If you need/want a comfortable stay at a hotel, this is not it. This is not it. I'm writing this review at 5 AM after having had very little sleep last night due to the super uncomfortable mattress. I honestly feel like sleeping on the floor would have been as comfortable as this mattress in this room. And for what I paid for this room I expected much more, much better. Checking in downstairs I was greeted by a beautiful spacious lobby, a fresh scent in the air, and the check in reception desk staff was friendly and super competent. I chose to park on site because it was freezing outside and I didn't want to have to walk too far as I'm traveling by myself. Parking below the hotel is available for a cost. Getting down under the building in a larger vehicle can be a little scary. But I managed to easily find parking and hopefully later today when I leave, I won't have any issues. I took the elevator from the parking lot up to the fourth floor where my room is and easily found my room. But when I open the door to my room, it smelled like dirty sheets. Like dirty hair that needs to be washed. It did not smell like the fresh scent of the lobby. The decor is very masculine and uncomfortable. The couch that I sat in started to unfold itself as I'm sitting in it is the best way I can describe it. It's like it can turn into another bed in the room, but it's so poorly made that while you're sitting on it the bottom cushions start to slide out like it's going to turn it into the bed. Very uncomfortable and hard. The actual king size bed looks like it's going to be super comfortable. It's got nice, fluffy sheets and pillows on it however, I cannot get comfortable in it as it is hard as a rock. My hips are killing me and my right arm keeps falling asleep. I cannot find a comfortable position. There is no alarm clock, so I have to check my phone to check the time. Good luck figuring out the light switches. I spilled some water and there are no paper towels, so I chose to use a washcloth to wipe it up. Thefloors are laminate so wiping it up should've been easy and I expected the washcloth to be virtually clean when I picked it up, however it was filthy. So when was the last time these floors were mopped? And then I started looking around that's an area rug and there are several dark stains on the area rug. I had to turn the heater on because the air conditioner was running and the room was freezing. I mean outside it was 33°. The heater was so loud. I called downstairs and they offered to send someone up, but I was already in my pajamas so hopefully after I check out, they will check it out because it sounded like a freight train was in the room every time it came on. The walls are pretty thin and I know this is a college town and there was a concert here tonight. I knew that I would hear sounds from the street, but it was the sounds from the hallway and the rooms around me that was super annoying. The iron never heated up enough and water spilled all over the clothes I was ironing. Had to use the hair dryer to remove the water. Some previous yelpers said the water pressure in the shower was light. I found it to be perfect. But the hotel provided shampoo, conditioner, and body wash all had a male-centered fragrance. Overall, I'm very disappointed in the stay. I have a pretty long day ahead of me with a lot of driving and I got basically no rest. And my back is stiff. read more

I am rating the bar only! Angela is the best bartender! We are Marriott members who live in Chapel Hill and come to the AC to see Angela! We followed her from another employer that fed me as healthcare worker during covid! Last Saturday night was crazy and I was totally shocked that she was the only bartender! UNC and DUKE just completed their game. The bar was packed! As more and more people filtered in! Angela continues to serve every customer as they were the only one there with her smile and infectious laugh. Glasses were piling up on the side, but Angela was there making sure every customer was happy and taken care of! Believe me they were surely. I don't understand how this is considered a nicer hotel than lower tier Marriott's? It cost more but parking is very difficult, there are no extra blankets offered, the AC sounds like a semi truck parked in my room and a paltry breakfast is $18 when it's free at other properties (Residence Inn, Spring Hill, etc). I'll check out the gym and shower, maybe some redeeming qualities there. Otherwise I feel like this is just a bougie name with mixed real experiences (some AC's are nice - but I'll avoid this one in the future). read more

