My daughter and I recently stayed here for 2 nights and couldn't stop saying "this hotel is just so cute!" Cute in a southern charm type of way. Cute in a has a jar of (delicious) cookies at the check in desk at all times. Besides being so cute it's located perfectly right in UNCs campus and just blocks from Franklin street. We had a car since we were making our way thru North Carolina and needed to drive to Duke a few times, but if you're visiting UNC you could probably get away without a car. The room itself was cute (of course) and clean. My only dislikes was that the tv didn't have Netflix so my daughter and I couldn't watch a movie together, but my phone sufficed. The walls were also a little thin and we had some noisy neighbors. We enjoyed the brunch buffet before checking out on Sunday and it was delicious. We had a great stay at the Carolina Inn. I used to work at the CI when I was in college as a banquet server so it was nice to return as a guest and see it from a different lens. The hotel is now a Hyatt property and the renovations added modern touches to the sleeping rooms and lobby and restaurant. We parked overnight and the valet and front desk and all the staff are extremely friendly and hospitable. The standard rooms come with showers so I paid an upgrade for a bathtub. The rooms come equipped with a mini fridge, robes, a lovely Nespresso machine, and very comfortable bed. We had a delicious dinner at Crossroads and also a fantastic brunch buffet on Sunday morning. The hotel is known as a wedding venue so it is a great place to host rehearsal dinners and weddings and have the guests stay overnight. It is the university hotel and has the Carolina charm and history and is a great place to stay for alumni, weddings, or other local events. I enjoy it here. Note: Avoid room #237 (queen). A water/sump pump(?) is located in the wall next to the bed. It runs a few minutes, more often than every hour, day AND NIGHT. I tried to ignore it, but it is too loud. Plus, It discharges water into the bathroom sink drain. Again, this is loud (like flushing). Strange! Certainly a known problem and certainly not considerate of guest sleep. I was allowed to change rooms... but no apology. This hotel has a significant history and plenty of Old Money class, it is a wonderfully elegant hotel and apparently now participates in World of Hyatt. The Carolina Inn is a hotel listed on the National Register of Historic Places on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it is centrally located to many restaurants and pubs, as well as the planetarium. Expect immediate help upon pulling into the driveway, the valets are immediately responsive and very willing to help you get settled into the lobby quickly. I have not experienced a more efficient check-in process for quite a while, the concierge is directly across from the front desk and a great resource. Unfortunately, the restaurant was completely booked so we made reservations for a spectacular restaurant within walking distance, I found this to be a better option after comparing the dinner menus. When it comes to afternoon tea or drinks, the hotel restaurant is a great option and offers very comfortable outdoor seating. Being in a pandemic many hotels are scaling back services, resulting in lesser cleaning standards, not at the Carolina Inn. I was very impressed with the level of cleanliness throughout the hotel, even the common areas were sheen and clean. Such a cute place and spread for afternoon Tea. I've always loved trying tea places when I travel and I've been wanting to try tea at the Carolina Inn for a while. Reservations book far in advance because it's such a little room and a short time window. I took my stepdaughter for the princess tea and she really liked it. It was great that they had kid-friendly options like PB & J. My husband was able to order from the bar menu which was nice. Everything was super cute. The scones were delicious and the tea pots were adorable. It was a little pricey, but I guess you're paying for the experience and atmosphere. read more

This hotel is a joke. Not even remotely a luxury hotel. Check in was a loud, crowded lobby;however the gentleman working the desk was polite and competent. The rooms are small with ridiculously tiny bathrooms. My son commented that it was a dorm room. We were expecting charm, but felt like we were in a Courtyard by Marriott at best. We asked for a bottle of water from the valet stand and were directed to a self fill water dispenser. We flew in from out of town and didn't travel with our refillable bottles. We had dinner in chapel hill and called for the shuttle to pick us up. We were told it would be there in a few minutes. After 20 minutes I called back and was told it was no longer running. Nothing even remotely resembling the high end hotel they claim to be. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

Booked the hotel for one night while I was visiting UNC. I loved the traditional/colonial and southern feel of the hotel. It recently became a Hyatt hotel, but it still has a small, cozy, local family-run vibe rather than another mass chain hotel. The front entrance and lobby are quite grand and had a traditional colonial vibe. My room was also very cozy and quaint, with lots of light blue (Carolina Blue to be exact) and wood decor. The bathroom was updated with marble tiles and new finishes. I also ordered breakfast for room service, and it was wonderful! It's convenient to the UNC campus, and I found it easy to walk to the buildings for my events. The staff were very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Overall, I had a great short stay at the Carolina Inn, and I look forward to my next stay in a few weeks! read more

