Surprised that only 2 people have paused to give 5-star reviews. The last being nearly 10 years…read moreago. Since then, I would imagine 10's of 1000's of people have gone through these doors. I was instantly greeted with a smile and a welcome. A very attentive greeter was very willing to help with any information and questions. She let me know about the free literature and post cards too. Truthfully, I work in Gold Beach (6A-6P) and pass by this little visitor center twice a day. My curiosity got the best of me; I finally made a stop on a day off. Glad I did. No one has mentioned the ample parking and overflow parking. Also, a nice play area for the children. I like the short trail to the beach with clever matting as to not sink into the sand and/or bring sandy feet back to the car and/or visitor center.

We didn't find any on the beach but did bring home a few anyway. (If you find one on the beach you can bring in the tag and earn a ticket for a trip to Gold Beach.) The rules for the free ones were for each $25 you spend in a participating store you earned a free float as long as you brought a receipt to the visitors center. Also they have floats hidden in the local shops that you can get a ticket for if you find it. Turning the tickets in at the visitors center earns you a raffle ticket for $100. It was a great way to spend a rainy day and meet lots of fun shop owners!

I just found out that Port of Gold Beach rents cars! As of this writing, $25 per day with a 25…read morecents per mile charge. No unlimited mileage option. At this price, it's best if you are just traveling in and around Gold Beach, don't go out of town. Although the Port is only open Monday - Friday, you can pick up and return cars on weekends. I picked up my rental on Monday, December 2. The Port keeps two cars. One car was a 1999 model, the other a 2003 model. I was given the 2003 model. I drove it a few miles to a grocery store, went shopping and couldn't get the car started again. Alternator problems. The Port quickly sent someone out to get the car started, and I was switched to the 1999 model. Also, I discovered their "daily" rate isn't "per 24 hour period" like most rental companies do. They charge $25 PER DAY whether you have the car all day or just a part of the day. For example, if you pick up a car at 10:00 AM on Monday and return it by 10:00 AM on Wednesday, most rental car companies would consider that to be a "48 hour" (2 day) rental. Not so in this case. It's still a three day rental because you had the car Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. So, if you schedule a car with the Port, pick it up as early as possible on the first day and return on the last day as late as possible since you will pay for each day you have the car. I was going to rent Mon - Wed, but ended up returning the car Tuesday afternoon. As per their policy, I paid $50 ($25 X 2) for two days rental, plus 25 cents a mile. The Port does not charge any idiotic taxes and fees. Just rental plus 25 cents a mile. For what I got, I considered it worth it. Oh, their policy is no smoking and no pets. The purpose of this rental was to take my cat to the vet. I explained that the cat will remain in the carrier the entire time. They okay'd my rental based on that.

Our hosts, Coleen and her father Ernie, we're incredible, they are friendly, gracious and were very attentive. Coleen is an amazing cook and used fresh ingredients from her garden to make us a wonderful family style dinner, both her and Ernie genuinely wanted to know about us and our journey. Ernie sat with us on the covered deck with stunning views and told us amazing stories of growing up in the area. I can't stop thinking about the wonderful time we had there. We will be back.
