhaps?) and imitation lime juice. My stomach and throat were in anguish. The waiter was kind enough to take it back, and replace it with the la grandeza. Still not the best but it worked. Tortilla chips and salsa, were ok. Except the chips literally smelled like sweaty socks after someone had played basketball for hours. The whole table noticed this. My boyfriend and I split the Grande combination platter. One beef, chicken, cheese enchilada, chile relleno, tamale, and crispy beef taco. It also came with guacamole, refried beans, and your choice of rice or... mashed potatoes? I have never seen any Mexican restaurant serve mashed potatoes. Everything tasted the same. The beef enchilada had less than a tablespoon of beef, inside a huge folded tortilla. The chile relleno consisted of a very tiny chile that was so rubbery it took forever to cut, and the fried coating had been soaked to mush from all the other items on the plate. I don't remember what the tamale tasted like because it was that forgettable, and the cheese enchilada was just awful. The only decently cooked item was the chicken enchilada, it was shredded chicken that actually had flavor to it. Guacamole so runny and tasted like it was from a can. The mashed potatoes resembled a paste with chopped up peppers mixed in and tasted how it looked. It was a good idea to share because I couldn't even stomach a quarter of the plate. I really cannot (for the life of me) see what all the thrill is about... this place has inconsistent service. . Manages to bring 2 totally differently different version of the same plate on the same table... SERIOUSLY???? NO way this can constitute REAL Tex-Mex cuisine that deserves a 5 star rating! It is a consolidated chain and it can be seen in the lack of love, key ingredient in the perfect dish. It feels just like costumers are but a number and therefore do not deserve the pampering and the respect they are rightfully owed. A fun place in Abilene to dine, Abuelo's on 14th Street! I hit it up with the crew of misfits over the weekend for a birthday party. I had a few chips and a couple on margaritas. I don't remember what the others had but it look good. Service was fast and friendly even after many drinks, LOL. I gave this place a 5 star review about a week ago. Well I guess they have hired new people or something because the service was awful! I ordered to-go and spoke with the most rude woman but I assumed she was having a bad day. I was ordering curbside, and my mom went to pick up the order, and she had to argue to get them to bring it out, even though the message says "they will bring it out to you." Finally spoke with Steven, the manager on duty who tried to make it better, but didn't. No discount was given, only 2 complimentary coupons for queso, which he did not sign. Then I had to call him back because they did not pack my tres leches cake. When he brought the cake out he was questioning the legitimacy of me not getting the cake to begin with. So we offered him the opportunity to look in the bag. He refused but still had a questioning look on his face as handed my mom the tres leches cake. I placed my phone order at 6:40 pm and was told it would take 20 minutes, but after having to argue to get my order brought out to me and having to argue to get the cake I already paid for--I didn't get my order home until 7:40 pm. So my order is cold and my experience was awful. Abuelo's has been better than this, but something was definitely off with the people working there today. Highlight was the sangria swirl but went downhill from there. The queso was bland and tasted like it came out of a jar. From the dollar store. Very pleasant waitress. Wife and I ordered fajitas for two with specific instructions to leave the green pepper due to an allergy. Of course the fajitas came with peppers and had to be sent back. Once we started eating after everyone else was finished, we discovered it was (again) bland. They took me here to try TexMex. We got the trio dip sampler. It was queso, queso + chili, and avocado cream dips. All three were really good. We also got chips and salsa to start as well. My main dish was the quesadilla el horno with papas & rice on the side. It's a different type of quesadilla. It's baked with cheese on the top. My favorite was the papas, which was essentially seasoned mashed potatoes with things mixed in it. As a potato lover, this was heaven. The waiter was incredibly nice too! 5 stars! read more

There are few times you go to a restaurant and everything is on point. When that happens, I usually attribute it to "that one time it was awesome" syndrome. However this abuelos, I have been to twice in one week - once on my way to Austin, and again on my way back. Fajitas were sizzling both times and the waiters were funny, nice and quick. Having grown up in Abilene, I remember when Abuelo's opened and people would wait up to 2 hours for dinner. But even though the "new" has worn off of Abuelo's I'm still a fan of this restaurant. First, you have to get one of their SWIRL margaritas. I like margaritas, but their swirls are the best. They are sweet, but not too sweet; sour, but not too sour. Second, their chips and salsa are always a crowd pleaser. And if you are wanting to splurge (on calories) order the queso with ground beef... YUM! On my most recent trip to Abuelo's I dined there when I was beginning a Gluten-free lifestyle and was pleasantly surprised by how accommodating they were for me. The brought baked chips and brought me a Gluten-free menu. My friend ordered the chicken fajita salad (which looked great!) and I had the jalapeno stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon (I was splurging) and replaced my sides with a small salad. Our service was great and the value is always great. My only complaint about Abuelo's is that if they are super crowded it can be very noisy. And as their booths can easily accommodate 6-7 people, the noise level can be annoying. However, I did notice on my last visit that they enclosed one part of the restaurant in glass--probably trying to make the place less noisy. All and all, I am a fan. Being BIG fans of Abuelo's. Always have been. But tonight, was beyond disgusting. Pitiful to be exact. Understood we showed up an hour before closing. But everything was disgusting and cold.Took 20 minutes if not longer to get drinks. Due to limited menu we were forced to choose between SEVEN items. Including appetizers, just to find out we were cheated HALF the menu. Then once we chose to complain nothing but excuses were given from everyone in the restaurant. The ticket value was $170.00, with minimal discount, still came out to $65.00. The quality of food served was equivalent to that of Taco Bell fast food. Food was cold, portions were smaller than usual and service was not up to par!! For being Father's Day weekend and anticipating a special dinner, this was far from our expectations!! I've seen a lot of mixed reviews for Abuelo's so it must depend on the employees working each day. We went on a Friday evening and it was packed but we were just in time to not have to wait for a table. Service was extremely speedy, drinks kept coming before we realized we needed more. Had a little mix-up here and there on our order but the place was loud and packed. I had the fajitas al pastor. It was just pork, supposedly marinated in some kind of sauce but they came on the hot pan burnt to hell, but I ate it anyway. It came with a single ring of pineapple from a can I guess. Kinda disappointed. Got the wrong tortillas and then got charged extra for the right ones. We tried to give them back but the waiter at the time said we could have them. Gee, thanks. The wife had the mega plate, enchiladas, tamale, chili relleno, taco, etc., and ate it all. She said the relleno just made her miss the ones we've had in El Paso and Roswell, NM. I love the thin chips and salsa, and the sausage wrapped in chicken from a previous visit, and that damn tequila cream on key lime pie is very tasty! Still somewhat new to the area, and after a few recommendations for Abuelo's, I had to give it a shot. My conclusion, it's just okay, not excellent. I had the Carnita Tacos which is supposed to be Abuelo's take on street tacos, but in all honesty, I like the street tacos from the street more, and they cost a lot less. The meat was over cooked, and the seasoning wasn't stellar. The reason I'm giving Abuelo's three stars is because of the margaritas and the service. The "Grande" is muy buena. I love their mixed enchiladas; all Tex Mex restaurants should offer this on the menu. If Taco Bell and Olive Garden had one too many vodka-redbulls while attending a self help conference and then bumped uglies in a dark alley, Abuelos would be their bastard child. This place is the size of a mall food court, oddly and elaborately decorated but so completely lacking in personality that it's a wonder more lawsuits haven't been filed on behalf of diners drowning themselves in the bland and soulless guacamole. Or in one of the Olympic sized water fountains scattered among the fake palm trees. The food is profit maximizing rubbish which neither tastes good nor nourishes and will have you wishing you'd never walked through the door. The good?