What else is there to say about this historic and iconic hotel? It's small and quaint, and feels like you're stepping back into time. The restaurants were closed during our stay, but our little room was nicely updated and tastefully decorated. I was a little worried the accommodations would be from the 50s but the rooms and bathrooms were recently updated and very convenient and comfortable. The service reps were all very nice as well. My husband got a bow tie from the gift shop but the shop didn't put price tags on anything. The bow tie was $53! That would be my only complaint - the lack of price tags on the gift shop items. Entering The Carolina Inn is exactly what I pictured North Carolina to be during my visit here - charmed my socks off! The space is absolutely beautiful, all the staff is so polite, and walking through the halls and into the dining area with the marble tables and large seating chairs feels so elegant. Seriously, so charming especially all decorated in the holiday spirit! Not only that, but the food and cocktails were amazing, cooked perfectly and beautifully presented. The bread corn bites that you get for the table are sooo addicting - I almost got full from it! All the Plate portions are also very generous so there's enough to share around if you want. Foie gras mousse for appetizer doesn't seem like much, but when you add each element onto the toast, it's a punch of flavors and all the ingredients are so fresh. Jam and foie gras is such an amazing combination - can't go wrong ordering this for the table to share. The scallops were prepared with earthy tones which was different and delicious. The sauce and bed of rice underneath was perfect. We also got the gnocchi which was on the sweeter side but still yummy. Dessert we were stuffed but couldn't decide between the poached pear and chocolate cake so of course get both! Our favorite was the cake, very dense but if you love chocolate, this is perfect for you. I imagine this place is very popular for weddings and special occasions as it should be! A very elegant restaurant in a historic inn. Came close enough to lunch time so we stopped here. Haven't been in this place probably in 20 years and it is as nice as it had been. We had the southern grits and shrimps and pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. Sandwich was in the traditional mustard and vinegar Carolina style. Staff were courteous and friendly. What can I say? The ambiance blows you away when you enter. The historic, vintage yet charismatic look and feel makes you want to stop right in the lobby, sit down and breathe in all the history before checking in to your room. But instead you take a few deep breaths and take in what you can and proceed to the desk to check in. Oh but before you do, grab a cookie or two from the complimentary cookie jar strategically placed right next to the check in desk. Peeking from behind the desk are friendly eyes with matching smiles. Within a few minutes you are politely checked in. Cruise on down the long halls with plenty more to see of the rich history of good ole UNC (Chapel Hill) that is. . When you finally make it to room after the welcoming educational delays, there is more warmth and delightful ambiance in store. A soothing mural drapes around your bed and you need to get dressed and go out to the events that await but you have to lie down, relax and take it all in instead. Unfortunately by the time I got to the room and was awe struck by the view, I had no more I wanted to photograph for others to view. I recently spent a night at the Carolina Inn, which was something that I had always wanted to do since moving to Chapel Hill. It's a beautiful hotel that exudes Carolina history. Pictures of past UNC alums and luminaries adorn the walls of both the hallways and rooms. My room itself was very comfortable and well-appointed, although the bathroom was quite small. On-premises self or valet parking is available and both cost $18.00 per night. The lot itself is located close enough to the entrance to make the valet option unnecessary, unless you have a lot of luggage. There are good dining options available at the Inn itself, but Franklin Street, with all of its restaurants, is only a block north. The only downside to my stay was the greeting I received at the front desk when checking in, which was kind of cold and indifferent. Great place to spend a night -- highly recommended if you're ever planning a visit to Chapel Hill. read more

Went with my friend for their English 'high tea'. This consists of 3 'courses'- 1) finger sandwiches, 2) scones with clotted cream and jam, and 3) mini desserts. Disclaimer: I lived in England for 6 years and went to several high teas at restaurants so I know the drill so I wasn't expecting the same thing in the U.S. I knew there would be differences and I was ok with it. PROS: Loved the room. The room for high tea was the small room off the left side away from the bar. It lovely and well lit with large windows and gave a good indoor patio kind of feel. The server was pleasant, attentive, and was knowledgeable of the food/menu. Also, they provided a gluten free option which is always appreciated. CONS: The portions were tiny. I mean really tiny. Sure, the tiny desserts are more labor intensive with more ingredients, but the 2 cucumber 'sandwiches' (see pics) with cut off crusts used 1 piece of bread- is that a 50 cent item there??? Come on now. Which leads us to the price for this high tea. There definitely could have been more food on that 3 tiered serving plate. You are paying for not just the food, but the experience, venue, city, and University location. If you think all of that rolled into one is worth the price, then this is the place for you. For me, personally, it wasn't worth it. I won't return for high tea, but I would return to the restaurant and bar section and try that. read more