Find deals on third party hotel sites Parking: A+ In the garage, where the elevator goes straight to your hotel floor. $20 a day (so be mindful of that!). Breakfast: C+ The only down side is I would want more on the breakfast bar for $16. Decor: A+ in the room & lobby is great! Bed comfortable. I stayed here on a Wednesday night while I was in town traveling for work. Friendly staff, clean room, comfortable bed, and the room had all of the amenities I needed. Keep in mind this hotel is located pretty much directly on a college campus, so noise is to be expected. I didn't experience any trouble during my stay in terms of noise. There is a garage below the hotel and parking was complimentary. I did utilize the gym in the hotel and was pleased when using the treadmill and elliptical as they seemed state-of-the-art. Very poor service. I was here four nights. My room was not cleaned once. Even after I called the front desk after the first time they missed my room, nothing happened. I tried talking to the cleaning people then, and all they could say was , " No speak English". Probably only clean the rooms that are vacated, is my guess. Not a cheap place either. A Marriott in the heart of downtown chapel hill. The room was OK. At least the A/C worked. And the bar/restaurant had decent food. Parking garage is very tight. Not easy to negotiate. This was my first time in a Marriott AC Hotel and I had no idea what to expect. It turns out that this one at least was designed like an unpretentious W Hotel. Styled in a contemporary fashion, conservatively furnished but all with sleek modern touches. The hotel had an aura of newness about it, which I really liked. The front desk confirmed how new it was, opening last December. It was fresh, clean, and in a style that I loved. Checkin was smooth and easy and as an elite member I was granted my late checkout request for 3 PM--which perhaps is a benefit of the Marriott-Starwood merger. A variety of maps for UNC campus and the city were available. I was given a $10 voucher for food or beverage as a welcome amenity. The room was simply furnished, with dark brown wood and black steel and silvery chrome as accents. No closet, but there was an open air rack to hang your clothes as well as a couple of drawers. The "closet" was integrated with a cool glass-door mini fridge that had two free bottles of water and chilled glasses inside. The room was spacious. There were plenty of well-placed outlets and USB charging ports available. (By the way, as someone who knows something about cyber security, NEVER plug into a hotel USB. You never know....) Bed was king sized and comfortable with about four pillows to support my head if I wanted. The bathroom was sleek. No tub, but instead a larger shower enclosed by glass. You have your choice of rain shower or wand action. There were only a couple of bugs during my otherwise very pleasant stay. First, the front desk didn't inform me of the $10/night charge, which would have made me consider looking for free street parking instead. Second, housekeeping. Having been a housekeeper myself during my college years, and respecting the hard work it is, I hate to complain. But I asked the keeper in the hallway to please clean the room. She agreed. When I came back 2 hours later, the tip was taken but the room not done. I left for another hour, and still nothing had been done. Finally I asked the front desk and one more hour later (by now it was 4 PM), it was finally done. I hope the housekeeper whom I told earlier and who almost certainly pocketed the tip did the cleaning. Also substandard: two shower gels and one conditioner in the shower. Shampoo please? The lounge area was cool, though service at the bar was only for a few hours and closed relatively early, at 8. I didn't mind because I get it: it's the summer doldrums in this college town and there's no need to keep it open if traffic is lax. There was another cool detail though. Every table in the lobby had a little pushbutton system where you can call for a server or ask for the check. Service was polite and fast. One night I had a glass of wine, which was on tap (guaranteeing freshness). The next night I asked for a gin and tonic and it was unique, with garnishes that not only included lime but a slice of star anise that really complemented the Hendricks gin. Breakfast is continental, and for a small buffet of coldcuts, yogurt, bread, and fruit was quite pricey at $15. Yes, you have the option of a couple of hot egg dishes that are included in that fee but I passed. Coffee, however, is free. Bottom Line: I generally enjoyed my stay here and will return. I'm certain that the little mistakes that were made were a result of the hotel's newness. It will easily gain another star for that. I'll also try other AC Hotels around the world if I get the option. The style is very much "me." read more

