I came to the store looking for some back to school supplies for the kids. I was amazed, but happy that they had some great sales going on just as everyone is preparing to go back to school. For example, they had Nike products at buy one get the second one at half price. I consider that a great value on Nike as I almost never see current style at sale prices like that! I bought a stadium chair. I showed my school ID plus i was still wearing my staff t-shirt. The man at customer service refused to give me the teacher discount because my id said 24/25. My campus has not yet taken pictures to issue the new ID's. Either give teacher discounts or don't. They could have easily found my name on my schools staff page. My badge looked worn because I have to wear it every school day and teacher planning days. The store also had bikes and boxes blocking an 2 entire isles. read more

We came in looking to restock our fishing gear - namely the pumpkin chartreuse worms that we recently caught a bunch of fish on. We were down in the hill country fishing with family staying at an AirBnB with two stocked fishing ponds on the property and my nine year old granddaughter caught her first fish using my Zebco 33 purple fishing rod and reel! Then she caught 5 more fish! I just had to give her my "lucky" fishing pole. So I was here at Academy to buy myself a new replacement pole. I had a very disappointing experience at this location. While checking out, I witnessed what appeared to be racial profiling of a predominantly lightskin man dressed in all black. Too busy speaking into his microphone about this man's movements and all he was doing was looking for someone to help him find a pair of pants. He was being watched and treated with unnecessary suspicion, and it was deeply uncomfortable to witness. Even my child questioned "is that who they are looking for".. Disappointing. To make matters worse, the customer service we received was unacceptable. We spent $452, and the cashier didn't thank us, acknowledge our purchase, or even offer a basic level of courtesy. However, the very next customer--who didn't have a tag on their shirt--was met with patience and a "Sorry for the wait" while the staff looked up the price. The contrast in treatment was glaring. Spending nearly $500 at a store and being made to feel like a burden is not acceptable. I expected much better, both in terms of professionalism and human decency. Academy needs to do better. I shop here. I have a credit card here and will be back, but not to this location which is very convenient being not even 7 minutes away. read more

Once upon a time Academy was king of the hill. I think they started out in Austin decades ago and expanded to Houston than Dallas etc. At one time it was a sports wonderland and you could walk on a leave with stuff you didn't need! These days it has a little bit of most things surburbanites need. In my case, I was looking for a racketball racket so I can get back in the gym and exercise safely. We came to buy a hoodie got to the car it didn't fit so we went to change it. Got permission from the guy that checked us out. We put it on went back to the guy to get tag remove . His Asshole manager (ginger) came up to us with an attitude asking if we paid for that while we in the process of removing the tag . I rarely come to this place since Dick's is closer to me. I came here today and found dome baseball pants on the clearance rack for $29.98. The rack said everything additional 50% off, discount taken st register. I proceeded to the cashier which rang them up for $24.33. A few friends and I walked into Academy with the intention of buying some ammunition and checking out some basketballs. Upon entering the store we walked up to a basketball net that did not have any signs clearly displayed about not touching the next so when a friend of mine attempted to reach up and touch the next a manager named David came up to our group and yelled "this is not a playground you can leave." We immediately told the manager that we didn't know we could not touch the next because there were no signs but despite our response he aggressively continued to insist that we leave. I still have a love-hate relationship with Academy, but now that the Great Ammunition Shortage of 2010 is mostly over, I'm a little happier with them. The gun area of Academy is pretty impressive and the guys working behind the counter are usually knowledgeable and friendly. I rarely get treated like a helpless female and that goes a long way in my book. The ammo prices are pretty competitive - a Winchester .380 100-round box is $34.99 - and are only beaten by Walmart, but the extra couple of bucks are worth saving the ass whipping that is the Walmart experience. The ammo selection is a little lacking in lower end (i.e. cheaper) brands, but since my gun seems to prefer Winchester, I guess that's a moot point. Overall, I'm pretty happy with Academy's gun department. Especially now that they actually have .380 ammo again. Silly ammo hoarders. read more

My child was given a gift and I needed to just exchange for the exact same item (different size) but because I don't have a receipt I have to pay a $15 difference because the item was on sale in the past 90 days. I wasn't asking for cash or store credit just a different size. Then I asked to hold the one pair they had left so I can try to get the receipt and they said they aren't able to hold any items. read more