This was our first visit, since going to Chapel Hill for games, going on 10 years now, and we kept saying we need to go. So we bid for tickets and did not get them, so I told the wife we should just go anyway and get away from Home for a short trip. The Carolina Inn was very welcoming, clean and prepped for covid, The Room was immaculate and was just darn attractive. From Valet to Front Desk to the Greeter(?) at the door all had a warm Smile and welcoming in their voice. The beds were ultra comfortable, pillows a little mushy but I could work with them, Bathroom in 287 was very clean but the shower door leaked, nothing the mat didn't pick up. We had a snack, Dinner and Breakfast at the Restaurant in the Hotel called Crossroads, I Won't go a lot into that they have their own YELP, so will hit that up. All of the food prepared was amazing and service with Zubear from Morroco was just excellent. The outside TV's are Placed awkwardly as it is like Hallway in shape with the TV at the end (Mental Picture) so everyone stops and talks or walks in front of you unless your right in front of it. We did watch the Tar Heels win! GO HEELS! The room was quiet, and dark with some minor pillow placements, towel and a Kleenex in the peep hole. I Would recommend this place but keep in mind it is a college town and this is the Alum Place to stay a relive their college days, so they are loud drunk and youthful(LOL). I Would recommend this place and you can use points if you are a Hyatt Member and the points for here are considerably cheaper than the other chains in town. Close walking distance to Franklin Street and to see the Bell Tower. They have a little shop inside who has the friendliest woman who is going to school for engineering from South Florida, who is just beautiful and friendly. We got a couple of the Crossroad Coffee Mugs there. So all in all it was so successful, I believe we are returning for Thanksgiving and still keeping expectations reserved, cause you all know how it goes, great and then .....lol I Would recommend and if it does not work out...I Will let you know on the next review. read more

This is a very elegant hotel! You can tell it is an old hotel but has been cared for in immaculate condition! The rooms are a bit small but they are nicely furnished with a southern twist. Every time I have stayed here, I have never had an issue. Upon my usual hotel inspection, the sheets and towels are always clean. The bathroom is very nice, and I love the marble counter top. The rooms are very cosy and the walls aren't thin so you can sleep comfortably. The front desk is always professional and helpful. If I call asking for assistance they will immediately come and bring me what I need and are very nice. The location of this hotel is prime! There is a free art museum across the street and lots of great places to eat. Also the hotel has a great restaurant called Crossroads inside- it's southern food but very delicious. I highly recommend it if you stay here or even if you don't, come by to eat there. Their Sunday brunch is divine! Also, if you stay here you get a free cookie (like the double tree hotel) but this is the best cookie I have ever had. The customer service here is 5 star worthy! read more

Back in town for a wedding and was saddened to see how big corporate Hyatt stripped the Carolina Inn of her "Carolina" charm and greyed her out like all miserable new hotels. The holiday high tea at Carolina inn is just magical. The whole hotel was decorated and they had a fun 12 days of Christmas scavenger hunt my 4 year old loved. The tea was in a small room with about 6 tables. We were able to pick our choice of tea (hot cocoa for the kids) and then they brought out an array of savory sandwiches and sweet treats. Everything was so good and there was even boxes provided to take home extras. It is certainly a splurge but an amazing treat for special occasions. read more

**This is a review for an event not a stay overnight in a room** I attended an Afternoon Tea for a bridal shower in a smaller event space at the Carolina Inn a couple of Saturdays ago and it was a GREAT experience. I attended a bridal show here a few years ago so I already knew how beautiful the inn is so I was excited to attend a more private event there. There were about 25-30 guests at the shower so it was a very small and intimate shower. The room was the perfect size. It was not too small to where we felt cramped, but not too large that we didn't feel like we were all together (if that makes sense). I can't remember the name of the room, but it was near the restaurant/bar. When we arrived we were able to use valet, but the parking lot is not too far away from the entrance. We were greeted warmly and directed personally by staff to where the shower was being held. The set up was beautiful. Great southern charm! There were 2 large round tables with chairs set up all around and the place settings were so cute and appropriate for the event. We had a glass of water, pink lemonade, and a mimosa waiting for our arrival. Who doesn't want a mimosa just waiting for them?! Once the shower started, we were given the choice of 3 different types of teas. The food was very good! Some of the choices included: cucumber sandwiches, scones, pork (I'm assuming ham) biscuits, chicken salad cups, macaroons, and other small desserts. The location is very convenient to Franklin Street and all of the great places in Chapel Hill near UNC. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would recommend this venue for events! So when I first came here I totally thought this place was overrated-- but it is definitely one of my favorite places in the area and a chapel hill staple. I'm not sure if it's the holiday coziness in the winter or the southern charm but the food def meets expectations. Cocktails- 2nd best cocktails in chapel hill (after crunketlon). Varied wine and beer selection as well. Food-rotating menu with seasonal options. Make sure for lunch to get the warm honey with the cornbread muffins!! My favorite entree is probably the true story chicken sandwich. Crispy without being overly oily. Desert - the pumpkin mousse is fantastic!! While not the most amazing food in chapel hill the experience is great. Coming here for drinks and apps is my favorite. Especially after Friday's on the front porch! read more

