The food is consistently exceptional, but the duck and the pasta are absolutely must-orders. Every bite reminds us why we keep coming back. What truly sets Kingfisher apart, though, is the people. Rick and Jennifer always go above and beyond to make us feel like family. Their kindness, hospitality, and genuine care make every meal special, and they always make our son feel so welcome. Great food brings you in, but it's the incredible staff that keeps you coming back. We can't recommend Kingfisher highly enough.

The restaurant is very trendy and a perfect spot for a date or intimate dinner with a small party. For appetizer we ordered house-made baguette and French butter, duck liver pate, and kanpachi crudo. The baguette with the French butter was so fresh and tasty. It was hard to stop eating it. The pate was also delicious and the kanpachi crudo was one of my favorite dishes of the night. We also ordered the crispy chicken wings, house made egg noodles and smoked dry aged duck for entrees to share. The winds were very flavorful and the sauces that came with it were a great pairing. The noodles the smoked duck was a great size for sharing and came with lots of veggies and sides. The duck was perfectly cooked and delicious. The noodles were yummy but were outshined by the rest of the dishes. We ordered the pickled papaya and marinated cucumbers for sides. In hindsight we definitely had too much food and probably didn't need the sides but both were great compliments to the other dishes. For cocktails I ordered the nuoc mami but ended up preferring the water buffalo. Both were good but I did really enjoy the clarified pho reduction in the water buffalo. Service was friendly and attentive. They packaged up our menu nicely as we were celebrating birthdays. Overall I had a great first time at Kingfisher and would definitely recommend a try.

The croque monsieur is delightful and the greens that go with it next level someone in our group even bought the dressing to take home. Don't forget a dessert we tried. Worst brunch of my life!!…read more Where do I even begin? We were in Coronado looking for a brunch spot and this place came recommended. Since we had never tried a European-style café before, we thought we'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. Everything from the food to the ambiance and overall cleanliness left a lot to be desired. The paninis were unbelievably bland -- they really need some kind of sauce or spread because they had almost no flavor at all. On top of that, the prices were surprisingly high for what we received. The desserts were around $11 each, and they didn't even taste fresh. The bread pudding was so hard we could barely get our fork through it. The only redeeming thing about this place is the location. Otherwise, the tables and floors looked unclean, which made the whole experience even more off-putting. This restaurant really needs to revisit its menu and overall upkeep because, as it stands, it's not a place we'd return to.

For several years, my husband's company had their annual award banquet there. It would always start out before sunset so that we had great views. Each side of the room offers a view of downtown and beyond. Then they would have a very professional staff passing appetizers and serving cocktails, and then a fancy dinner. Another time, my husband surprised me with a show at Symphony Hall downstairs, that included drinks and desserts at the University Club upstairs. It was beautiful and indulgent. More recently, a friend had given us tickets to Sunset Sips, a monthly themed-tasting. It was Spanish-themed when we went. They had vendors set up with various Spanish wines and liquors. They even included a couple of small appetizers to set off the them. A little over a week ago, a friend invited me to a San Diego Magazine party. It was a bit less "all inclusive" as the first cocktail was included, but after that it was a cash bar. They had some passed appetizers and a cold appetizer buffet. It was beautiful as always, had a DJ and some cute games, as well as a raffle. We were able to take a few photos before sunset. I cannot comment on the University Club membership, or any of the regular dining, as I have always come for a special event in the private event room. I hope I get invited back there soon!

I researched online and their membership is way down because downtown San Diego is dead. There are way better options if you're looking for a lively place to conduct business and network. Also, if you are a person of color, you most likely work here, NOT a member. This is still clearly mostly a club for old, white, powerful men. As a diverse woman of color, I did not feel welcome. In fact, I was DISINVITED to join. In writing. Nice views but is it worth the $750 initiation fee and monthly dues of $260 and up? (It is not. Lol. I found much better alternatives at a much lower price point without a one-year contract commitment.)

I ordered the brussels sprouts and the paella, and both were outstanding. The brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly, crispy where they should be, with a sauce that I'm still thinking about. The paella? Let's just say I have zero regrets eating every last bite. Zero. But honestly, the food almost plays second fiddle to the owner, Julie. She was running the show (the front of the house) solo while I was there, managing the business and somehow still being the most attentive and present host I've encountered in a long time. She's warm, funny, completely down to earth, and had stories that made the whole meal feel like a dinner party rather than a restaurant visit. It's rare to meet a business owner so genuinely personable and connected to her guests. Tapas & Beers is a family-owned French and Spanish gem tucked into a historic downtown building, and it absolutely deserves your visit. If you're in San Diego and this is on your radar, stop hesitating and just go. You'll leave full, happy, and probably already planning your next trip back.

Ordering promptly at 5pm, our dinner arrived promptly and hot. We also ordered the cheese plate because Humboldt Fog was on the menu, a fast favorite. Steak Frites were cooked to perfect medium rare, and the Duroc Pork Chop literally melted in our mouths, with the red pepper really standing out on the dish. Even the market veggies were perfectly seasoned and duck fat truffle fries were loved by Dad. After a life changing event, this meal was like a welcome hug home for our family and it really set us up for a nice evening.