I have shopped at this store for decades, drove up from Grayson County and passed many other stores to go to this particular store in Plano on Hwy 75. Recently I went in to buy some shirts. I took four shirts in the dressing room and they were counted by manager as I went in. When I came out of dressing room, the manager was gone. I decided to return two of the shirts back to the reduced rack because they didnt fit, then I walked around the store with the other two shirts that fit. I suddenly noticed that same manager following me, treating me like a thief. When I went to check out, there he was staring at me whispering to another employee. He then went outside and I approached the employee who was at the front desk also watching me and I told him I didnt appreciate them staring at me because Im not a thief to which he said, "Im sorry maam". As I left the store, there he was, manager Eric staring at me as I walked to my car. What a huge disappointment. Academy, you need to train your employees, you lost a very loyal customer. read more

I've purchase two shotguns from this location and the staff have been just okay. They don't go overboard with their customer service when it comes to their firearms department (Cabela's really has that nailed), but it's adequate. I feel like since there are so many new buyers of firearms these days, Academy should step it up to really help people find the handgun they want. I didn't buy my handgun here, I bought it at Cabela's where they take the time to really find what's best for you. They seem to have at least one or two racks of men's sportswear on sale at any given time which is also nice also. This is where I buy all my Nike or Under Armour gear. read more

I bought a bike online which was only available at this location, not other locations. The bike supposed to be assembled for pick up. I received an automated email from shop saying that the order is ready to pick up. I drove 40 minutes one way to get the bike. I was sent a link to click to received it at curbside. I clicked on the link and waited 20 minutes for someone to show up. Th guy showed up and said the bike is not assembled. He wanted me to come another day for pick up. I explained that I do't live in neighborhood. I drove 40 minutes just to pick up this order which is supposed to be ready. I asked him if they can ship the bike after being assembled. He replied "NO". It was so frustrating to drive 40 minutes, and waiting at curbside for 20 minutes and getting order. I am like why did you send me the email saying the order is ready to pick up when you don't have it ready? On top of it, I kept calling the shop at most 24-25 minutes just to cancel the order. No one would pick up the phone. Worse management, no courtesy of ship the order, and poor communication. read more

I have a coupon for $10 bucks off for 50 bucks or more. When I asked if I can use coupon on line I was told no. I then got the comment from the Sales guys "its Football season, nobody is doing Wrestling now." With that I left. Used Dick's Wifi to contact Academy and spoke with them. THey stated they had Shoes in stock. Drove there and found the shoes i needed, Less than Dicks Tax Free Weekend and Academy took Dick's coupon. Saved even more money. I've been a fan of Academy Sports + Outdoors for a while. They seem to consistently have some of the best prices and and selection and usually a lot more options than their big name competitors in the area. I haven't had much loyalty to a specific location, simply shopping at whichever location I'm closest to at any time (West Plano, Frisco locations). However, this week I visited this location with a friend and was highly impressed with the customer service of several employees, but especially Phillip. My friend found an incredible deal on a clearance down sleeping bag and decided to purchase it. When Phillip discovered this was their last one, he found one at another store out of area and spent the next fifteen minutes on the phone getting it transferred to Plano for me to purchase. The store in question seemed to think it was against policy to transfer clearance products and Phillip was persistent in running the issue up the ladder and eventually worked it out, despite being given multiple opportunities to tell me, "Sorry, outta luck, I'm going back to my lunch break." In an era of rather self centered employees (not Academy specifically, across the board) Phillip's quest to help his customer out really stood out. I felt it was necessary to praise this location for having employees dedicated to their customers. Thank you very much, you've earned a customer for life. read more

Conveniently located as long as you are going south on 75. Parking lot is a little bit cramped at the entrance right in front of the store. The store itself is pretty much identical to the other Academy locations that I visit (McKinney, West Plano and Frisco), but this one seams a little bit run down comparatively. I went to Academy yesterday to buy some new running shoes. No one ever asked if I needed any help and I felt like there was no customer service at all. The shoe I ended up buying was Relentless 2 by NIKE. Worst decision ever. I went to run in them last night and they were terrible. I went back today to exchange them and there was a guy named Cory in the shoe department and he was very helpful! He was by my side the entire time I was trying to figure out what shoe to get instead. I told him what I was kind of looking for and what I felt I needed and he directed me to a couple of options. I ended up getting a pair of Aisics and they felt so good on my feet. I went and ran in them today and they were just as he said. Cory was very helpful and definitely knows what he is talking about when it comes to running and running shoes. read more

Good prices as compared to other similar retailers. Usually what you're there for is in stock. EXCEPT athletic shoes. Every single time I've gone here year after year for cleats or basketball shoes, the stock is ridiculously low. Come on Academy, stock up, I mean REALLY stock up when it's back to school or the start of each sport season. I've learned visiting to look at shoes, but ordering online is our best option.