Honestly, one of the worst stays I have ever had at a hotel. I hate to say it because I really like this Marriott brand, but I did not enjoy my time at the AC hotel in Chapel Hill Downtown. Everything is under the mantra of "Due to Covid", and some things are excusable, but I don't think being rude, grumpy, disrespectful, and not doing their job qualify. At check-in, the lady at the front desk was extremely rude; she never made eye contact, never even greeted us or smiled. Additionally, she did not give us the option for points or a $10 credit per day - we had to go to the front desk after check-in to ask for it. We decided to go with the $10 credit, but we soon found out that it didn't have much use at all since the restaurant was closed. This was not advertised on the website for the hotel and I was very disappointed. There was a marketplace within the hotel, but it was not well-stocked so we decided to just waste the $20 on junk food and snacks. When we went to checkout the items, there was a different person at the front desk. While she was scanning the items, she was practically throwing the items back at us onto the counter and was clearly upset and grumpy at something -- once again, no eye contact. Speaking of being grumpy, our party was a bit hungry late at night and we decided to head down to the hotel bar to enjoy some small plates. We weren't entirely sure when the bar would close, so we called down from our room to ask only for us to be rudely told "Um, we know you're underage" in an extremely sassy, disrespectful, and chastising voice before rudely hanging up while I was trying to explain we weren't going to drink - understandably they were only following the law, but they assumed the worst of me and hanging up mid-sentence and saying it in such a way was incredibly uncalled for. Later, when we got back to our hotel room, we realized that there was no body soap, towels, trashcan bags, and tissue paper placed in our rooms. We called the front desk for them to be brought up and we were told to go down and get them ourselves. This would have been understandable if we only needed extra amenities, but there were NO amenities in the room to begin with. Didn't we pay for a room that should be prepared and equipped with the basic needs at check-in? If we are going to get such bad service, or no service to be exact, I think we should send an invoice to the hotel, or at least have cheaper prices, since we basically had to do the staff's job for them. This is not a hotel; it's more of a motel the way we were treated and not provided with any services. On another note, the hotel room's air conditioner fan was making a weird tapping noise - almost as if a piece of plastic was stuck to it. We called the front desk about that too and were told that they would send a person over to investigate. When they did, they said that it indeed was an issue and that they would call our room back within a few minutes, but they never did. On a final tangent, the hotel had a paper within our room describing the changes made due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of them being a grab-n-go breakfast from 7:00 A.M. - 10:00 A.M. - however, as is almost expected at this point, there was no such breakfast option and we were instead directed to the snack marketplace. This last bit will sound elitist, but I have Platinum status with Marriott hotels and am guaranteed a 4 P.M. late checkout, with resort and convention hotels being an exception. To my knowledge this hotel is neither of those and, unsurprisingly, that guarantee was not honored. I hate to be so brazen, but if I am willing to pay over $100 a night, I expect courteous staff and basic amenities stocked within our room at the very least. Marriott has been letting me down lately, and I can't say I can recommend staying here at the AC Hotel in Chapel Hill Downtown. read more

RUDE reservationist hung up on me. I got conflicting emails info about a reservation. I sought to clarify. I eventually penetrated the HORRIBLE voice response system and waited 10 minutes for "live" help. Unfortunately, the reservation person didn't like that I sought to understand why I got an email that she said that I could not have received. So she hung up. (Note, before you assume anything, I was being EXTREMELY polite in spite of her terse and unfriendly tone.) Additionally, online system was poor. The whole bad experience was created by us getting an online message that they couldn't complete the reservation, but then ended up with multiple ones. read more

This is the first time I have stayed at anAC brand hotel and if the rest are like this one it will not be my last time. Hotel staff was welcoming and check in was a breeze. The hotel has a very contemporary feel and the layout is good. The room is nice with a nice bathroom. Large shower with an option of a Rain shower head or hand wand. There is no closet, just a small area to hang clothes with two small drawers under the small refig. Really have to live out of the suitcase, not a big deal for me. This AC was well kept, clean, and mostly quiet (we had a street side room) but the noise did not interfere with sleeping. Coffee bar available for that early or even late cup of coffee. Hotel is in a great location with walking distance to UNC and the shops and restaurants of Franklin Street. Hotel overall is a great value and will be staying here again the next time I get to come to Chapel Hill. read more