OLD MONEY. That's is the first thing that came to mind when i walked in the lobby. It's a historic college campus hotel that speaks to you at every corner and every angle of its halls and hotel rooms. There are frames of what I take as historical figures that have visited or may have worked the campus. This is definitely one of those booshie joints, where southern classy is the name of the game. The old structure dictates that everything was restored to its original glory. So if you're trying to look for something modern, you probably won't find It here. It's like being in a hotel room in London, it's all about where you're at and not where you're sleeping tonight. The beds are comfy, the shower is really nice and spacious considering the size of the room. It's at least feng shui'd well. Everything in my stay was very pleasant, the only thing I can remember that was a bit to handle was the tiny closet and its hanger contraption. Other than that, everything was delightful and peachy. The work out room was very nice as well. Aside from all the cardio machines they had, there is a heavy bag in the middle of the room as well. That's a perfect cardio exercise if you're looking to switch it up a little. Plus the dumbbells and pulley machines are decent. Towels and lemon water from a classy dispenser is a nice touch. I enjoyed working out here. I love this hotel. From the curb appeal, to the wonderful lobby, all the way down to the wood floors. It just screams like you're in the presence of just pure southern class. The staff was very nice as well. read more

Our first stay since they finished their renovation and may I say they sure did it right! Do love that at off-season times you can get this historic beautiful hotel for a VERY charming price. Such was our luck on this recent Friday night. Parking: $14 for self-park. Valet is available, but the lot is literally right out front although a little tight to maneuver around. Greetings: very nice, both outside and inside. Check-in easy and friendly. Up the elevator to our second-floor room to be greeting by classical music playing softly, the lamp lit and a chocolate chip cooking waiting on one of the beds. Husband headed into the bathroom first and came out proclaiming it "delightful"...uh, I kid you not...even I was surprised to hear that word come out of his mouth about a bathroom! Found the bed to be super comfy with soft sheets. Free wi-fi came with the room (as per the sign) but we didn't utilize it...have to appreciate it though! There was also a fridge and safe, robe, and nice toiletries. We also enjoyed drinks later in the lounge, and breakfast the next morning. read more

Came for high tea to celebrate a friend's birthday- and really enjoyed the beautiful ambiance and cozy service. Food was particularly cute, due to proximity of Valentine's Day and all the heart designs (sweetheart tea). Will definitely plan to come back to try out princess tea- I can see my three year old getting so so excited with her little group of friends The tea selections are broad and there's something there for every palate- I tried the rose hibiscus tea with raspberry, which while delicious was a little sweeter than I usually go for. Planning on giving their black tea a try for next round- when you order, the tea comes in cute teapots that fill up about 3-4 glasses of tea, so would be a good idea to mix and match with a group of friends! The food includes delicious scones with clotted cream and preserves (my favorite part, very well done!), little tea sandwiches, macarons, merengues, and chocolate pudding. We had brunch here on a Sunday. It was a mediocre experience and disappointing. First they had a buffet with minimal offerings. For the price- I expect incredible food but I've honestly had a better breakfast at a Best Western. No joke, why did I come here for food I can make better at home? The spread was limited and there was no interesting menu to order from the kitchen. I was left feeling a little foolish. My four nights stay was right at the start of the return of students and this hotel is on campus so there were LOTS OF CROP TOPS out all the time. Oh, to be young! My room was very clean and comfortable, but what stood out the most to my friends, oddly, was the WELL OILED WOOD furniture. I swear they must pledge that stuff every day. For me, it was the sheets. Softest sheets I ever felt, and I've been in a lot of hotel rooms. They always have flavored water in the entry and homemade cookies in the afternoon, which is a nice touch. Unfortunately, we had a problem with having several GIANT MOTHS in our room. We're talking the size of my fist and I'm not exaggerating. We told the hotel and they kindly gave us breakfast, but still! For those driving, parking is $18/day. It's really the only option though since you're on campus. read more

I've recently gotten very into tea and decided I would like to try afternoon tea for the first time and found that the Carolina Inn was the perfect place for this experience! First I want to say the decor is amazing. It's all things southern and elegance, I love the big chandeliers and the fact that the tea pots and cups seemed very unique, I believe they had different styles on each table. I loved the cute little elephant tea pot they had for kids. All the food given from the warm scones to the little tea sandwiches was great. The scones were by far my favorite! I left pretty full after eating the scones, mini sandwiches and the dessert. The service was good and the server gave a good description on the process. I had the rose tea and it was very good!