Pleased with my stay at this property. As another reviewer noted, AC Hotels are in the vein of W Hotels, but not quite as posh. Everything is minimal and modern, but the overall effect is comfortable and guest-centric. Who has a problem with that? Not this girl. The rooms have hardwood floors, lots of glass and metal in the bathroom, and only a couple of small drawers. This is a good place to live out of your suitcase for a night or two, but there's really no storage for a more lengthy stay. Room has a coffeemaker, mini fridge, and hair dryer. The only thing that I wished for was a magnifying makeup mirror. Beds are comfy and have above average linens for a property at this price point. Toiletries are above average, too, given the relative value of the hotel. Air conditioning in the room worked well! This property has a lobby lounge, as well as outdoor patio seating that I enjoyed on a balmy evening. They don't have a full menu restaurant, but they offer breakfast service and a few tapas options later in the day. Location is good, we walked to dinner and had many options. Parking in their garage will run you $10. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. I noticed a guest laundry room on my floor. read more

DO NOT stay here if you want a good night sleep and to feel well rested the next morning. It's sandwiched between two college bars so the loud drunk students and street traffic kept me up well past midnight. The hotel's walls/windows must be paper thin since I was on the top (4th) floor. I had previously never stayed at an AC Hotel by Marriott, but I won't be staying at an AC again after this experience. On top of the noise, our room smelled and we couldn't get the A/C working (didn't bother asking). AC hotels may be "trendy" but they're pretty minimalistic in the interior design and amenities (example: no lotion in the bathroom). It reminded me more of a studio apartment with mediocre furnishings than a typical hotel room. read more

This hotel had lovely rooms with a modern feel and was very clean, however, the customer service is abysmal. I was staying here for an interview at the University and I requested a wake-up call that I never received, resulting in my late arrival to my interview. They also charged me for room service/restaurant service I never used, and I had to call them three times to complain before they reversed the charge. read more

The hotel is decent but we had 3 problems: (1) There was cigarette smoke in room 333. I notified someone of this situation and they said they would take care of it; they didn't. (2) The tv picture constantly froze. I was told all the tvs constantly froze and they had to do a reset of their directv. The reset didn't work. (3) One day, I came back to my room at 5:00 and the beds were not made. I called the front desk and they said the cleaning people were still making their rounds. I had to contact a maid on a different floor to make our beds. This problem happened twice. I will probably not stay at this hotel again. read more

We got in a little late night after bars and Ben the concierge at the desk was absolutely incredible. He managed to find us some ice as the machines were out and my fiancée had sprained her ankle earlier and desperately needed it. Ben quickly figured it out and all was well. The rooms are terrific but the service is even more top notch and hard to find elsewhere in the triangle, especially this kind of late night service that was taken care of rather quickly and wouldn't be expected at other locals. All in all, we had a great check-in and then Ben really showed us how the service and atmosphere shines here at the new AC. read more

We've stayed in AC-branded hotels in Europe and quite enjoyed the experience (modern, with thoughtful touches)...so we looked forward to staying here over the weekend visiting our son. Don't recommend, especially given the price. Pros: - Aesthetically pleasing lobby and dining area with lots of light - Well-appointed fitness center with plenty of fresh water - Very close to Franklin St commercial strip and UNC campus Cons: - Rooms are over-designed and under-functional...the bathroom sliding door kept coming off the rails, potentially trapping you inside...light switches are a mystery (what switch controls what light) - It will be noisy: you have no choice, it's surrounded by bars with outdoor patios and games, that stay open til 2am - There's a very casual approach to service: lobby restrooms were consistently filthy; housekeeper left dirty latex glove on floor of our room - As others have mentioned, the housekeeping schedule is erratic: day one they didn't clean the room til 5pm, which inconvenienced our day; day two the housekeeper loudly banged on our door at 9am and seemed put out that we hadn't left yet (they could have checked the system to see if we had checked out? But didn't...) - Breakfast was awful: tepid coffee, decaying fruit, undercooked and greasy egg concoctions; in theory you can order something from the kitchen, but one of the days we couldn't find anyone at 10am to actually put in the request -We spoke to the manager about our concerns when checking out (a first for me at a Marriott chain in ten years), who seemed nonchalant and promised points in compensation, which she never posted... Conclusion: only book this hotel if you have run out of other choices or are willing to trade poor hygiene/service/dining in exchange for excellent proximity to the UNC campus. read more

After reading reviews I was surprised to discover there is absolutely nothing unique or special about this hotel other than the exorbitant cost. I'm writing this review from my room at 12:30am on a Friday night and the noise outside is a good reminder of how close the hotel is to the campus. The room is quite clean and the staff are friendly and professional, but the hotel is nearly new. Those are the only pluses I can think of and they do not justify $250 per night rates when there are other clean and quiet hotels for half the cost down the road. The wifi is problematic and we finally gave up. The front desk person on staff said it took him 20 minutes to get connected tonight and that, on some nights, he can't connect at all. I'm perplexed by this. Why hasn't it been fixed. The parking garage has only about 20 spaces and all were full. There are about 6-8 reserved spaces for people with platinum status and all were empty. Fortunately, I was give permission to park in one. Breakfast at the nearly new Hyatt a half mile away is free and wonderful, and the rooms are less than half the cost. Breakfast here is $15 on top of the ridiculous room rates!! There is nothing about this place that justifies the high room rates. It's going to be a long and noisy night and I've already paid in advance for another night. I will not make this mistake again. Unless you absolutely must be right near campus I strongly advice crossing this place off of your list. Take the hundreds of dollars you'll save by staying slightly farther away and use it for something else. read more

Our family stays at lots of Marriotts over the last 10 years, and though this one wasn't the best, it's definitely above average. The rooms are clean and modern, and the staff is friendly, and the lobby is gorgeous, and most importantly for us, it's super close to UNC. It would be better if they had suites or bigger rooms available (we stayed in the big king rooms on a high floor) and if there was room service and if you could order breakfast the night before to have it delivered to your room and if the food was a higher quality. Fortunately, there is a plethora of excellent restaurants within walking distance of the rooms, so that makes up for a lot. The fact that this is largely the newest and most contemporary hotel available in Chapel Hill makes it our hotel of choice when we visit. read more

So my first night here they placed me in a room with a broken tv and made me pack up all my stuff and moved me to a different room at 12 am at night ! Terrible start. The saving grace here is the service of the staff and the contemporary chic look and feel of the AC. Think of the W (SPG) but on a smaller scale. We stayed in one of the new AC Hotel chain that Marriott started relatively recently. It's supposed to be modeled after "European" hotels, with relatively spare rooms but excellent amenities. The rooms look nice, the wifi is good, and there are plenty of USB ports. The problem is that they don't seem to have planned the hotel construction properly. When you don't have a lot of carpet and the rooms have more empty space, you need to provide sound baffling. Since the hotel is in the middle of a college town, there is a lot of outside noise, which just echoes if the rooms aren't properly soundproofed. We finally got to sleep around 2 am. I paid with a voucher I had received (not the same as points). The hotel comped us the $10 parking fee, but made no other attempt to make it right. read more

If I could give 3.5 stars that would be more accurate but it was definitely not 3 stars so I'll go with the rounding up. =) Cleanliness: Very very clean. It's new of course but every corner of the place and the outside grounds was immaculate. Bravo. Aesthetics: It's very SQUARE. I mean, even the toilet is square. =) I get what they are going for but it was too much. My husband and I had a good time pointing out everything that was square. There is nothing wrong with the modern look, but it was just not very balanced. Comfort: Bed was comfy. I thought the pillows were too soft but that's my fault for not bringing my own. Comforter and sheets were very soft. The AC unit worked great. Shower had two options and I enjoyed the RAIN. . .nice shampoo and shower gel as well. Room was long but roomy. A+ on use of space for sure. Price: I used a certificate from Marriott that I earned as a member but the price that it would have been is on point for locale and for what it is. If you are visiting the UNC campus this is the perfect place to stay. Lots of great places to go to within walking distance. Stay away from the bar right across the street though. Noise level: We could clearly hear the traffic from the road on a Friday night but thankfully, around 9pm it was quieter. If there is a lot going on in the city, not sure if you would get a quiet night's sleep. We could hear people getting ice across the hall easily and doors slamming. I think they could use some more noise dampening. There is no carpet - it's laminate that looks like wood? - so I think that adds to the noise pollution. Customer service: This is where the place wavered and may need a bit more training. When we checked in the two check in ladies were excellent. They made us feel very welcome and they seemed genuinely glad to have us. I got a higher floor as requested. There are only 4 and I was placed on 3. There were small bottled waters in the cool tiny fridge but I don't know if that is standard or because I am an Elite member. When I called to ask for another decaf coffee pkg and some creamer it took quite a while to get it delivered to the room. Check out is at noon and even though we had the do not disturb sign up housekeeping was knocking intensely at our door at 10:30 AM. I did not like that very much. Around 11:30AM when I inquired if we could leave our car parked in their parking area while we walked to lunch and back, one of the front desk ladies seemed annoyed and haughtily informed me that it would be FINE but I need to understand that they will need the parking spot by 3pm. She was really off putting. It's the way she said it and not what she said. The limit was reasonable but I thought she was rude about it. We ended up checking out at 11:30 because I felt like they needed us out of there. We also found out there was a $10 charge for parking at checkout. She said that the check in people should have informed us but they had not. So just a few kinks to work out there. Ashley was great though at the front desk. Very friendly and informative. Her coworker needs help, however. Overall, I think it's a fine place to stay, just be sure to ask about parking before you check in. We did not dine there nor drink there although we were told they have good cocktails. We had the coffee that was in the room and it was okay. There is no microwave - FYI. There is a teeny fridge (cube/square! LOL) with 2 chilled glasses. There is a tiny coffee pot but there was so little room above the fridge that I moved it to the office table which worked out fine. There is no "CLOSET" per se - it's a tiny opening with some hangers. If you have more than one suit or a couple of outfits you are out of luck. No drawers for anything - you may have to operate out of the suitcase. The tv was a nice size but it was positioned so that the best view was from the bed and that was not always comfortable. We wished it was on an arm so we could position it to see from the couch. I did love that you could sign into your own Netflix, Hulu or Youtube account. The square sink is too shallow to be very useful. The "view" from our room was the street and the building across the street. No big deal - it is downtown after all. But there was nothing unsightly to stare at. There is a small Target, Walgreens, CVS and much more within walking distance. A good option for a hotel if you are in the area. read more

I have stayed at many a hotel over the years. This has to be one of the worst experiences I can recall. The first room I checked into was dirty and definitely had not been cleaned. They moved us to another room, which was only a minor upgrade (all the finishes were scratched, stained or in some other way ruined). That was only the beginning of our nightmare. There is a college bar next door, which blasts obnoxious music well past midnight. Not to mention, the walls are paper thin, and the room just about shakes with the music. There is nothing positive to say about this hotel, stay anywhere else in the area, do yourself a favor. read more

Hotel is modern and comfortable. Staff is friendly. However...the food leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered in for my family as we had a long week of travel and the food was not good. Cold, bland, not good. I recommend eating at one of the many restaurants a few blocks away. read more

Worst hotel. Doesnt keep a reservation so literally dont bother. Customer service here could careless. There is no sound proofing. There is basically no reason to ever stay at this hotel. Went to the bar after the Tarheels Duke game and had a blast! Caroline and Kenneth were awesome bartenders they were getting their asses kicked and had to deal with SEVERAL rude muthafuckas- kept their cool and kept the drinks coming oh and the most glasses of water and side glasses of ice I've ever seen ordered at a bar with their drinks (not used to seeing THAT in ND!! We stayed here for One night during My daughters UNC freshman Orientation. I wish I could give it 5 Stars but, they gave us a room on the ground level (which there's nothing wrong with) but someone decided to workout at 4am and kept dropping his weights and the Hotel's gym doesn't have any mats or anything covering the floor, (they have hardwood floor) so it made a loud noise and that's what woke us up. Other than that it was a great stay and their Staff was very friendly. The hotel was also near the college and was located on Franklin Street which was such a convenience! I will be staying here again when I'm visiting my daughter, I'll just ask for a room not on the ground floor. read more

I was visiting Chapel Hill for homecoming and stayed here...Super friendly and helpful staff. I fell asleep in the lobby and they let me sleep there until 6:30. I awoke to a gentle shake and a, "hey boss, you have to get up, my co-workers are coming", then they made me another another key for my room. 5 stars. read more
